Beam Me Up, Florida Man! Florida Man Claims He Was ‘Teleported Into’ Stolen BMW Before Crash
A man who crashed a BMW convertible in Volusia County this week told deputies he didn’t steal the car—he was “teleported into” it, according to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office. The incident occurred Monday near the intersection of Old Dixie Highway and Plantation Oaks Boulevard. Authorities said 36-year-old Calvin Curtis Johnson crashed the vehicle after allegedly taking it from Bicentennial Park. According to deputies, the BMW had been left unlocked with the keys inside a cupholder while its owner walked his dog. Moments later, the car was reported stolen. Shortly after, the BMW crashed. Witnesses at the scene reportedly helped pull Johnson from the wrecked vehicle. When questioned by deputies, Johnson admitted to driving over 100 mph before the crash but claimed he didn’t steal the car—instead, he said he had been “teleported into” the driver’s seat.Video segment at the link. Nicknamed ROC after the giant mythical bird capable of carrying off elephants in its talons, the Stratolaunch Model 351 is a one-of-a-kind engineering marvel. Originally designed to carry air-launch-to-orbit (ALTO) rockets, it was subsequently repurposed to offer air launch hypersonic flight testing following the death of Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, who had also co-founded Scaled Composites, the maker of the ROC. Looking like two jets fused together, the Stratolaunch ROC is an impressive sight to behold. Each of its two fuselages is 238 ft (73 m) long and supported by 12 main landing gear wheels and two nose gear wheels, for a total of 28 wheels. The combined wingspan of these two fuselages adds up to 385 feet (117 m), making the ROC wider than a 300 ft (91 m) American football field. Interestingly, the pilot, copilot, and flight engineer are located in the right fuselage cockpit, while the flight data systems are in the left fuselage, which is completely unmanned. This massive aircraft is powered by six massive Pratt & Whitney PW4056 engines capable of providing 56,750 lbf (252.4 kN) of thrust per engine.Lots of numbers and stuff there that don't make much sense to me. I live in very rural TN. This year alone we have had approximately 10 folks that have moved in and immigrated here from the UK- they're working on their American citizenship. Mostly folks in their 40s or 50s.

I've personally suffered from unwanted teleportation on several occasions. I've been teleported into shrubs, stairwells, and strange beds with ugly women in them. Jail cells, gurneys, you name it, I've been teleported there.

Does the Bastrop area have coal deposits? Because if I were Elon, I would buy dozens of square miles of coal deposits, build a modern private coal-thermal plant to generate electricity for the server farms, and sell surplus power into the Texas grid. Believe it or not, I was a very good girl as I rarely dated. Waited for the right guy in college.
I had a gang of guys I hung out with before I met my guy. Concerts, camping, hiking, skiing.Some of theseapproved of him and some did not. Boys liked me and vice versa, and my girlfriends liked me because I brought boys with me everywhere in college. Sometimes one of my brothers, too.
Then my bf/future husband, who broke up with me (for no reason) every season for a year was lurking. Male college friends of ours would come over to my apt for a beer and girl advice. Two of them said, sheepishly, that they'd ask me out but I was HIS girl. During an off season. I wish now I had played games and to see if he got jealous, but I was too busy trying to graduate to think this way.
I had fun!!! (I hope this is written on my urn drawer thing someday and will request it). Not ready to go yet, however. Have a baby granddaughter I have to teach how to dance and others that are not born yet. The other two dance with me on the deck or whenever we want.

Interesting idea - I don’t know if there are any coal deposits there, but I know of a strip mine in Leon County near a town called Jewett which got shut down when coal went out of favor.
A couple years ago I drove through the area and one of huge bucket loaders was still sitting out there, rusting away. I guess it was too big to move it anywhere.

Diogenes, Dripping Springs is a very.nice area in Hays Co., TX. I remember when it was its own small town community. It has been overcome with growth from Austin. I live about an hour from there.

Glad you are ok! Decades ago I had a rather stupid job 30min north of where we lived. Had to drive up US-1 or the Dixie Hwy in FL. Took the job because we'd just signed on a house to build and I was laid off by a neonatologist (great job!). The mean director of the newborn NICU could only offer me a night job and I said no.Politics exist in all professions.
Anyway, it was raining and I went to pass a log truck. Right as I was passing him a little pick up popped out into the left lane in front of me that I could not see due to the truck. Locked the brakes of my car and fishtailed. My back window was about a foot from a pointy log when I got control and finished driving to work in shock.
The next day I was drying my long hair with my head bent over, and my shoulder spazzed out from stress. My husband had to finish drying and styling my hair. It did not look that great, but I realized how stressed I was and frozen at the wheel.
Guardian angels are real.

No huge meal. I'm making breakfast muffins and that is it. The grandkids 4 to 11 y/o don't care about eating a big meal on Christmas.
It's supposed to be in 50s on Christmas Day and hubby wants to grill burgers. We're all happy with that.

Odd choice. Doing serious computation where you can't cool the computers effectively. Vacuum doesn't conduct or convect; you can only radiate the heat away.

My thoughts, also. Plus the problem of updating or repairing the systems. Everything is harder to do and more expensive in space.
I recently read a detailed white paper extolling the advantages of server farms in space, written by a startup company trying to raise funding for putting server farms in space. They hand-waved away what seem to me to be several major problems with the idea.
One thing that jumped out at me is that they assumed that their server farms in space would have a ten year lifetime. No one is running ten year old servers, doing serious work.
The heat removal problem seem like a big deal, too.

Or mount them on the backside of the (massive) solar panels, so the same system that keeps the solar panels pointing at the sun keeps the radiators pointed away from the sun. In that case, only one surface of the radiator is doing anything useful, since the other surface is facing the backside of the solar panel, which is warm.

Remembered this afternoon why I don't like to take oxycodone - I am one of those unfortunate souls for whom oxy INCREASES the perception of pain, and I end up wanting it sooner than I should. It also makes it harder to come off of it.
So I have taken myself off of it, and will try to will myself off of it over the next couple of days - I was still in considerable pain and wasn't getting any better, which is unusual for me.
I have questions in to my doctor - wondering if the 130 pounds that I have lost since my last abdominal surgery in 2015 might have some bearing on that. I am sure that the fact that I am very petite (5'0"), and the surgeon's hands are rather massive doesn't help 😂😂😂

Is there something you can focus your mind on, as a distraction from pain? I have sometimes been successful with pain control by concentrating on / visualizing the solution to a particular problem or planning step-by-step a complicated chore.
(and I mean *real* pain, like when I had a fingernail removed and the local wore off)

If you want to see some fancy thermal engineering in space, read up on the James Webb telescope.
The Sun facing side has a temperature of about 230F. The cold side, where the actual instruments are maintains about -380F. Call that a 600F gradient across the thing. How they achieved that, well, read up.
The telescope side has to be that cold because it images in infrared.

Mr. TiFW and I have fond memories of a primitive rest stop in Bastrop, Texas. After visits to his parents' house in our pre-marriage days (A 7-hour drive from College Station), Bastrop was a convenient little stopping place for a couple of healthy college students to take a few minutes out and get busy. We always left their house later in the day, so it was usually dark by the time we made it to the rest stop (which was literally one picnic table underneath some mature trees).

Holy Hell! He still had his full range back then. I've seen youtubes from early 80s, just crazy doing that night after night. AS it always does, it caught up to him. His top end was already going when they opened for Metallica on Justice tour for all tour but still best in the game in 89. As many QRyche shirts as Metallica ones at those shows.

They cut a giant L-Shaped incision right in the middle of my torso and started playing around with my liver. They were planning on removing one of the lobes, but once they got in there, they realized that there were more tumors than showed up on the scans (A common occurrence), so they installed an HAI pump instead.
The area where the pump was placed doesn't hurt at all - the other side of my abdomen hurts like a son-of-a-bitch. Probably because they were manipulating the liver (a very large organ) in my itty-bitty abdominal cavity with their giant meat paws.
I've had 4 C-sections and got away with minimal painkillers. Same with 2 knee replacements.
This surgery was....different.

Earliest heater fans: one speed.
Second generation: two speeds; either double field winding in motor, or resistor on fan switch.
Third generation: resistor block in heater plenum, so cooled by airflow. 2, 3, or 4 speeds.
Third generation: solid-state speed controller, with its heat sink in air plenum. My 2008 Suburban has that.

Must have had some wind here last night. An old Studebaker door shell that was leaning against the wall of my shop got blown down last night. Also saw tracks of some large-hoofed animal in the snow out back of the shop. Maybe a moose. Too big to be deer tracks.

I was just reading. An astronaut, even in even the earth's shadow doing a spacewalk still needs active cooling. Even there, he'd overheat just from his own metabolic output. But the load is less than in direct sunlight.
It can get tricky -- the hands tend to get too cold, and they have heated gloves (and maybe some other heating systems). It's very inefficient -- heating one spot, while cooling the brunt, but that's the way it has to be given the constraints.

Yeah they had their vid queen of the reich on MTV and I thought shit this dude can sing, so shortly after they were playing at the Ritz in NYC, so we went. Yeah his voice started to get little off after some years, but from what heard he smoked, which isn't going to help. I worked with enough singers to see their range dwindle from not taking care of their voice and hammering it night after night, but shit happens. Us asshole guitarists are usually the sole survivors. Singer's voices go, drummers shoulders go, but unless we get arthritis usually we endure. Sometimes the bass players get back problems from wearing that damn thing so low then can pee over the top of it. lol

Here in southern Idaho, the reader boards on the interstate today had warnings for high winds on Wednesday.
When I was moving here, I hit high winds on the interstate. I had the accelerator floored and could barely keep going 55 in my pickup. Twenty miles from my home-to-be I saw semi trucks that had been blown off the road. I remember thinking, "My God, what have I done?"

Gastro doc suspected his esophagus was constricted (it was) and to "expand" it if so. Procedure went well, and hubby went back to nursing home... hungry! They gave him some pudding in Recovery Room.
Hopefully, he won't be choking on his food & drinks anymore!

As for me, I should be fine now that I have discontinued the oxy - like I mentioned earlier, I am one of those people for whom oxy increases the PERCEPTION of pain, and everything hurts whether it is getting better or not.
I am actually starting to feel less pain now, and it has only been about 8 hours since my last oxy pill. Muscle relaxants and Tramadol FTW!

I suppose basic anti-inflammatories like aspirin & ibuprofen are out, due to their blood-thinning properties, but maybe there's some other way to ease inflammation? (which seems a likely issue, from what you've described)

Well, the time between #1 and #2 was 5 years, and the time between #3 and #4 was 9 years. They were all planned, so I never had any labor - I think that helped a great deal. Plus, I usually recover very quickly from surgery - this is the first time I haven't bounced right back.
Yeah, other women really hated me back in my child-bearing years....🤣🤣🤣
