Wednesday Overnight Open Thread - December 17, 2025 [North Pole Rex]

20241118-tractor.jpg

Good evening Horde. The time has come for mid-week shenanigans of the post-cafe overnight variety.

Welcome to the Wednesday night ONT which means another edition of random overnight fun and games. Pull up a chair and sit a spell. Good will offerings of amusing puns are happily accepted. Pants are optional. Be nice to your fellow commenters and AoS contributors. Santa knows who is naughty and who is nice.

ONT Department of Military Long Form Reading Material

Apologies if this has already been posted somewhere on Ace of Spades, but posting to make sure you see. Mandatory reading (since this is a semi-serious military blog at times).

A Week In The Pentagon - Chaos, Complexity and Hope

Many pull quotes but this one is a good example:

And here's the truth no one outside the building understands: often Trump himself doesn't know the decision in advance - and that is by design.

In the old model, a policy chief like Colby - if he wasn't drowned out entirely by the bureaucratic circus - would brief the President only after the internal machinery had already decided which ideas were "viable." By the time anything reached the Oval Office, the cake was half-baked.

Colby doesn't play that game. He encourages his team to present the President with multiple strategic pathways that share one overarching objective: put America first. Not metaphorically-literally. Then Trump chooses.

And once the President selects a strategy, everything changes.

In previous administrations, the moment a plan left the Oval Office, think tanks, senators, lobbyists, foreign service officials, intel chiefs, and a whole menagerie of Beltway fauna would descend on the National Security Council to tug at the plan, dilute it, reshape it, or kill it entirely. Every actor demanded their piece, their clause, their carve-out, their exception. Strategy, once released into the wild, rarely survived the stampede.

That era is over.

Trump doesn't ignore these players - he's altered significant strategies to accommodate strong objections from Congress and foreign allies - but he no longer allows them to hijack the core plan. They may comment. They may object. They may warn. They may advise. But they are no longer permitted to quietly amputate or rewrite the strategic heart before it beats.

The wonks are in charge again - but not the conference-circuit wonks with PhDs, hotel per diems, and NATO summit panels funded by NGOs with agendas buried in their footnotes. Not the pseudo-experts who present PowerPoints about imaginary futures.

The wonks in charge now are the ones who can take the boundless complexity of geopolitics and distill it down to America's core interests - those who can see the world not as a chessboard or a cocktail party but as a dynamic system requiring clarity, courage, and constant recalibration.

And for the first time in decades, the Pentagon is beginning to operate according to that principle.

ONT Department of Lego Construction

Anyone build their own Lego piece sorter? I didn't know this, but there is an entire sub-genre on YouTube of people making videos about making Lego piece sorters. I will admit, as a general rule, I am endlessly fascinated seeing many different solutions attempting to solve the same problem. (But I am also easily amused, so there is that...)

***

ONT Department of Military History

Last Wednesday's ONT included the story of the Vietnam-era toilet bomb. But wait, there's more!

20220918-VFA25-toilet-Super-Hornet21.jpg

From The War Zone:

CWO3 Wayne Toth, a member of VFA-25, who shared his photos with us for this article, also gave us a little background on how the toilet-bomb was brought back to life:

"I am the Gunner in now VFA-25. We had a change of command and decided to replicate it. This time on a brand new BLOCK III Super Hornet.

One of my AO3s (AO3 Meagan Rickets) picked up a toilet from [the] marketplace, and I cut the steel, used Mk 76 lugs, made the tail assembly out of multiple dryer exhausts, and our Corrosion Control made the stickers."

The change of command ceremony occurred on September 16 at Naval Air Station Lemoore where the historic toilet recreation was so proudly displayed. During the ceremony, Commander Mark "IROC" Tedrow, a former Blue Angel, took over as skipper of VFA-25 from Commander Kristen Hansen. It was a perfect place for a fun callback to the proud history of the squadron.

Bonus answer to the question from last week: Why did the original toilet have an "E" on it?

The "E" seen on the toilet denotes the unit has been awarded the Battle Effectiveness Award.

REMINDER

Saturday's Hobby Thread requires Horde participation. On last Saturday's Hobby Thread, we honored the Christmas ornament. Many among the Horde sent photos of ornaments from their collections to the Hobby Thread email address. It seemed to go well, so we're doing it again this Saturday. That means if you missed it the first time or you have another ornament to submit, you get another chance.

Could be something sentimental, something you made as a child or an adult, something special given to you, something you picked up on your travels, something whimsical or fun, something particularly novel, something really old, something handmade, something intricate or fancy, something irreverent and cheeky, etc.

If there is a story behind your photo, send a brief description. I may edit or inappropriately embellish, so be warned.

20251211-20251211_184631.jpg

If you don't have an ornament, but have some other favorite festive Christmas decoration, send it in. Ornaments get priority but will feature other decorations if there is space.

THANK YOU!

24 Content perused, mostly consumed. Several classic re-run pieces tonight; Christmas is a good time for classics.

Lego sorting: When our boys were young, their Lego collection grew with every birthday and Christmas. They liked playing with them, but not so much cleaning them up. I remember once taking a snow shovel to their bedroom floor and dumping them in a large box. I did make an attempt to help them sort out and organize the collection, so you could find that three-dot red brick when you wanted it, but they ignored order, and I quickly gave it up. Somewhere in the catacombs is the whole pile of them.

29 I wish someone would walk into my house and start chopping vegetables. But we know he would be a serial killer before I could thank him.

I have had serial killers in my thoughts now and then, thanks to one in college. I can't read about them or watch TV about them because it would trigger the only nightmare I have had in my entire life.

My husband got to be part of it, lucky guy. He was traveling a lot and our first house did not have an alarm. A lot of elderly deaf neighbors who would not hear me if something happened to me and our boys.

In my dream satan got into bed with me (it was my husband after a trip to the loo). I started screaming at 0200 and he thought someone was in the room, too. Put his arm around me (satan in dream) and I fought him screaming.

He had to turn on the light to wake me, and his arm was shredded. Probably still has scars and I should look.

This was because subconsciously he saw me reading the paper about the bastard's execution, saw all the girl's photos he killed, and commented that I looked like some of them (our hair, long, parted in the middle). That's all it took for the Nightmare of My Life trigger screamfest.

72 Thought I would send you guys an update on all of the "Health Stuff" that has transpired over the last week:

I have a "pump fill'" scheduled first thing Friday morning, then we will be on our way out of town. Thankfully, this fill is just Heparin and saline to keep the pump flowing for the next 2 weeks; when we get back, I have another fill scheduled to start the new chemo medication which will hopefully do the trick and get the rest of these tumors knocked off.

The best Christmas present of all for me (well, us) is that if this pump thing works, there is a better than average chance that I could go 2-3 YEARS before we have to start worrying about this beast coming back! And who knows what advancements may be made in that time period?

It truly is a Christmas miracle, and we are so incredibly blessed to have access to such stellar medical care right in our own back yard. We are also blessed to have SO MANY people saying prayers on our behalf. We are truly grateful for each and every one of you.

We hope that everyone has the Merriest of Christmases/Happiest of Hanukahs/Festive of Festivuses/etc. with those they love.

88 Because this is the best place to discuss furries...today in the NY Post there is an article about a NY college approving a furrie club. Just when I hoped they were fading into a bad memory.

The photos of the weirdos are what you'd expect sans little furry costumes. All homely if not ugly of both sexes. Or obese and ugly. Or misfits and weirdos. Dirty hair. Wearing flannel pj's. You know they stink to high heaven.

I'd heard of all black student unions, but this is too far. I'd yank my kid out of there faster than he could sew his furry costume and keep him in the basement til he saw the light.

Oh, some are called Bronies, or men that dress up like My Little Ponies. Their subculture is to create their thing or fursona. Gag. And to "create" little cartoons.

At this college there are 17 retards who had a camp fire, where one guy looks like he wants to melt himself like a marshmallow he's so stoned. The ugly girl next to him looks like she wants to help melt him. I just don't know, y'all...

111 That Duran Duran video is very iconic. When MTV started it got very heavy rotation.
----
December of 1982, I stayed at my girlfriends parent's house for 2 days. They had this new channel MTV. The 2 most memorable videos I watched were the Duran Duran video and...Kiss, with "I Love it Loud".

The Duran Duran vid was mesmerizing because it was new and current. The Kiss video caught my eye because rock radio had tried to pretend that Kiss didn't exist. Yes, I mean that. Kiss was a HUGE band in the mid-70s, BUT rock radio shortly thereafter tried to ignore them, as if they weren't pure enough to get airplay like Styx, REO, Journey, etc.

When I saw that Kiss video, I smiled--Kiss still lived.

149 Messrs Smith et Wesson have just introduced their own version of the 30-round .22 magnum. I have the Kel-Tec, and just got the S&W for my sister (good trade wouldn't you say).

It is, of course, marginal for 'home defense,' but way better than .22. It shoots flat, has long range for a pistol, is easy to aim, has essentially no recoil. Jokesters call it the "Poor man's five-seven." When fully loaded, it has a big-pistol feel, which can be good. Since it's mid-sized, it's not ideal for concealed carry. For a holster, it's still lighter than any medium caliber pistol -- but if you want to use a laser sight on the rail, you might have a hard time finding a holster to fit.

I'd given my sister a 686 revolver years ago, a .357 loaded with .38, and although I think of it as an excellent piece, it was just too much gun for her and she wouldn't take it out to practice. I'm looking forward to her shooting hell out of the .22 mag.

This is all i got now....
Death Rides a Horse (1967)
If the movie felt more like a "Spaghetti Western" (gritty, stylized, and high-energy music), this is likely it.
The Plot: A young man (Bill) witnesses the brutal murder of his family (including his mother and sister) as a child.
The Journey: He grows up and sets out on a horse across the desert to hunt down the five men responsible.
The Detail: He teams up with an older gunfighter (played by Lee Van Cleef) who has his own score to settle with the same gang.

It's an AI result, so your mileage may vary.

220 NYT has a big article on Venezuelan Navy escorting cargo ships past 0the American blockade. The headline reads, 'Venezuelan Navy Escorts Vessels in Defiance of Trump’s Blockade Threat'.

Reading more closely one sees that the escorted ships were not on the sanction list. In other words, they were escorting unsanctioned ships. Ships that were permitted to pass.

But it will look good on Maduro's propaganda video.
