Take Back The Language!

Our language is amazingly dense and infinitely useful. We have a larger vocabulary than any other language, and enough tenses and special constructions to explain the most complex ideas, without being burdened with much in the way of gendered or confusing multi-word nouns.

English is a glory of the Western world, which of course is why it is a target for the Woke left. As Orwell famously said:

But if thought corrupts language, language can also corrupt thought.

So let's fight back.

Don't say "partner" when you can say "husband" or "wife." Don't say "parent" when you can say "father" or "mother." Don't say "child" when you can say "boy" or "girl," "son" or "daughter." Re-sex neutered language. Be salt and light.
-- Tim Bayly

Excellent points, and a fine place to start. And I would extend it to singular and plural! There is nothing wrong with using "he" to describe an unknown. Using "they" is astoundingly confusing. "They drove the car into the bridge abutment?" How many people were driving the car? What's wrong with the general "he," which can be corrected when the sex of the subject is known. But using "he" risks misgendering, and our woke masters can't have that!

They corrupt us with this diminution of our wonderful language, and it is a simple thing to push back.

And don't get me started on "Happy Holidays!" I am happily Jewish, and I see no need for a Christian country to bowdlerize a traditional and fine greeting to be more sensitive to me. It's Christmas for the vast majority of the country...there is nothing wrong and everything wonderful about saying "Merry Christmas!"

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Also, stop calling someone a "kid" when they are over 18 years old. Get back to calling people "young man" or "young woman/lady".

This is ridiculous especially in sports commentating, both college and pros. Ridiculous to hear people saying "that kid is amazing" when talking about someone 22-25 years old.

Equally ridiculous when leftists call 19-20 year-olds in the military "kids" (while at the same time saying that actual kids and tweens can make decisions about abortions and castrating themselves).

I would argue "transsexual" is also made up. As no one can be "across" or "beyond" sexes.

All these people who claim to be "transgender" are simply transvestites. They are dressing up like the opposite sex.

Granted, some of them are going beyond that by getting castrated and deforming their bodies. In that case, I think we say that those people have mental disorders.

So mentally disordered transvestites.

The word transvestite originates from German Transvestit, coined in 1910 by German sexologist Magnus Hirschfeld in his book Die Transvestiten (The Transvestites). It entered English around 1922.

Etymological Breakdown
It derives from Latin roots: trans- meaning "across" or "beyond" + vestire meaning "to dress" or "to clothe" (from Proto-Indo-European wes- "to clothe," related to English words like vest and wear).

Literally, it means "cross-dresser."

Language and thought influence each other, and the better tools you have to work with means finer work, both in machining and in language, but the idea that by removing sections of language to prevent bad-think is as wise and effective a plan as curing psychiatric problems via lobotomies.

Another thing: the clear prolonged video of the one animal shows a rifle I don't recognize, appears to be some kind of bolt action (with a red dot). He cycles it each time he shoots, though the movement of the action looks weird to me.

128 Non-political distortion/degradation of language, but the most striking example I can think of.

Use of "way" instead of "far" or "much".

Most of my life, "way" was how a 12-yr old would modify something. "Hey, wow, that homerun was way longer than the one that Smith hit yesterday". "Dad, gas is way more expensive here than that last place we stopped".

Adult versions would be "much longer" and "much more expensive". Still jarring every time I see it - which is dozens of times a day.

Today it's become universal. Seems like overnight. With digitization one could probably compare this childish use of "way" with its use 10, 20, 30 years ago. Positive it would show a curve resembling that of college tuition or health "insurance" costs.

——-

I think it’s more profound than that. If the goal by some is to demoralize and pervert human behavior (nod your head “yes” then it follows words must first be perverted. Orwell thought the idea generally was to prevent people from even thinking “bad” (good) thoughts, because the words to describe such concepts no longer even existed. You can see these wordsmiths at work every single day if you know what to look for, it is insidious.

A bunch of queers running around wearing dresses, bull dyke police chiefs, mayorettes, screeching from the pulpit, et al, lunatics in high government circles is not …. a prescription for confidence going forward. Always and ever an indication of a society in a death spiral.

Meanwhile, let's not forget the grandaddy of them all in current descent of language: "narrative". "The narrative".

Unlike with phrases like "beg the question", which refers to a real and important logical fallacy but has been reduced to the equivalent of "raise the question" by a contemporary society mostly unfamiliar with logic or critical thinking, the incredible substitution of "narrative" for many superior/more precise terms is just laziness.

I pointed this (to me) striking pattern a few years ago to a friend who gets published/interviewed a fair amount - at first he wasn't sure he knew what I was talking about. A few months later, sensitized to it, he laughed and agreed.

Basically assuming the proposition that is to be proven or validated in the discussion, instead of actually proving or validating it.

What pronoun do we use for when AI steers a car into a bridge abutment?

With the tight integration of government within the control systems of so many connected systems, would "they" be appropriate when a NGO's wet operations targets an assassination via a "driver-less automobile" ?

† I've come to the conclusion that in the West NGOs include terror organizations that have a tax-exempt status and access to laundered government funds.

How does one objectively tell who the real 'Nazis" are?
Maybe, just maybe, if we could divide the masses into a neat two or three groups calling them the X, Y, and maybe N (for neither of the above)....

When X finds itself in political power, running the government, are they using that power of the government to round up Y?
When out of political power are they using street violence and assassinations of Y?

If yes, that is exactly what real commies, fascistd, and nazis did, and still do.

It always meant the same thing and wasn't derogatory. (I don't say 'yellow peril' unless I'm discussing a Fu Manchu novel.) Changes to English because of some BS anti-western slant is not to be followed. Since I don't have to placate a corporation or some academic snowflake, I am free to ignore such bilge. Sometimes loudly.

I am also annoyed by sloppy usage. Presently means soon. At present means now. I recall Watergate testimony where they kept saying subsequent as happening before, not after, an event.

There seems to be confusion on Who Dis?

Some of you said Ann Sheridan. One said Judy Garland. Rita Hayworth was another guess.

And this: And the scene is from “The man who came to dinner”, a semi-Christmas movie that should be playing this month.

294 There's no "correct" spelling of words from foreign languages that do not share a common/similar alphabet. In that case it's transliteration, in which the sounds/pronunciation of the original are reproduced, to the extent possible, in the transliterated form.

This applies to the Jewish festival of lights.

There are conventions, but not correct or incorrect.

Take the surname of the late Libyan dictator, for example. 10,000 years ago when SNL was funny and even intelligent at times, they had a great thing where they scrolled the dozens of transliterated versions of Brother Colonel's name on the screen behind the news reader during Weekend Update. Best illustration of the point I can think of.

OK. For the sake of argument, assume the Aussies had concealed-carry laws comparable to Florida or Texas, and the guy with the camera was packing a pistol. Not knowing the range, would be possible for him to take out the gunmen without putting bystanders beyond them at risk?

302 AOP, I'd say absolutely yes. Harassing fire could disrupt the terrorist's operation completely, whether you hit him or not. And from that angle missed shots don't look like they'd endanger anyone.

Haven't looked at all the videos, but there's more from the front/side, across the street looks like, with a terrorist on the bridge. At one point he ducks, as if sheltering from return fire of some kind. Dunno what to make of that at this point.

Range is less than about 150, based on perspective, unless phone cam has really good artifact free zoom. Assuming a pistol shot, it would be a difficult shot. I might risk that shot, given the distance and decent cover and/or exit possibilities.

Assuming rifle, which is not beyond the range of reason for semi-rural, it should be cake. And that is putting aside the second guessing of murderers attacking an armed populace, which does happen here.
