Two U.S. Soldiers Killed By ISIS Islamist In Syria

2 US Army Soldiers, Civilian Interpreter Killed by ISIS Gunman in Syria

Two U.S. Army soldiers and a civilian interpreter were killed, and three others were injured in an ambush by an ISIS gunman in Syria on Dec. 13, according to the Pentagon and U.S. Central Command.

Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said in a statement on social media that the attack occurred in the central Syrian town of Palmyra as U.S. forces were conducting a key leader engagement in support of ongoing counter-ISIS and counterterrorism operations.

The new president of Syria, Ahmed al-Sharaa, is supposedly against ISIS, but that is a tactical disagreement. Their overall goals are the same, so this attack, which will be condemned by Syria, is in furtherance of their shared goals of the creation of a worldwide caliphate and the destruction of the West.

And we are in bed with this maniac.

That would probably make more sense if they were with Syrian forces, who also suffered high casualties. As it reads now it sounds like they are just getting ambushed by hostile locals.

IIRC those guys killed in Niger in Trump's first term were with Nigerian forces at the time. The Nigerian Army is pretty hopeless though. Even Wagner can't do much with them. Maybe the "new" Syrian Army is the same.

Americans are sacrificing blood and treasure 6,000 miles away in Syria while somali inbred savages are running amok in Minnesota and places like Michigan and New Jerksey can't build minarets fast enough. I think Trump was lauding the "new" Syrian president earlier in his term. This term, not his first.

A president with ties to the Taliban or some other Islamic terrorist outfit. But, not the "worst" of the terrorist outfits to chose from.

Still, a poor decision IMO.

19 16 American troops haven't left Syria since Obama put them there. Assad only control parts of the country, so we had troops stationed in the Kurdish held areas. There was a major to-do late in Trump's term (or right after it) when officials admitted they had lied about pulling some troops out (though I'm not remembering all the details precisely).

We might be more engaged now with the new government than we were before, but in military terms this isn't a new deployment, just a re-tasking of an existing one.

What I’ve been told by a couple guys who had worked over there is that their actual purpose is to protect Chevron’s oil concessions in Western Syria, and they were placed there after Assad’s government became too weak to do so. “Isis” is just a catch all phrase for the renegades, gangs, and clans that make much of Syria a Mad Maxistan right now. Unfortunately, when a COB deletes a comment, all subsequent comment numbers get decremented. SO, if someone references the deleted comment, or a later one, by comment number, it won't be referencing the intended comment.

(There are perma-links to comments, but they're hidden in the comment-number links, and for tech reasons, often don't cue up if you try to use that URL.)

To be clear, it's usually best to quote-back some relevant bit of the comment to which you're replying, including the commenter nic-name. Tedious, but if you want to be sure, it's about the only way to do it.

Comments which are simply, like, "I agree" might be referencing any previous comment. It's often amusing but oftener confusing, as Li'l Abner might say.

Exactly. I think it's reason #[insert big number here] why ending the Ukraine War is so critical. Erdogan gets leverage from the West by being (mostly) very pro-Ukraine. As a result, pressure isn't put on him that otherwise would be (like regarding 'migrants' to Europe or controlling his proxies in Damascus.

'What I’ve been told by a couple guys who had worked over there is that their actual purpose is to protect Chevron’s oil concessions in Western Syria,...'

Chevron isn't much of a rallying point for a military commitment. My understanding of the reason for killing ISIS was because it was destabilizing Iraq and was going to be a new Al Queda.

'Trump is giving support to the new leader because as bad as he is, he’s still better than having the entire place become Libya 2.0'

My memory of Libya was that they killed Qaddafi, temporarily became jihadist and let a flood of migrants through. Which of those are we afraid of with Syria?

86 It may seem remote but don't think the rest of the world is ignorant about the program for wreaths being placed on U.S. Veterans' graves today, the Army-Navy Game which Trump will be attending, and so on.

I didn't respond in time - yeah, I'm a pita - but I had received pics of young children (yes, one related to me) in a largely special needs Scout troop in GA who are helping place wreaths honoring veterans in a cemetery.

They couldn't be prouder they're now old enough to help, or more respectful in the opportunity to do so.

87 And we are in bed with this maniac.

The guy before him was an eye doctor. Western Educated. Wanted to Westernize Syria. Dressed Western. Talked Western.

But he may or may not have dropped Tear Gas on a riot. You know ... the same stuff I had to sniff during Boot Camp.

And for that - Trump dropped missiles on him during the first go 'round. While everyone here cheered because "Trump". Oh - and CNN gave you film of all the people choking to death while others weren't bothered at all nursing them.

Its a real mystery wrapped in an enigma why nobody in the Middle East trust the United States. A real puzzle.
