Saturday Evening Movie Thread - 12/13/2025

Promised but Never Delivered

Movie studios have been trying to build franchises out of almost every major special effects spectacle since the 80s. It's the Star Wars and Indiana Jones influence. One film's box office gold is supposed to lead to another and another until everything just runs out of gas. And so, Hollywood is littered with purported starts to franchises that failed to go past the first entry. The Rocketeer, Lost in Space, The Dark Tower, they all ended with promises of further adventures that never came to be.

However, there are two over the past roughly fifteen years that hold special places in my heart, a pair of films so different from each other that are both considered huge box office bombs (one, the largest ever for a time) that I still yearn for sequels to. Now, just to make this clear...I do not think these sequels will ever materialize. One may...have a 1% chance of happening if lightning strikes the same spot fifteen times in a row, but otherwise, no. I don’t think these sequels will ever get made. The franchises are dead, and they will probably never be resurrected.

Those are: John Carter and King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. Both were big, wildly expensive spectacles based on tales old before any of the creatives were born. The first, based on the first of the Barsoom novels, A Princess of Mars, by Edgar Rice Burroughs, and the second a mishmash (let's be honest, every telling of King Arthur is a mishmash) of Arthurian legends. And I just...jive with them. I kind of love the former, and I really like the latter, and I've seen far worse films get sequels.

Box Office Failure

Let's get this out of the way: the tale of two studios spending way too much money on movies that they shouldn’t have spent too much on.

John Carter was the first live action feature film directed by Andrew Stanton, the PIXAR director who made Finding Nemo and WALL-E. Disney wanted a franchise to compete with the likes of Star Wars, so they gave Stanton, trusted creative, carte blanche to make a wildly expensive sci-fi adventure based on the granddaddy of sci-fi adventures. But...everything went wrong.

Stanton, with no experience in live-action films, essentially filmed the movie twice, making the film wildly, wildly expensive when it should have just had one wildly, at most. Months before the release of the film, Disney acquired the Marvel rights and were already talking to George Lucas about buying Star Wars, so the need for a boys’ adventure sci-fi series died out (and then they put Kathleen Kennedy in charge, which is another thing altogether). Stanton was given control of the marketing, and he approved some of the worst trailers for the film, selling the movie as some sort of somber experience without any real build up within the trailers themselves. Taylor Kitsch's miscasting (I think he’s...fine in the role, but he doesn't have the easy charm John Carter probably should have) became a central reason for critics to crap all over the film. And then the film is based on the granddaddy of sci-fi pulp, the kind of old story that has DNA is most modern sci-fi and fantasy today, making it decidedly old fashioned and feeling derivative.

Honestly, it doesn't surprise me that it was a box office bomb, but I fought the idea for weeks after its release, hoping against hope that there would be some great resurgence of interest in the property several weeks after release and everyone knowing it was a giant failure. My hopes were not answered.

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword is a contrasting tale of failure, though, starting with the fact that the trailers for the film are actually really good. I think they sell it well, making it look exciting and fun without any sort of misdirection towards the audience. Guy Ritchie, the director, had a history of bringing his hyperactive style to historically set films in his two Robert Downey Jr. starring Sherlock Holmes films, a connection which the trailers promote. And, it failed to make its production budget back, sources saying that Warner Bros. Lost $150 million on the movie. That's a lot of money, so the planned six film series was canceled after only one.

I think the explanation for King Arthur’s failure largely stems from the fact that mass audiences don't seem that interested in medieval fantasy films. There is one major exception in The Lord of the Rings (and The Hobbit), but medieval fantasy in general just doesn't seem to be a natural fit with mass audiences. They tend to eschew them rather them embrace them. The Chronicles of Narnia films, the first released right alongside The Lord of the Rings, steadily died out after three films. Eragon, based on a popular novel, was a huge bomb. Solomon Kane, based on the Robert E. Howard character, made no money. You can point back to the 80s and films like Excalibur, but that only made $35 million (a profit for the $11 million film, granted). The 80s were probably the height of the medieval fantasy genre's popularity across the board, and not even Conan the Barbarian hit $100 million (the modern telling, released in 2011, made about $60 million off of a $90 million budget).

I mean, I really like medieval fantasy. I jive with it. But mass audiences don't seem all that keen on it.

The Future that Never Was

So, what would have been? What if Disney hadn’t been buying Star Wars and had decided to back John Carter completely? What if Stanton had managed his set better and spent half as much money? What if audiences had just decided to give King Arthur a shot? What would we have seen?

Well, the easy one to answer is John Carter's supposed sequels. John Carter follows the basic plot of A Princess of Mars quite closely. There are additions, like the Therns gain a lot more prevalence in this early story than in Burroughs' series, and some specifics around transportation between Earth and Barsoom gets created, but in the larger plot points. It's A Princess of Mars. So, what would the second movie have been? Well, largely The Gods of Mars, the tale of what John Carter does when he returns to Barsoom ten years later. It would tell of the fight against Iss, the self-proclaimed goddess of Mars, the Black Pirates, the Therns, and Zondanga with Carter reconnecting with his friend Tars Tarkas, his wife Dejah Thoris, and meeting his son, Cathoris, as recklessly brave as his father. And then, the planned sequel would have seen the adaptation of The Warlord of Mars which sees John Carter becoming ruler of the entire planet.

I'm sure Stanton would have kept the basic narrative bones and rearranged a lot of details, but it's not hard to imagine where that series would have gone, and it would have entertained me greatly.

The more interesting question, though, is around King Arthur. As I said, any tale of King Arthur at this point is a mishmash of legend, Romance, and history, so there's no "true" telling of it. Le Morte d’Arthur by Thomas Malory disagrees in many details with Geoffrey of Monmouth's sketches in Historia Regum Britanniae. And it's a tale that’s been told by many, many people over more than a thousand years. Ritchie turning it into a cross between Conan the Barbarian and Ritchie's own low-level gangster movies was a definite creative choice to push Arthur in a new direction, but he also barely scratched the surface of the established tales while adding his own twists.

We only see Merlin once, in a flashback, and we don't even see his face. The character called Mage was originally written as Guinevere, but any mention of her being Arthur's future wife were scrubbed out of the edit and through ADR, so they could still re-introduce her. Morgan le Fay is never even mentioned. There is a character called Mordred in the beginning, killed in the prologue, but that doesn't preclude the introduction in a later edition of the traditional Mordred (Arthur’s son/nephew by way of Morgan le Fay). In terms of the Knights of the Round Table, we only get Bedivere, Percival, and Tristan. So, no Lancelot, no Gawain, and no Galahad (there are dozens more in the legends over the centuries). Really, sequels were wide open.

And the first sequel I would have liked to see might have gone something like this: Merlin and Morgan le Fay are in combat in the north, a war of mages far from Camelot. Lancelot comes from France to challenge the knights at a tourney (being a Guy Ritchie film, there would be bare-knuckle boxing). Lancelot is big, strong, and arrogant, and he is also the only man who could be Arthur’s equal in combat. They bond over beating each other up, but Lancelot has a secret that even he doesn’t know: he’s being manipulated by Morgan le Fay into acting as a distraction. Merlin sends Mage (not Guinevere) to ask for help. The second act is breaking Lancelot's spell. The third act is a big fight, ala Shadows of the Colossus where Arthur and Lancelot in particular have to climb a giant forest creature, his head and shoulders populated with trees since he's from the earth, to fight Morgan or some heavy at the top. One big, expensive action setpiece later, the knights have added a figure (maybe even Galahad in tow), and we're ready for movie #3.

Never Happening

Really, the two original films I just really enjoy watching. Patrick H. Willems described what he called "vibe movies", movies less about plot and more about just being in the world created by the filmmakers (his central film in his video was Christopher Nolan’s Tenet). And that's kind of how I feel about John Carter and King Arthur: Legend of the Sword in very different ways.

John Carter is a big, earnest, sometimes goofy, old-school adventure film. Its big heart it wearshu unironically on its sleeve as it tells the story of a rootless man finding something to fight for once more. It’s told with color and energy, and I just get on its wavelength and enjoy the somewhat silly ride.

King Arthur's Conan the Barbarian influences (its first shot is of a temple that resembles Thulsa Doom's temple in Milius' film alongside a tower that looks a lot like the Serpent's Tower in the same film, and there’s a lot of snake stuff overall, including a giant snake in the end) mixed with Ritchie's low-level gangster stuff is a weird mix, but it's something I really enjoy. The film is imperfect (the mix is sometimes not that great, a lot of the CGI is fun but feels wasteful and indulgent, and there's an emotional bit for Vortigern, the bad guy, late in the film that's just poorly established), but I still just find myself bobbing my head back and forth to Daniel Pemberton's soundtrack anyway. Structurally, it's actually surprisingly sound, even if Ritchie is throwing things in a blender within individual sequences.

And both movies, I feel, artistically deserved sequels. Mostly because, well, I liked them. And I'd rather have Hollywood spend money to entertain me than making another Fast and Furious movie.

But it was never meant to be. My tastes were always going to be more niche, and that's just the world I live in.

What movies that promised sequels that never materialized do you sometimes still yearn for?

10 I liked "John Carter", darn it. Yes, Taylor K. With his flowing locks is not the grim John Carter with the scimitar smile, but he's an appealing actor and gets by on charm. Tars Tarkas and Woola make the movie for me, and the style of the Martian tech is right off an Amazing Stories cover.

15 I liked John Carter; I think it was the marriage of old fashioned fantasy and sci-fi (plus all that desert) that appealed to me. Even as a bomb, it's so vastly superior to the crap Disney is turning out today.

I liked The Rocketeer, too; didn't know that one or more sequels originally had been contemplated.

21 Guy Ritchie's movie sorta works if you remove all the Arthurian stuff and make it a generic/new fantasy setting.

It's the Arthurian roots that make me reject this movie. I mean, it hardly has Merlin, it makes Arthur grow up around whores and pimps (such nobility and role models!) and it has Kung Fu George. Fucking Kung Fu George in Arthurian England.

*eyetwitch*

John Carter was silly when it should have been exciting and chaste when it should have been sexy. I never have managed to finish it, I just bounce off the first half hour every time. IMO, it's just too stupid to live.

23 Seriously, if Hollywood was really wholly into girlboss characters at least SOMEONE, SOMEWHERE would have done Anne McCaffery "Dragonriders of Pern", but NOOOOOOOOOO because that series had "normal" M/F relationships where each pair STRENGTHENED each other!

25 Miguel, I liked the period intro, if you mean Carter's message to his nephew(?).

43 John Carter was a good film if you'd read the books.
I read the first two.

I enjoyed the film.

But Disney didn't know how to market it, and most of the population had never heard of John Carter or the Princess of Mars, and it looked like a cheesy alien kids movie in the trailers.

There was also that 'Mars Curse' on Disney as Mars Needs Moms had bombed badly not too long before.

I wish they'd made a sequel to the film as the basic story is pretty interesting and the way John Carter travels to Mars so mysteriously and then comes back to Earth just as mysteriously and with decades having passed.

It could have made a decent franchise if done right, or at least a TV series.

48 I just watched the latest Knives Out movie, Wake Up Dead Man and quite liked it, much more than Glass Onion and even more than the original. Part of this is because I like shows about ordinary people much more than those about the rich and famous. Part because it is set in a small Catholic parish church. And the plot is an impossible murder referencing John Dickson Carr. Some may see it as sacrilegious or even blasphemous but I don't. So, recommended.

I see shorts for these little Peacock and Netflix and Hulu series and in every one of them, people are screaming at each other or accusing each other of malfeasance or betrayal or infidelity. Dinners always feature some dark revelation or hatred for someone else. Nobody is polite or charitable or supportive or loving. The dialogue may be sardonic but never funny. The flick I'd have liked to see become a franchise was Remo Williams. Fred Ward and Joel Grey were delightful in it.

McCaffrey's Pern? Would make a NICE series of films, but what would our current crop of enlightened filmmakers do to it on its way to the screen? One shudders to think.

58 So glad you mentioned John Carter. I thought I was about the only one who enjoyed it. Haven't been to a movie theater since the 2003 release of Return of the King but do get DVDs now and then and this was one. Damn! What a fun movie. Old style adventure, plenty of humor but not a parody like the Batman TV series. And great special effects. The more I learned critics hated it the more I wanted to see it. Once again: my preference 1, critics 0. Lynn Collins completed the appeal.

Sorry I didn't see it on a big screen.

69 Also two great sets of books that could be made into a whole slew of movies or series':
The Miles Vorkosigan books from Lois McMaster Bujold. It's ... well, I can't describe it except to say he pulls a lot of shenanigans to solve problems. Pulling them off relies partly on his brains, people's tendency to mis-underestimate him, and some connection to power.

The Chanur novels of C.J. Cherryh. Her aliens are not just humans in rubber suits, but think differently. The Cuckoo's Egg could also be done, if it was done right. I doubt her Foreigner novels would translate well to film, though you might try them as animated movies.

96 John Carter is a mystery to me as well. I avoided in its theatrical run, based on the near-universal panning it received.

A while back it came up a suggested freebie in Amazon Prime Video. "What the hell... I can just turn it off when it starts to suck." (see: "The Rings of Power".. I rejected that one less than ten minutes in).

To my surprise, it didn't suck at all. I've seen far, far, worse F&SF movies. I completely agree that it's sequel-worthy (as you suggest, Burroughs wrote about a billion of those books, so it's not like there's a shortage of material).

In regard to Master and Commander, I think one reason it was failed to garner any awards was that it was up against the juggernaut of The Return of the King. That probably hurt it at the box office at least some, too,

A fine, fine film, which I need to watch again.

That's one of the other bits. John Carter is a BIG SCREEN flick. Or it should be. Something to make vast red deserts look really vast, and 4-armed Martians leaping out from the rocks look huge and terrifying.

Pern would have to be. It's about flying dragons in the sky and dogfighting with them. If you shot it to look right on a TV, it would suffer.

103 Zelazny's Amber books would make a nice series of flicks.

So would Lawrence Block's Matt Scudders -- two were done, one with Jeff Bridges and the other with Liam Neeson (the better of the two). But no series of films, darn it.

So would John D. MacDonald's Travis McGees -- two were done, one with Rod Taylor and one for television with Sam Elliott. No series of films, darn it. Taylor's, Darker Than Amber, is worth a watch just for the absolutely brutal fight sequence between Taylor and William Smith at the finish. No stunt doubles.

Quite a few films from Westlake's Parker novels, but they're all over the map.

116 Oh, and yeah, the Martians in the books are way more nekkid than they are in the movie (this is Disney)... both men and women wear nothing but a sort of harness on which they can hang weapons and jewelry.

"And the sight which met my eyes was that of a slender, girlish figure,
similar in every detail to the earthly women of my past life. She did
not see me at first, but just as she was disappearing through the
portal of the building which was to be her prison she turned, and her
eyes met mine. Her face was oval and beautiful in the extreme, her
every feature was finely chiseled and exquisite, her eyes large and
lustrous and her head surmounted by a mass of coal black, waving hair,
caught loosely into a strange yet becoming coiffure. Her skin was of a
light reddish copper color, against which the crimson glow of her
cheeks and the ruby of her beautifully molded lips shone with a
strangely enhancing effect.

She was as destitute of clothes as the green Martians who accompanied
her; indeed, save for her highly wrought ornaments she was entirely
naked, nor could any apparel have enhanced the beauty of her perfect
and symmetrical figure."

146 Angel Face (Rating 3/4) Full Review "I think it's solidly good, undone by some late stage choices that grind things to a halt. However, the line on characters, the production itself, and the noirish coat of paint all make Angel Face a compelling drama that Preminger manages well, even if Howard Hughes had hired him to torture Jean Simmons." [Library]

forget where/when I heard this, (perhaps a Mitchum docu?) but Otto had Mitchum slap Jean Simmons, and kept wanting him to do it, over and over. Well, after about 3rd or 4th take, Jean was crying and if IIRC, Otto wanted more takes. Mitchum said, no, no more, and if you keep pushing this, I will get you fired....that was that... I so respect Robert for doing that...

The best thing about Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade was the interplay of Ford with Sean Connery. The ones that followed Last Crusade were crap. Not bad acting, bad stories.

Still debating whether we want to go to the theater on Christmas Day to see It's a Wonderful Life. Could be fun, even if we do have every frame and sound memorized. (One of my regular prayers, in plaintive Zuzu's voice: "Fix it, Daddy!")

204 I am reading Leigh Brackett's Skaith series with Eric John Stark. If it had been written in the 30's it would have been a John Carter pastiche, but when it was written it was more of a nod to Tolkien. It is, however, the basic plan for a D&D campaign, with much better prose. It is also the original "grim-dark" adventure with a possibly positive conclusion
It would make a wonderful series.

I also think Bill Adams and Cecil Brooks' completely unknown Ethan Larkspur books, The Unwound Way and The End of Fame could make a blockbuster series, though it would pretty much take James Cameron's effects crew to do the denouement.

And of course, if there ever was a need for a Logan's Run type series with a happier ending, Tanith Lee's Don't Bite the Sun books would be excellent.

I think it still rates as best TV miniseries ever made. The cast was incredible, a list all the way through.
The character that stands out the most to me - and I think to everyone who watches it - is John Hurt’s Caligula. This is when I first realized that Hurt was a truly great actor; several versions of Caligula have appeared over the years, but Hurt’s portrayal is do skilled, and so compelling that you can never think of that character any other way. He made it his own.
In a similar way, I think the same about Peter Ustinov’s Nero.

226 I actively hated the trailers for that King Arthur movie, because it seemed the epitome of the 'wear a franchise name as a skin-suit' trope. It didn't look remotely Arthurian, it didn't look remotely Brittish... It looked like it was cut from the same cloth that D+ Willow, Netflix Witcher, or Amazon Wheel of Time, and Amazon Rings of Power would later be cut from.

You want to make a fantasy movie/tv show like that, fine. I've watched a few of them. (The Outpost was from that cloth, the Mythica movies were actually better than that cloth, and Curse of the Dragonslayer was better than anything else in the past decade) But for that, you have to sell your work on its own merits. Not by hijacking some other franchise that I already like.

Second, this movie miss a golden opportunity for some truly subversive messaging! The Green Martians have a messed up society that produces a lot of evil people. But there was one Martain who was genuinely good hearted; Sola. And what made her good? She had parents. Not even overly sentimental parents, just parents that acknowledged her and cared for her. And that was all it took to create empathy in a society of psychopaths. That....would have been a truly inspiring message...

264 While not actual sequels, films that follow because of the original's success are usually terrible. Like the first three Star Wars movies, the three LOTR film are basically one movie. Everything that followed has been mostly disappointing. The Hobbit trilogy has some of the elements the worked for LOTR but the writers got too cute with the script and stretched it out way too long. That Helm Hammerhead animation just became another girl power thing. The Amazon Rings of Power fiasco should have been buried along with the careers of the entire production staff before a frame was filmed.

I can only hope these follow-ons led folks to read the books.

Which would be funnier? The movie or the unending string of terrorist attacks which would follow it?

Spoiler: The unending string of terrorist attacks happen regardless.

I have heard that it’s difficult indeed to divide Afghans from mules.

How did Tolkien ever write something like that?

You can read the Hobbit in less time than it takes to watch the movie.

Usually it's goats. I think mules qualify you as transgender under Afghan law.

Yea, the book doesn't take long to read. Jackson could have just followed the book, for the most part, made one movie, and it would have worked fine, but nah.

I figured it was some Hollywood bullcrap.

I burnt up the better part of a flight back from Europe watching it.

310 I got to see a Q&A about storytelling back in my Sundance Film Fest era, and Stanton was one of the panelists. He's clearly brilliant, and incredibly passionate about stories. Maybe he should have started with a smaller live action movie before taking on this project. The sequels sound like they would have had cool plots!

I still don't get why films like this fail, and Avatar makes a billion with every movie. It boggles my understanding. The only thing I can think of is James Cameron understands showmanship, and how to sell a story in buzz and marketing before it hits theaters.

Maybe if it had been titled "Princess of Mars," it would have sold it better in the marketing?

Treasure Planet is another one that was so brilliant in what it did, for boy's adventure and making a pirate story sci-if, but then bombed so bad.

Boys need adventure films, and action, and princesses to save in another castle, and heroes to emulate. Hopefully that vacuum gets filled with positive stories at some point. A new Star Wars, a new indie jones. The directors Spielberg and Lucas mentored never really took up that baton.

Tolkien had too much self respect to put something this ridiculous in his stories.

The Rock is a great movie.

Armageddon is a good, enjoyable movie.

He should've gotten an Oscar for direction for the first Transformers movie. That movie is extremely well paced and expertly handles multiple story threads, better than Peter Jackson did in LOTR. I'm not even a big Bay fanboy buy I'll give credit to where credit is due.

Both Bay produced TMNT movies are great too. The first better than the second, but the opening of the second is absolutely epic.

It was a studio greed thing, they first required a two parter then doubled down on their greed and demanded a trilogy. Del Toro then quit and Jackson had to go back into the director's chair.

That is what I recall.

316 My hot take on the Hobbit movies: Everything about Tauriel is fanfiction. However, it is very well-written fanfiction! The self-insert character is super-competent, but still has a valid reason for feeling oppressed; she has reached the limit of her career advancement. Her king is not unkind, but still dismissive of her. The chemistry between her and Kili is natural; he's a landless and poor (despite being a prince) and he's starstruck by her beauty and her homeland. She yearns to see the world beyond her forest, and he's a charming guy who' seen all the things she dreams about...It's got everything you could ask for in a fanfic!

Unfortunately, THIS ISN'T SUPPOSED TO BE FANFICTION! This is supposed to be an adaptation of The Hobbit! We only get these movies once in a generation, and you just ruined our generation's chance!

Yet another movie ruined by studio demands. If they had just waited a few years, and let Peter Jackson finish a script before filming, and not force the project into an unnecessary trilogy... There were good moments in those movies, but a lot of unnecessary nonsense, as well.

317 Count me as a fan of "John Carter". Good script, good acting, excellent special effects. Its failure, though, came in part from having a lead who was handsome and athletic, but lacking leading-man charisma; and in part due to dreadful marketing. (It amazes me that the word "Mars" appeared nowhere.) It was fun, though, to see Ciaran Hinds and James Purefoy from "Rome" wearing kilts and swords again. Also, pulling ERB himself into the story at the end was a nice touch.
