Overnight Open Thread [12/15/2025]

[Sorry the ONT is so early today...]

McKinley Prominence.jpg

Topographic prominence is different than height, and Mt. McKinley is the clear winner in America. Then comes Mauna Kea, which didn't surprise me at all (I thought it was going to be #1), then Mt. Rainier in Washington, although it is rapidly crumbling into insignificance because it no longer has a spine. Then come a bunch of Alaskan peaks nobody has ever heard of, then my personal favorite slides in at #9: Mount Whitney! Mt. Shasta is #11, which is also in my favorites list, mostly because you can see it from miles and miles away. Hell, you can see it from Highway 5!

***

The press is a gang of cruel faggots. Journalism is not a profession or a trade. It is a cheap catch-all for fuckoffs and misfits -- a false doorway to the backside of life, a filthy piss-ridden little hole nailed off by the building inspector, but just deep enough for a wino to curl up from the sidewalk and masturbate like a chimp in a zoo-cage.
-- Hunter S. Thompson

If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Then quit. No use being a damn fool about it.
-- W.C. Fields

Fewer men would have turned to stone if Medusa had bigger boobs.

******

I will be treble-sinewed, -hearted, -breathed,
And fight maliciously. For when mine hours
Were nice and lucky, men did ransom lives
Of me for jests; but now I'll set my teeth
And send to darkness all that stop me.
-- William Shakespeare: Antony and Cleopatra, Act 3, Scene 13

This should be the West's mantra. We are in a war for the survival of our culture, and we are losing, even before most of us know that we are in a fight!

Conservatism is, shallowly, the conserving of the old order. It has failed, and our new goal should be a return to the old order of things. And if that means sending frigates to the Barbary Coast, bombers to Iran, and dispatching Polish heavy cavalry to save the day, well, it's not such a bad idea. But we should not do it alone, and if that means that Western Europe surrenders to the hordes, then so be it. If they will not fight for their own existence, we shouldn't either.

******

Stupid, and funny!
******

timemachine25.jpg

This made me laugh. How true it is. I love humor that has more than one meaning too!

******

What the hell is this? And why are children cursing so much funnier than when adults do it? Sure, it's dubbed (I assume) but it still gave me a chuckle, and only Ebenezer Scrooge wouldn't laugh. So...Are YOU Ebenezer Scrooge?

******

The formerly "Great" Britain.

******

Wishful Thinking, by Tris Munsick & The Innocents.

Who? It's classic country, recommended by commenter "Pete Bog," whose musical taste is better than his Paella-making technique.

***

And as long as we are slumming with Pete Bog's musical picks, how about Gabriel the Bull, doing Guardian Angels.

Two bands I have never heard of, but as my BiL in the business tells me, there are tons of absolutely fantastic bands that have not been, and probably never will be discovered.

******

For f*k's sake: Study reveals which English-speaking countries use the f-word the most -- and who has more fun doing so
Of course, the use of dirty words didn’t just differ between nations. According to the study, studies show people drop f-bombs more on social media than blogs and other mediums, especially — and perhaps contrary to popular belief — when conversing with acquaintances rather than close friends.

In fact, swearing was exceedingly rare in circles of fewer than 15 people, no matter how well they knew each other.

I think this study is a mass of bullshit, and nothing more than a make-work project for some under-utilized graduate students who are panicking that they might actually have to work some day.

Besides, they never answered the basic question: Is it "For fuck's sake," or "for fucks' sake?"

Inquiring minds want to know!

Orpheus.

I couldn’t believe it either.

Well, he got up on that stage and, let me tell you, that dude has a set of pipes. Truly. He makes Freddy Mercury sound like Oderus Urungus. It was magical listening to him. Everybody in the place was content to just let him stay in stage and roll, but it got cut short. He got mad and left in a huff when somebody asked him to sing Total Eclipse of the Heart.

104 We got into a discussion here early today about crazy people and got me thinking about some I have known. (I’ve known way more than my share!) so back in the 90’s I knew a plumber named Nickels, I knew his elevator didn’t go all the way to the top but I thought he’d be handy if I had a plumbing problem. Still if you talked to him much you realized there were some circuits loose.

So one day there was this big excitement in town, someone had called a bomb threat into the biggest downtown bank! Police everywhere, they even called the FBI, and then I found out Nickles had been arrested. Why did he do it? Well he had a girlfriend who was sick of her shit and who’d told him she didn’t want to see him or talk to him anymore and not to come by her place. She worked at the bank. As she came out, she saw him standing there, and he said “well I wanted to talk to you, and I figured if everybody had to come out you would too, and we could talk.”
Yep, he just stood in front of the bank and said “yeah I did it.” He didn’t understand why people thought that was wrong.

197 So every year my wife gets me a pair of Christmas pjs at bass pro shops. With the idea being that’s what I’ll wear next year Christmas morning. She and a friend both bring their kid to see Santa and I get pjs.

But the issue is my wife always buys way too big a size for me. Santa size. I don’t get it. Maybe all the normal sizes are gone by the time she goes. And it’s made worse by the fact that they can’t just make fat pjs. They’re scaled up in every dimension. Like for a nine foot tall giant. So I have to have them really fastened tight and then the legs all rolled up.

But this year I got a call from her while she’s at the store and she asks for my size. Good so far. Then she asks if I’m looking for anything new underwear wise, and frankly, now I’m frightened.

215 Had a nice win in the shop today. The heater fan on #3 Suburban was very noisy, and would only run at all on high blower. Because it was mild out, I took the fan motor out. Well, a shot of oil wasn't going to fix it. The back end bearing was wallowed right out, with a 1/8" gap between one side of the shaft and what was left of the bearing. No other fan motor on hand.
Cut the bearing dimple out of the end bell of the motor with die grinder, pried remains of Oilite bushing. Opened hole with reamer to fit O.D. of new Oilite bushing from junk box. I.D. was perfect fit on shaft. Pressed in new bushing; motor spins freely (oiled both bushings, of course). Bent a flat washer to act as bushing retainer, and spot-welded it to end bell of motor. Test-ran motor, worked. Put fan cage back on, reinstall in Suburban. Runs as quiet as it possibly can on high blower. Resistor block NFG, so low speeds unavailable. Tomorrow's job.

Junk 45 dollar part, made good again for $0.

After my initial surgery, first thing I said was, "Is Joe Biden still dead?" My daughter was a little disturbed, maybe thinking I must be out of it. So, I said, "Am I alive?" She answered, "Yes, you're alive." Then I asked, "Am I still a guy?" Yes, again. Well, okay, then! I was glad to be alive.

Before they started putting me semi-under for a blood clot clean-out, I was singing, "Lying here staring at the ceiling, waiting for a sleepy feeling." Some guy noted that I was singing, but I don't think any of those folks in the surgery recognized that obscure Beatles bit.

I had to force myself not to make jokes in the hospital. Don't want them thinking that old man is losing his wits. "Birthdate?" "1852...."

I was acquainted with a Marine who could attest to that. Arterial bleeding in the limbs can be taken care of with a tourniquet, but anything in the trunk or pelvic region is truly problematic. Best you can do is direct pressure, like kneeling, full weight, on the site of the wound. And even then it's still pretty iffy.

I would not buy that. It ties up your angle grinder, so you need to have two of them (as you should, anyway). Anything that is in the angle grinder's capacity to cut, you can do nearly as well freehand, if the work is in a vise.

Hit a few flea markets, yard sales, or swap meets, and you should be able to find a working chop saw for $50.

The hearing aide batteries were dying. The briefer kept going and the boss was pulling out the hearing aides and suddenly the batteries go bouncing across the table. Sudden silence. Google's AI is so full of shit...

I just typed in "when is the fake holiday kwanza"

Google's AI tells me: Kwanzaa is an annual cultural celebration observed from December 26 through January 1 every year.
While some critics have called Kwanzaa a "fake" or "made-up" holiday because it was created relatively recently in 1966 by activist Dr. Maulana Karenga, it is widely celebrated by millions of people of African descent in the United States and around the world. It is not a religious holiday, and many people celebrate both Christmas and Kwanzaa.

In 1971, Karenga was sentenced to one to ten years in prison on counts of felony assault and false imprisonment.[22] A May 14, 1971, article in the Los Angeles Times described the testimony of one of the women:

Deborah Jones, who once was given the Swahili title of an African queen, said she and Gail Davis were whipped with an electrical cord and beaten with a karate baton after being ordered to remove their clothes. She testified that a hot soldering iron was placed in Miss Davis' mouth and placed against Miss Davis' face and that one of her own big toes was tightened in a vise. Karenga, head of US, also put detergent and running hoses in their mouths, she said. They also were hit on the heads with toasters.[23]

I wonder if Miss Jones and Miss Davis celebrate Kwanzaa?

306 The machine shop had a chop saw for the machine operator to chop the cutting tool to the correct distance. It was a block of steel about 1" square with a carbide cutting tip.

The saw was a flat table with a 3" fence. One would place the cutting tool against the fence then step on a peddle below the table which would activate the motor and with foot pressure raise the blade and cut the piece.
No clamps, no guards, nothing but a big spinning blade and that piece up against the fence. Scariest part of the job.

You use a pacemaker? One of the manufacturers of those items apparently now has a model that is "hardened" for welding with up to 135 amps of current, which is the limit for most Mig welders that plug into a regular 20-amp outlet.

Or buy yourself an oxy-acetylene outfit. They are not hugely expensive, but if you weld a lot, the acetylene gets spendy. There is a Hell of a lot you can do with oxy-acetylene. Welding, cutting, brazing, forging. It's slower-paced than electric welding, but you can do fine work, once you build a little skill. And it is really a trip to wield that torch, and literally melt steel with fire, such a satisfying experience.

Latest pass of the @esa Sentinel-2 L2A shows the @USNavy's USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-7 alongside the fast combat support ship USNS Supply (T-AOE-6) in the Caribbean Sea.
Geolocation: 15.725009, -69.263563

14 ships in SOUTHCOM now as one of two fast combat support ships, USNS Supply (T-AOE 6), rejoins the Gerald R. Ford carrier strike group in the Caribbean. Supply supported GRFCSG in Europe and was recently in Norfolk, likely to onload whatever’s required for what’s to come.

We put any more ships in the Caribbean the sea level will rise.

344 One of the main things with cutting torches it care and proper maintenence of the tip. I see guys just toss them into the bin on the cart and I cringe. I have my own set of tips I use and nobody else touches them.
If I see you using one as a hammer to knock a cut off I'll make sure you are fired.

Out of a Canon.

So-called AI isn't capable of assessing the truth value of its inputs much less its own outputs. Nor is it capable of assessing the moral or ethical value of either its inputs or outputs.

All it does is put words in the combinations they are statistically most likely to occur based in it training data.

Any appearance of considerations of morality, ethicality, or truthfulness are a result of the filters and weighting done by the psychos who program the things.

353 Welp, please, if you have a moment, a little prayer my way would be lovely. Shoulder surgery on Wednesday, and I will be one-armed for at least six weeks, meaning DH will be on call for... well... just about everything for that time period.

We went through this before. The last surgeon fixed 80% of it, and then PT ruined the other 20%, so here we are again. Dammit. Anyone with any structural training at all would have predicted that, but apparently this is beyond surgeon's training.

With a little luck this will fix it. Takes about 6 months of rehab. Which will cut into farming season, but so be it.

I can't even knit without pain, so it is required. Of course, if this doesn't work, then the shoulder gets replaced entirely. Let's not do that, shall we?

357 Well I am back to say good night, one of my neighbors stopped by and I had two puffs off of a joint that she proffered and a couple of glasses of wine. She went home, I cannot wrap anything that isn't inside of a box and Christmas cards are right out. Good night, Horde, I really love you, the family that I would choose.

Leaves a nice tip on the bar for JQ.

Sounds like Ben Nevis in Scotland. It's the highest peak in the UK. I've been near it 3 times, at the town that is at it's base twice (Ft. William), and I have never seen it. All three times I was in that area, the cloud base was about 10 ft above my head. Scotland, yo!

Not what you're referring to, but -- Every far northern city has a fog of ice crystals during the winter. It is caused by the combustion associated with human activity. Every gas-heated or oil-heated building, and every automobile, contributes.

I spent a winter in Edmonton Alberta, and the gray overcast was in effect for the entire season. That may be one reason that there was a porno store and a liquor store on every block.
