I think I'll buy two kits just in case... not.

You'd think Crucial would cut the price since they're going out of business in a few months anyhow.

9 Morning, 'rons and 'ronettes. 6 bitter degrees here at Stately Poppins Manor.

One of the few - perhaps only - good things about this time of year is that it's so cold I don't want to get dressed and go anywhere, which keeps me from spending money. Especially at the local pub.

Not a full 3 hours' worth of work ahead, but enough that I'm longing for retirement, a warm bed and sleep.

Work on the new novel is at a standstill, food doesn't taste good, I've got a house full of books and no interest in any of them and even a hot cup of tea isn't satisfying. Just another episode of my usual anhedonia.

It's been three weeks since Pete Hegseth belched out that Mark Kelly could be brought back to active duty and prosecuted. Kelly continues to walk around free as a bird. Which is exactly what I said would happen and, IMO, why the GOP deserves to lose the midterms.

One serious system, three (now four) pretty decent systems, and five smaller/older ones. Including laptops though.

If it wasn't for the memory shortage I wouldn't have bought this new one. But right now memory is so expensive that with this configuration (64GB RAM, 1TB SSD for $600) they're effectively giving the computer away.

The Mac Mini, a computing appliance it seems, is another good value at $600 provided you prefer the Apple ecosystem. You can even swap out the internal SSD and there are multiple docks that match the style and size of the Mac Mini and can host additional storage in some cases up to as much as 16 GB of SSDs.

I have a device like these on my purchase list over the next 12 months to see if they can meet my current computing needs.

I have a dedicated phone set to maximum volume, and connected to my laptop via Bluetooth so that plays the alarm as well.

It is loud because I have a big house now that I've moved out into the country and I don't want to miss it. But when it goes off while I'm sitting right next to it I jump out of my skin.

The maintenance today was because one of the database servers had a memory leak and was triggering random alerts at random times before going back to working perfectly again just seconds later. People got tired of that pretty quickly!

Yeah. There's one big catch there.

You can indeed swap out the internal SSD at a pretty reasonable price. But you can't reinstall from a USB drive. You need to boot it from another Mac.

The base model Mini is a good deal if that's all you need, but if you upgrade RAM and storage be prepared to pay up.

Technically you can replace the SSD module in the newer Minis. Apple doesn't sell the modules, and third party suppliers are few and far between. And due to the way Apple locks their stuff down, you need another Mac to install the OS and initialize the firmware on the new SSD in the Mini.

They are good quality products for the money, and if you don't mind your computer being so locked down and almost impossible to upgrade.

39 So my son had his job interview yesterday. It took longer to get to the place that the actual interview took ( about 20 minutes) . It was a group of people interviewing him and it was an interview with a woman candidate . He felt he did pretty well, but she had a degree in chemistry. He had lots of lab classes in school and can surely do the work, but who knows what they have in mind.?He is supposed to hear by Friday.

Thanks for the prayers. Please continue them if you can.

I do have the hard drive I took out of the frst laptop with an old version of the Mac OS, so I guess it would work in a pinch.

If you put yourself in her place, working that job, dealing with that crowd in a mall all day, for 5 or 6 days a week, I can certainly understand her frustration.

If she's been dealing with that kind of crap for her customers for a long time, it's no wonder she finally had all she could take and snapped back.

60 The middle and top Qualcomm V2 CPUs look to be quite capable and would be ideally suited for something like a Windows based Mac Mini computer.

Unexpectedly a hinge on my Surface Pro 8 snapped and because Microsoft wants $500 to replace it, the SP8 instantly became scrap. I was able to replace it during the Black Friday sales with a identically spec'd Qualcomm based Surface Pro 11 for $750. So far everything is working flawlessly with battery life that is ridiculously excellent.

With that in mind, a hockey puck style PC with a Qualcomm mid-range V2 chip would seem to be a viable desktop PC. These computing appliances seem to have their place these days, especially if you're one that doesn't upgrade PCs once they're purchased.

61 Since everybody talks about Babylon 5 all the time, I've finally started watching it.

I'd seen some of it over the years, but never watched the entire series. I didn't have enough time to watch it in the 90s, if I watched any TV series it was ST: NG, or DS9, then Voyager.

It's on Amazon Prime to buy, but I'm not paying $2.99 an episode or $24.99 a season.

Tubi has the entire series via video on demand, though, with commercials. So I'll check it out there and see what all the fuss is about.

I certainly sympathize with you MP4. After my husband died I took little pleasure from the two activities I enjoyed most, knitting and reading. I still am afflicted. I order books I think I'll read but they sit on my bedside chest staring me accusingly in the face. Knitting is a complete no go. I did force myself to go see the movie "Hamnet" yesterday. Went to 6:30 Mass yesterday morning, as it was a holy day of obligation. Left the house around 5:00, which would have gotten me to church a bit before 6:00, giving me half an hour to say my Rosary.

On returning home, I later got a message that the client was dissatisfied with a project I'd done. Now I have to sit through a phone call today. And the water well went out and won't refill. A really great day.

I'll be honest with you: The first season is a bit rough. The acting is a bit bad and the effects are somewhat cheesy (Although I liked the episode "TKO). By the second season, it really hits its stride.

Mind you, the fact that one of the lead actors was dealing with severe mental issues might have contributed a bit to the problems.

The first episode is on in the background now.
I've seen it before, and a few after it, I believe.

That may be my problem, it's a slow show at first, as you say, so I usually gave up after a few episodes when I tried to watch it before.

I'll give it a shot for the entire series, since the old Western TV shows are getting repetitive, because I've seen so many by now.

you're seriously thinking that McCarthy owned guns like that? he was a person obsessed with books--specific subjects--he delighted in reading arcane subjects & (evidently) replicating them in his prose.
many writers do this, so skillfully that readers think they "know" these subjects intimately.
as I'd once told John Updike how impressed I was with his knowledge of gardening & his wife Martha interrupted to say, "Oh, John gets it all out of books."

Cormac McCarthy owned over a hundred rifles and pistols—so many, in fact, that he loaned several period firearms to a production company during filming of 2004’s THE ALAMO. In addition, he built his own big game rifles. Here’s a schematic he drew for a rifle barrel:

I've mentioned before that I really don't have anyone in my life I can be completely open with, so being able to vent here (even if it actively irritates some people) goes a way towards easing the depression.

I honestly don't know how Ace, JJ, CBD and the others cope with the constant vomitus of politics. I suppose they have better coping skills.

Is Cinnabon mostly in malls, or do they have standalone stores?

as I recall from the novel "No Country for Old Men," which may differ from the movie, it is stated that things began to go wrong in the US culminating with the senseless serial killings so lovingly detailed in the novel, when women began to live independently of men, no longer subservient to husband & family; when "feminists" appeared in our midst.

when I reached that part of the novel I probably dropped the book in shock, then picked it up again & gamely continued to the end.

feminists certainly need to have a sense of humor & it's better to laugh than to cry.

The tragedies are -- in my experience and opinion -- easier reading than the comedies. The comedies are full of wordplay, but they depend on words that have changed meaning or gone obsolete in the centuries since. And TV sitcoms have used the same kinds of comic situations, mistaken identities and misunderstandings, for decades.

The histories, well, I guess it helps if you are familiar with the actual history. (Richard III is a good read.)

Appears a whole lot similar to an OPEC for memory. Here we have the usual claim "PEAK OIL MEMORY", and the common refrain in modern construction: "It will take decades to add capacity".

Then the blame: "Gas hogs on the road AI Vendors are using all of the supply"

Then the illogical Supply & Demand response: "the market will later crash". which is the lame excuse to strangle supply until....

The usual government action to grift and regulate an emerging market that is making piles of money.

151 142 Don't really pay any attention to Tim Pool, but I saw a clip on X where he's fed up with all the bullshit that's been going on and calls Candace a "deranged cunt". He's crude, but not wrong.

156 Right now, we only have one person representing this country's majority in DC. And that's Donald Trump. The rest are greasy tongued grifters looking only for more money and self-aggrandizement.

I agree.

The problem I have is with Trump's sounding off and the useless bloviation from everyone in his circle. Don't say Ilhan should be investigated and deported for immigration fraud, DO IT! Don't say Mark Kelly might be recalled to active duty and face a military court, DO IT! Don't say the Clintons are in violation of a subpoena and should be arrested, DO IT!

Stop 'threatening' and 'blasting' and 'firing back' and actually put these treasonous bastards behind bars, or admit that you just exist to provide kayfabe soundbites.

160 Thanks for the comments guys,

>I'm still on an AM4 platform, Ryzen 5900X, with DDR4 on this PC.

I'm on AMD FX 6300 - 8GB DDR3 ram - Radeon R7 260X (as I said, 10 years old)

I think a bump to a Ryzen 7 with DDR 4 would be noticeable for me too.

I only play older games but do some Java programming so I can make use of the additional power.

Is the DDR5 price spike expected to last?

Trump likes to fire several warning shots hoping bluster will get attention.

Omar, especially, needs to be investigated.
Not for marrying her brother which is probably past the statute of limitations, but for the obvious corruption going on around her and her district and the fact that her net work went from 6 to multiple seven figures in the space of two years.

She's a con-artist crook, along with her entire family, and I've been saying that since 2017.

163 OK looked up that mark dice video. His big point that I think is spot on is that - some nobody worker in some nowhere town has a brief and stupid argument with some nobody customers - and that's become national "news"?
This obsession with "magic words" that everyone is supposed to gasp about has gone beyond ridiculous.

They are predicting the shortage will last for at least a year or two, maybe more unless the AI bubble pops.

DDR4 ain't getting any cheaper either, since a lot of people are thinking the same thing you are and buying up the supply which is small anyhow because DDR4 is almost at end-of-life production.

Trump's always had a good bit of PT Barnum in him. That's why we've long said to take Trump seriously, but don't take him literally. He throws out a lot of stream of consciousness stuff that he's never actually thought through.

Razer makes some decent products (I've got a webcam from them that's pretty nice). They are known for being a little over-priced, but they're a big & popular name brand in gaming, so people will pay.

There are lots of those smartphone game controllers out there though, especially on Amazon, if you want to save a few bucks.
$99 doesn't sound ridiculous for a high-quality device like that.

I can't give you an appraisal of any as I don't game on my phone.
