Love at 20,000 feet.

We all tend to pursue the unavailable.

Waking up with a strange bedpartner.

Cat IT.

This cat exemplifies the phenomenon of "fur children."

Kids today, they just learn from the TV.

Jealous dog.

Dog wants more shiatsu massage.

A dog sled in bizzaro world.

Thwarting a chaos agent.

More fun than popping bubble wrap.

Must... destroy... Christmas...

Kosmodrome blew up on the last launch and the Russians are wondering what to do about it. The only working orbital programs now are SpaceX and the Chinese, and the Chinese use non-standard docking equipment and apparently are unwilling to share the dimensions and specs with SpaceX. This could be a problem as the Chinese astronauts may not have a functioning return craft right now.

I saw that. Sergei didn't secure something and it got blasted in the flame trench. Did Sergei have too much vodka or not enough, I wonder.

There's going to be a problem with keeping the ISS boosted due to drag. The Soyuz does that. They can use some of their own thrusters on one of the modules, but that takes fuel, which has to come from a Soyuz. Also something about attitude control, and de-saturating the momentum gyros or something.

82 From a NY Times article:
Russia’s Soyuz rockets and capsules have proven highly reliable for more than half a century. But they rely on antiquated technologies and procedures. The service platform, which rolls from its position beneath the rocket into the shelter about an hour before launch, may have been dislodged because someone forgot to put in a stopper to prevent it from rolling back out.

“They were supposed to have brakes on those rails,” Mr. Zak said. Technicians install those brakes manually, Mr. Zak said, a step that has been routinely performed for more than 1,600 Soyuz launches. It is also possible that a mechanical failure caused the mishap, he said.

My dogs aren't well trained enough. I recognize that and would never consider taking them where they would annoy/slobber upon/hump strangers or other dogs or merchandise.

Unfortunately, lots of people also have dogs who aren't well trained, but they think their precious can accompany them everywhere all the same.

_________________________________

Believe it or not, back in the day I did a Christmas song, but no one would play it. In the flavor of a Dickens style Christmas, I kidnapped nearly 60 orphans and lined them up in stocks in my basement. I then hit them in the kneecaps with a wooden mallet so they would scream. Each had a distinctive call of distress. It took a while, but I placed them to create a three octave scale. But, I have to tell you, it wasn't perfect. No matter how hard I tried, I never found a C-sharp. So, I had to alter the music little.

The Radio stations refused to play it. Which is horse manure since they used to play that dog barking Jingle Bells nonsense all the time. Anyone can do that.

Oh, wait, you meant the song itself. I thought you were asked what was the worst Christmas song referring to the performers.

Never mind.

In an SF story of mine, I have a close-knit Finnish family traveling out to the stars in the 2900s. They celebrate Christmas in Finnish style, but they love the ancient "carols" such as one by "a singer whose name was also a word in English, 'Carpenter.' "

Originally I had them listening to "Merry Christmas, Darling." But it didn't fit the worshipful tone of the scene; so I quoted the verse from DYHWIH about the shepherd boy telling the king of the Child shivering in the cold.

I'll look, Anna. I'm thinking of expanding the short story into a novel. There is plenty of space for adventure and for exploring a culture many Westerners think is "Scandinavian," if they think about it at all.

190 So, what is the worst Christmas song?
~~~~~
Sleighride. I know, it's not a Christmas song, and that's the point.
When Christmas was being turned into "winter holiday" so as not to offend anyone, overt Christmas carols disappeared, and instead the "Holiday Concert" had to find blander fare.
"Sleighride" was perfect. Instrumental, everyone vaguely knew it, and so we played it every year. Tortured it to death. It's a shitty piece of music to play, especially on French Horn, which is all upbeats. I switched to Tuba my senior year and got to play the downbeats.
The family knows: Don't play that tune, or Dad will not shut up about it.
This was late in their less-SF-oriented third season, where the cast and crew were pretty sure they'd be canceled soon and were going through the motions. Never less than professional about it, but not with the enthusiasm of the first two years.
Plus, the story for this ep was done by Roddenberry himself. GR was not that good a writer. He was a good idea man, a solid producer, and a great rewrite guy. But a lot of his episodes, even those for Have Gun -- Will Travel, are missing something, and I've never been able to pin it down.
The best original Treks, and some of the best concepts like the Klingons, were from his line producer, Gene L. Coon.
The one with Lincoln and Surak? Oh, yes. The second pilot, "Where No Man Has Gone Before" is very strong on suspense and action, though.
It was the second pilot -- NBC had ordered it after they liked the first one with Jeffrey Hunter, but thought it was too cerebral for TV in 1964. When the show premiered, they ran "Where No Man" third, and it must have confused viewers that the uniforms and set designs were different from the first two. But it was a *good* story.
The classic technique of a clip show to save money. In ST's case, they were falling behind because the special effects -- cutting edge for those days -- were coming in later and later from the optical shop, and the show was getting close to missing air dates. In the bad old days, shows would be tweaked to try to find the right formula, and continuity errors were common. By the time they hit their stride, the vast majority of the audience had never seen the early episodes (how would they?) so no one really noticed.
Being able to buy them on DVD has opened some eyes. I loved "Happy Days," a mainstay of our TV watching, and of course everyone tried to be as cool as The Fonz.
In the early days of the internet there were forums where fights were common, and I was amused by one that claimed Babylon 5 was superior to Star Trek based on the crossover actors.
Walter Koenig in Trek did a bad Russian accent and was supposed to get the girls into it, but in B5 he was a sardonic evil genius.
Majel Barrett in Trek couldn't get Spock to make time even when he was in a mating frenzy, but in B5 was a seeress whose every utterance was written down.
Did TV shows, at least dramatic ones, do that in the Sixties? The Fugitive had one early on, where we found out more about the night Kimble found his wife murdered. But it wasn't a clip show -- new footage was shot amplifying what had been in the pilot. I don't think U.N.C.L.E., for example, ever did a recap or clip show. In fact it used flashbacks very little.
Indeed they were. And Elinor had a pretty long career -- that show, a stint on Andy of Mayberry, a guest role on Trek, and I think at one point she was Felix's girlfriend on the Odd Couple in the '70s. Not sure about that last.
NO MA'AM: National Organization of Men Against Amazonian Masterhood
To me, the funniest episode was a late one in which Kelly is about to star in a production of "Phantom of the Opera" at the Larry Storch School of Acting, and Al has to dress as a wolf for a "moonlight" sale at the shoe store. He realizes it's not going to work. "Nobody is going to buy shoes from us. We're wolves!"
Larry is knocked out, and Al has to go on stage as the Phantom to support Kelly. He doesn't know the lines, so he mutters, "I'll just sit here and play with my organ --!"
And she lived in ...ELSINORE (Helsingør) ! And Dench's first role was ..Ophelia ! Wild, no. That lady lived there same time when Shakespeare was writing. And here is another, that castle was visited by the troupe from the Globe theater!
My relative with a boat in your marina is getting some level of captain's license, not sure which. Will ask her at Christmas - actually weather permitting (ha!) we'll start that day with a short sail off DP.
Do you do the Christmas light thing on the boat? Need to check - there are two boat light parades down here, one in the harbor, one in Mission Bay. They can be amusing.
drupe /droo͞p/
A fruit consisting of pulpy, coriaceous, or fibrous exocarp, without valves, containing a nut or stone with a kernel. The exocarp is succulent in the plum, cherry, apricot, peach, etc.; dry and subcoriaceous in the almond; and fibrous in the cocoanut. A stone fruit.
pome /pōm/
noun
1. A fleshy fruit, such as an apple, pear, or quince, having several seed chambers and an outer fleshy part largely derived from the hypanthium.
2. A fruit composed of several cartilaginous or bony carpels inclosed in an adherent fleshy mass, which is partly receptacle and partly calyx, as an apple, quince, or pear.
3. A ball of silver or other metal, which is filled with hot water, and used by the priest in cold weather to warm his hands during the service.
