The Morning Rant

It's so easy to blame the Democrat machine for this ridiculous outcome, but the reality is that it is the feckless, spineless, gutless, traitorous Republican leadership in the United States Senate that is holding up confirmations.

The Democrats are doing what they always do...use every means at their disposal (fair or foul) and vote as a bloc to deny even obviously qualified and competent nominees to be confirmed. Yes, the Republicans will occasionally use some of the same maneuvers, but in general, as we can see by the flood of hard-left lunatic judges on the federal bench, that it is the Democrat Party that always uses whatever power is available to it.

President Trump had tapped Habba, who previously served as his personal attorney and later a White House advisor, for the role in an acting capacity in March.
Trump blamed the Senate tradition of blue slips for Habba’s inability to be confirmed to a permanent post, given the power of home state senators — in this case, New Jersey — to object to nominees before the Judiciary Committee. He urged Judiciary Committee Chairman Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) to no longer honor the practice.
“It’s a very sad situation. We’re losing … a lot of great people,” Trump said of Democrats’ objections. “We have about seven US attorneys who are not going to be able to keep their jobs much longer because of the blue slip.”

Oh yes! The "Blue Slip!" Is it a law? No.

It is tradition, nothing more. You know, the same tradition that allows congressmen to pull fire alarms, and suggest that violence against ICE personnel is appropriate, and molest congressional pages, and enrich themselves with insider trading, and allow pimps to operate out of their homes, and to sexually harass at will, and molest and rape and who knows what else...all without penalty.

President Trump needs to make this a priority, and push the Senate to ignore the blue slips and go full steam ahead with every single one of his nominations for every position available. Thom Tillis, the consummate GOPe apparatchik, supports this tradition, and has considerable clout. Until the Senate is cleansed of him and others like him (backstabbing corporate shills), this will be a constant issue. To avoid the blue slip in committee, the Senate requires a "discharge petition," whatever that is, and that is a 60 vote hurdle that will never happen.

This is a constant reminder that it isn't just a majority that is important in the Senate...getting rid of pathetic RINO senators is far more important than simply electing any Republican without a live boy or a dead girl in the back seat. That's how we get Tillis and Collins and Cornyn and Murkowski and....

Tillis is gone soon. Collins actually just votes with us almost all the time, just making lots of noises for her shitty constituents in Maine. Cornyn will most likely lose the primary.

Murkowski is a cheat and should be cast out to sea.

Anyway, I suspect that blue slip policy won't die because Republicans don't want a future Democrat senator to ignore them completely. Senators have eroded their own power down to little more than appointment oversight. Getting rid of that is making them completely irrelevant in government instead of mostly irrelevant.

I'm...doubtful.

Governors tend to do poorly in senate races when the parties don't match up to overall partisan makeup of the state. Think Hogan last year in MD.

Republicans have 110,000 more active voters in NC than Democrats. Overall, I think the GOP is almost a majority now, first time ever (it's down to 1,800 Democrat majority when last week the GOP got 1,200 more net).

And, Cooper's probably going to have trouble raising money in line with people like Crockett and Planter in ME scooping up all the major dollars.

I wouldn't call it an easy win for Whatley. NC is probably Dem's best chance for a pickup. But, it's more of an uphill climb for Cooper than I think people want to admit.

Demand for silver for industrial purposes has been declining for years (digital photography killed its largest use which was photographic film).

Gold is getting pressured a bit apparently from the rumor that Russia is having to liquidate some of its reserves in gold on the intl market.

Neither are markets for the faint hearted or those not willing to take losses.

Personally, I think, watch the copper markets as that has substantial industrial demand across the globe with constrained supply at the moment.

I find them increasingly irrelevant and if you want to study elections, I suggest going to different measures--employment, inflation, per capita income, normal vote in districts, etc. Media, polls are now a ordinal measure instead of interval.

Eg.
At best we get, Trump up (by how much we don't know but probably more than we want to admit), Trump is down (by how little we don't want to admit so we make more than it probably is.). That is about the only use for media polls nowadays.

Seems to be the opposite with Russia as it is reportedly selling gold in order to meet its forex needs. China and Indian citizens hoard gold as a shield against uncertain future. And the gold standard itself was rife with all kinds of disruptions economically--panics were actually depressions and often based on a nation's frantic need to shore up its reserves from trade imbalances.

It ain't a panacea and the problem that gold supplies do not grow with economies but are on a separate track based on availability of mines makes it worse. Often you got severe deflation out of it which benefitted lenders but not the more numerous borrowers.

Last night, saw "Rio Bravo" again after several years.

Just a great, very entertaining movie. Pure fun to watch.

After seeing Hawk's movie kinda clumped together time wise, it looks like his greatest gift was to create a friendly, chummy, relaxed set that allowed the actors to more or less have fun and be more of themselves in their roles.

And then translate that mood to the audience.

He...might have. Credited director, Christian Nyby, never directed anything like it again, and it feels much more like a Hawks film. Hawks did produce it, and he was recorded as being on set a lot.

I lean more towards, Nyby asked a lot of questions and Hawks gave a lot of answers.

If I had to base a currency, it would be on energy as energy production is key to a nation's wealth. And harder to devalue something like a kwh or BTU.

Not sure what you mean but in definitional terms a fiat currency is in effect backed only by a government making it the legal currency to pay debts.

Gold or silver backed currency as the US used it issued paper that theoretically could call on US gold reserves payable upon demand for a quantity of gold or silver at a given state set price. Actual exchanges of gold and/or silver en masse for large debts became rapidly impractical as the sums increased so you exchanged paper over it.

There's a marked difference in the number and quality of candidates for jobs in my sector (instructional design) just in the last 6-9 months. Back then, there were a ton of international applicants looking for an academic job to get their foot in the door. Now, there's hardly any. Lots of Americans applying for the job, though.

Our system is based on debt, and the value of the debt is based on both the likelihood of repayment and the likelihood that inflation will make repayment meaningless.
Inflation is driven by the expansion of the money supply, which in our system is driven by availability of credit AND the interest rate making it less or more advantageous to take loans.

SO, Treasuries are the base of availability (outside of investments and savings), and the interest rate moderates the willingness for taking out loans, and then there are terms outside of the interest that the banks use to close up availability.
