My 9070 XT arrived on Tuesday.
I can't really complain about them raising prices because I've already paid $10 more than the new suggested MSRP of $619. The article says AMD will probably raise prices again in January so I guess it'll go up to $629 by then. But AIB partners will certainly add another 10% to their pwn prices so you'll probably be paying $639 for the cheapest model by February. 175 Once upon a time I read Marie Kondo's book about tidying up and organizing. (Note to self: this is NOT the Book Thread.)
In it she states that Everyone Hoards Something. I was skeptical at first. Then later I opened a bath vanity drawer packed full of little hotel soaps and shampoo bottles collected from years of work related travel. Oh... Probably. It comes, in part, from people - theoretically - learning proper principles of software engineering while in school only to be told, "Fuck that shit, just make it work," once they get to their jobs. People who collect a room full of old manual typewriter ribbons might be strange, but they aren’t really hoarding, depriving everyone else of a needed food or commodity. The people who were building Ft. Charmin in their living room during the government lockdowns made things really difficult for some.

also:
USAGE The words hoard and horde have some similarities in meaning and are pronounced the same, so it is unsurprising that they are sometimes confused. A hoard is ‘a secret stock or store of something,’ as in ‘a hoard of treasure’, while a horde is a disparaging word for ‘a large group of people,’ as in ‘hordes of fans descended on the stage’. Instances of hoard being used instead of horde are not uncommon: around a quarter of citations for hoard in the Oxford English Corpus are for the incorrect use Posted by: m at December 05, 2025 07:03 AM (RuTUS) 221

I must have ten old boxes for electronics.
I tend to keep the boxes when they're new because you never know if you'll have to send it back to get it repaired or replaced. I learned that lesson the hard way when I had to send back a Samsung flat screen and didn't have the box. UPS made an extra $60 off of me just packing the thing up and sending it back. Now I've got a room with about 10 boxes and two or three TV boxes in the attic. Posted by: SpeakingOf at December 05, 2025 07:09 AM (6ydKt) 227
Pearl Harbor was 7 Dec ‘41, by February the government had already started major rationing of virtually everything and forbade production of consumer items altogether. The government can move fairly quickly when it has to.
Many people weren’t unaware of where things were going and had stockpiled car tires in anticipation. Rubber plantations in Malaya had been cutoff. Government said nope, five (5) tires is all you can have. $10,000 fine, etc. Posted by: Common Tater at December 05, 2025 07:11 AM (bNzW0) 228

FTFY. When the open source movement first got started, I noted that absent a profit motive the whole thing was neither sustainable nor likely to produce quality over the long term, and I think I've been proven right. It did take longer than I thought, but the fact that it turns out large swathes of the open source ecosystem were being funded by USAid black budget money kind of explains that.
