Didn't have electricity or indoor plumbing til I was 10, in 73. Didn't feel poor at all.

When I grew up, real lights were colored. They required work to maintain and clip to tree (they were heavier)
The white lights came when the cheap LED came out. Because they were cheap people could buy and use more, and they looked "elegant" but they were a convenience and not a luxury. Ace may see them as "upper class," but they were for people who didn't want to spend the time and effort, so they were fake and cheap. You could wrap them around a tree in minutes without clipping. While mother was in the assisted living center and not ambulatory, she was wanting those four foot high bogus trees that adorned the front porch of her former home. Had all the lights and a timer built-in, but the cats pissed them all up and there was no way I was going to store them or bring them in. Off to Wallymart where in the Trailer Trash section of the store, were these light fiber really bogus looking three foot tall "trees" that were constantly changing in colors in the hundreds of strands. Absolutely hideous and a mockery of Christmas decorations - so I bought three of them. Day 1: "Are you kidding?" Day 3: The cares love them - I love them too. Jan 2nd: She gives them to the cares. My Dad, though, loved blue and green. He had strings of the old timey bulbs, and took the time to make sure they were blue, green, etc. Mom had a ton of very old ornaments, many of them works of art. Not sure who get those now that she has passed away. We always got a real tree. Dad was like Clark Griswold without the malignant narcissism. Back in the day we had those large multi colored lights that had bulbs you could replace. Yard was 200' wide and I'd light up from one end to the other. Gate on driveway got some detail and of course the house had a lot of lights. Again the big decision is whether to put up the small Lionel O scale layout around the tree (locomotive and a few cars repaired 10 years ago, transformer original still working). Mostly do it if we're going to have guests but recent years ends up we don't have many guests during "the season". So indolence has a strong argument to pass on it.

I've owned my 07 Caravan for 14 years. It was owned by a family with small children first. I still vacuum glitter out of carpet and upholstery, when cleaning it up.

I didn't mind the Biden-era Christmas at the White House. The Nutcracker tap-dancers were better than seeing Mrs. Doctor toddling around in fishnet stockings and a dress made out of Christmas-themed upholstery.
I really enjoyed when HGTV or the like used to do "Christmas at the White House" but I'm not sure they still do it. Even Mrs. Obama was relaxed and charming, especially the last one when her little nephew joined her and was sooo excited about the team of horses bringing the tree. Today certainly ought to be remembered as a day of video cruelty by Ace. First the Juguaren't abomination, and now this throwback to "Doctor" Jill's questionable tastes in entertainment. And to think the good "Doctor" was all agog at being able to surpass whatever in hell Paris did for their Summer Olympics shows. One can only imagine the visual and audio horrors that we dodged. There was a video during late Biden Junta years with people of indeterminate sex, dancing or zooming through the White House which was startling and disturbing.

376. Jackstraw-
Same here. One Christmas Eve / Christmas morning my Dad was up to 0400 assembling a toy washer and dryer set for one of my sisters. He took a long nap at my grandparents that Christmas afternoon. Posted by: Dad of Six at December 04, 2025 05:41 PM (+OGAU) 401

My husband and I did it when our kids were little. It was magic. I will never forget how exciting it was to come downstairs on Christmas morning and see everything. Posted by: JackStraw at December 04, 2025 05:42 PM (viF8m) 403
I now have to put up our lights.
Might just toss the strings up on the roof and call it good. To be honest... our first Christmas here was... bleak. A strand of green lights on the stoop and my wife's grape vine deer with a red nose. Sad Posted by: Martini Farmer at December 04, 2025 05:42 PM (NwnyJ) 404
Did no one ever tell the Bidens that having colored folk do the ol' soft-shoe to entertain massa went out of fashion along with minstrel shows, and is now considered RAYCISS?

Please, I beg you people to never send a holiday/birthday/made up crap greeting card with f*cking sparkes on them. Sparkles/glitter is the Devil's ejaculation.
Posted by: Maj. Healey at December 04, 2025 05:32 PM (abIsI) Got some of the gift label stickers with glitter on them one year. I advise everybody not to do that unless you want to still see glitter in the carpet out of the corner of your eye as you walk by in February. I remember my mom getting her vaccuum brush bar clogged with tinsel and I'd have to take it off, and cut it all off with a steak knife, reassemble it and 3 minutes later have to do it all over again.
