"The bug," he wrote, "was implemented in a way that, very obviously to nearly anyone at first glance, uses 100 percent CPU all the time, and will run forever unless the task happens to check the time during the correct second."
A fix for the bug was proposed by a user.

The fix was correct.

The fix was ignored, and the comment thread was closed by AI.
Windows 11 is barely ahead of Windows 10 in install base, despite Microsoft stabbing Windows 10 in the back, the front, the sides, and from several other directions. (The Register)

31 I can't disagree with the IBM CEO on the numbers for buulding out AI data centers, becuae he's making a lot of sense there.

I just can't help but wonder if he's actually talking his book, and IBM is waiting on quantum computing to be the next boom, which I'm positive will cost a lot more than AI since the tech is so new and extremely expensive to build, run and maintain.

Quantum is definitely the next tech boom waiting in the wings.

Probably not. Quantum computing is a different way of computing data but that doesn't invalidate the value of the data itself. There's a lot of hand-wavy promises about quantum but it's not likely, ever, to become something widely used due the difficulty in shielding the qubits. If 'perfected', it'll be useful for government and big labs.

Quantum may replace classic computing eventually, but probably not in most of our lifetimes.

Quantum computers have to be kept at well below zero temps to work correctly. The most recent advances have worked with operating temps around 1 kelvin (-458 F). So it requires some pretty heavy duty equipment to get the temps that low.

Most Quantum will be done via the cloud/data centers until they can figure out how to run them at near room temperature so everybody will be able to run them anywhere.

Quantum is the most overhyped tech right now. It can never replace classical computing. Even once it's perfected, it will only give exponential speedup for a very narrow range of problems.

It will break a whole bunch of cryptography though, so there is that.

I'd agree with you just on the technical hurdles involved, but the ingenuity of humanity never ceases to amaze me.

These small reactors they're making today are not pressurized water and, theoretically, don't require a team of highly trained people to run them and keep them - theoretically - safe.

The technology CBD linked in the sidebar has, apparently, been in operation in Japan for a while with good success and safety but it seems to be most useful for industrial applications which require enormous amounts of heat... foundries and the like. I haven't read much about using them for mass electricity generation.

Heat transfers out from a secondary loop and is used for industrial processes like refineries and chemical cracking. Dow wants one in Texas to save a lot of CO2 emissions in their chemical plants. It is a good solution.

I think the reactor vessel is inherently safe because the design keeps out of parameters high temps from being possible.
