Raccoon gets drunk at Virginia ABC store, passes out in bathroom

An officer from Hanover County Animal Protection and Shelter responded to the store Saturday morning for a report of an unusual break-in. When Officer Martin arrived, she found shelves ransacked and bottles broken on the ground.
The “suspect” was discovered passed out on the floor of the bathroom, and was identified as an intoxicated raccoon, according to the shelter.

Florida man dies from choking on live cockroaches in sick eating contest

A man died after choking during a competitive eating contest where he consumed numerous live cockroaches, with a python as the grand prize.
Edward Archbold, 32, from West Palm Beach, Florida, suffered fatal asphyxiation when cockroach fragments obstructed his airway during the 2012 competition.
He fell unconscious and started vomiting moments after taking part in the "Midnight Madness" marketing event at the Ben Siegel Reptile Store in Deerfield Beach, Florida, reports Mirror UK.

Multiple news stories have recently been posted about this, even though it happened in 2012. Not sure why this is news now, but here we are!

Researchers from Mass General Brigham conducted a new study examining whether five widely followed diets could help prevent chronic constipation in middle- and older-age adults. The team monitored more than 96,000 participants for several years to see how long-term eating habits influenced the likelihood of developing this persistent gastrointestinal issue. Their analysis showed that people who routinely ate a Mediterranean or plant-based diet experienced a lower incidence of constipation.

Cape Cod estate near Kennedy compound lists for $21.5M

The iconic white mansion overlooking Hyannis Harbor, visible to ferry riders traveling to the islands and located next to the Kennedy Compound, has hit the market with a $21.5 million price tag — the highest active listing on Cape Cod.
The 13-bedroom, 12-bath estate on 3 acres includes a main house and a guesthouse at 151 and 155 Irving Ave., with a private beach and landscaping designed by the Olmsted Brothers.
From the water, passersby often mistake the property built in 1914 for the nearby Kennedy Compound, which sits just up the street. Historic photos show the Kennedys sailing in front of the house, and even Jackie Kennedy waterskiing nearby.

I helped a relative dry out from barbiturate overuse once (some nasty/comical hallucinations involved) but I read up on the process to make I wouldn’t advise anything that would risk their health. I was surprised to learn that drying out from alcohol is far more dangerous than most other addictive chemicals.

Read about the Methodist minister announcing his trans-formation from the pulpit. Wearing a rainbow cape thing with his robes.

Then a photo of his new look in full pancake make-up. Sad clowns are now cherished. Pitiful looking man and fake woman. He said it is not about sex (which I don't think about with the creatures anyway). I hope he goes through with the surgery and enjoys the process before the horror sets in. He should be scorned and ridiculed and run out of town with his feather boa and brooch collections.

And I live 10 miles from one of the biggest silver deposits ever found. The Comstock. In the tailings still up there is about half as much as they extracted. Now it is all a National Monument so it can't be touched. There is a failrly decent copper deposit about 30 miles from me. They've been trying to get that going for years. Nevada has a ton of mineral wealth we just can't do anything with it. Plus lawsuits and all that enviro-mental crap stalling tactics. Cost a fortune to sink one shovel in the ground.

210 I was stationed near the Cotswolds. A bit east but similar weather. Cold, damp, not much snow but frost so thick you could ski on it. Cold rain, mostly. Black ice and freezing fog kind of sucked too. Also, not a whole lot of daylight. Night time lasted a while. It didn't bother me but I drank a lot. Ellen is a wimp.

The problem with silver bullets is that they are not very malleable, which means they won't conform to the rifling of a barrel, so won't get the stability that comes from the spin that rifling produces. Thus, it doesn't matter what type of armament you are carrying, it becomes a musket. You cannot depend on the weapon being accurate at distance, so adjust your tactics accordingly.

The Lone Ranger to the contrary notwithstanding, silver bullets are difficult tho make. High melting temperature of silver makes conventional lead-bullet molds unusable.

Beads of silver shot loaded into a shotgun shell would be quite feasible. I would guess about 3/4 ounce of silver shot would fit in a 12 gauge shell, and should be effective at across-the-room range.

Pre-65 coinage is at around 90% silver, and the weights are (new) at 0.86 troy ounce, or about one ounce Avoirdupois (16 ounces to the pound instead of Troy at 12 ounces to the pound)
Silver and gold are quoted at Troy.

Pre 1982 pennies are 95% copper.

As coins are handled, they wear down and can weigh less

279 You can boil coins of any denomination in nitric and nobody will be the wiser - problem is, you barely make anything from refining them vs. selling them on the junk market. The quantity is a given and they're priced accordingly.

282 The problem with silver bullets is that they are not very malleable, which means they won't conform to the rifling of a barrel, so won't get the stability that comes from the spin that rifling produces. Thus, it doesn't matter what type of armament you are carrying, it becomes a musket. You cannot depend on the weapon being accurate at distance, so adjust your tactics accordingly.

Some day I'll make time when in the SF area (boy that's been an eternity) to drop by the national cemetery in South SF where Nimitz is buried (alongside Spruance, Lockwood, and Turner, I think). And of course stop by the See's factory just down the street.

Nightwatch in Cypress (hometown of Tiger Woods) there is a cemetery where Joe Rochefort, the code-breaking hero of Midway, is buried. Gonna stop by there next time I head north for ramen, booze, or ethnic eats (or en route somewhere beyond).

Beads of silver shot loaded into a shotgun shell would be quite feasible. I would guess about 3/4 ounce of silver shot would fit in a 12 gauge shell, and should be effective at across-the-room range.

A combination of hubris and greed; the south Nashville bubble went 78-22 for Behn and it is one of the fastest growing areas in the state as it has places to live for gen z. The outlying counties, even with the Williamson bulwark, are not going to be enough votes if more people of the same persuasion continue to pack into south nashville, and it's a chic place to live now that all the moderately wealthy lib kids have chased out the former residents. It's going to be a problem in 10 years, if not sooner.

The buddy of mine who cast silver ounces into bullets said they tried a few shots to see how they worked, and he found they didn't shoot well, they all went wild because they would engrave on the rifling, or stripped over it.

FWIW, he said they had to heat the molds pretty hot on a hot plate before casting to get the silver to flow right and cast cleanly

In the Monster Hunter International books the hunters use sintered silver and lead, or a polymer and silver mix for their werewolf rounds.

Unsure if I should document the choke laugh, but told my husband if anything comes of it to note the time.

I read an article in a gun magazine years ago. Author wanted to make silver bullets, and immediately destroyed a steel mold trying to pour them. I don't remember how he finally made them. Lost wax casting, like jewellers use, or maybe he turned them on a lathe?

Galena is lead sulfide, PbS2. It is crystalline (cubic), and quite brittle. Crumbly, even. There is argentiferous galena, with silver substituting for some of the lead.

Pure silver is soft. Not as soft as lead, but softer than copper, and copper will deform into the rifling of a gun barrel just fine.

Be curious when all is done with turnout by county. Behn over performed due to millions of Dem bucks spent is my guess while GOP turnout was enough to win.

Turnout was about the same as former incumbent Green's 2022 race of 180k. Difference is that Behn spent her money pooling early votes and Van Epps did not have the 5 PCT or so bump from incumbency that is usual. Behn is hinting at a rematch in 2026 but she probably won't get the money she blew to get close in this race. Probably outspent Van Epps close to 2:1 counting dark money.

There is a whole host of complex minerals that are multiple sulfides or sulfosalts of lead, silver, arsenic, antimony, and other metals. Among them are ruby silvers, which have a sparkly metallic luster, but present a pinkish cast due to powdered material on the surface. These metallic minerals are in fact somewhat transparent, and look like ruby-red gems under the reflecting-light microscope. I have samples.

Did you hear about a newer way of recycling rare-earth metals from scrapped electronics? The claim is that flash heating the scrap in a chlorine atmosphere will separate out the various fractions of materials depending on the temperature used. The group that did the research thinks it will be cheaper to process scrap than mine the ore.

You got me curious. I tried a dime in a modern plastic shotcup wad, and it was just a little too wide to properly fit. I cut the crimp off a 12 gauge hull and it fit with plenty of room. A fellow could easily use an over-powder wad and a roll crimp to make rounds suitable for hunting werewolves, preferably in London.

Way cost prohibitive to extract it though. But when you think, we did between 700,000 and 1,000,000 pounds a month, we sent a shiton on gold and silver though there too.

Also you always wound up with excess spare coins if you travelled abroad, so I would keep them as curios too. I wound up with some Queen Elizabeth Hong Kong dollars from my trip there.

Full wadcutters have difficulty feeding in semi autos. Smith made acl special target shooting model for 38 spc wadcutters but I haven't seen such recently outside of custom one off jobs.

389 210 I was stationed near the Cotswolds. A bit east but similar weather. Cold, damp, not much snow but frost so thick you could ski on it. Cold rain, mostly. I'm going to call B$ on this one.

The UK - until this year - had what is known as non-domiciled (non-dom) tax regime. Basically, if you're a US citizen living in the UK, you only had to pay tax on UK-derived income. In the US, by contrast, you paid tax no matter where it was derived in the world. So, Ellen and Portia would pay no UK tax but pay full US tax. Now, however, the non-dom scheme is going away, and all UK residents will now pay tax from wherever the income comes from, just like the US.

Basically, Ellen's leaving because she'll now get tax twice on all her global income - once from the UK and again from the US.

I expect Professor Galloway - who made a big deal out of being a non-dom last year - to quietly make the move back to the US as well.

Aha! The Rice U. team was recovering rare earths from scrap rare earth magnets, not from bulk "e-waste". So you would have to disassemble the electric motors, etc. where the magnets are used.

And "flash joule heating" is basically vaporize the sample by passing a huge jolt of current through it.

That is because of those Coin counting machines in Super Markets. They test every coin while counting it - the silver coins go into a different channel than the modern ones - since the silver coins are so much more valuable than clad crap coins.
