18 Our Malinois, Breccia, one day followed me up a tall ladder to the roof. I was up there getting ready to do something. As I'm on the edge looking down she just appears next to me, looking pretty satisfied with herself.

She scampered back down the ladder like she did it routinely. She would also climb an 8 ft wooden fence and I had to bury and wire cinder blocks to the bottom of the fence because she would dig a 2 ft hole under the fence and escape.

37 Malinois are cool dogs, but I wouldn't have one unless I were retired and had pretty much nothing else to do except work with the dog. My GSD probably should've had a lot more training, but he's adapted to being a house dog. It helps that he's over 9 years old at this point.

The busybody neighbor across the street called Grandma to tell her there was a dog on the roof. Grandma didn't believe her. Dad was up there fixing something, and Sitko just appeared. So, he let Sitko back into the house through a dormer window and went back to work. Sure enough, the lady calls again, and Grandma goes outside to look. Sitko is sitting on the edge of the roof, proud as a peacock.

The best Texas style BBQ I ever had was in ... California. About 30 to 40 minutes from DLI. Place was a hole in the wall run by a Texas expat (long haired Vietnam vet). There was always a line (half hour wait minimum), and no one was complaining. That was 30 years ago. Probably long gone. Best BBQ I ever had in my life.

At the risk of being a traitor to my homeland, I actually prefer the Carolina style BBQ to Texas BBQ, except the that place near DLI, which was a kind of BBQ Nirvana. I've made my peace with having climbed the mountain never to return.

I think BBQ comes down to the sauce, vinegar or tomato based. I prefer the tomato variety.

Always stunned at how large those things get.

I once drove (speeding @ 85+ MPH as I was running late for a meeting) overnight from Bangor, Maine to Halifax, Nova Scotia -- and was terrified that I'd hit a moose and it would go right through the windshield.

I subsequently learned that there was chain-linked fence on either side of the highways and they'd built wildlife-crossings underneath the roads to prevent such accidents.

Even here in Northern AZ, every now and again (around Flagstaff) a car will hit one or more elk -- usually at night -- at a high rate of speed, causing one or more human fatalities.

Hiked Mt. Humphries (the highest peak in Flagstaff) five years ago; started at the Snow Bowl (ski resort parking) lot @ 9500 ft and climbed another steep 3000 ft to 12,500 (with like three psychologically-painful "false peaks" (you think it's the summit, but ... (Psych!").

Only time I ever got altitude sickness (virtually every joint in my body was cramping and I was getting tunnel vision -- but I swore I'd either summit or die trying). Amazing views: you could see the North Rim of The Grand Canyon.

Haven't made it to Mt. Lemmon yet, but know it has Ski Valley -- the southernmost ski destination in the continental U.S.

I know I've mentioned it before, possibly more than once on the pet thread, but we got Daisy the madcap Malinois without knowing what we were getting.

Some kids came by, going around this rural neighborhood, to see if this dog belonged to anyone. She was found running down the highway, no tags, no chip. I asked to take a look at her, and she ran up and licked me, just one not-too-slurpy lick on the face. ❣️ She was not full grown yet. A vet had identified her as a "part German Shepherd mix."

Since our good ol' last boy died, MiladyJo and I had considered following the advice of Morons about going to the shelter to look for a low-maintenance old dog that we, a couple of well-over-29-year-olds could handle. But we got this active little pup instead. Only after we took her in did our son identify her as a Belgian Malinois. Looking up YooToobs of Malinoises, we realized what we were in for. !!!

She still has a wild streak, and keeps us exercised, but she is so sweet, and also loyal and defensive of her family. And, yes, very smart. A little too smart at times!

The full Moon, being opposite the Sun, does just the opposite. When the Sun is high, the Moon is low, and when the Sun is low near the winter solstice, the Moon is high. And due to the vagaries of the lunar orbit, the Moon can get higher and lower in the sky than the sun can. It's on a higher part of the 18.6 year lunistice cycle now, so the Moon will be a few degrees higher the the summer sun.

Daughter just called. She heard from the father of a friend and cheerily asked, how's Friend? only to find out she'd died last March. Cancer suddenly recurred. Daughter said maybe she should go on Facebook more often.

When she called, MiladyJo was on the phone with an old friend of ours, calling to relate that her son had died. Of booze, I think. Leaving kids behind. Siigh. I remember him as a lively young teen.
