They Really were not into pubic hair back then. Is this a modesty issue, or were women depilated back then?
Posted by: tubal at December 03, 2025 09:35 AM (pDt9x) Women have been depliating since Egyptian times. But you inspired a thought - I was reading a bio of the Everleigh sisters, who owned the most luxurious brothel in Chicago at the turn of the century. Their women were plucked for aesthetic reasons, as the Everleighs knew that they could offer what their customers couldn't get at home - "a clean woman." Is the lack of pubic hair here a subtle suggestion that the ladies here are sisters of the night? Posted by: Mary Poppins' Practically Perfect Piercing (aka Eloquent Depression) at December 03, 2025 09:49 AM (ufSfZ) 86
This is a remarkable painting. Garofalo captures a sense of carnal desire and affection for both the men and women. This is desire, not assault. Their postures are relaxed and natural. The pace seems languid, not rushed. The scene is idyllic. The colors are bright but not garish. It has the conventions of the time with the landscape in the background, sometimes through a window or, in this case, framed by the tree and lovers in the foreground. To my mind, the figures are less wooden, more natural, than is often the case for this period. There is a glowing quality that is lovely.
I don't know what the lizard on the tree trunk is supposed to mean. I would equate this to the Mona Lisa in style and effect. No doubt more knowledgeable people (almost everyone) would disagree. Posted by: JTB at December 03, 2025 09:49 AM (yTvNw) 87

zaftig
American Heritage® Dictionary adjective Having a full, shapely figure. Used of a woman. Merriam-Webster or less commonly zoftig of a woman : having a full rounded figure : pleasingly plump Cambridge Dictionary (of a woman) having large breasts and hips and not thin, but in a way that is attractive : Marilyn Monroe was sometimes called full-figured or zaftig. Zaftig Has Yiddish Origins Zaftig has been in use in English—mainly in the United States—since the 1920s; a couple of the earliest known uses are found in Variety magazine, in reviews of burlesque dancers. The word comes from the Yiddish zaftik, meaning "juicy" or "succulent," which in turn comes from zaft, meaning "juice" or "sap." Posted by: Moron Analyst at December 03, 2025 10:02 AM (R1nej) 137

It's fascinating to see these renaissance artists use of skin color, since it's not about race - the men are well tanned and brownish, showing that they work and are active outdoors. For men, it is a shameful thing to be chalky white.
But for women of the era, an earthy color denotes servile status, and those at the top of the social scale were supposed to be indoors constantly, doing nothing but lounging around and waiting for Men to pay attention to them. Posted by: Tom Servo at December 03, 2025 10:03 AM (uWKK8) 143

couple things .. first off it was a good win. the Ds put a LOT into that special, it was a massive focus for them (their sole focus, really). second the R guy was kinda bland, but that's ok third, Blackburn won her race there by 1 point. so he won by 9ish, estimates were 10, he did well. fourth, recent R-directed redistricting to increase R reps in TN watered down the "Trump Plus Eleventy!" aspect of the district. overall, we should be happy about this and good for TN. it does show the downside of redistricting, you can dilute your strongholds a bit. some say CA might fall into this trap, who knows. Posted by: It's me donna ======= Media bullshit including those Conservative TM sources on the right. Cook had the district at +10 GOP, Van Epps won by 9. Even turnout was about identical to 2022 when the incumbent Green ran in newish district winning by an outmatched black female in money and general dislike of the Biden WH while the GOP rode a mini Red wave into control of the House. The massive spending resulted in Dems banking early votes and the typical GOP dawdling to wait for election day voting trend that has become evident. Trump's team, in his overperformance, made a massive switch to embracing early voting in 2024 instead of the wait for election day. I am still baffled by why they are not running media ads hammering every lie Trump is telling. her campaign was mid when it came to attacking Trump. Special elections are not predictive.
Posted by: TheJamesMadison Special elections are more about party organization and do have minor candidate and times effects. Behn was a bad candidate who was probably helped by the fact that the GOP media hits came late after she had banked a large vote share already in early voting. Timing of oppo hits is very different nowadays due to that fact. Needless to say, Democrats are going to go all out in 2026 for hitting Trump and the GOP on affordability--groceries, health care, etc. The GOP relied on its negative ads in a very generic campaign and counted on the overall partisan makeup of the district for it to work. From what I have gleaned, the local and state GOP did their typical and stupid flyers, robocalls, endorsement, etc until the national GOP swooped in. The fact that snow occurred on Monday rather than Tuesday in TN probably avoided a closer race. Basically, the state and local GOP do not really want to mobilize working class voters because they are not predictable and might vote populist on ballot issues and split tickets rather than what GOP Inc wants. Plus, GOTV brings in a much lower percentage than mailers, ads, etc Posted by: whig at December 03, 2025 10:38 AM (WDjG6) 295

A lot of the rot in the local and state GOP organizations is that most of the folks running them have a tight little racket going where the party officials anoint a candidate with ready donor money if that candidate plays ball and hires the campaign consultant friends and follows the GOP campaign playbook. So you have an iron triangle where donors want GOP candidates to do favors for them in office, the party sets up the link between candidates and donors, and the prepackaged campaign consultants make sure that the GOP candidate does not go off the range. Occasionally, GOP party and campaign consultants essentially grift some poor rich sod into running what they privately know is an unwinnable race because the rich sod often finances the campaign. Thus, the task is not necessarily winning, but insider grift, influence peddling, and rich donor satisfaction.
Outsider candidates are kept out by running the splitter strategy, denial and slow walking any party campaign resources, leaks to the press to undermine candidacies, and so on. All in all, it promotes mediocrity, less voter (and party) engagement, and generic candidates. Posted by: whig at December 03, 2025 10:45 AM (WDjG6) 319

> Driscoll has been spotted spending a lot of personal time with the Bearclaw Brothers since Trump took office.
---------- This goes back to whomever is vetting people like Driscoll. Typically a name is floated, then vetted if there's interest. This person wasn't hired by Trump in person. He was "proffered" by someone else who basically vouched for them. The people doing the vetting and vouching are at odds with Trump and his administration. This was (and apparently still is) a real issue with Trump's administration. He's either blind to it, or whoever's responsible for the vetting of appointees is playing for the other side. 312 I'm in a good mood - still happy after that cabinet thing yesterday! loved everyone ... well not so much Bondi. she's still iffy.
Posted by: BlackOrchid --- Bondi is there in part because previous AGs have let DoJ pros run amuck creating fake investigations of Trump and his colleagues. AGs follow two patterns, crony and self serving outsider backstabbing bastards out to burnish their own reps for fame and/or money. Nixon is an example that was done in when he moved crony Mitchell from AG to oversee his reelection. That meant you get the Saturday Night massacre when a normal crony AG would know not to appoint an asshole Kennedy associate as special prosecutor in the first place. But Nixon had to work with who the Dem Senate would allow him to have as AG in the second term. Clinton picked Reno after his crony attempts got shot down including the departure of DoJ asst AG Webb Hubbell and Reno messed up Clinton along with the independent counsel law. Carter got messed up by his own AGs Civiletti and Bell. And so on. Obama picked a corrupt Eric Holder on purpose and later Loretta Lynch because neither of them wanted higher office or rep, they wanted to cash in. Trump pardons Cuellar.
For years, the Biden Administration weaponized the Justice System against their Political Opponents, and anyone who disagreed with them. One of the clearest examples of this was when Crooked Joe used the FBI and DOJ to “take out” a member of his own Party after Highly Respected Congressman Henry Cuellar bravely spoke out against Open Borders, and the Biden Border “Catastrophe.” Sleepy Joe went after the Congressman, and even the Congressman’s wonderful wife, Imelda, simply for speaking the TRUTH. It is unAmerican and, as I previously stated, the Radical Left Democrats are a complete and total threat to Democracy! They will attack, rob, lie, cheat, destroy, and decimate anyone who dares to oppose their Far Left Agenda, an Agenda that, if left unchecked, will obliterate our magnificent Country. Because of these facts, and others, I am hereby announcing my full and unconditional PARDON of beloved Texas Congressman Henry Cuellar, and Imelda. Henry, I don’t know you, but you can sleep well tonight — Your nightmare is finally over! Posted by: rickb223 at December 03, 2025 10:58 AM (Uy7Y9) 370

The people doing the vetting and vouching are at odds with Trump and his administration.
This was (and apparently still is) a real issue with Trump's administration. He's either blind to it, or whoever's responsible for the vetting of appointees is playing for the other side. Posted by: Martini Farmer ========= You actually have it backwards. What the administration does is float a couple of names to the Senate after ensuring no criminal records, etc. and the Senators over that particular committee, in this case Armed Services, point to acceptable candidates. In part, this is because the Sec of Army as a civilian has power over DoW or DoD contracting for that service and usually senators specialize in grifting relationships between the defense industry and a particular nominee. That is why Trump went with a former Boeing Exec POS (Esper) as DoD Secretary after his first one, Mattis, ignored orders, etc. on the behest of the Deep State. These are who he could get through Senate Armed Services Cmte at the time. As always, follow the money and past relationships with Senators on a cmte and figure out what their donors want.
