Musical Interlude

Song is Golden from the movie KPop Demon Hunters, which is about a KPop (Korean pop music) group that, uh, hunts demons.

The movie is supposed to be pretty good, though when Hololive EN did a watchalong stream, Kronii rolled her eyes so hard that her motion-tracking sensor picked it up.

10 Nowadays, with computers and GPS and other fancy systems, if you want, you can follow a geodesic on the surface of the earth exactly, essentially doing Riemannian parallel transport on the fly, turning your bearing continuously as you go.

I thought moss grew on the north side of trees, and stuff

18 Biden's Dog - probably fine for running Linux. Worst it might need is a bit more RAM if it's desperately short. Modern memory is expensive right now but with that you'd be looking at second-hand DDR3 which is dirt cheap.

Accomack, if you meant me: The house agent in Owensboro, KY, has been sending me listings. Recently I've seen two I would really want to go see, if I were there.

The current plan is after New Year's, to see about an apartment there and about having my stuff put in storage. Rent for a time while I see if I do like it there, or if I'd prefer Indiana (Terre Haute has nice-looking houses). I'm going to have to tell Linda about this -- but I'm waiting until after her birthday, which is Monday. I doubt she will be in favor of it.

76 Well I just pulled the trigger on buying a RX 9070 XT along with a new power supply to go with it.

Been reading too many articles and watching too many videos of warnings that GPU prices are definitely going back up next year.

The only contrarian opinion I’ve seen is from JayzTwoCents on YT who claimed that because GPUs use GDDR6/7 that they shouldn’t be affected like DDR5 going up 200%.

But I’m skeptical and the consensus is the opposite, especially when I read an article in Tom’s Hardware where the rumour is that AMD is definitely raising prices by at least 10% on board partners, PowerColor pretty much confirmed it.

So I bought a PowerColor Hellhound 9070 XT for $629 and I’m sure I’ll be happy with it for several years to come.

It was either that or a RTX 5070 Ti for $809 and I don’t see paying that much extra for very similar performance except in Ray Tracing and having no DLSS or CUDA cores.

86 >> I thought moss grew on the north side of trees, and stuff

I think you'd be interested in this as it relates to navigation and all that. "Parallel transport" is all about what you mean by "straight lines" in a curved space. On the surface of the sphere, a curved 2D space, the geodesics are great circles. A geodesic is, like a straight line in flat space, the shortest distance between two points. And note that is closed. If you keep going "dead straight", parallel transporting yourself on the surface, you get back to where you started.

Now, on the surface of an ellipsoid, a surprising result is those geodesics are not generally closed. The earth, due to rotation, is really more close to an ellipsoid than a perfect sphere.

91 Trump has halted all immigration from “all third world countries”.

Also “millions of green cards will be re-examined” from 19 countries.

I guess we’re going to be arguing over what a third world country is and which qualify for the next two weeks,

For example, if I started here and went to see Pixy, and followed the true ellipsoidal geodesic, I take the shortest possible path to Pixy. However, were I bound to continue on that straight line, when I went around the earth a full 360 degrees of longitude, I'd miss getting home exactly by around a mile or two, and that distance would grow with each loop.

Going on on and on, my path would fill a band a few degrees wider that the latitude difference between here and Pixy. I would densely cover ever point in that band, but I would never come back exactly to my starting point. I'd get arbitrarily close, but never reach it exactly. The geodesic would condemn me to wander the surface of the earth, confined to that band, forever.

96 Thankfully, I didn’t have to do much besides drive and eat.

My brother cooked dinner last night.
He loves to cook, and found some recipe on TikTok or somewhere to make baked turkey quarters (wings and flats) with some spices, and peppers & onions. It tasted pretty good but the skin was soggy as opposed to crispy, which isn’t terrible but certainly not expected from turkey.

His wife turned her nose up at it, ate leftover ham instead, because she didn’t like the way it looked.
Pissed him right off, though, after he’d already cooked a bunch of stuff to bring to her family’s dinner and then he came home and cooked for us.

I ate it right up, along with the chicken & dumplings and collards he’d already made.

I’ll be eating the leftovers tonight.

The only thing I really missed was Mom’s deviled eggs and homemade Mac & Cheese.

97 Good morning morons

98 Good morning.
My Thanksgiving meal was a one inch thick ribeye.
Cooked over charcoal.
Illuminated by a headlamp.
While sitting at a picnic table.
In a grove of massive white pine trees listening to the sound of the wind in their branches under a moonlit sky.
Next to a roaring fire in 27 degree weather.
In a National Park that I had pretty much to myself.
It was so tender I could cut it with the serrated side of a metal spork.
Perhaps the most delicious steak I've ever eaten.

I have so much to be thankful for.

102 Well, my neighbors threw their annual "come watch football on Thanksgiving" party so my front lawn is covered with the trash that the guest took from the house but chose to not take into their car.

Sigh.
