That OpenAI court case; it reminds me of a dystopian movie from the early 70s. It was a George Lucas film. Might h-ave been his first. It was called THX-1138. One scene had Robert Duval's character inside something that looked like a 'confessional booth'. It kind of was but the god was a computer. Creepy, weird, good movie, by the way.

What matters with Comey is The Meme. Prison? No Prison? That's just window dressing so long as the bastard gets dragged through the mud. If he gets convicted of being a shitbird, then hey, everyone knows he's a shitbird and always has been. But if he, now being a known and confirmed shitbird, evades conviction for it, then, hey, everyone knows that both he *and* the farcical "Justice" "System" he is imputed to work for is shitbirds from stem to stern.

Our company just decided, all of a sudden, that we weren't going to use Lenovos any more. So we spent a huge amount of time and effort replacing them with, ugh, Dells.
Typical of the company, we've never been told the reason, but everyone assumes it's some kind of spyware. Posted by: BeckoningChasm at November 25, 2025 *** Dells were the standard at my former employer. You could order one with a few more options, more RAM, etc., but it pretty much had to be a Dell. the problem with Dell is the problem with any company that reaches a certain size or market penetration: quality goes to hell.
I have a Dell that's about five years old and it works pretty well. Bluetooth, for example, let's me go out into the hallway and I can still get the dull meeting in my headphones. Folks who got brand new Dells tell me that Bluetooth doesn't even cover their office any more. And it seems like updates are a weekly process now--not to improve hardware performance, but to fix things that just stop working. Bah, I say. Also about virus protection: Is it necessary on a Linux machine? Is there even a version for Linux, or will the standard Windows version of a virus protection program do for that?

IIRC, the Japanese black bears that are attacking people on Honshu are smaller but obviously more aggressive than North American black bears.
The brown bears on Hokkaido are larger than North American grizzly bears and only go on a people eating rampage every 60 years or so. Posted by: fluffy at November 25, 2025 06:42 AM (AN2gy) 104

more on Comey:
LB @beyondreasdoubt 16h my quick two cents -indictment dismissed without prejudice (e.,g., can be filed again within the statute of limitations) -if Halligan’s appointment is improper, District Court needs to fulfill its duties Posted by: m at November 25, 2025 06:45 AM (RuTUS) 107
The classic noir Laura is on Movies! right now. You know, I've never actually seen all of it -- or if I have, it was so long ago I've forgotten a lot of it. Gene Tierney is lovely, Clifton Webb steals a lot of the scenes he's in, and there's a featured role for the young pre-mustache Vincent Price.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at November 25, 2025 06:40 AM (wzUl9) Linux virii are rare but they exist. I don't believe that a Windows program would suffice, even with WINE. Lewis & Clark in their journals noted that Grizzly bears on the upper Missouri pretty much dispensed with all the modern pleasantries and would attack humans at a full gallop at first sight.
One of the great historical explorer screw ups, Lewis didn’t really believe all the Indian stories about this “White Bear” (unknown to the science), besides, they were an Infantry company with the latest weapons, they would be no match. Everyone was excited, and couldn’t wait to take them on. Then … they didn’t see any bears at first. But … the tracks. Huge tracks … hm.. Later: “I expect everyone’s curiosity is pretty well satisfied with respect to these gentlemen. I’d rather fight 2 Indians than 1 bear”.
