OpenAI is facing seven lawsuits this month, three from the families of users who went insane, and four from the families of users who committed suicide.

Now while I'm not a huge fan of this type of suit - the dangers of AI "therapists" have been known for more than fifty years - there may be some merit to the negligence angle in the allegations:
Shamblin's case is part of a wave of lawsuits filed this month against OpenAI arguing that ChatGPT's manipulative conversation tactics, designed to keep users engaged, led several otherwise mentally healthy people to experience negative mental health effects. The suits claim OpenAI prematurely released GPT-4o - its model notorious for sycophantic, overly affirming behavior - despite internal warnings that the product was dangerously manipulative.
On the other hand, insane-while-online rarely works out as a personal growth path. Just consider Bluesky.

From mid-June to August 2025, ChatGPT told Madden, "I'm here," more than 300 times - which is consistent with a cult-like tactic of unconditional acceptance.
Or, to be fair, consistent with saying "I'm here".
At one point, ChatGPT asked: "Do you want me to guide you through a cord-cutting ritual - a way to symbolically and spiritually release your parents/family, so you don't feel tied [down] by them anymore?
Which is... A bit weird, I must admit.
Madden was committed to involuntary psychiatric care on August 29, 2025. She survived - but after breaking free from these delusions, she was $75,000 in debt and jobless.
Restitution for that much - and legal costs - would seem appropriate.
"A healthy system would recognize when it's out of its depth and steer the user toward real human care," Vasan said. "Without that, it's like letting someone just keep driving at full speed without any brakes or stop signs."
Real humans tend to do that a lot too.

Souse had to get DEF in the bus and since it was my day off we took a lovely ride through the countryside. That was my "God moment". Getting up the bus stairs was not as easy as when I was in the fifth grade, however.

Quick summary: My contract abruptly ran out of funding. Originally we were told to only work seven hours yesterday and go home. The person responsible for our contract made a math error and as a result, we had to leave a lot sooner than that.

Fine. Four hours work, four PTO. And I probably had to take the rest of the week off. But late afternoon, we got a message that things had been worked out so I'm back to work today.

Dells seem to be more well suited to being a "fleet" vehicle, so to speak.

Sort of like looking at a Ford F-150 vs a Honda Ridgeline. Sure, they're both pickups, but Ford is basically a financial institution that makes vehicles on the side, so buying a crapton of them on hock is easier and marginally cheaper. And "marginally cheaper" is 99.999% of any management decision.

It is. We're good until January. My boss told me a bit about what was going on behind the scenes. The person who was supposed to sign off on the funding had not been back since the furlough. It went to her chief who did not think that he had the authorization to sign it.

Things got cleared up shortly afterward.

Yes, it's much less likely that I'll run across a virus for Apple products, but "less likely" is not "zero chance." I downloaded the free version of Avast One on both this laptop MacBook Air and the iMac on my desk. Neither found anything concerning.

Dells were the standard at my former employer. You could order one with a few more options, more RAM, etc., but it pretty much had to be a Dell.

96 the problem with Dell is the problem with any company that reaches a certain size or market penetration: quality goes to hell.

I have a Dell that's about five years old and it works pretty well. Bluetooth, for example, let's me go out into the hallway and I can still get the dull meeting in my headphones.

Folks who got brand new Dells tell me that Bluetooth doesn't even cover their office any more. And it seems like updates are a weekly process now--not to improve hardware performance, but to fix things that just stop working.

Bah, I say.

Linux virii are rare but they exist. I don't believe that a Windows program would suffice, even with WINE. I've heard ClamAV is pretty good.
