Fenimore Cooper was an affirmative action hero before it technically existed. He was one of the first American novelists and the budding intelligentsia rallied around him because he was what we had.
But he was really, really bad. The big thing he had going for him (other than the family name) was that he was writing about the 'first' frontier and this made all the Easterner nostalgic and he was AMERICAN. I mean, Twain had a point, but who here wouldn't like to see college faculty be ludicrously biased *in favor* of their country? Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. The Robe, Dr Zhivago, great winter movies. Another one - Stalingrad - the 1993 German one, not the more recent Russian one.
It matches The Robe for brutality, and seems to be a fairly accurate snapshot of the final chapter for the 6th Army, culminating of course in desperate winter scenes. Been a long time but seem to recall The Robe was a nice more plausible version of the historical events depicted than the usual fairy tales. Brutal, both nature, and man (including of course the horribly oppressed, dispossessed, and otherwise angelic Huron). Notsothoreau, I have found the best tool for blackberry thickets is one of those hooked linoleum knives.
Grab the cane, pull it taught, cut it as far in as you can by hooking it and pulling back to cut it, and then repeat. I might use a small folding saw if the canes get too thick at the base, but I have to cut in to where they are first. then, once I have the base exposed by cutting all the canes, I use an Ames Razor Back trenching shovel to pop the root ball out. It is never easy. I have used machetes and hedge trimmers but they are not really controllable. I hate blackberries. Actually the best tool is a Cat to blade the thicket off, but that is not good in side yards and laurel hedges Posted by: Kindltot at November 28, 2025 08:32 PM (rbvCR) 103
Dad was a Korea-era vet. About 1960, he thought he would clear out the blackberries in the back pasture by blowing them up with dynamite. He went to the local hardware store, bought a couple of sticks (another thing they took from us!) and prepped one.
He lit the fuse, tossed it into the thicket, and ran. There was a mighty bang, which came dangerously close to breaking every window in the vicinity. He checked the results. All he had managed to do, at the risk of jail and paying for property damages (which he could in no way afford) was to blow a hole only one foot across through the top of the thicket. I have a tractor attachment very much like that: a heavy back blade with foot-long scarifier tines. Bought the late neighbor's lots, paid to have the trash trees removed, then essayed to root out the forest mat beneath ground level by driving over and over it, pulling out the web of intertwined stump-lumber. I spent the rest of the year at it -- and it was really hard on my back, too. Lots of sudden stops. You don't just need the blade; you need the whole Sherman. I enjoyed the work, though. I never heard of a Colbertism silkworm scheme in NW Ohio, but it's the only way to account for the number of very old mulberry colonies you find in back lots. People had to really really want some berries (and I never heard anybody that enthusiastic about the character of mulberry fruit). They send runners out from a well-hidden deep stump bole, and those find fences and other trees to twine around. Tough vine; you can cut it out all day just to see it come back the next week if you don't dig out the bole, and the bole invites the dynamite noted above. More than once I've chased down the mother trunk and built a fire pit around it.Hard to do on the property line though, and they seem to know right where the line is.

Posted by: bear with asymmetrical balls at November 28, 2025 09:35 PM (QPCEj) Eagle Mtn Calif... a deep strip mine out in the Desert. There was a really cool project to fill it in with garbage from all over Southern Calif, but folks in Palms Springs and Palm Desert killed it using environmental laws. So... Enviro laws were used to bankrupt a project, that would have mitigated an Enviro problem.. go figure. Posted by: Romeo13 at November 28, 2025 09:39 PM (mP0Kj) 181
If this was a real country, we'd have turned the Grand Canyon into the world's largest ball pit several generations ago. This country can't do great things anymore.
Posted by: bear with asymmetrical balls at November 28, 2025 09:35 PM (QPCEj) Imagine if we did that, and you jumped in, and then had to figure out how to climb back up out of 5,000 feet of balls. Posted by: Tom Servo at November 28, 2025 09:39 PM (3U2FH) 182
Paying players is a done deal. We’ll see if caps become a thing. I see an informal minor league system forming.
Sometimes I think the Russians are going so slowly because they know they can’t have/don’t want all of Ukraine. The whole thing stinks and we should just leave. Posted by: Accomack at November 28, 2025 09:40 PM (IG7T0) 183
If the snail also killed and crippled a million Ukrainian soldiers and destroyed a thousand NATO tanks while moving in the straight line, then the Russians would have a reason to be embarrassed.
Posted by: Idaho Spudboy at November 28, 2025 09:38 PM (TVOOe) Russians are fighting Europe, and the US... just using Ukrainian soldiers. Posted by: Romeo13 at November 28, 2025 09:41 PM (mP0Kj) 184

They built a 27 hole golf course in Houston on top of a former dump. It might be the highest elevation in Houston. Posted by: the way I see it at November 28, 2025 09:42 PM (KDPiq) 185

Howdy, sir! How’s your neck of the woods? Gorgeous day here today, sunshine and 50 on the beach. Going to get chilly tonight. Hope you and the wife and the demon dog are well. Happy Thanksgiving! Posted by: nurse ratched at November 28, 2025 09:43 PM (mT+6a) 186
Idaho Spudboy - bangalore torpedoes sound right for that job. Removing wire and barriers seems similar to clearing out tough foilage.

The drone tech in the Uke war has advanced to the point that neither side can risk being seen out in the open. Makes any large scale advance impossible for either side.

I just drive the tractor with a bush hog on it thru the blackberry patches. They will come back next year.

173 @169 ritually bury the penguin remains to ward off other penguins
Posted by: Smell the Glove at November 28, 2025 09:33 PM (bfwj/) Don't bury them. If you really want to ward off other penguins, you have to display the remains of the slain to let their kinfolk know what horrors await them if they continue their foolishness. There's a reason Vlad's impalement victims were outside the walls and not in the banquet hall. Posted by: tankdemon at November 28, 2025 09:46 PM (IxQNO) 190

>>I have seen someone calculate that if a snail had started at the Russians original position 3 years ago and moved steadily in a straight line, it would have made it to the Polish border by now. A theoretical snail could do it, but in reality, the snail would have had to stop for cigarettes and alcohol along the way, and probably got distracted by some whore snails looking to make some scratch. I went to town to get groceries to make dinner, and the Chinese restaurant was open, so I ate there. Nice meal for $12.95, too.

How many ball pit balls would it take to fill the grand canyon?
Number of Balls= Volume of Grand Canyon 4.17×10^12m^3 / Volume of One Ball 0.0034 m ≈1.23×10^15 Conclusion: It would take approximately 1.23 quadrillion ball pit balls to fill the Grand Canyon. 🤖 Posted by: mindful webworker - no math is an island at November 28, 2025 09:53 PM (LaTF/) Processing 0.03, elapsed 0.037 seconds. |
