The Morning Rant: Measures...Counter-Measures...Counter-Counter-Measures...

punk-monkey.jpg

People who think about the evolution of warfare have sleepless nights worrying about drones. Israel and Ukraine are ground-zero for drone warfare...and the pace of technological change is breathtaking! In a few short years we have gone from large drones flying high, armed with a single missile or a few cameras, to swarms of drones with small explosive devices that can overwhelm defenses and destroy multi-million dollar equipment for a few hundred dollars, and reconnaissance drones the size of a paperback that zip around the battlefield providing data in real time (Hello, Yahya Sinwar.)

Counter-measures arrived quickly, which is unsurprising, since the evolution of warfare occurs most quickly during war! But until very recently, those counter-measures were very expensive in comparison to the drones themselves, which are often just modified civilian drones...essentially toys for grownups. Using a $million missile to shoot down a $10,000 drone is a temporary answer, and one that is unsupportable in the long-term. And the smaller, cheaper drones are difficult because of their size, even if an army could field enough missiles.

But along comes Israel's arms industry with an obvious but technologically difficult response: Lasers!

Killing drones for cents: World's first 100 kW combat laser ready for deployment

Israel plans to deploy its first operational high-power laser air-defense system by the end of the year, marking a significant shift in how the country counters drones, rockets, and other aerial threats, the Defense Ministry said.

The system, known as Iron Beam, completed operational testing in September and will become the world’s first combat-ready laser interceptor.

The 100-kilowatt system is designed to destroy targets within seconds and at a fraction of the cost of traditional missile-based defenses.

Obviously this system hasn't seen significant combat, and until it is tested in many battles it will remain experimental. But the basic concept is sound, and while the devil is in the details, improvements in software speed and sensor technology will push this response down to the squad level very quickly.

Drones have the capacity to do tremendous damage to technologically superior forces. Imagine a swarm of drones launched from near our B-2, B-52, or F-35 bases. A few hundred thousand dollars worth of easily procured hardware could conceivably destroy many billions of dollars worth of our almost irreplaceable weaponry in a matter of moments. This isn't World War II, where factories could produce thousands of tanks or planes each year. It takes about 18 months to build an F-35. How many can we afford to lose?

While my personal preference is for a bunch of Midwestern goose hunters to be drafted into the armed forces for drone hunting duty, the future of laser defense is assured. Drones aren't going away, and must be considered an integral part of both offensive and defensive operations.

It won't be long before those airbases are surrounded by a multi-layered defense system that includes lasers to defend against drones. The question is: what comes next? Laser weapons for infantry, or tanks, or helicopters?

10 I don't understand how lasers can take out a swarm of 1000s of mini drones.

I would think you would need a weapon that can direct some sort of field that would fry their electronics. Sort of like what an EMP is supposed to accomplish.

11 One of the challenges I can see for laser-based weapon platforms is ensuring that the system has power. But that would also be true of a ballistic system that relies on computational power for acquiring targets.

Drones just need enough power to reach their destination and deliver their payload.

26 As far as understand it, (I'm not a weapons researcher), lasers greatly suffer from a power issue affecting portability.

Very unlikely to get the "Phased Plasma Rifle in the 40 watt Range" anytime in the near future.

But, on a warship, very doable. I'm not sure how far down the power source can be scaled to put it on a helicopter though.

27 The use of blinding laser weapons as a method of warfare is prohibited by the Protocol on Blinding Laser Weapons, which is part of the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW) adopted in 1995.
This protocol specifically bans the use of lasers designed to cause permanent blindness to unenhanced vision, recognizing the severe and irreversible harm such weapons inflict.
While the protocol does not prohibit the use of lasers for other purposes—such as range finding or targeting systems—it strictly forbids their use to blind combatants.
The prohibition reflects a global consensus that intentionally causing blindness in soldiers is a grave violation of the laws of war. You may now continue.

Deploy smoke that is opaque to the laser frequency being used and the laser would need incredible energy to still function (to burn off the smoke)

33 Iron Beam seems like fascinating tech, hope it works. For drone suppression, I'm more hopeful for things along the lines of the Epirus Leonidas HP Microwave system, which in a recent test disabled 49 drones at once.

The challenge militarily is to be able to knock out a drone swarm, not just single drones.

Posted by: Tom Servo at December 04, 2025 11:08 AM (uWKK8)

34 If you can find the drones, you can stop them. There's no reason why each of those multi-million dollar missiles could not be replaced by a $100 drone similar to the one it's intended to stop. It's not even very hard, it's kind of an inversion of the problem of figuring out how get a swarm of drones to not collide with each other.

The problem is that you have to detect the incoming drones and that takes sensors and sensors tend to be both expensive and fragile.

But honestly if blinding weapons are effective they'll be used in the next serious war. If they aren't then they won't.

This will be the key for the next decade at least and it is what we are building towards. One system to take out high flyers, another to take out multiple flyers at low altitude. And something else to take out the very low flyers. ( think a drone with a grenade zooming up a street and cutting down an alley kind of low). And then something to down masses of drones.
These systems will include kinetic shooters, electronic warfare systems (jammers), EMP, and lasers.
The guy who makes a really good thing in any of these will be $$$!

Fire and forget is something plus channel hopping can make it difficult. From my meager understanding, emp weapons are only semi directional and thus would take out friend and foe unless hardened against it.

Drones, like AI, are a disruptive technology change on par with firearms, radio, or missiles in combat. I don't think we or others have figured out all its implications yet but cheap throwaway weapons that can do mini kamikaze missions, quiet battlefield surveillance, serve as lurking weapons platforms is sort of like a swiss army knife of military usefulness.

Now apply that thought to urban warfare. Ukraine is sort of like the Russo Japanese war in 1905 or the Spanish Civil War. Proving ground for a lot of new technologies and revising older ones for more lethality. From all accounts, a very bloody mess instead of the relatively bloodless wars the US has engaged in since Vietnam.

The Russians are showing the importance of arty right now in Ukraine. And honestly its because arty is cheap.

This is a real problem for the US moving forward. In a scenario where you can kill just about anything you can see, using cheap but effective weapons makes sense.

Out current model of using the best and most expensive things money can buy isn't going to work out well in a real war.

Which is why of course that Iran cannot have nukes--that Obama and Biden and Western Europe even thought that was desirable was idiotic because it would mean Israel would have to nuke Iran first or face total destruction--something like a mere three nuclear weapons or so would destroy the heart of the Israeli state.

So Israel would have to launch preemptive nuclear strike if Iran had the bomb or risk a nuke or two getting through from a missile barrage.

I would imagine that both S. Korea and Japan are having similar thoughts about N. Korea and its nukes. Ditto Pakistan and India.

Yep. Interesting applications of warfare in Dune. Shield technology rendered a lot weapons obsolete. (Lasguns + Shields = Nuclear BOOM! -- for both parties)

Hunter-seeker drones were tools of assassinations among the Great Houses. Easily concealed, but they had a short range, so the operator had to be nearby.

84 Question- Does it really take about 18 months to build an F-35, or...

If presented with an exigent threat/need, could that timeframe be dramatically shortened, or more to the point, do we need something with all the bells and whistles, when something a lot simpler is just as good?

Russia was unprepared for what came as a result of the Ukraine incursion, but they seem to have rapidly cranked up their production of war materials when they were forced to.

85 Drones may become tomorrow's artillery. Imagine ISO Containers full of drones instead of trucks dragging cannons and ammo.

Its an interesting question which will be cheaper in the future.

Artillery is a little harder to target, but it has cheap mobility and its fast.

Drones need a separate means of movement which has a price and they are slower but they can course correct in a way arty can't.

Right now artillery needs human management but that could be automated as well I suppose.

You could also imagine artillery fired drone gliders so you don't have to give them motors.

I'm not sure owning land is even necessary. I'll bet that as we speak, China has tractor trailers loaded with drones sitting in ports and other locations. All they need to do is hook them up to a truck and drive to a location near a base.

This is what Ukraine basically did to attack Russia's strategic air force bombers a while back.

Drove unassuming looking trucks with custom made trailers that launched dozens of attack drones. Some of the attacks were 100s' of miles inside Russia.

I think Russian drone technology now has something similar to our old anti tank missiles where a long fiber optic cable winds out for control. No radio signal either to track. And I would imagine that Ukraine probably will develop something similar if they do not have it already.

159 I have never been so happy with my fellow citizens when my locality voted down a $200M+ bond to update the police and fire department's infrastructure... and completely rebuild downtown.

Enough voters saw through the stupidity and voted it down. It's still a sore subject locally. (November was about whether we vote in some council members who supported or opposed it. Only one supporter got in, I believe.)
Posted by: Formerly Virginian at December 04, 2025 11:27 AM (zjgNU)

Since I’ve lived in my current county/city not a single bond measure for schools, fire or police has failed. They all pass with at least 60% and sometimes over 70%.

But there was a bond measure to increase car registration. It was written specifically to allocate the money to construction projects, not to just throw the money into the general fund. It was construction projects desperately needed to alleviate traffic. I voted yes for this. It failed 2:1, lol. It’s like fuck people, you’re fine with hundreds of millions of dollars going into a black hole for “safety and education” but spending $25M to build a couple of bridges and widen some roads is not money well spent?

Ugggghhhh.

The thought of thousands of drones converging on one's position is terrifying. Ya can't shoot 'em all down.

Belt-fed 12 gauge machine guns pumping out bird shot from an armored battle-box with a shitload of ammo.

Even better is if you could switch to buckshot or slugs on the fly, like the Bushmaster chain guns for ground defense.

Short range, but weaponized awesome is a damned effective weapon.

161 Drones carrying incendiary payloads scattering across a dense urban environment would cause havoc. Add in a few to tie up traffic and maybe target key pumping stations and such and you have a shockingly low-budget way to bring a city to its knees.

This is the way. There's no need to burn down cities anymore, you just need to be intelligent in taking out infrastructure. After that, the cities become unlivable.

163 Did they adapt that into the movie with (Kiss) Gene Simmons as the bad guy? Seems from only seeing bits and bobs of that movie or its trailers it had a similar plot.

No, that was Runaway an original screenplay by Chrichon.

I mean not that you're wrong but the point of the Instapundit post was that the X account that was tsk tsk'ing KL about her bikini is based in Africa. Just more NGO/USAID money being used by foreign propagandists.

165 Leftists, because it has become their pseudo religion, and Islam because it is their religion, have both decided doubling down is preferable to admitting error because admitting error risks bringing the whole facade of their worldview made from tissues of lies down.

Pulled it up, Runaway with Gene Simmons and Tom Selleck is the movie and directed by, ta da, Michael Crichton himself. I guess Crichton stole from himself to make the film.

Donald J. Trump
@realDonaldTrump

The SLEAZEBAG Governor of Colorado, Jared Polis, refuses to allow an elderly woman, Tina Peters, who was unfairly convicted of what the Democrats do, cheating on Elections, out of jail! She was convicted for trying to stop Democrats from stealing Colorado Votes in the Election. She was preserving Election Records, which she was obligated to do under Federal Law. She has now served more than one year in jail, and has eight years to go. On top of everything else, she is a cancer “survivor.” This lightweight Governor, who has allowed his State to go to hell (Tren de Aragua, anyone?), should be ashamed of himself. FREE TINA!

174 Didn't the Japanese try to do this with incendiary balloons during WWII? A primitive proto-drone technology

Yes. Cruel and ineffective, they killed six Americans, five of them children. In the book Japan At War by Haruko Taya Cook and, Theodore F. Cook describes the terrible conditions Japanese school girls lived and worked in to build these cruel and ineffective weapons.
