Yes. The perpetrator is also white, so it's a crime.
Now if he were swarthier? Not rape.

19 From Claude F Maratonni

Amnon was David’s firstborn son by his second wife Ahinoam. Amnon raped his half-sister Tamar and was killed by Absalom. The story of Tamar’s rape is not only a story of lust, but also of political ambition. Amnon was the first-born son of David and Absalom was his second son. Both men were in the line of succession for David’s throne. In this story of lust, Tamar is a pawn in the hands of her rapist, a fact that reveals the vulnerable estate of women who lived in a patriarchal society.

Harry Callahan: Yeah, well, when an adult male is chasing a female with intent to commit rape, I shoot the bastard - that's my policy.

The Mayor: Intent? How'd you establish that?

Harry Callahan: When a naked man is chasing a woman through a dark alley with a butcher knife and a hard on, I figure he isn't out collecting for the Red Cross.

The Mayor: I think he's got a point. Ah yes, the Rape of Tamar painting.

30 I'd tell you the story, but it takes 37 verses to get through it all.

Posted by: 2 Samuel 13 at November 24, 2025 09:39 AM (XQo4F)

31 Okay: "Tamar . . . was the daughter-in-law of Judah (twice), as well as the mother of two of [Judah's] children: the twins Perez and Zerah." (Wiki). She was the wife of Er, Judah's eldest son, who died at the hand of God because of wickedness. Then the second son, Onan, was supposed to marry and impregnate Tamar to carry on the family line. Onan, as we know, refused to mate with her and "spilled his seed upon the ground." So God polished him off as well.

Tamar went on to have other adventures. That might make an interesting TV mini-series. (As if)

Anyway: It's a colorful painting with a strong sense of movement and action.

Be it so. Not hanging this painting is your custom; lay down your hammer. But my nation has also a custom. When men rape their half-sister, we hang them, and confiscate all their property. My carpenters shall therefore erect gibbets on which to hang all concerned. Let us all act according to national customs.

79 'The Sin of Onan"

From the 'Stuff I did not know file':

- deliberately refusing to fulfill the levirate duty + exploiting the widow sexually while denying her a child. It is condemned as an act of greed, injustice toward a vulnerable woman, and defiance of family/religious obligation. It is not a biblical condemnation of contraception, masturbation, or “spilling seed” in general.

That is why Tamar later takes matters into her own hands—and why Judah ultimately declares “She is more righteous than I.

Posted by: Tonypete at November 24, 2025 09:49 AM (cYBz/)

80 Tough scene but well painted. The vibrant colors grab your attention at the same time as the figures. I was surprised at the knife (phallic symbol?) and cup he's holding. The few accoutrements show the woman's wealth and status but isn't enough to protect her. The story of the rape of Tamar is almost Shakespearean in its tragic outcome and this could be an opening illustration in a novel or play.

I was surprised this was painted in the 17th century. It had the feel of some neoclassical paintings from the early 19th century. I assume it was an influence on the later artists.

84 > 47 Absalom was pretty rapey himself, as I recall.

It was the style at the time.

After murdering his (full) sister Tamar's rapist, their half-brother Amnon, Absalom fled to his maternal grandfather, the king of Geshur. Later Absalom came back and tried to overthrow their collective father, David. He had some initial success, which included raping a bunch of David's concubines, but eventually lost and got whacked.

Quite a family dynamic they had going on there.

86 In Hebrew, the pansy flower is called Amnon & Tamar. The flower also has a nickname in English: Jack & Jill. But that hopefully doesn't make sense.

Leh me 'splain.

This started with the Russian nickname for the pansy, Ivan & Maria. It's from a folk tale about a brother and sister who were separated in infancy/childhood, met and fell in love later ad adults and when they found out the bad news, they died in sorrow embracing each other.

So when Hebrew poet Shaul Tchernichovsky translated the Russian tale, he used the closest biblical story when translating their names.

Now you know.

106 47 Absalom was pretty rapey himself, as I recall.

It was the style at the time.
*
After murdering his (full) sister Tamar's rapist, their half-brother Amnon, Absalom fled to his maternal grandfather, the king of Geshur. Later Absalom came back and tried to overthrow their collective father, David. He had some initial success, which included raping a bunch of David's concubines, but eventually lost and got whacked.

Quite a family dynamic they had going on there.

199 I've read through the entire story beginning with the Rape of Tamar, with just a bit of reading through the lines, and come to the conclusion that Absalom, in fact was right, and the entire situation was caused by David's failures as a father and as a King.
After the rape was discovered, David disciplined Amnon a little bit but basically said "oh he's my son, boys will be boys" even though under their law the punishment should have been death, or at least banishment.
Absalom, being the kind of man who holds a grudge intensely, played nice for an entire year before he set up a scene where he could slaughter Amnon as revenge, and David was much harsher on him. (But he eventually allowed him back, another mistake on David's part)
When Absalom rebelled, at least half of Israel was willing to join him because David's friends and advisors were running things so corruptly, and he only got his crown back because Absalom made foolish choices as well.

Then again, when he worked in marble, things were rather different. In the Pieta sculpture, Mary is smokin' hawt, to the point that Mike's patrons in the Church bitched about her body being too sexy under her robes. He responded that virgins retain their youth and beauty.

Yeah, and the musical section that comes right after that set of lyrics is just simply amazing. Rush seems to be one of those things that people either "get" or don't get, but even though that particular song doesn't show up on many "Top 20 Rush Songs" lists, that band could just rip into outright *magical* sections within a song that few even remember today.

It tells you that these stories are about real people, shown with their ugly sides as well as their good sides. The Death of Absolom has been painted often, and that's probably even more significant. David had ordered no one to harm Absalom, even though he had rebelled, because David still loved him. So Joab said "Fuck you, I'm the head of the Army now!" and killed him personally. David tried to appoint someone else head of his army, but Joab killed him as well.
After that you can read between the lines and sense that David never left his palace in Jerusalem again - Joab appears to have been in charge in any real sense.
One of the first acts Solomon undertakes when he is crowned King is to have Joab murdered.

The story is a pivotal moment in the biblical narrative, serving as a catalyst for violence and rebellion within David's household, as prophesied by Nathan after David's own sins with Bathsheba.

One of the odder things in modern corporate culture is that there are constant expenditures of time and money on improving things with very, very little interest in making sure any of these changes actually improve anything.

The defining paradigm of military staff management is "find the one E4 who isn't totally incompetent and work him to death".

You know you're that guy when you get two E8s almost coming to blows arguing over who you work for, and the shouting match in front of a bunch of lower enlisted only ends after the 6'4" company XO wades in and physically separates the two E8s.

Gotcher hip boots on? Yes? Then you may proceed ...

According to the Encyclopædia Britannica Eleventh Edition, it was considered that Le Sueur's work lent itself readily to the engraver's art, as he had a delicate perception of varied shades of grave and elevated sentiment, and possessed the power to render them. His graceful facility in composition was always restrained by a very fine taste, but his works often fail to please completely, because, producing so much, he had too frequent recourse to conventional types, and partly because he rarely saw colour except with the cold and clayey quality proper to the school of Vouet; yet his St Paul at Ephesus and one or two other works show that he was not naturally deficient in this sense, and whenever we get direct reference to nature—as in the monks of the St Bruno series—we recognize his admirable power to read and render physiognomy of varied and serious type.
