This week's exciting episode: Stripped Cars! Voyage to the Planet of Prehistoric Women ![]() Ernesto Perez Carrillo is one of the reigning master blenders in the cigar world. His company, recently renamed Casa Carrillo, is best known for its prestige lines that have claimed top honors on cigar rating lists - Pledge, Encore, Endure. But the company's Essence line, priced more affordably, is now a big part of their total line-up. I happened to try three of the four offerings in that line (didn't encounter the Connecticut), so here is a brief review of each. The Essence Honduras is nearly a Honduran puro (there is some Nicaraguan filler) with a handsome chocolate brown wrapper. Upper end of medium-full in profile, with good construction, draw, and smoke volume. For me it was straight oak, earth, and leather all the way through - anyone who gravitates towards that profile would enjoy this stick. The Maduro offering has a rustic dark Connecticut broadleaf wrapper, with Nicaraguan and Dominican filler aged 5 years. Construction and smoke were excellent. A solid medium in profile, it was more to the cedar than cocoa end of the maduro spectrum, but very tasty, with a very smooth finish with a hint of sweetness throughout. The Sumatra stick has a medium profile from Nicaraguan and Honduran fillers (and binders) and an attractive light brown Ecuador Sumatra wrapper. Construction again was excellent. Throughout I got cedar and other woods, and rich tobacco flavors. The robusto and toro vitolas in this line run from $6-$8 per stick. All three were quality offerings at this affordable price point.Very nicely done, rhomboid! Thank you! As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid Anyone have others to include? Posted by: GWB at November 23, 2025 07:03 PM (bFn+/) I hope it lives up to your reputation of the originals. I think it's most of the way there. I think the single action trigger is a bit heavier, but the double action trigger is smoother without the "stacking" of the originals. If you don't care for the grips, you can swap them out with the originals. I prefer rubber for the .357 Magnum loads myself. Considering that the new production ones are half the cost of the originals, I think it's a good buy. Note that the insides of the modern ones are completely different from that of the originals. No interchangeable parts on inside. Posted by: Ed L at November 23, 2025 07:13 PM (BCwQW) 21

I've got a Colt Python manufactured decades ago, but, unfortunately, I don't dare shoot it. It is some kind of special edition my late father purchased, primarily because it commemorated the revenooers struggles against the moonshiners, all kinds of gold art work and such like. He was with the ATF before it ever became known as the ATF, and he was only involved in chasing bootleggers in North Carolina, never the firearms stuff. A beautiful gun, with a couple of his own personal modifications (he had his badge number engraved on the barrel, and he replaced the Colt medallion on one side of the grips with the dept logo from his badge). it's the only one in my collection I won't shoot. His EDC when he was a criminal investigator was, I believe, a Colt Cobra (or possibly a S&W Chief's Special; not sure).

When I was first introduced to the M1 by an older gentleman (though now that I think about it, probably not as old as I am now) the first thing he taught me was to keep digits out of the bolt path. In all honesty, I did smoke one when I was in my late teens, and it was pretty foul. The first cigar I ever smoked was a Dutch Masters that I filched from my father's office. i was six years old. Went w-a-y in the back of the neighborhood and lit up, and actually kind of liked it, but decided that I could take it or leave it. When I graduated from high school, I got into genuinely fine cigars, and loved them, but maybe 20 years later, when they had become a "thing", and dilettante smokers had driven the prices of good cigars astronomically high, I switched to American Spirit cigarettes. Gave up smoking altogether about 7 years ago; made more sense to put that money in ammo. Posted by: Paco at November 23, 2025 07:39 PM (mADJX) 69

Is it sexy because it's never been fired, and only dropped once? Posted by: Duncanthrax at November 23, 2025 07:27 PM (0sNs1) The rifle interested Springfield Armory enough that they modified one to chamber .30-06 in 1916-18 (before the French adopted it in 1917). Although the US never got beyond the experimental stage, it did have some influence on the postwar Pederson and Garand prototypes developed in the 1920s. So it has some claim to be called a firearms milestone. Posted by: Ed L at November 23, 2025 07:40 PM (BCwQW) 77

In .357/.38 and an extra cylinder for 9mm. True to 1873 spec SAA with no safety. - blaster Those guns are an awful lot of fun. I've got an Uberti 1860 Colt army conversion that has a brass backstrap and trigger guard, chambered in .44 Spl (got another one chambered in .44 Colt; a little hard to find that archaic ammo, but I laid in a big supply when I first bought it). They shoot true. Posted by: Paco at November 23, 2025 07:46 PM (mADJX) 84

Second trip was to shoot cowboy guns.
Breaking in the Pietta and zeroing the dot on GForce lever gun (okay lever with pic rail and dot and M-LOK is only kinda sorta cowboy). Shot both .357 and .38 in both. Did not swap out the cylinder to try 9mm. Pistol will take some work on...fundamentals I guess. The sights are straight out of 1873. Has a 4.75 inch barrel. I am surprised that there was significant difference in point of impact between .357 and .38 at even 5 yards. The lever gun had zero difference in point of impact between the two calibers at 25 yards. Posted by: blaster at November 23, 2025 07:55 PM (RoO7G) 96
OK, quick question on measuring the barrel length on a revolver. Lucky Gunner says you measure back to the "breech face", which it calls the back of the cylinder.
Then it says a moment later that the cylinder gap (at the forcing cone) isn't included in the barrel length, because "You are measuring up to the face of the cylinder, but not including any parts that are beyond the cylinder, like a compensator." What the heck? To the back of the cylinder would match measuring semi-autos. Posted by: GWB at November 23, 2025 07:57 PM (bFn+/) 97

Looking up some SAA content on Youtube I came across a video of a quickdraw contest that is held in Nevada annually (not sure the vintage of the video so maybe they don't have this anymore).
They do matchups but they do not face each other. And they shoot wax bullets, which is something someone brought up last week. But again, not at each other. Posted by: blaster at November 23, 2025 08:05 PM (RoO7G) 106
Sig 320 video: Looks to me like the security guard was shoving his pistol deeper into his holster when it discharged. The holster looks like (at least to me) it was designed for a pistol with a light mounted in front of the trigger guard, means it would have an extra large opening on top.
One scenario proposed by Sig is that "stuff" can fall into holsters and then press on the trigger after the pistol has been inserted. Which raises the question, do other pistols have this problem? Posted by: Idaho Spudboy at November 23, 2025 08:07 PM (8QVSJ) 107

Posted by: nurse ratched at November 23, 2025 08:00 PM (mT+6a) I haven't seen TSA do swipes for a long time, but that doesn't mean they are not still doing them. I suspect that if an item comes up positive on a swipe it means it gets hand inspected and you get to spend some extra time in line. Posted by: blaster at November 23, 2025 08:08 PM (RoO7G) 108

I have never been a high frequency flier so this is based on a small sample and could well just be coincidence but when I used to dabble in model rocketry with my kids, I had 2 or 3 instances of getting to my destination and finding the TSA's little "Hi there, we broke into your luggage. You're welcome." notes and none since quitting model rocketry. My SWAG is that it had something to do with miniscule amounts of black power residue on my clothing. Posted by: nurse ratched at November 23, 2025 08:00 PM (mT+6a) You get a pat-down and your bags prodded a bit more. Maybe you get asked if you were shooting recently. Washing your hands would help. But not enough if they were doing a forensic search (which they're not). If it's an airport where you hand your checked luggage to the TSA guy, though, you might want to mention you went shooting just prior. And make sure nothing in that bag looks suspicious. (If guns are being checked it won't be a problem.) Posted by: GWB at November 23, 2025 08:09 PM (jqdfQ) 110

Posted by: GWB at November 23, 2025 08:02 PM (jqdfQ) The 4.75" barrel was called a "snubby" because it was the shortest factory barrel length commonly offered by Colt in the SAA's heyday. Colt did make shorter (3" and 4" barrels) models with the "Sheriffs'" and "Storekeeper" models, but these were pretty rare compared to the "gunfighter" barrel length. I'm not sure why there's a big difference in where the rounds are hitting at five yards. All I can say right now is to shoot some different bullet weights and powder loadings and see what happens. Except I shoot mine better than my P226 Legion and that kind of makes me mad. My opinion on the P320 is that there are lots of them in use - military and police as well as civilian use. There are probably enough in use, and used enough, that there are going to be pistols that are at the tolerances of specification and wear takes them over the edge. I would bet big money that the 1911 has many more deaths and injuries from "uncontrolled discharge." But that did not happen in the age of social media. Posted by: blaster at November 23, 2025 08:18 PM (RoO7G) In mid 1944, there were several mishaps with dropped S&W Victory Model (S&W Model 10) revolvers discharging. One of these killed an enlisted sailor. The USN Bureau of Ordnance and US Army Ordnance Corps investigation traced the problem to the hammer. Striking the hammer spur hard enough allowed the firing pin to hit the cartridge with enough force to discharge it. Initially the USN wanted Colt Commandos in lieu of the S&W Victory Models. But S&W rapidly designed and installed a hammer block to fix the problem by December 1944. S&W continued to supply Victory Model revolvers right up to the war's end. Just took a look at the 9mm cylinder. I had seen/read that perhaps moon clips would be required. Not the case. The holes for the bullets in the cylinder (there must be a technical name for that) for .357/.38 are the same diameter full length. The 9mm cyinder is slightly wider for the length of a 9mm case and then slightly narrower - the 9mm case catches inside there instead of the rim of the case catching on the end.

Just finished burning an Alec Bradley Prensado. Got a blood test scheduled for tomorrow afternoon, so that and a bit of fudge paired with a stout chai should lock the numbers in nicely. Best for a blessed Thanksgiving to all...

Carried a 1911 for a few years and H&K USP compact for about 20. Never had any problems. Been looking at the VP9s.
Posted by: KDKong at November 23, 2025 09:24 PM (Bc40B) I like your taste in pistols! I have a full-size USP (.40SW) and a VP9. I think the USP is the superior pistol. The VP9 is a nice striker-fired pistol, but nothing special. Maybe it is more robust than most, but it ain't the USP! Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at November 23, 2025 09:48 PM (n9ltV) 158

She’s Going to Learn’: 9-Year-Old Texas Girl Flies Through Car Window After Woman Ordered Her to Move Vehicle, Video Shows
A 25-year-old Texas woman is behind bars after authorities say she ordered a 9-year-old girl to drive her car, which crashed and landed the young child in the hospital with serious injuries. Home surveillance video footage caught the car swiftly skidding down a street in reverse with the driver’s side door open. Police say the child was flung out of the car when it suddenly crashed into a neighbor’s car. https://is.gd/5LsqWr Posted by: Anonosaurus Wrecks, Why Do the Heathen Rage? at November 23, 2025 10:05 PM (L/fGl) 163

Too late! But for posterity...
Did some side by side comparisons of the Glock 44 and the Taurus TX 22. The Taurus felt better in hand and had better balance. It also holds 16 rounds. The Glock was lighter, closer to a G19 in hand and the trigger was more crisp and produced tighter groups using the same ammo. Also did some XD45 drills. Slow fire is very accurate but going fast with a .45 makes my groups open up. But so long as the sights are lined up, the gun performs. Took the two oldest to Beaver Dam Rock Pit to shoot some things Saturday morning. They had a great time. The other people were friendly and safe. I haven't done much shooting for about ten years, but I'm trying to get back into it.
It's hard to figure out what to do for targets. I brought a flattened cardboard box, put it back together, and taped some targets to it. That worked pretty well . . . except for sighting in a new AR + red dot, since the box moved every time you hit it. I guess that makes it a reactive target? Today I made a target stand from leftover fence planks---pretty much the cheapest lumber you can get, 6' x 5.5", with rough sides. (2x4s would work too.) The base is three pieces that come apart, with holes for 1x2 posts, so I can throw it all in the little Subaru. If it works I'll share some instructions.
