Ah, the programming language Perl. It's a rich language with many extensions; you can probably find a mix of stuff that matches the way you think about coding and write your applications just the way you want.
Sweet for you. Sucks ass for the poor asshole who has to support your shit when you've lost interest in it (open source) or left the company. Of course, poor asshole will try to re-write what you left to match his/hers/its dialect of Perl so he/she/it is happy to work on it. No, I'm not a fan of the language. A guy I work with is from Atlanta. Apparently, Verizon just laid off a whole lot of technicians and engineers and replaced them with AI. Then I read that Google insanity above and the amounts of money involved with AI and begin to suspect that when the bubble pops, it's going to be a Big Bang sized BOOM.

Once you realize that many of the C-suite slots are filled with lying sociopaths whose lying hasn't hurt their success, replacing humanoid lifeforms who aren't lying sociopaths with artificial lying sociopaths looks to be a success path to said C-suite slot-holders. OTOH, there's no shortage of human lying sociopaths (C-suite or not), so maybe go the cheaper route. Posted by: Richard Cranium at November 22, 2025 05:09 AM (Aek12) 20

@24/FenelonSpoke: Skip's cable company is coming to replace his modem that he connects to the internet through.
The noon and 5 pm is a joke about how cable companies (ALL of them) can never seem to give you a fixed time for your appointment, forcing you to take a half or even a full day off because of this, seriously inconveniencing the working customer. And the AI part is because every company is trying to replace its workers with an AI. Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at November 22, 2025 05:23 AM (O7YUW) 28

I asked someone about Perl last week. He said peole had switched to Python. I took a self directed class on it and let the sys admin I worked with know about it. Company I was at used MS Access and they pushed the program beyond what it was designed for. So sys admin wrote a Perl script to back up the database every half hour. That worked till they hired a real IT director, who replaced it with both Oracle and Sybase databases. Fun times.

Homer, Odyssey 9.395-408 (the Cyclops Polyphemus): [395] "Terribly then did he cry aloud, and the rock rang around; and we, seized with terror, shrank back, while he wrenched from his eye the stake, all befouled with blood, and flung it from him, wildly waving his arms. Then he called aloud to the Cyclopes, who dwelt round about him in caves among the windy heights, and they heard his cry and came thronging from every side, and standing around the cave asked him what ailed him: `What so sore distress is thine, Polyphemus, that thou criest out thus through the immortal night, and makest us sleepless? Can it be that some mortal man is driving off thy flocks against thy will, or slaying thee thyself by guile or by might?’ [408] “Then from out the cave the mighty Polyphemus answered them: `My friends, it is Noman that is slaying me by guile and not by force.’ https://www.theoi.com/Text/HomerOdyssey9.html Posted by: m at November 22, 2025 06:23 AM (RuTUS) Posted by: m at November 22, 2025 06:24 AM (RuTUS) 66

Odysseus had earlier identified himself to the Cyclops Polyphemus as "Noman," in anticipation of this act of tricking the Cyclops Polyphemus into shouting out just this very phrase: "Noman is slaying me!" so that the other Cyclopes would not come to save him. [360] “So he spoke, and again I handed him the flaming wine. Thrice I brought and gave it him, and thrice he drained it in his folly. But when the wine had stolen about the wits of the Cyclops, then I spoke to him with gentle words: `Cyclops, thou askest me of my glorious name, and I will tell it thee; and do thou give me a stranger's gift, even as thou didst promise. Noman is my name, Noman do they call me—my mother and my father, and all my comrades as well.’ “ Posted by: m at November 22, 2025 06:39 AM (RuTUS) 79

In the meantime, a very nice 2 milr road course, Pittsburgh International Speedway, suddenly closed down. It was popular and widely respected in the racing community. Why? Well, the local town changed something in the zoning. It allowed data centers to be built. Either the owners of the racetrack got an offer they didn't (or couldn't) refuse, or the new zoning regs shut the track down. Noise or whatever. Either way, a new data center will be built there. It will provide jobs of course but you don't need thousands to run a modern data center. Probably don't need a 100. Or 10. Also, I'm guessing H1-b's will fill the employment. No locals or even anybody in the region will be hired. I'm awfully doom and gloom this morning. Sorry.

My last test, I submitted a couple of obscure problems from Goldstein's Classical Mechanics, considered to be the gold standard of graduate physics texts. The two problems were one I was familar with and they were both hard. After the preliminary analysis it went to the usual redit, etc sites looking to see if a similar problem had been covered there. It was not able to. Then it went on to solve both problems correctly. I told a guy I have worked closely with for over 40 years, probably the best engineer I have even known, about this ands he said, "I'm glad I retired". Mostly need a rotation of site engineers to troubleshoot and deal with hardware problems (e.g. cooling, power, etc.) the other gigs are basically monkeys that replace drives and boards as they go down. Need security goons, and handy-men to keep the toilets flushing. Then, of course, admin staff. For a low end DC, maybe 10-20 people. For a largeTier III , maybe 20-50. Well, off to bed daywalkers. I've been listening to Cole Chaney a lot lately. A reletive newcomer in the Appalachia/bluegrass music scene. He's very very good.

161 Added - I forgot to mention that your musing on the Radeon situation was also helpful. I went with a RX 9070 16GB (Powercolor, Hellhound) that can undervolt it, keep the fans from not turning on Silent and chew less power. The Black Friday deals on that were way better than 5070/5060 and I get 1.5x performance for 80% less price. It was a good tradeoff.
I think that's really what it ends up being about is a frank analysis of the tradeoffs, what your budget can do and going from there. I value silence and speed - hard combo to execute. Posted by: SkinnerVic at November 22, 2025 08:09 AM (JIGPW) 175
Good morning Horde, thx Pixy.
I've been keeping the Horde UTD on a trial occurring about a mile from me in county court. A state trooper did a pit stop on a driver who fled a stop on the NYS Thruway. Unfortunately an 11 yr old girl was killed. The NYS AG James office prosecuted the trooper. Not guilty on murder , reckless endangerment (6 counts) , hung jury on manslaughter. Retrial to be scheduled. A couple of protests with more cops present than protesters. However this is a very leftist area and looking at people posting this will grow. Oh, trooper white , driver and daughter black Posted by: Smell the Glove at November 22, 2025 08:16 AM (bfwj/) 176
@132 Puddleglum, sorry to hear about the end of the "new" track at BeaveRun. Sadly, race courses count in the evolution of real estate development alongside junk yards and drive-in theaters: a way to generate a little revenue from some cleared field before they can be hustled on into malls and subdivisions.
I don't know any more somber reading than the photo histories of lost race tracks. Posted by: Way, Way Downriver at November 22, 2025 08:19 AM (zdLoL) 177
At one job I wrote perl exclusively for a lot of pre and post processing engineering analysis tasks. Other people starting adopting all of it into their workflow too. Then I changed jobs, worked somewhere else and came back fifteen years later. They were still using it. They had changed from hp-unix to linux, had a different file server architecture. Changes everywhere, but we’re still clanking along with 15yo scripts. And they did that by stapling ugly bash onto the perl. They understood none of the perl, and understood shell scripting just enough to be dangerous, sometimes very dangerous. I trust perl for myself, but not other people.

157 I've been investigating Grok specifically over the last couple of months.
My last test, I submitted a couple of obscure problems from Goldstein's Classical Mechanics, considered to be the gold standard of graduate physics texts. Then it went on to solve both problems correctly. Posted by: pawn at November 22, 2025 07:53 AM You and everybody else who has ever taken that course submits the same problems. It didn't solve jack. It was either told the answers to the problems by the programmers because people like you will be impressed by the fact that it has an answer, or there's a cheat site for that book that has the answers that it found on an Internet search. It's a synthetic test with a known and findable answer. that makes it an incredibly poor choice as a test of intelligence. Ask it dumb questions that nobody has thought of. That's what I do, and I get basically random unhelpful crap. That's why I'm not disappointed that I'm not able to retire. Posted by: Cybersmythe at November 22, 2025 08:30 AM (VmDLh) 179
I am disappointed that I am not able to retire for a set of wholly different reasons.

I can easily double my google usage every 6 months. Zero raised to a very large exponent is still zero. Trust me on that math thing. I'm old and went to school in the long long ago when it was taught.

I presented the problems completely out of context. It solved the first problem presented in the chapter on Lagrangians using brute force and then redid it with Lagrangians when I prompted it.
Sorry to disturb your worldview. The only cheat stuff for Goldstein is in Chinese. I don't think many people on the whole have actually solved these exact problems let alone published the solutions. Goldstein has fallen out of favor because it is old and just too hard. Please tell me, given the resources you have what tests you would employ and try them out and see, if you are interested otherwise your pedestrian scoffing is very hollow. Or just continue to regurgitate what ever is fashionable in your peer group. Presently, I am having read and analyze electrical schematics. Posted by: pawn at November 22, 2025 10:54 AM (sPsWv) 182

That's just the thing. The problem IS the context. You think that because you had difficulty with the problem that being able to give a solution is a sign of extreme intelligence. It is not. It is a sign that you gave it what is, for it, an extremely easy problem. I'm not giving it sample problems, obscure or otherwise. (You're about the tenth person I've seen use Goldstein's Dynamics as a source of test material.) Instead, I'm trying to accomplish things. I give it questions like "How do I block a given MAC address from using IPv6 to access the internet using a OpnSense Firewall?" And it gives me an answer. Which is wrong. (There is no general way with OpnSense, or so I've come to find out.) I also give prompts like "write a program in Python3 using the Polygon API that will give the profitability of a specified company over the last 10 years." Same result. The problem with AI is that it knows the answers to problems that people have talked about, but nothing else. So, yes, keep using synthetic benchmarks with known answers, and you're going to be impressed. I keep trying to do actual work with it, and I'm not.
I'm not hiding from AI, I'm being puzzled by people like you who are bamboozled by it. My worldview is actually in better shape than yours. Posted by: Cybersmythe at November 22, 2025 11:28 AM (VmDLh) 185
Not bamboozeled. Intrigued.
The fact that it solved the first problem completely out of context that it was asked originally negates much of what you have said. Was not aware that Goldstein was such a benchmark. Maybe ask it to solve a problem with a known solution using another completely unsuitable method that will work. The important part is that there is a solution. Asking something a question when there may be no answer tells you nothing logically. Your a creative type, what kind of tests can you think of that could satisfy you, if indeed you can be satisfied? Posted by: pawn at November 22, 2025 12:05 PM (sPsWv) 186
I am much like you in what I do. I figure out solutions to problems that other people can not or will not, in the real world.
I'm interested that you have engaged others on this subject. I have not. Were they satisfied with your explanation? Posted by: pawn at November 22, 2025 12:10 PM (sPsWv) 187
