Good morning from the Adirondacks, where the temps have more bounce than a trampoline. This bounce is upward, into the 50s for the week. I think it was a touch prescient when I compared Windows 11 to fellating rotten maggot penis earlier. That may have been mild. Between AI and Microsoft the 'net may be inhabitable for a time. Thus may all effort from you result in maximal benefit to you and egregious heartburn for the leftwit fungi. Some semblance of normality should prevail. Evening and morning on this Consummation-Devoutly-to-be-Wished day, Friday! Whassup, folken?
I am up and awake (for certain values of "awake") because a certain black cat once known as The Evil Black Kitten of War and Pestilence wants to reclaim his title. And I would bet large sums of money that these movements are supported by folks with government union jobs, where the wage structure is based off of minimum wage. >> Uranus is the planet that essentially rolls around the Sun on its side, right? It has an inclination of close to 90 degrees?
Yes, indeed. Axial tilt (obliquity) is about 98 degrees. Meaning it's a slightly upside down, north pole point below the orbital plane. Even stranger, there is big difference between the magnetic axis and the axis of rotation. The dipole axis is tilted 59 degrees relative to the rotational axis. As Uranus rotates, the dipole whips around with each revolution. Oh, "obliquity" is the term for the axial tilt, relative to the planet's orbital plane. "Inclination" refers to the tilt of the orbital plane itself relative to some reference plane. For observational convenience that reference plane is usually the ecliptic. Uranus' inclination is small, about 0.8 degrees to the ecliptic. So Uranus stays very close to the ecliptic over its entire orbit. For other purposes, like moons of planet or satellites, the reference plane will be the equatorial plane of the planet, although the tilt of the plane relative to the ecliptic can be useful as well. For example, the ISS has an inclination of about 52 degrees. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at November 21, 2025 06:03 AM (w6EFb) 70

I used to be neutral about the whole LLM thing. I figured it would be annoyingly over-hyped for a bit and then go away, and at least it would spur on nuclear power development.
Now I see that it's destroying any remaining basis for consistent common knowledge, and doing so faster than I would've believed. And the nuclear power is in small units, for the oligarchs and the privileged corporations, not for people like us. At this point I'd be shocked if we see any of those benefits flow down. More likely we'll just wind up paying for them via tax subsidies and forced industry costs of "AI". Posted by: Part-time Thinker at November 21, 2025 06:08 AM (Xz6B4) 74

During the George W. Bush administration, federal policy emphasized accountability for public schools. Schools that saw poor performance on standardized tests received increased funding at first, but if scores still didn’t improve, they had their funding pulled. @81/FenelonSpoke: Yeah, I'm around. I've been having challenging days with the kids too. A few days are okay, but some of them are definitely "going rodeo". It's worse towards the end of the week. I just try to take it one day at a time and write up the students who need to be written up (often a verbal warning is enough.)
They finally removed one of the problem children from my bus for a few days. Not sure how long that will be, but knowing this kid, it may be a while. He refuses to obey ANY authority figure. I'm sure the princpal was real impressed when he pulled the kid into his office. All I can say is all the years of being a stern father (with a big scary presence) are now paying off. Tell your husband to enjoy the couple of days off, I'm sure he's more than earned them. Posted by: Grumpy and Recalcitrant at November 21, 2025 06:25 AM (O7YUW) 103

Watching old movie films I see no doors with security locks on the doors at a campus. When I was in college at NYU most buildings were open. Now you can't trust anyone not to get in the buildings and raise havoc. Or the homeless setting up a home in the empty rooms. Where I worked before retirement, you could be locked out of any building at a flip of a computer switch. Use to be able just to show a pass and walk right in. No more, most companies are locked up tighter than a drum with those steel trunstyles. No click, no entry.

More and more that's looking like my next move. I'd love any advice, pointers, hardware recs kind of thing. I'm thinking of running Ubuntu on a yet to be purchased laptop. Of course as soon as I post this ... JJS will go live. LOL Posted by: YellowBird at November 21, 2025 07:07 AM (MEbkQ) Best way to do it is to just do it. Grab an old piece of hardware such as an old laptop (5-8 years old), grab a USB thumbdrive, make a booktable USB version of Linux Mint (as one possible example that is Ubuntu/Debian based and is user friendly), then, using boot options, boot from USB into Linux Mint. Spend some hours poking around. You don't need high-spec hardware to get started. Using older hardware is probably preferred for a new user, since all drivers and bugs would have been worked out, most likely. Typically, those bootable USB or live versions have the option to install straight from the live session. Posted by: Comrade Flounder, Disinformation Demon at November 21, 2025 07:15 AM (dK+Kv) 175

Well that took long enough. Now how about prosecuting the people that accepted the donations. Posted by: fd at November 21, 2025 07:21 AM (vFG9F) 180

Go to https://alternativeto.net/ and find a Linux-compatible option. If you have the ability to run VMs, try different VMs to determine your preferred distro and what settings you will need to change. Preparation is key. Linux isn’t safe either. Linus Torvalds himself has now expressed support for gay race communism and making everyone trans. I’m sure a quality decline (beyond that caused already by Ubuntu rewriting everything in Rust, the first transgender programming language) is coming.
