Baby Rhino Hero Cafe

autumninvavarianalps.jpg
Bavarian Alps in autumn
Kilian Schonberger/@Schoenberger_K

Mama chimp whoops her rambunctious son.

Wild dog-- or wolf? -- plays the I'm-touching-you-game with his brother, who spergs out about it.

Compilation of ducks being awesome.

Birds being helpful and/or copycats.

You don't want no trouble from this feisty kitten.

And you don't want no smoke with this one, either.

Beaver carrying a baby. No, I mean the rodent.

The bird is in. Now they're invincible.

Mother horse runs with her baby.

Oldie but a goodie: Polite penguin waits for the road to clear.

Come along little doggie!

Good shanks on this filly.

A wolf problem, you say? Nay, a wolf opportunity.

Perpetual motion meow-chine. That was terrible. Kill me now.

Cat pursuit:

33 One of Mao Zedong's henchman, a trusted soldier from the time of the Long March, emerged in the 1960s as the director of a “social engineering” program that, although overshadowed by the horrors of the Great Leap Forward, nonetheless led to an epic destruction of life. The Great Waddle Backward was a policy of species cleansing carried out by the ominously-named Peng Wing Suk that resulted in the near extinction of penguins in China. Although penguins are naturally cautious and clever, this monster was so cunning, he was able to attract the penguin population to areas where they could be concentrated and slaughtered en masse in one of history's ghastliest episodes of Spheniscidacide. His craftiness was so great, in fact, that he acquired a nickname that has been anglicized as Peng Wing Fox – which bears an odd similarity to the nickname of an author of anti-penguin comments on this blog.

83 I have good news...
Last year we got a quarter of beef from my cousin. She has a small beef cattle operation. Best beef we've had in years. Ordered another quarter last week and it went to be processed Tuesday. The steer weighed in at 1303 lbs live weight.

Last year the quarter worked out to 352 lbs live weight at a cost of $774.40. That doesn't include processing.

This year the quarter works out to 325.75 lbs live weight with cost of $781.80. Again that doesn't include processing.

So the price is around $7 more for 25#s less. I thought it would be a lot higher than that.

Hopefully the processing fees won't have increased much. Last year it was around $250.

We were fortunate to get that quarter. Cousin lost a big steer a few weeks ago. One of the bigger ones that was just a few weeks from going to processing. Lost about $4000 on that one steer. She didn't say what happened to him or why he died. Just a huge loss for a small operation.

Uranus' magnitude will be a smidge under 6 tonight. It would technically be visible to the nekkid eye (good, less than 29 yr old eyes) under dark sky conditions.

You can see it with good binoculars, under clear skies, provided it's dark enough.

Posted by: Duncanthrax

(looks it up) Ars Technica again.
Looks like Zork fell under the Activision umbrella (I think I knew that), which MS bought in 2022 (I probably knew that too). The code was uploaded to github already in 2019 (which I did not know).
What I did know: Zork and all Infocom games were done on the Z-machine. This has been open all through the 1990s. The "Inform" engine and "Glulx" are built upon that. Nobody had any copyrights to the Z-machine.
All we're really seeing here is the source code, which has been a dead letter, easily decompiled for decades.
kudos to Microsoft for at least not screwing over hobbyists I guess, which they likely had no right to do in the first place.

The Zork intellectual property is something else again, like any fiction work would be. Microsoft gets to keep that, which they paid for, so why not. (I still want my Zork Inquisitor sequel.)

And since it happened after V1, the crew had to take off since there was not enough runway left to stop.

156 This MD-11 had like 93,000 hours and over 21,000 cycles. The left pylon spherical bearings had been serviced and such this past October. But what kind of detailed inspection happened then?

Going back in time, there were two elderly 707s that both had pylon attachment points fail causing the engine to fall off.

The recommended inspection was only for the outside of the pylon attachment which meant in the first case in Europe the corrosion merrily ate away on the inside so #3 cheerfully fell off during turbulence and since it was lonely it also took #4 with it. Amazingly the flight crew managed to land that 707.

The fitting was replaced by a stronger fitting.

108 That is truly horrifying to see.

The UPS MD-11 just starting to take off, nose lifting up after V1, and all the while the left-wing engine is breaking free, engine rotating upwards, catching fire, and then over the fuselage to fall on the right side of the runway. And since it happened after V1, the crew had to take off since there was not enough runway left to stop.

177 Let's not conflate this MD-11 pylon failure with the United Airlines DC-10 pylon failure.

The DC-10 crash was nasty. This plane had a camera mounted in the tail, so the passengers saw the crash. When the engine separated it also took out hydraulics and knocked out the Captain's instruments since they were powered by that engine. Because of the hydraulic failure, some of the leading edge slats on that wing retracted which created asymmetrical lift.

My late first husband was a mechanic for a small cargo airline that ran out of the airport next to Purdue University in Lafayette Indiana. One of the run ways there had a hill? ridge? Not sure what to call it, it was for noise reduction. It was on the approach to the landing runway. Plane came in at night in fog. They were too low and crammed in to that hill/ridge. 3 crew members dead. R had to go out there the next morning because a mechanic had to be present when the FAA people got there. And he was the last mechanic who did maintenance on that plane. He said it was the absolute worst thing he ever had to do in that job. Flight logs, maintenance logs, flight recorder, he had to pull everything for them while knowing that 3 men he knew and worked with were just gone because of weather and a stupid runway approach.
They bulldozed that ridge and told the university to shut the fuck up about noise reduction.

Catholics are raised with the concept of purgatory, and I don't know how it works, but believe something must happen.

In order to be restored with God, whatever those sins are, our faults and failings (which we all have) must be burned away somehow. So the purity of our soul can live in that "place," heaven.

304 Hi all! First thing I see after a long crappy day is about penis enlargement so figure it’s as good a time is any to talk about the polite penguin (hi Dunc!).
You see, he is not being polite. He’s just waiting for all the assholes to get out of his way. They have a route, and schedule, to follow - from sea (fish/food) to nest (hungry babies).
If anything is on their routes they wait. They don’t have a mental map to go around you; they just wait.
Sometimes this means he/she is late to feed the baby and, subsequently, late to go back to the sea to repeat the process. Then the baby dies.
So it’s you who has to be polite and wait for the penguin to cross the pass.
The End.

344 The “Nuremburg Code” is not part of US law. Title 18 USC does prohibit forcing people to participate in experimental medical trials.

What I always thought was strange, was why an Insurance co. would pay out life insurance claims. If the WuHan lung rot killed a policy holder, they should have declined payment, on the basis “we don’t pay out on deaths resulting from biological weapons”

In the same way, if the vaccine killed people, “we don’t pay claims for death or injury resulting from experimental drugs”. Either stance is perfectly reasonable. The rot goes very deep indeed.

345 Not that I'm disagreeing but that's sad.

Small self-censorship leads to larger self-censorship.

See that happening with islamic shari'a takeovers in US cities. A very tiny few, a 'happy few', in power want to state the obvious.

It's more about wording. People at work generally don't have to worry that I'm not speaking my mind.

So it's more about not being "that" guy, in that it seems like I'm pushing an agenda, for those who may not be ready to hear it. But just today I had a discussion with someone about the shot, and said something to the effect that it seems most of the world has come to its senses about it, and it's not being forced on anyone anymore.

Unless a pit maneuver is illegal, the officer did nothing wrong. Someone died as a result of the father committing a crime. Usually there is a homicide charge when that happens Even if the person killed was a fellow criminal.

US black letter federal law prohibits forcing participation in experimental drugs. It even prohibits coercion. “We’re not forcing you to take it, you can quit your job and go find another” was just evil.

They were not FDA approved until fairly late in the game. ”Approved” for Emergency experimental use is not the same as “Approved”. Ordinarily vaccines take 8 to 12 years, and only about 20% make the cut.
