ICE Targets Charlotte, NC for Illegal Alien Arrests; Thirty Thousand Students In Public Schools Stay Home

Does this mean that around 30,000 of Charlotte's public school students are illegals or children of illegals? I think it does. I did not hear of any leftist campaign to Keep Your Kids Home as a protest. This was organic.

Note the number claimed earlier was 20,000, but it appears to be 30,000.

Almost 20% of the school population appears to be illegal alien children.

All paid for by American taxpayers.

On Monday, Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools saw a tremendous number of absences, nearly 20% of students, shortly after ICE showed up in town and illegal migrant communities became afraid of going out in public.

Nearby district, Wake County, told illegals that it will have teachers deliver Zoom lessons so that they can stay home to evade ICE.

Charlotte has 900,000 residents, and more than 150,000 are foreign nationals, which comes out to roughly one in six people.
When a city carries numbers like that, it shows up everywhere. Uptown murders are up 200 percent. Aggravated assaults with knives or guns climbed from 86 to 111 year over year. Strong-arm robberies went from 26 to 31 in the same period. Families feel the strain in housing, in classrooms, and in basic public safety.
That is the environment @CBP walked into because the scale of the population shift and the rise in violent crime have outpaced what local agencies can handle on their own.
A city cannot function when the pressure points stack up like this. Charlotte has to put the safety of its residents first or the numbers will keep getting worse, no matter who pretends otherwise.

One illegal injured an officer by "weaponizing his car." I guess a new euphemism for "running down a cop" has dropped.

One person was injured after a vehicle was used to attack Department of Homeland Security agents performing a crackdown on illegal immigrants in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Sunday.
"his afternoon in Charlotte near University City, a United States citizen weaponized his vehicle, driving a large van at law enforcement while they were conducting an operation," DHS posted on X.

The officer is reported to be in stable and culturally-enriched condition.

Democrat Roy Cooper -- formerly a governor, now running for Senate -- is complaining about the 1,400 hardened criminals being arrested.

Criminals, DHS points out, that he he himself has previously shielded from deportation.

The Department of Homeland Security issued an unusually sharp and highly public rebuke of U.S. Senate candidate and former North Carolina Democratic Governor Roy Cooper after he criticized federal immigration enforcement operations in Charlotte. Cooper wrote on social media that while he supports using federal resources to deport violent offenders, he opposes "randomly sweeping up people based on what they look like," warning that such tactics could leave dangerous criminals at large while harming families and the economy.
DHS immediately fired back, using its official X account to highlight the case of Jordan Renato Castillo-Chavez, a Costa Rican national whom North Carolina authorities had previously declined to transfer to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). DHS described Castillo-Chavez as a "criminal illegal alien" with a record that includes indecent liberties with a child, first-degree sexual exploitation of a minor, and solicitation of a child via computer. The agency's message to Cooper was pointed: "North Carolina refused to hand him over to ICE."

Yes. It seems a vast majority of the construction projects started around the US is simply to give the illegals jobs. Jobs they can do because the only job provided by the Mexican government is pouring concrete. Visualized by the construction in Mexico's bigger cities that have building being constructed next to vacant buildings because there aren't enough businesses to fill the buildings they already have.

I strongly suspect that the housing crisis, the supply side, has been overblown. Builders have been overbuilding for years. Lenar started cutting into its margins instead of slowing down in the face of inflation over the last few years.

What the main driver has been was 16 million new people imported from 2021 to 2024 plus their subsidies from governments at all levels eating up both rents and mortgage spaces (yes,...there are programs to help illegals get mortgages).

Fixing immigration is going to fix a lot of what's wrong in current day America.

19 I was in NC a few weeks ago. Flew into Charlotte and then drove around the Asheville area. I was shocked at how many obvious illegals there were, even in the more rural areas. The supermarkets were crawling with them, and so much of the goods and signage was in Spanish.

I expect to see this shit in big blue cities. I didn't expect to see it in rural reddish areas. Same thing in South Carolina.

I think probably 1/4 to 1/3 of the entire population of the country is now illegal. Not joking.

And schools are a big part of this. I have heard stories that in SoCal people from the school district went to Asia and talked up immigration to their school district, and the people came. The didn't want to lose their jobs with the falling enrollment.

Having been in real estate, both as a lawyer to investors and an investor myself, a big part of the problem with real estate development (especially on the larger scales) is that you are making decisions now for a project that won't open for at least five years. It takes that long to go from idea to plans to endless approvals to building to selling. Anything can -- and does -- change in those five years.

My wife taught in a school like that and spoke English to the kids. The young ones pick up English quickly, and the good principals encourage the teachers to speak English to the kids bc obviously it will help them. The lazy teachers just respond in Spanish.

Speaking with the parents is next to impossible, but very very few parents show up for anything other than picking up their kids. They don't care -- it's just "free" daycare to them.

I ran the demographic numbers on this many years ago. With births, legal immigration, amnesty, etc. I think I got a number between 225 and 250 million "legitimate" citizens. That was probably 10 years go, so a few more now. Of course, many illegals have kids and those are now citizens so you end up with something higher. That number is very difficult to determine since I could find no way to see how many people born are only citizens due to the birthright citizenship lie.

Most of construction is grunt work that can be done by almost anyone. Even the more skilled work can be learned pretty fast. If you're motivated, you can go from demolition clean-up (pure grunt) to complex electrical installation in a few years.

Not sure since I've just driven it, not lived near it. Maybe a MDer knows but I thought there were 3 highway ways to get from north to south on 95...and taking out the bridge took out one and made the port less useful for goods coming in/out. They are making do with 2, which increases all traffic and does make it easier to truly shut down N/S through MD if someone was so inclined...

We're seeing that now, I think. There's a few companies that I think are way overvalued based on pure AI hype, and I expect them to fall hard. But overall, my estimate -- which is really pulling a gut feeling out of my ass -- is that the overall indexes are maybe 3-5% overvalued with AI hype. I think we've already shaved off 1-2% of that.

My old company, small software company, set up a team to use AI as a major tool in development.

After a year, they had literally nothing. No tools at all, that would do what was originally intended.

"Write me code that does this specific thing. Okay, now I'm going to test this code to make sure it works," is one thing. "Copilot, build me a codebase for a brand new product" is something else.

The latter requires a dreamer and nothing else. The former requires engineers.

In the case of Cloudfare, it was something simple--the file that composed of the botnet protection portion of their services was larger than the allowed file size. So when the new file was sent across the servers, it borked them which then took down client websites across the world using that protection.

Similar to Crowdstrike outage which did something similar with its virus definition files.

Configuration error, not coding. And in both cases rolling back to the older files caused the servers to function again.

The problem is that, to get from one end of the bay to the other, from the south side to the east side (and vice-versa), the bridge was the shortest distance between those two points. Now it isn't, due to a sudden, critical failure to exist. The alternatives are to go through the I95 tunnel, the I895 tunnel, or travel through the city of Baltimore (the crack tunnel). Those options existed before. But now they're the only options, which makes traffic even worse during rush hours.

Too many companies are racing to be THE AI company and unwisely spending massive amounts on acquiring depreciating chips and machines by outbidding their competitors. Similar to the Web 1.0 collapse where the logistics for home delivery for everything under the sun simply did not exist in a way to make the companies profitable.

What is misleading called AI is actually something called machine learning and it has been around awhile (remember Watson and Chess games against humans). So worthy now for niche areas--animation, improving error fixing on visual media, video generation, language translation, and rote summarization of complicated piles of information if a person has the personal knowledge how to correct any errors.

It is not something to bet the farm on when errors/hallucinations are a massive issue so AI driven cars, medicine, law, are much farther away.

Thanks. Perhaps a ferry service could be set up to take part of the load? Maybe just for large trucks, and require that large trucks use it, and not take alternate routes? Trucks waiting in the lot for a ferry are not on the road choking up traffic, and the drivers are getting paid to sit there.

Nobody in Mexico is insisting that everyone needs to go to college, and many couldn't afford it anyway, so people learn trades, often generationally. It used to be the same here, but people got obsessed with college educations.

College is where a lot of communist indoctrination takes place, so I think there was a certain amount of intentional push towards college instead of trades, but my parents were very proud that I went to college; it was also definitely considered a step up in life.

I think PDT has fast tracked the opening and building of Nuclear Power Plants. Bezos is building 13 (did I dream this?) small one's in Washington, Three Mile Island is being re-opened.

There is a high probability, considering who is doing it (people like Musk) and the money poured into it that in a few years we will have easily built small reactors anywhere.
