  • So, Cloudflare. (Cloudflare)

Cloudflare carries something like 20% of the world's web traffic, but for a few hours late last night (my time) or early yesterday morning (US time) it wasn't carrying much of anything, because it stopped working.

    Six times.

Not a DNS problem like the recent outages at Azure and Amazon, but a fumbled configuration file change like that massive Crowdstrike outage sixteen months ago.

  • And it's going to keep happening, so buckle up. (The Verge) (archive site)

I run traditional unshared physical servers at a smaller datacenter, not bound to any of the major players. On the one hand, a few years ago that datacenter had a fire and while the fire didn't cause any damage, the same could not be said for the sprinkler system mandated by local fire codes. (Yes, a sprinkler system. In a datacenter.)

On the other hand, not one of these big global outages have affected us.

11 I have an automated trading system for various securities and I've been doing "paper" trading in bitcoin for more than a year. (Paper meaning it's using fake money and not really trading anything as a kind of a live test.) It works pretty well, and even on the price drop I'm still up more than 100%, compared to when bitcoin was last about this price.

Or, you know, I would be if I was doing actual trading.

33 Another cold morning here at Stately Poppins Manor. The temperatures are supposed to rise starting tomorrow, but who really knows? I'm thinking that, with my hatred of winter and the current political scene, a signing off from AoS for the next 3-4 months except for Christmas wishes would be a good thing. It's only going to get worse from here.

What do the Democrats have in mind for Hegseth or Trump to do?

As I have mentioned many times, my vote for Trump was not for economic security, border security or anything else except sheer, unadulterated revenge. Which I have not had.

(what's 'revenge,' you ask? Oh, let's start with the majority of Democrat criminals who are walking around guilty as sin and free as a bird, for starters)

But then, I have never had what I truly want in this life, so Trump is just one more of my life's disappointments.

Anyway, lots of work to do this morning. Feh.

Here's the thing... not only is what they're saying NOT treason, it's absolutely correct. Members of the military (and possibly intelligence services) get training on this, or did when I was in.

You cannot be required to obey an unlawful order. You are actually required to refuse an unlawful order. The trick is knowing what orders are unlawful. Get that wrong, in either direction, and you're screwed.

Now, these Congressional asshats are expecting some military folks to get that answer wrong, and they'll be punished for it, but the jackasses stirring the pot are on legal footing.

1. They expect them to overreact, just like commentators are.
2. They expect some folks in the military to play "brave resister", get hammered for it, and use that as a political issue.

It is all, and entirely, another op designed to split the country.

48 Configuration changes in the production environment *shouldn't* break things. That's why you have a parallel staging environment, which should look just like production but doesn't directly do production work. The idea being that you test the changes that you want to do in production in the staging environment first; if staging breaks, don't do that in production.

But...production is big and expensive, but customers use it and give us money to do so. Staging sits around and costs as much as production, but nobody's paying us for it. Solution? Well, there are few.

If you're big enough, there's the "fuck you" solution. Oh, we were broke for a while? Fuck you. It'll cost you more to move to some other provider of my service than for you to placate your customers.

If you aren't that big, you scale down staging and hope that's good enough. Sometimes it isn't.

There are more, but comments can be only so long.

The military deals with a few cases of this every year. Usually low rank people. Depending on the details, they normally get a Bad Conduct Discharge. Sometimes they go to prison.

I'm guessing that the folks in the video are encouraging officers, and preferably senior officers, to play the "I know the law" game. It won't work out well for them.

There have already been senior officers relieved of duty over them deciding that Trump isn't THEIR President. 77 Evening and morning, late toilers and early risers respectively! A new Woden's Day is about to dawn here (well, in about an hour and fifteen minutes it will). Howz alla yez?

I dreamed just now that I was hiking in a national park, one of the Western dry ones, with a female friend (probably Linda). Suddenly I was bitten by a centipede -- a pale gray thing that had looked just like the rock it was on. Thing was a foot long! And it bit me not on the leg, as you'd expect, but *jumped* somehow to bite me on the right arm below the elbow. It hung on, too, and Linda had to pull it loose.

I was bleeding, so we crossed the street -- apparently this park was right in town -- to the first aid station. It was getting dark and the nurse and doctor were about to go home (?), but sprang into action when they saw my blood. I was asking if I would need an antivenin shot, and the doctor was saying yes, and are you allergic to anything?, when I woke up.

82 The Furry Thugs both slept with me at points during the night as I woke and slid back into sleep. Dagny was gone from the bed when I finally rose, and the Black One had to race ahead of me into the kitchen and back ahead of me to the bathroom, then out here again.

Dagny is sprawled on a dining chair. No doubt she wonders why Stirling expends so much energy to so little purpose. After all, she gets the same food and petting and play with far less rushing about.

You are of course right in this, but at the company I work at staging means real architecture, real code, not real data. No matter how hard you try to test something in that environment you can't reliably produce real data or real data volume.

Actually processing all real data twice would be cost prohibitive so we effectively end up testing in prod... bad things will happen. I am but one voice in the wind.

We have some stuff in the system I work on which tests some aspects in production. It's not customer facing, which limits downsides, but it's a PITA when something breaks. Still the cost/effort of setting up an entire parallel system to test every source change before rolling it out would be crazy.

People have manufactured an idea that the government has a list of the rich/powerful who were fucking 8 year olds but it likely isn't true. Still... EVERYONE knows it. So, when the files are released, and they don't contain that, millions will believe it's all still being covered up.

True point (we insert a subset of prod data into our staging, which *isn't* a mirror of production), but a configuration change that breaks production _should_ have broken staging.

114 Just watched one of the classic Max Fleischer Superman short cartoons on Movies! They are justly acclaimed. Beautifully drawn with fantastically well-done backdrops, they show Superman at his best, battling a science-fictional enemy: a guy who looks remarkably like actor Zachary Scott and who has created a crew of giant robots to commit robberies for him. The motion of bodies in space, the flow of Superman's cape, the shape of his fedora as Clark Kent, all amazing.

Funny how some of the very best iterations of both Superman and Batman came from animation.

In a word - yes.

I don't have time to expand on it, but the left will be happy, the vast majority of the GOP will be happy, the MFM will be happy, the 'conservative' media will call for dialing down the temperature and the hardcore Trump supporters will wait in vain for someone to pick up the torch and cry havoc.

Imagine Lincoln being assassinated before the war broke out. People north and south would sigh in relief that the can had been kicked down the road.

Probably worth mentioning that I have disobeyed an unlawful order before.

I was given it, I consulted a JAG, he sent an email to the CO’s JAG, and it was revoked.

If they don’t let you check, or rain hell on you for doing so, call the IG.

But unlawful orders are VERY rare.

125 "Still the cost/effort of setting up an entire parallel system to test every source change before rolling it out would be crazy."

Well, if you want to automate releases via CI/CD, that's what you gotta do.

Where I work used to have a startup culture; deploy at 0-dark-thirty, test, rollback if the tests fail. If it fails the next day, rollback ASAP. Impact to customers is minimal and you release stuff fairly quickly.

We were bought by a company that loves process so much that the process smells like jism. Said company, however, won't pay for staging to look like production and the people who greenlight releases only sniff the documentation around the release to see if it smells like enough ejaculate is on it.

Yeah, it's all about trade-offs and what you should have might be too expensive to actually have; I get that (I like the company to have enough money to pay me, after all). But, there are cost savings to be had by reducing useless process, which never seems to happen.

"over and out" means you are babbling a little longer on the air, giving whoever might be direction finding your location a better chance to find your radio, which won't be that far from your ass.

164 Oh, I've been there.

I worked at a company in an office tower (the old Alcatel, now Avaya, building in Denver). The guy who managed the building was total dumbass and yuuuuge Patriots fan, BIRM.

I told this guy - several times, no less than five times over the course of a couple years - "this building's HVAC is running at significant negative pressure, and it's going to cause a problem for you eventually."

Eventually happened one day when we had a brutal cold snap, the HVAC sucked enough very cold air into the elevator shafts/utility trunk, froze the sprinkler system up, and every sprinkler in the building started spewing. Including in our server room.

We had a bunch of software engineers spend a day running a bucket brigade in there.

This doofus tried *ordering us out* for "safety." We just laughed in his face and told him to get fucked. We weren't about to let our servers get ruined to assuage the officious ego of the retard who flooded the building because he was to busy beating off to Tom Brady to listen to reason and do his job.

Reminds me of my second favorite WKRP In Cincinnati episode (after the classic Thanksgiving "flying turkeys" one):

The DJs have a highway patrol officer on as a guest talking about the affects of drunk driving on one's reflexes; Dr. Johnny Fever is drinking throughout the episode, and his reflex-times actually improve the more he drinks.

I had a friend in college (a brilliant kid, never studied and kicked my ass in classes) who was like this when we played drinking games -- he just got quicker, smarter, and funnier the more alcohol he drank ...

224 More magic - I remember a story about an AI analysis on FPGA (basically a computer chip you can reprogram to do different things). They got it to come up with a FPGA design/program to do what they wanted, but it did it very, very efficiently. By an order of magnitude.

The engineers were concerned, as they didn't understand how there would be so much cruft and unneeded design in hand-rolled code. So they analyzed. And analyzed.

Turns out, the code "did not work". More accurately, there were side effects from the AI's design technique that worked on the specific FPGA chip it was working with. Run this little bit of code, and the flow of electricity would change enough so that bit of code 'malfunctioned', but in the way that supported the goal. Terribly efficient, but not fully reproducible for other chips without those same exact flaws.

Wondering how much code was designed by developers who used similar "undocumented features" and other bugs, making the software unstable and unusable in other contexts, but allowing them to ship today.

225 Discriminative AI:

Imagine deciding you want to learn how to swing a golf club better. Golf is, apparently, an expensive sport. There's the hardware itself, your golf bag and golf clubs. There are the fees for a golf course, which you can't use 24/7 because shared resource. If you want to train, you need someone to coach, which would mean even more money.

What if you could train how to swing in your backyard, or even in a room within your house (without actual ball) (or maybe keep it outside; remember the Wii-motes). A specialized golf tee platform, some cameras, and an AI tutor. You do a few practice swings, it records the motion. Calculates your body - height, arm length, where your hips are, etc. Calculates how you swing. Identifies issues with how you move, and provides advice on how to improve your posture, grip, motion. Maybe it could also simulate what your swing would do to a golf ball, giving a virtual display of where it would go. And then different examples of its path, based upon different wind patterns.

If you keep up with the training, you could learn a part of how to be a better golfer. Personalized for you, not reliant on the limited time of another.
