Top Story

The world's first microprocessor wasn't Intel's 4004, but the 20-bit MP944 control system built for the Grumman F-14 Tomcat. (Tom's Hardware)

Which I already knew, because while it was classified information in 1970 when it first launched - literally - it was declassified in the late 90s. (And because a while back I was doing a search for computer hardware with unusual word sizes, and 20 bits qualified.)

It's also not true.
The first true microprocessor was probably the AL1 from Four-Phase Systems. (Wikipedia)

It was an 8-bit device, but it was what was known as a "bit slice" design: You could simply chain multiple units together to create a larger word size. The AL1 was never sold by itself, but the company did sell the System IV/70, a video terminal controller, that used three such chips to create a 24-bit CPU.

It was announced and in use two months before the first working samples of the MP944, and a year before Intel's 4004.

9 so, in the last 2 months, my computer will start to race, esp when I use Mozilla , or Phonelink...but not right away. I had like 8 tabs, then went to Ace, and my harddrive sounded like it was going to take off! Checked, went up to 8 gigs of ram and was still climbing....closed all tabs, started again, and ...everything is fine! Any reason for this to happen randomly like this?

Some older mainframe architectures used 9-bit bytes, and 18 or 36 bit words.

These days it's typically 64 bits long; that's what a "64-bit processor" means, that its word size is 64 bits. Meaning it can do its fastest math with 64-bit-sized numbers, i.e. numbers that can go from -9,223,372,036,854,775,808 to 9,223,372,036,854,775,807.

64-bit numbers are huge, so there are lots and lots of programs that use 32-bit numbers (minimum value -2,147,483,648, maximum value 2,147,483,647) for most things. And modern processors are also very speedy at doing math on 32-bit numbers. But 64-bit numbers are the "natural" size in modern processors.

Linda, as usual, won't tell me what she wants to do for T-giving. I refuse to go downtown, which involves driving on bad streets, parking blocks from the restaurant, and paying $$$ to walk among panhandlers and sleeping homeless in the area where I grew up. I've suggested a good seafood place in the suburbs; but she says, "I don't want *french fries*" (said in a voice of sheer contempt) "for Thanksgiving."

I've told her, "Either you tell me what you want tomorrow -- you make some suggestions you're happy with -- or I choose for us." Which might be nothing at all. I'm tired of going through this kind of stuff every major holiday: No matter what I do, it's not good enough, and she doesn't tell me she was upset until weeks later.

Plus her birthday is on 12/1, and she has mentioned exactly zero about what she'd like for that. If I ask, I get, "I don't know . . ."

Start with the negative ones. See if they follow a pattern and check when they were submitted. If they are over 4-6 months old, it may not be a problem.
