Teh furry thugs are . . . well, Stirling was sleeping on the bed with me, and is out here now. I don't know where little Dagny is. I've checked the closets -- both of them love to go into the caves, so to speak, and they often get closed in there by mistake -- and nothing. Maybe she's hanging out under the bed.
We treated them both with Bravecto yesterday. Dagny took it in stride. Stirling hates the sensation of it being applied to his skin, and then gallops around for an hour as if he has ants on him. Both got some kitty treats after, so I think they'll forgive us. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at November 14, 2025 05:00 AM (wzUl9) 31

When my first cat got older, he picked random spaces to sleep for several days. He'd cover it in just enough fur and move on to the next. The funniest one was the middle of the living room floor. Why? Because it was a cold day, we had the heater going and when he walked in front of it, that was the new spot since it was comfortable enough.

There's only 1 pet in our house now, since I lost my beloved Lab Elizabeth to cancer at 9 years old. Losing a family member hurts so bad and it's a long time before it can be faced directly--least it has been for me with Mom and Dad (my role model). Our pet now is a feral cat younger daughter fostered, took to the shelter where my wife saw him and fell in love. Now we have him and he's turned into Mr. Super Sociable after a 2 year stint as Basement Cat. And it seems that yours truly is his chosen human. "Bread on Penguins is the best U Tube channel on Linux. She will teach you how it actually works and she does a great job."
Linux isn't like Windows or MacOs. The way Arch works isn't the way Fedora works which isn't the way Gentoo works which isn't the way Ubuntu works which isn't the way Obarun works (but it's close to Arch in some ways) which isn't the way Slackware works and there's variants that I have no idea exist that work differently. That paragraph just about how you install, update, and add more programs to your setup. Linux doesn't have a standard GUI like Windows or MacOs. In fact, there's a difference between your GUI and a "Desktop environment." Windows and MacOs provide "Desktop environments"; the programs you install can know about other programs that you've installed and the GUI you look at can provide somewhat intelligent integration. (part 1 of 2; I blather too much, it seems.) Posted by: Richard Cranium at November 14, 2025 05:51 AM (Koape) 64

But it will warm up into the mid 70's this weekend, rather than the mid 60's that we are looking at for today. Hmmm.... What to do. Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at November 14, 2025 05:53 AM (a1415) 65
(part 2 of 2) The blathering continues.
Your install might use KDE, Gnome, Enlightenment, and maybe others I don't know about. Those would be "Desktop environments". KDE is close to the Windows experience, I think Gnome is close to the MacOs experience (I use MacOs at work but I haven't installed Gnome for over a decade, so I might be WAAY wrong in that assessment), and the last time that I installed Enlightenment, it was closer to the Windows experience. There are "Window managers" like CDE, FVWM or others, which you might consider after you've been using Linux in a GUI for a while. Posted by: Richard Cranium at November 14, 2025 05:56 AM (Koape) 66

Frog has always preferred to sleep laid out fully on his back with all four legs stretched out akimbo. But his sister, Margo has always preferred the more traditional and modest 'lay on her belly' position, and never willingly exposed her belly while sleeping. But with Mrs VIA being gone for those ten days, and now having returned, out of the blue, Margo has developed a desire to plop on the couch directly next to her, and stretch full out on her back, just like her brother does. I started with Slackware because of undergrad course work in operating systems. Stuck with it over windows as I really liked the Xwin UI. Migrated to SGI with a Challenge file server (frigging monster of a machine), when I became a lab manager, then took on two Octane workstations, four Indygo 2 systems, and three Solaris Sparc 20s. The security people asked me to take care of the SCO system as it had the database for all the company classified documents, so I got well rounded in some good Unix systems.
Nowadays, I won't even boot up a new laptop without first booting from a usb and installing unbuntu. Posted by: BifBewalski at November 14, 2025 06:25 AM (hIcZx) 94
