Campaign launched to posthumously award Ace Frehley honorary astronaut status

A campaign to make late Kiss guitarist Ace Frehley an honorary astronaut has been launched, and fans can sign a petition to show their support for the cause.

"On October 16, 2025, the world lost not just a legend, not just a rock icon, but also a good man," says organiser Katherine Sugg. "Paul Daniel 'Ace' Frehley, at the tender age of 21, was brave enough to take one small orange step and one small red step, and make the giant leap into the global phenomenon that we all now know as Kiss. And while most of his dreams ended up coming true, at least one did not.

"When he suddenly passed away from a brain bleed following a head injury at 74, he was still only merely playing the character of a Space Cadet. He never got to be one for real. In honour of his memory, all the lives directly and indirectly impacted by him, and his one last remaining unfulfilled wish, NASA should posthumously make Ace Frehley an honorary astronaut with the rank of “Captain”, because a celestial being of his calibre doesn’t deserve anything less of a send-off than this. His last countdown should be his absolute best!"

World War I Message in a Bottle Found in Australia and Delivered to Families More Than a Century Later

doof-World-War-I-message-inside-a-bottle.jpg

Australian soldiers slipped the letters into a bottle, closed the cap, and pitched it overboard from a ship in the Pacific Ocean as World War I battlefields beckoned them both.

The bottle was a time capsule that would be delivered by fate—and it arrived for overjoyed ancestors last month—more than 100 years after the bottle first hit the water.

On October 9, Peter Brown and his daughter Felicity found the Schweppes-brand bottle resting just above the waterline at Wharton Beach on the south coast of Western Australia. The Brown family frequently walks the beach and helps to clear garbage, but this piece was much more treasure than trash.

Nestled inside the bottle were letters written by two Army privates, Malcolm Neville and William Harley, originally dated August 15,1916.

***

Neville’s letter from “somewhere at sea” requested that the finder send its contents to his mother in South Australia.

“We’re having a real good time, food is real good so far, with the exception of one meal which we buried at sea…The ship is heaving and rolling, but we are as happy as Larry”—which is a well-known Australian expression of contentment.

Check out the whole thing. Kinda cool!

Not related but somehow related (obligatory)

Three Bob Ross Paintings Sold for $600,000 at Auction in Fundraiser for Public Television

Three works from Bob Ross’ classic public television show The Joy of Painting raised over half a million dollars for public television.

Having relied for decades on endowment contributions and pledge drives of every tact and description, it was brilliant idea that puts a brilliant man and his brilliant perspective on the arts back into the spotlight 30 years after his death.

“I think this actually would have been Bob’s idea,” said Joan Kowalski, president of Bob Ross Inc., the firm that manages his likeness, content, and collection of thousands of works that he painted on television, in advance of the auction. “And when I think about that, it makes me very proud.”

The auction came months after cuts to PBS and other stations were passed in the most recent budget, but also as a pair of Bob Ross paintings touched, and then surmounted, 6-figure valuations—something very rarely seen before.

Let the market decide!

20 Kai Trump shot an 83 for dead last in the field.

Not throwing shade at her, just pointing out that she's not tour ready by any stretch of the imagination.

She was a sponsor invite, and has a fairly large social media following, so maybe she brings eyeballs to this event.

Though I think Caitlin Clark brought in more during the Pro-Am

Three Bob Ross Paintings Sold for $600,000 at Auction in Fundraiser for Public Television

Much better than sitting around in a broom closet.

From a 4-year-old article "Why it's nearly impossible to buy an original Bob Ross painting:"

When Ross died in 1995, Bob Ross, Inc. (and thus, the paintings) became the sole property of Annette Kowalski and her husband, Walt.

Today, 1,165 Bob Ross originals - a trove worth millions of dollars - sit in cardboard boxes inside the company’s nondescript office building in Herndon, Virginia.

The "Joan Kowalski" in the article in the Content is Annette's daughter. Hoarding Bob Ross's stuff is the family business, I guess.

97 Disco could sometimes be very creative, engaging music.

At the same time, so could the era's "alternative" music, because it tried so hard to NOT be disco. Examples:

- Undertones, "Teenage Kicks"
- Tom Robinson Band, "2-4-6-8 Motorway"
- Television, "Venus"
- anything by the Ramones

110 From a 4-year-old article "Why it's nearly impossible to buy an original Bob Ross painting:"

Posted by: mikeski paints a happy little tree at November 13, 2025 10:16 PM (nhCoE)

There's a little more to the story than that. Bob Ross owned 1/3 of the company when he died, and he wanted that share to transfer to his son. The Kowalskis owned the other 2/3, and blocked that from happening. They were - and are - in no position to know what Bob would have wanted.

For me, Synch was their worst album (and Miss Gradenko probably their worst song), although their tour was fantastic. I'm with Doof - The Police were one of the best bands ever. Top 4 drummer, Top 4 songwriter, and a very, very good guitarist to round it out.

163 Darrell: you are correct about Synchronicity. Icky in so many spots.

It's a rare example of an album where the hits were the brightest spots on the album. I enjoy Every Breath You Take, Synchronicity I (*not* II) and Wrapped Around Your Finger. I also don't even mind Mother; it's Kubrick-level camp IMHO.

Everything else is a cutesy, pretentious mess unfortunately.

Interestingly, Copeland has talked about how it was originally impossible for him to figure out how to drum it. Says there's 'no downbeat,' which I'm not 100% sure what he's talking about.

177 Copeland is highly underrated as a drummer. I recently listened to the Zeyatta and Ghost albums on a road trip. I was too young to really appreciate them when they came out. As an older and more seasoned music fan (and now able to listen to songs in Rick Beato style), those albums really landed strongly on me.
Posted by: Doof at November 13, 2025 10:46 PM (QMAsf)

I'm not sure how underrated Copeland is. In the conversation of best drummers in rock history, he's usually in the same grouping as Bonham and Peart. At least, he is to my thinking.

In a memoire about a guy growing up in Alaska in the late 40's he talked about the Norwegian guy who lived on a claim up the river from them and would get drunk and throw the bottle with a post card in it into the river where it generally would wash up on the sand bar by the mouth of the river. They decided to mail one of the post cards to a friend in California to mail back.
The old guy was so excited, they decided to keep mailing them to various people his Dad knew all over, including in Africa and Asia.

“Invisible Sun” was the song that got me to like The Police. “Roxanne” didn’t reach me on its release, and it was so overplayed that I never gave The Police any thought…until “Invisible Sun” made its debut on WMMR. It didn’t sound anything like “Roxanne”, and it immediately grabbed me. I became a fan, and eventually was able to sing along with the dreaded “Roxanne”.

I’ve loved “Journey Of The Sorcerer” since I first heard it as the theme song for Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy”.

I agree with both of these. I find a lot of people who complain about the work involved with the holidays, are the same people who drive themselves crazy trying to make everything perfect.

IMHO It's not necessary or even possible for everything to be just right every year, and I'd rather just relax with family than be forced (or force anyone else) to do, create and present all the "correct things."

When it comes to Thanksgiving, I have a sister who insists on doing it all anyway, and I'm thankful for her. But at the same time, I tell her every year, don't kill yourself. I wouldn't have any problem if we just went out to eat for Thanksgiving.

On Yukon Cornelius - Casa Redux back always had/has a number of decorations from Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer TV Special (Rankin Bass 1964) including a small, stuffed Yukon Cornelius. This was due to two facts: 1) we and the kids loved the show; and 2) we actually were friends with Arthur Rankin Jr. (of Rankin Bass) whom we met while sailing to/from, and then living in, Bermuda (Ca. 1996-2016) we lived there full time from 2010 to the end of 2026.
