Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Is This Something?Hunting Season looks a bit like a generic revenge actioner but it's got Mel Gibson and he's really good at revenge actioners. Alas, it's not directed by Mel Gibson, but maybe some of his over-the-top ideas for cinematic violence were used. The final moment of the clip is good.I doubt many of you will be into one but here's the Michael Jackson biopic. As Ethan Van Sciver remarked, they seem to have hired an actor with Michael Jackson's post plastic surgery nose, but had him wear a way-oversized prosthetic nose before the surgery. It's distracting. Michael Jackson's nose was never big nor really noticeable. It was a normal African nose. That's why people were weirded out when he turned it into a little elfin white woman's nose. It was like, dude, there was nothing wrong with your nose. No one noticed your nose until now. I think it's like when they keep taking away Superman's red briefs. They say they remove them because it "seems silly," but we've all gotten used to the red briefs on the outside. It's only when you take them away that we notice them, and then we notice the entire suit, and think: Well now it all looks silly, doesn't it? And I mention that because Space Ice has a video reviewing Superman, calling it the Superman movie for people who don't like Superman. Is that true? I thought the Henry Cavill movie was the Superman movie for people who think Superman is silly and who therefore don't like Superman. I know I have a very minority opinion on this, but I didn't love The Dark Knight because it was sooooo self-serious. I kept wondering, "How seriously do they intend for me to take a Batman movie? How seriously do think I'm capable of taking it?" I liked the first Nolan movie more because, while a more "realistic, grounded" take on Batman, it was still, you know, mostly a Batman movie. The sequel was like... I dunno, a meditation on the 2000s War on Terrorism mixed with Batman mixed with Saw. Don't get me wrong, I liked it. But I only liked it. The Cavill Superman was more of that but with a character even more inappropriate for the "dark and gritty" treatment. I bought the new Superman movie when Amazon reduced the price to like $8. But here's the thing: I turned it off after six or seven minutes. It was just not doing it for me. But I didn't mind seeing the Silver Age silliness in the ads -- Krypto or a giant kaiju monster. Superman is -- all superheroes are -- fundamentally silly. That's part of the charm. You can reduce that a bit but I don't want to see it removed completely. But even though I didn't mind seeing Silver Age silliness in the trailer, the first six minutes of this movie were already dragging for me and I just turned it off. I suppose I'll watch it one day, but I don't know when. I got whiplash from going from the too-serious Cavil/Snyder movie to this too-silly/too-cartooney version. Maybe something in the middle? Like, I dunno, the very well loved Christopher Reeve Superman movies? (I and II, natch.) BTW, Space Ice says the best Superman is Christopher Reeves. There is no Christopher Reeves. There is Christopher Reeve, and then there is George Reeves who played Superman in the 50s. Just something I always notice. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

Saw "The Unstoppable Man" last night. From, like, 1961-ish.
Kind of interesting. The plot summary goes, "When crooks kidnap an American businessman's son, he goes after them with a FLAMETHROWER." So it's kind of like one of those Liam Neeson/Mel Gibson parent-revenge movies, but from a lomng time ago. And it's end up being a commentary on American vs. British worldviews. The lead character is an Ameeican business based in London, When his kid gets kidnapped, he quickly learns that the British police are limp, slow-moving, and basically useless. So he goes after the kidnapper "his own way," which falls short of Charles Bronson/Liam Neeson violence, but reveals the American go-get-'em no-holds-barred attitude that the British lack, but admire. Ultimately, the British cops are shown to be cleverer than first assumed, and the single flamethrower scene was a bit of a letdown, but still: A Thumbs Up. Batman Begins was also my favorite. IMHO, Chris Nolan was awesome in totally remaking pop fiction / comic book movies to be dark yet realistic and thrilling. They'd just gotten way too campy and corny, with only special effects increasing (to the extreme of Michael Bay...). But yeah, Dark Knight, as Peter Griffin would say, "insists on itself". I also liked it, but Batman Begins was better.
That said, ace... 6 minutes of Superman? C'mon man! 6 minutes is basically that extended trailer. That movie was AWWFULLLL!!!! Even my wife, not a big movie fan but open-minded, was moaning at how stupid the whole thing was. Nerdrotic hit the nail on the head with his review. You really have no appreciate for how bad that movie was from 6 minutes. And Space Ice is right... THAT is the Superman movie for people who hate Superman. Cavill was cool. It was Zack Snyder who was weird (and I never liked 300 either). Frankly David Corenswet was fine too. It was James Gunn. And the supporting staff. These people don't like Superman. Snyder liked Superman, he just wanted it to be like 300. But Man of Steel was much more honorific to Donner's Superman (the best) than Gunn's. I love Superman. When I was 7 years old, my Mom used the Christopher Reeve movie that had just come out to explain the concept of adoption to me, as I was adopted as an infant. This has led to a lifetime love of the character, though he has certainly seen better days. I hated the Snyder take on him—this truly was a take geared towards those who don’t like the character. I thought Gunn got it mostly right, from the casting to how the character was depicted. I don’t think that Superman is something Gunn has a particular affinity for, hence the Justice Gang prominence as well as the take on Supergirl. I loved seeing the Silver Age trappings brought to life and that is well within Gunn’s wheelhouse. I think Gunn left the character in a better position than he was before the 2025 movie though I would love to see a director who loves the character like Donner did go forward with the foundation Gunn laid.

Puzo is credited for the 1978 Superman screenplay, but Puzo’s draft was riddled with camp—Superman was going to mistake Telly Savalas for Lex Luthor, capped with ‘Who loves ya baby?’—and the script as filmed is mostly by Tom Mankiewicz.

The Michael Jackson flick should be entertaining, but only because Jackson himself was so interesting, and could put on a show like no one else in the history of the universe.

I get people not liking "No Country" and it's really the Coen's fault.
The first two-thirds of the movie are such a kick-ass action thriller, you think the movie is an action thriller (why wouldn't you?). Then the putative protagonist is killed OFF-SCREEN! Because the movie was never about him. It was about Tommy Lee Jones. And it's a tragedy. I could see anyone being pissed off by that. When my boys were around 3-4 years old, including my current 2 year old, I capped off a lot of bedtime stories with the clip of Christopher Reeve busting out his clothes and saving Lois and the helicopter to John Williams' score, along with the few save-the-day scenes that followed. They love it. Is there any other video clip that's as inspiring and exciting (and innocent) to an American boy as that? Anyway, that's why Donner's Superman is still the best. Superman is iconic. Truth, justice, and the American way. He was a Boomer, but a true successor to the Greatest Generation, super-human... Snyder's may have been weird and dark, but Kevin Costner's Jonathan Kent and Russell Crowe's Jor-El were inspiring, and Henry Cavill was great as Superman. Gunn's Superman was a Gen X'er, sarcastic and self-depreciating and losing and getting beat up more than anyone in the movie. Nicholas Hoult was a great Luthor, but Gunn's movie as written was just dumb. A jumped the shark Guardians of the Galaxy episode with Superman as the Vol 3-ish pathetic Star Lord and worse writing with DC characters... Star Lord is Gen X; Superman is Superman...

341 Costner’s take on Pa Kent was awful: from telling Clark to maybe let those kids die, to waving off Clark from saving him from a tornado—nothing inspiring about him at all.
Posted by: Open Channel D ---------- Both Costner and Donner's Pa Kent warned Superman of letting people be aware of his powers. Man of Steel just went further down that rabbit hole, b/c Snyder (and modern audiences? maybe Nolan's involvement?) wanted more seriousness. The scenes you talk about are products of that approach. Costner could be overly serious, but he didn't write the role. But both pushed Superman to be good, to be something more. They weren't awesome characters, but not bad. Gunn's Pa (and Ma) Kent was just an insult to 'old people' in flyover country... Like the Waterboy to Cajuns... Guess I'm being more comparative than empirical... Ok, the internet is telling me that the great diddly / doodly bifurcation occurred in the 60s. Before then it was all doodly since its origin in the 30s and then diddly was created int the 60s and branched off.

The new Superman flick is basically Smallville on the big screen, which isn't bad as a lot of people liked Smallville, including me.
Nothing will top Superman The Movie just like nothing will top Batman 1989. The Dark Knight might be one of the best films ever, but it's not really a Batman film, it operates at another level. Posted by: Thomas Bender at November 10, 2025 05:48 PM (XV/Pl) 401

Posted by: naturalfake at November 10, 2025 *** I haven't seen the new one yet. Since I did grow up with Silver Age DC Comics, I'd probably like it. The Reeve films were tongue-in-cheek, but they were fun and perfectly cast. Reeve was a true actor. Richard Donner honed his director skills in TV, including more than a few Man From U.N.C.L.E. episodes, and the Reeve films had something of that flavor. 388 there was absolutely no attempt to portray Superman as “toxic masculinity” in the movie—this is your interpretation but it is not factual. In fact, the actual message for immigrants is that America is a much better place than where you came from. Posted by: Open Channel D
--------------- That his parents implored him to start a harem and lord over Earth as their superior, and that this position caused a lot of (most?) people to hate him for at least part of the movie, is factual. That the movie ended without denying that this was Superman's true parents' direction to their son was also factual. Whether or not that depicts the filmmakers woke worldview, and that they want to project that worldview on their audience, can be an opinion. But it ain't a tough opinion to reach.
