Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | THE MORNING RANT: Post-Millenials Abandoning Television, and other Random TV Thoughts
At my day job, I recently participated in a gathering of 10 employees for the purpose of introducing a new company initiative. As an icebreaker, the moderator asked each person when introducing themselves to name a television series they are currently watching. Four of the ten individuals stated that they don’t watch any TV at all. Of those four, three of them were clearly under-35, possibly in their mid to late 20s (it’s hard for me to guess ages these days) and the other was a lady probably over 55. The moderator gently pressed a little and asked if they watch any shows on their tablets or devices, and all four of them said “no.” I thought about old memories of how TV was demonized when I was a child in the ‘70s, yet today’s younger generation has somewhat abandoned television. I also thought about what this portends for Hollywood. I knew that people had generally stopped going to theaters to watch movies like they used to, but I kind of assumed that meant more time was spent in front of the TV, and that there was still strong demand for all the streaming TV shows. Maybe not. Since I’m talking television today, rather than my normal focus on the climate hoax, woke capital, or burning EVs, here are a few more television-related things that are on my mind… ![]() ![]() After school, I wanted to play catch, shoot hoops, ride bicycles, maybe get a pickup game of touch football going in the street, whatever. But at 4:30 every afternoon, reruns of Star Trek came on, and my two closest friends would go inside to watch it. They had already seen every episode numerous times, and for the life of me I did not understand why they wanted to re-re-re-re-watch a show for which they knew every line, rather than engage in some outdoor fun and play. In retrospect, as my circle of closest friends changed around the high school years, I think Star Trek may have been a factor in me moving on from TV-rerun-addicted friends to new friends. Related, MTV annoyed me the same way in college. Trying to pry some of my friends away from MTV to go out and actually engage in college fun could be exasperating. (“Hang on Buck, just a few more songs.”) As cool as Tom Petty’s “Don’t Come Around Here No More” video might have been, I could not understand watching it for yet another time rather than going to out to a college bar and chatting up some coeds. If you’re too young to remember, here’s the video I’m referencing.Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

Because ST:TOS was awesome, you philistine.
I cannot really say that I am watching any show right now. As far as 'series' I have watched recently, that is a tough one. Reacher (although not a huge fan as the show has gone on.) Cobra Kai (but it became impossible to watch if you don't have netflix.) I have tried watching a few BAD shows. Like Mr and Mrs Smith on amazon. Just miserable people. That is the problem with pretty much every show these days, miserable people. Posted by: Aetius451AD at November 10, 2025 11:04 AM (bss/y) 10

I was commenting on the superiority of the old Netflix model the other day.
You could access to almost anything through Netflix but you'd have to wait for it to be mailed to you. Now you can instantly watch anything a streaming service has but...most of what they have is crap. 20 years ago there would be a movie I watched to watch every few weeks. Now? Maybe a few a year. Yeah, no. ------ He's 1 for 3. The Jeffersons and Sanford and Son aged horribly. Three's Company is still very, very funny. Green Acres is awesome. The Andy Griffith Show and both versions of Bob Newhart's shows are really good. WKRP and The Mary Tyler Moore Show are awesome. Conversely, The Dick Van Dyke Show is ONLY good when it is a "office" episode, where they focus on Robert Petrie's work--its TERRIBLE when its a "home" episode because the only thing Mary Tyler Moore's character does is whine and screw stuff up. Most western TV just flat out fucking sucks. Who wants to watch entertainment designed by scolds, or get bombarded with ads pushing all manner of degenerate bullshit. We don't watch a ton of stuff on screens regularly - neither of us have ever, as adults, had any sort of cable or satellite service and we read a book or two a week - but most is subtitled. I work Hollywood adjacent now in this second career and however far left and disgusting you think a lot of those outfits are (Disney, etc), take that and multiply it by 10. Wild topic segue: It is really shocking how many western script writers, and *TV* writers in particular, all have aphantasia. It's really weird. One would think that the ability to envision a scene is required to write effectively for a TV show. My theory is that they're almost all progs, and THAT group is jammed full of those with aphantasia Posted by: heya at November 10, 2025 11:08 AM (6diye) 30

My kids almost barely have the attention span to watch a movie. That entire generation needs "TikTok" like levels of stimulus.
Younger people dont watch as much TV as we knew it, but they're staring at a screen just the same, it's just their smart phone. Even I have been ruined by it, try not picking up your phone while watching something on TV. And yes, I miss the Netflix envelopes. The quality of big production movies is way lower. Mostly in writing and acting which should be the easier things to fix. Growing up, Star Trek was in evening reruns. Somewhere around 8PM IIRC. I did see a couple episodes when they originally aired, but most of the reruns and re-reruns were after the series was benched.
Was too old for MTV. Watched a bit of it... but thought it was just weird. Mom and dad used to watch a number of variety shows and sitcoms that they'd let us view with them. After about 1975 or so, and as a teenager, there were far more interesting things to be involved with than the TV. Posted by: Martini Farmer at November 10, 2025 11:10 AM (NwnyJ) 39

I used to like to have older kids shows on in the background since they didn't have the racism and gay crap and could be pretty funny. And they wouldn't piss me off.
You should see some of them now though. Damn. In any event, within the last several months half the kids channels in Canada disappeared. The companies didn't want to pay the money for a dwindling audience so channels just disappeared. Including TWO out of 3 Disney Channels. I was surprised. But considering how even kids shows were pushing the gay shit, loving parents can no longer just let the tv babysit. Check out "Fay and Fluffy." The craziest thing was that a lot of shows tried to check off as many boxes as possible by having inter-racial gay couples. Kids don't need to see that crap. It's more or less the same thing for Millennials and Zoomers, too. Old shows light up the charts week after week. "Friends" and "Suits" and various others rarely fail to chart, and new stuff often fails to do so, or falls off immediately. Hits are hits, and there are damn few of them anymore.
It's partly quality (quality broadly sucks now), partly atomization of the market (there is no mass market anymore, since everything is aggressively and narrowly targets, there are a billion channels and more programs than anyone could watch in several lifetimes), partly shifting preferences. Mass media isn't dead yet, but it's on its way down. Targeting and "The Algorithm" (tm) are seeing to that. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at November 10, 2025 11:14 AM (zxP/x) 62

Sgt. Jamie Milliman knocked on the door, summons in hand, and accused Elser of stealing a package from the doorstep in the neighboring town of Bow Mar, only 50 feet south.
The proof, according to Milliman: Footage from Flock surveillance cameras showing Elser’s forest green Rivian driving through the town from 11:52 a.m. to 12:09 p.m. on the day of the theft. But Elser, a financial advisor, told the sergeant she had no idea what he was talking about. I was born in a town in North Carolina that looked a lot like Mayberry. And the show got the small town vibe just right. Andy Griffith had a vacation home near Manteo, NC, and my mother literally ran into him at a local grocery store - she accidentally bumped into his shopping cart. I like about streaming is the power-watching. Being able to watch an entire season in a week, or even an entire 5 year story arc in a month, makes it more like reading a book. ie, I never watch a single episode of Breaking Bad until the show was over. Then I binged.

And they hire trannies and dangerhairs by the dumptruck full, who try to turn anything they do into recruitment. The "modern audience" doesn't exist, at least not in commercially relevant numbers. Is Chuck Schumer actually going to be defenestrated? I have my doubts. The amusing part is that I don't think he wanted a shutdown in the first place, because he knew it was a sure loser. But if he hadn't called for it, he'd have been booted anyway. Damned if he does, and damned if he doesn't.
In the classic novel The Maltese Falcon, Detective Sam Spade explains that every scheme needs a fall guy — a scapegoat who takes the blame to protect others. That’s exactly Chuck Schumer’s role now. When you can't hold your own members together and the bill passes anyway, all the finger-pointing in the world won't change the fact that you failed to keep your caucus together. Despite his symbolic vote against reopening the government, he’s become the convenient target for his party’s chaos. Now Schumer’s the one absorbing the fallout to shield party leadership from real accountability...Whether or not he survives this latest crisis remains to be seen, but we can see one thing: The knives are out, Chuck Schumer is the target, and the entire party is now in chaos. https://is.gd/PiOJuE Posted by: Archimedes at November 10, 2025 11:33 AM (Riz8t) 208

The lowered barriers to entry created by streaming and prior to that hundreds of cable channels just ushered in a glut of dreck. We were better off before with only a handful of channels with a confined number of hours within which they could air programming. Sure, the decision-makers had casting couches and other corruption that kept some good programming out, but there was SOME accountability on those people to produce watchable programming. Now, between the mental decline from lack of education + woke indoctrination within production, along with these lowered barriers to entry, there's less supply of and incentive for good programming than ever. Coupled with all the quality old stuff people can stream, and Hollywood sure seems to be dying a well-deserved albeit tragic death...

I'm another one who misses the red envelope. The main reason is that the selection of movies on the DVD service was MUCH greater than is available on streaming. DVDs of foreign-language movies, documentaries, music performances, and just plain weird stuff were readily available via the red envelope; whereas nowadays, many are hard to find, if not impossible, on streaming services. Not to mention that the cost was quite reasonable, again compared with streaming.
The drawbacks were that now and again, you'd get an unplayable disk; and weeks might pass between making a selection and the disk arriving in your mailbox. Nothing's perfect. But overall, I preferred the red envelope to what's available now. Posted by: Nemo at November 10, 2025 11:41 AM (4RPgu) 240

Flirted with cutting the cord but realizing we still like it for (1) sports [didn't find a great alternative to get everything we want for less $] and (2) we just like the unpredictability of finding something we like that's 'on'. When you stream, you're committing some portion of time to watching something. But just flipping the TV on and having something in the background, it's just environmental entertainment that you may or may not stop and sink into. Other than sports, we don't 'commit' time to watch TV. But if say The Sound of Music is on TCM while I'm making dinner Saturday evening and the boys have been studying WWII and never seen it, suddenly everyone enjoys watching it. But we never would've gone through and found that to stream. Without the random finds, we'd probably have the thing off. According to Scheel, the image of the ‘pagan North’ has often been exploited for political purposes. “The clearest negative example is how the Volk movement and the National Socialists exploited Norse mythology, misusing medieval written sources to underpin their racial ideology.” While there are still links to right-wing extremism today, the overall reception is now much more heterogeneous and covers a very broad spectrum of interests and forms. The field of neo-pagan groups is also heterogeneous.
Ideas about Norse mythology have also been taken up in art and literature. “One further example is Richard Wagner’s opera ‘The Ring of the Nibelung’,” explains Simon Hauke. “Many of the ideas we have today about Norse mythology come from this opera’s premiere, including the figure of the Valkyrie, whom Wagner clothed as a decidedly feminine warrior. Wagner’s image of the Valkyrie is often adopted today, for example, on album covers of metal bands and Yu-Gi-Oh! Cards.” Posted by: SMOD at November 10, 2025 11:50 AM (RHGPo) 284

On September 11, 2003, John Ritter was rehearsing for 8 Simple Rules... for Dating My Teenage Daughter on the Walt Disney Studios lot in Burbank, California, when he suddenly fell ill: sweating profusely, vomiting, and complaining of chest pain. He was taken across the street to the Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center (the same hospital where he had been born) at 6:00 pm. Ritter was initially treated by emergency room physicians for an assumed heart attack; however, his condition quickly worsened. Ritter was then diagnosed with aortic dissection and taken into surgery, but was pronounced dead at 10:48 p.m., at the age of 54.

Vinyl records, if well cared for, last a lifetime, or longer. Even if they are scratchy, you can still play them and enjoy them. Tapes slowly degrade just sitting. And 8-track and cassette formats are both prone to jams, or getting snagged in the rollers and torn up.

But the "audiophile" market is mostly snake oil that doesn't matter in the slightest. Gold-plated optical cables are among the stupidest things I have ever seen (yeah, they exist. An audio dealer tried to sell me one when I bought my speakers). Part of the problem is the death of the "middle class audiophile" (the normal dude with a nice Hi-Fi), and part is having expense be part of the bragging rights. I don't see any similar moves that the GOP can make. We already control SCOTUS, barely. I doubt we could sanitize voting nationally because the Constitution says the states run elections. I am continually ranting about the cancellation of the Netflix DVD service. Think what you want about Netflix, but they had an enormous library of movies and TV shows. I got caught up on so many things because of that service. Now, it's much harder to find an old movie or a TV series I wasn't able to watch when it was on. I understand it's a streaming world, but that bone for the dinosaurs is sorely missed.
My kids do not watch any TV show that is current. It's mostly stuff on their phones, and if they do watch a TV show it's usually something from the past. AP BIO. YOUNG SHELDON. BOJACK HORSEMAN. etc Posted by: Lex at November 10, 2025 12:11 PM (l5xX+) 385

375 Nitrogen filled cables!
Posted by: Aetius451AD at November 10, 2025 12:06 PM (bss/y) I hope that is a joke, but I wouldn't be surprised if it exists! Overview of Nitrogen-Filled Cables Nitrogen-filled cables utilize pressurized nitrogen gas as an insulating medium instead of traditional dielectric fluids. This design is particularly beneficial in high-tension cables (33 kV to 210 kV) where moisture can compromise insulation integrity. My favorite "audiophile" scam is the "CD Transport"
It's a CD player without a DAC, that you plug into your own DAC with a digital signal cable. It has the tray, laser, motors, etc., but no analogue audio output at all. It's just a head-end decoder that sends the digital bitstream out to whatever your equipment is that decodes it. It's a cool idea, if you have a DAC somewhere else that's really good and low-noise. When I was building my stereo, I looked into it. Close to a grand. For half a CD player. For the cheap one. I bought a used CD player with a digital out from the early 90s off eBay. Been going strong for years, and does exactly the same thing, since I use the digital out and let the good DAC in my amp do the heavy lifting. I use it as a "transport" - except it cost $50, not close to a thousand. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at November 10, 2025 12:12 PM (zxP/x) 392

With analogue, you 'could' make an argument that a better conductor makes for better sounds/signal.
Digital is either on or off. Posted by: Aetius451AD at November 10, 2025 12:05 PM (bss/y) ++++ And you'd even be right to a point, and it's still true. Use good copper wire and gold-plated connector, and you're in good shape. That good copper wire and gold-plated connector needn't cost hundreds of dollars unless you're a sucker. A good digital signal cable (e.g., HDMI) will probably get you a longer run than a lower-quality cable, but if you are sending enough bits in the right order for the inbuilt error correction scheme, it works. That's it. It works or it doesn't. There's almost no decay of digital signals. There's a cliff. You don't get snow and static, you just get macroblocking and then nothing. Never was much of a TV watcher. Oh, I watched all the kids' programs and cartoons when I was a kid, but frankly even before junior high school I'd pretty much ceased bothering with it. (My mother got mad at me when we were let off from school because of Kennedy's assassination, and I sat in another room reading something. She ordered me to join the family and watch the TV coverage.)
I never felt as though I was missing anything, either. Our blogger Throckmorton rattled off the names of those TV series, but tho I recognize the names I never saw any more than a snippet of a few of them. This is not to set up any kind of moral stance or anything. TV just never particularly appealed to me. Posted by: LCMS Rulz! at November 10, 2025 12:44 PM (bufu1) 432
