First-World Problems...

Leafcrisis2025.jpg

Is there some sort of cosmic joke I am not privy to? Every single time we clear our leaves for the town's pickup, along comes a delightfully windy fall day to redistribute those carefully corralled leaves.

Every. Single. Time!

***

And below the fold is a carefully considered rebuttal to my coffee-cup missive from last week.

I understand the sentimentality of a favorite mug. But, coffee drinking is serious business and should be treated as such.

Pragmatism should outweigh sentiment in this situation. That's why I switched to an insulated mug. However, I purposefully got one that doesn't look like the standard "travel" mug. People who use those are not serious about coffee. They are merely vagabonds.

A good insulated mug will keep coffee hot for nearly 6 hours. This is important, because a regular mug forces you to drink your coffee at a speed decided by the mug. It should be the other way around. And, if you can pace out your consumption you don't drink as much coffee...which is important based on the way I brew it. If the spoon doesn't stand up on its own, the coffee is weak.

9 I had a cat get out Thursday evening. Just as it was getting dark, so I'm searching under bushes, among the leaves.

He managed to make it to the patio door Friday evening, so all is well.

Still, I think it's time to cut down all those ragged bushes. I hate the way they look, and now I hate the fact they gave my boy a place to hide, so he had to spend a night outside, alone.

33 I am blessed/cursed to have a big lawn with big trees. I am also blessed/cursed to have a riding mower with a bagger.
I take off the bagger and run over the leaves a few times, chopping them up fairly well. Then I use the bagger while sucking up the leaves, which have been greatly reduced in volume.
The chopped leaves then get spread over the garden area.

54 I put the front end loader on the tractor today. It's not just the bucket but the whole assembly; arms, frame, bucket and hydro lines. The valve is actually on the tractor frame. You drive up under the arms and attach the lines to the tractor. Then, reseat the whole thing in its cradle, pin it, and secure the bucket.

Easy if you do it frequently.

I do it twice a year. 🤔

The flap's other benefit is as a deflector keeping the exhaust material from the street, hitting cars or pedestrians. Also same

Snowflake isn't my cat but I bring her in a few times a day for hugs and kisses. She runs to the top of the stairs, lays down and I'll pet her. The dog, Ralphy who is 100 years old in dog years, is fine with this.

My part of Canada isn't too bad for winter. I'm South of Detroit. And the cats have an electric blanket in their cat house. But still. Outdoor cats are just made to break your heart.

105 I have two trees left with leaves. I like to mulch the leaves with the lawn mower but doing that in December in Canada kind of sucks.

I'm taking a break from some studying to bitch.

First. Thanksgiving is over and I have the Christmas lights up outside. I KNOW someone here mentioned this before. LED spotlights are great because they use less electricity.

BUT, if there's a light snow, the older lights would melt the snow away. With the LEDs, if we get snow here, I'll have to clear it away. Fortunately, my area doesn't usually get a lot of snow.

Second. The hand pumps on containers of hand moisturizer. About 20% of the product is left in the container. I cut it open to use the rest.

I'd love to see manufacturers slope the inside of the containers so the rest of the product goes to the bottom and can be pumped out. Great idea. Make it happen.

Now to install and wire speakers. Minor First-world problem: I know I have a large carton filled with hanks of multi-conductor wire that would be ideal for running to the rear speakers, and I cannot find it.

161 Is there some sort of cosmic joke I am not privy to? Every single time we clear our leaves for the town's pickup, along comes a delightfully windy fall day to redistribute those carefully corralled leaves.

Every. Single. Time!
=======

It's due to climate change, CBD. If you'd bought only electric vehicles for the past twenty-five years, and covered your lawn and roof with solar panels plugged into your home's circuitry at the same time, you would not have a localized windy leaf redistribution problem!

162 >>Earlier this year, we spent a few weeks in Italy and Spain. We splurged on business class seats. The lie-flat seats are amazing.

Longest flight(s) I made was from Perth, Australia back to Providence. All of it was in Business/First. I think I slept about 2/3 of the trip. If I had done that in coach I probably would have killed someone.

I have to agree with Piper, in that on a long flight I think I'd rather fly in cargo.

Or to put it another way, I will suffer the pain in my arse, to not be cramped in with the other people. Let me stand up and walk around, pee in a bucket, and I'll put pain cream on my butt when I get to my hotel.

164 I planted two catalpas about five years ago. They grow very fast. I only get worms for fishing every other year so I'm not sure what's going on with the off years. I can sit in the yard and hear the worms eating the catalpa leaves. Very loud.

I would be cargo because that is what my personal budget would allow for, but now that you mention it, the lack of people would be a nice offset to this situation. Lol.

We have Golden Willow trees planted all along our back fence. We didn't plant them, this house is old and the first owners planted them.

Do not plant them. They don't provide shade, the branches are very thin and they shed branches all year.

They are a PIA.

In a previous job I was doing a lot of international travel. A lot. We had a rule that any flight over 6 hours qualified for Business Class. I don't care that much about First Class for domestic flying. I'm used to the crappy conditions. But on long flights it's a completely different world.
Posted by: JackStraw at November 16, 2025 03:18 PM (viF8m)

Same. My company's rule was anything international was business/ or first (if no biz was available). But all domestic was coach. Canada was considered international . So a 1-2 hour flight to Canuckistan was in first. Meanwhile a 5 hour cross country trip was domestic and hence coach.

Make sense of that. Lol

192 FALL LEAVES -- SAVE SOME FOR NEXT SUMMER
When my grandkids were little, I sewed 4-foot tall growing bags from weed-barrier fabric so the Littles could each have their own potato bag ... In springtime, the kids helped roll the sides down to about 6 inches, placed 2-3 chitted potatoes at the bottom of the bag, then covered them loosely with composted soil ... After potato leaves appeared on the potato plants, tree leaves (saved from the previous Fall) were added to the bags ... And once the potato plant leaves reached the top of the rolled sides, the sides of the growing bags would be unrolled a little further so sunlight couldn't reach any of the baby tubers developing on the plant (filling the new empty space with more tree leaves saved from the previous Fall) ... Eventually, the potato plants indicated when it was time to harvest (by withering and turning yellow) ... So at that point we placed a tarp on the ground and let the grandkids dump out the contents of their individual growing bags to see what they'd grown themselves ... The kids enjoyed growing purple potatoes most of all!
