Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Music Thread: The Longer The Better? Maybe Not!![]() [Garrett's cartoon rock phase] Rock And Roll started out with short, snappy songs, but then meandered into new territory as it absorbed different styles and began to dabble in all sorts of new stuff. Folk and grunge and R&B and metal and new wave and progressive and yacht rock and ska punk and you name it, somebody did it. One of the reasons I was amused by punk rock is that even if the songs sucked, they were only two minutes long! But a lot of other genres specialized in long...sometimes ridiculously long...songs. I know what I like, but what about you? Anyone have any strong feelings about the length of songs and how they fit into Rock And Roll? Rock-n-roll? Rock & Roll? Hell! We can't even agree on how to spell it! Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

I'm watching "Liar Liar", starring Jim Carrey and the bride of chucky.
Carrey is definitely always watchable. It's hard to root for his character at first because he is such a sleaze but that's the setup for the rest of it. Someone needs to put Carrey and Hugh Grant in a movie together. Posted by: gKWVE at November 08, 2025 07:38 PM (gKWVE) 18

Long songs are ok if they aren't broken up by long periods of silliness. In a cover band one time we did a song that was 13 minutes long. The band is Helloween, the song is halloween. 13 minutes of intensity, many guitar harmonies, many different parts. A great song, but required total focus to pull off. Was it fun? Hell yeah it was.

It was a secondary road between Woodbridge VA and the Capitol City. Off the Interstate. I used it extensively to commute to Alexandria, VA back in the 80's. 53 CDs really disappointed me. Digital, with enough EDC coding to correct minor errors in pickup, low physical pickup pressure on the media. Ought to last forever, I thought.
Nope. They're just as fragile as vinyl, and the crappy EDC often just locks up the whole drive and driver software, instead of simply skipping the undecodable bad frames. I got so many CDRWs that deteriorated in good storage, that are unreadable on any drive now. BIG disappointment. Posted by: gp at November 08, 2025 07:59 PM (7imtn) 64

The length of recorded 20th century popular music was dictated by a couple of limits. The amount of time people could/would dance to a song and the amount of music that would fit on a single side of a 78 rpm recording (6 minutes maximum).
These limits came to define what was considered the correct length of a popular record or about 2 to 3 minutes. I strongly suspect radio stations had a hand in length limits as this allowed for lots of commercials. In a similar manner music publishers preferred short pieces as they made more money by selling individual songs. The artists zeroed in on this limit and wrote, at times, epic musical poetry. This began to change with the 33 1/3 LP came into its own which allowed for much longer pieces to be recorded, a particular advantage for classical music. This feature was exploited by Jazz musicians with Miles Davis' Kind of Blue being an excellent example with its 9 minute tracks. The Rock musicians, as their skills developed, also exploited this feature with mid 60s Dylan be another example of longer pieces being recorded. Today the 2-3 minute song persists because it is an excellent length for single themed popular songs. My .02, and it's a fascinating subject: Rock and Roll grew out of jump blues. and jump blues grew out of swing jazz and traditional blues. The phrase "rock and roll" shows up in the lyric of a song that Ella Fitzgerald did with the Chick Webb Orchestra, IIRC, and she was probably not the first to use it.
You can really go down a rabbit hole trying to find the first rock and roll song, but I think Rocket 88, by Ike Turner and his Kings of Rhythm is as good a candidate as any. And, IMHO, the dividing line between rock and roll, and just plain "rock" is the dividing line between 2 to 3 minute singles, and long album cuts. Disaster Area is a plutonium rock band fronted by Hotblack Desiato from the Gagrakacka Mind Zones, and this ensemble is generally regarded as not only the loudest rock band in the Galaxy, but also the loudest noise of any kind at all. Regular concert goers judged that the best sound balance was usually to be heard from within large concrete bunkers some thirty-seven miles away from the stage, whilst the musicians themselves played their instruments by remote control from within a heavily insulated spaceship which stayed in orbit around the planet - or, more frequently, around a completely different planet. https://t.ly/4thFa Posted by: Bertram Cabot, Jr. at November 08, 2025 08:19 PM (pkeXY) 103

One of the reasons a lot of early rock was short was because of radio. They had a time format and if you wanted to get played you fit.
Posted by: JackStraw at November 08, 2025 07:47 PM (viF8m) Until 33 1/3 LP's became popular, there was practically no way to record a long musical piece. You could record symphonies and operas on 16" 78 RPM records, and stack them on a changer; you played all the "A" sides, and then flipped the stack over, and played all the "B" sides to get the whole performance in sequence. A few weeks ago, I stumbled on what might have been a neat song on YouTube; "Why Should I Kneel." It was a song from a high-fantasy setting, of a dragon who was confronted by a knight, and was unimpressed, defiant, and antagonistic.....Until the dragon noticed the 'knight' was a girl. Then the tone changed instantly. And I hit the close-window button before the next line was even finished.
I have gotten so sick of the girl-boss trope that I won't even tolerate it in my music. Posted by: Castle Guy at November 08, 2025 08:32 PM (Lhaco) 127

Myself, I probably won't forget any of it because I probably won't hear any of it. For me, popular music started heading downhill after The Association stopped recording. Didn't the later Enigma machines have 4 or 5 rotors?
I expect a software-defined Enigma machine already exists? Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at November 08, 2025 08:33 PM (npFr7) I had a link to an Enigma emulator but that was in 2012 or so. The naval version had four rotors, but I think the army stuck with a 3 rotor system David Khan's The Code Breakers talks extensively about the Poles and Brits breaking Enigma, which requires explaining how it worked. Rock and Roll. Led Zeppelin was at the English country mansion Headley Grange working on their fourth album. While working on the song Four Sticks, named that because Bonham played that song with four drumsticks, Bonham became frustrated and then spontaneously busted out the intro to an old Little Richard song, Keep A-Knockin', and then went into a basic 4-4 time.
Page joined in with an old 50s style guitar riff. Jones joined in with a bass line. Plant threw in some lyrics he'd been working on. In less than an hour they had composed and recorded one of their most iconic songs. That's rock and roll. A small group of guys having fun belting it out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D2lSwosw9xY Posted by: davidt at November 08, 2025 09:33 PM (Q+gd/) 241

So much to weigh in on… Long songs? Generally tiresome, but you won’t soon find a bigger Pink Floyd fan than I am. Whole albums, weaving in stories. Can’t speak enough about all of it, so won’t try. But I will say, headphones, recliner, time, and Dark Side of the Moon. Heard Operations Mindcrime was good; never done it. Now… Dream Theater and Pull Me Under, is an exceptional long songs. Tempo and mood changes are very good. Anyone besides me think that the opening lyrics sound like it was Ian Anderson? Just can’t hear it, ever, without thinking that.
