Saturday Night "Club ONT" November 8, 2025 [The 3 Ds]

20251108-barrels1.jpg

Welcome to Club ONT! A collaboration the 3D's - The Disco, The Dino, and The Doggo. The almighty sammich is on the menu this evening. A great human achievement - and accessible across all tax brackets.

Saturday Night Jokes and Other Funnies

A priest and a rabbi were sitting next to each other on an airplane. After a while, the priest turned to the rabbi and asked, "Is it still a requirement of your faith that you not eat pork?"
The rabbi responded, "Yes, that is still one of our beliefs."

The priest then asked, "Have you ever eaten pork?"

To which the rabbi replied, "Yes, on one occasion I did succumb to temptation and tasted a ham sandwich."

The priest nodded in understanding and went on with his reading.

A while later, the rabbi spoke up and asked the priest, "Is it still a requirement of your church that you remain celibate?

The priest replied, "Yes, that is still very much a part of our faith."

The rabbi then asked him, "Have you ever fallen to the temptations of the flesh?"

The priest replied, "Yes, rabbi, on one occasion I was weak and broke my faith and made love to a woman."

The rabbi nodded understandingly and remained silent, thinking about five minutes.

Finally, the rabbi said, "Beats a fucking ham sandwich, doesn't it?"

Drink of the Night

The peanut butter and jelly sour - turning a classic sandwich into a cocktail

20251108-peanut-butter-and-jelly.jpg

For the Peanut Butter Whisky
500 ml Bourbon Whisky
100 g Peanut butter

For the Drink
60 ml Peanut Butter Whisky
40 ml Lemon juice
30 ml Strawberry jam
1 dash Angostura bitters
1 dash Saline solution (10 grams of salt, 40 grams of water)
1 eggwhite
Miniature PB&J sandwich for garnish

First, prepare the peanut butter whisky. Melt the peanut butter over the stovetop or in a microwave and combine it with the whisky in a jar. Mix it up and let it infuse for a few hours or over night.

Put the peanut butter and whisky mix in the freezer for an hour for the fat to solidify, then remove the solids and strain the remaining liquid through a tea strainer and a coffee filter. This process is a lot more messy than fat washing with "pure" fat (e. g. with lard or coconut oil) and hence requires the somewhat annoying step of filtering through a coffee filter.

Combine all ingredients in a shaker, shake with ice for 20 - 30 seconds and pour into a tumbler filled with ice. Garnish with a miniature PB&J sandwich.

Be honest - would you try this??

Club ONT Sammich Links

Who invented the sandwich? Not sure he invented it, but he gets some credit.

The sandwich, as we know it, is often credited to John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich. Legend has it that during a prolonged gambling session, the Earl requested meat tucked between two pieces of bread to eat without interrupting his game. The convenience of this meal led to its eponymous name. However, the concept of placing meat or other fillings between bread-like layers has ancient precedents.

diablo sammich 11-8.jpg

Give me a Diablo Sandwich, a Dr. Pepper, and make it quick.

It's very possible to eat a sandwich for each meal of the day. You could start with a kaiser roll filled with fluffy eggs and cheese for breakfast, house a po'boy with fried shrimp and hot sauce for lunch, and end with a cheesesteak for dinner. Our point: There's a sandwich for every mood, and we have a lot of them on this guide. Below, you'll find 18 of our favorite sandwiches in cities across the country.

Former DOJ employee, Sean Dunn, the pink shirt DC sandwich thrower that stopped at Subway after his power cleanse had his day in court. He couldn't win a fight against a screen door, but did win in court. Was hoping for minimally some community service - wearing a sandwich board. Words are violence but apparently a thrown sandwich is not. Modern jurisprudence: Mean words = felony. Throwing a ham sandwich at an ICE agent = expressive gesture. Got it.

Amusing. Someone took the time to do a bit of legal research on sandwich as a weapon.

Standing Black (1891) on its head, the Supreme Court in Heller expanded the definition of 'arms' as used in the Second Amendment to include any and all instruments not yet known in the Founding Era, to wit adding the Glock and the AR-15 to the billy club, the Bowie knife, the Arkansas toothpick, the slung shot, and the sword cane (District of Columbia v. Heller, 554 U.S. 570, 200.

It goes without saying, though clearly we are saying it anyway, that the Court's now-expanded definition of what constitutes a weapon not subject to restriction encompasses the sandwich per se, which was known in England in the 1760s and is cited by Jane Austen in 1800, years which span the Founding Era.

Club ONT Proofreading and Editing

Tonight's lesson in humility and embarrassment: What have been some of your most spectacular typos or editing errors - in email, text, or the comment section?

This "D" sent a text to the wife of a friend: I will leave the key in the lick box. Was supposed to be lock box. Not yet lived that one down.

Even the Bible has one of the more spectacular errors. Referred to as the "Wicked Bible."

This legendary edition became known as the "Wicked Bible." King Charles was not amused by the infamous printing blunder. He ordered the Bibles recalled and destroyed, took away Barker's license to print Bibles, and fined him 300 pounds (that was a lifetime of wages in those days). It is believed that only 11 of the original 1,000 Bibles exist today.

Club ONT was brought to you by the Grilled Triple-Decker Hot Dog Sandwich

20251108-Hot Dog sammich.jpg

Exit question: is a "hot dog" also a "sandwich"?

The National Hot Dog and Sausage Council acknowledges that hot dogs were considered sandwiches in the past, but now deserve a category separate from sandwiches. "Limiting the hot dog's significance by saying it's 'just a sandwich' is like calling the Dalai Lama 'just a guy.'"

*****

NOTICE: If a six foot four, muscular man from Brussels offers you a sandwich, beware. Even though he may appear to speak your language, there is a chance that said sandwich might be infected with vegemite.

First time I saw it was with my best friend in the early 70's in the Saturday morning matinee - 50 cents got you a movie, candy and soda. It was about the same time Cher's 'Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves' song was popular. We would sing along changing the chorus to 'gypsies, trampled thieves...' based on the crowd panic scene from Gwangi....

Knowing all this - do you think I'd still be a good fit for a Momeet? Or TMI?

The Big Dummy is a very handsome boy, but he wasn't borned, raised and trained here. In the ring, he will do exactly what you want, but no more than that.

Right now, he lacks that last measure of polish and pride that would take him to the next level. The great Lacey had it in spades. Delilah had it. The Big Dummy doesn't have it yet.

112 Changed the alternator on the small car today. Squeaky bearing, didn't want it to freeze up and trash the belt.
I go off to the YouTube to find out how to check it. Found out.
You want to know why car batteries fail? Car alternators. Now, I can understand the economics involved; most batteries are done in by, basically, neglect, and we couldn't do much better, reliably, in past history, but today, we can do better. Under steady state conditions -not cranking, not recovering from starter discharge, an alternator is considered to be good if it's putting anywhere from 14.2 to 14.7 VDC at the battery.
The old landline phone systems ran off -48 VDC, supplied by huge wet-cell lead-acid batteries. They were never boiled at >14V. They were floated, most of the time, between 13.2 and 13.5V. Designed for, and expected to last 30 years. There were some tricks: equalization cycles, regular distilled water checks and additions, but that 30 years was a minimum. It was not unusual for a CO battery bank to last more than 50 years.
We can build chargers to handle lithium-ion batteries, which are much touched about charging, surely we can control an alternator a little tighter and better.

157 God help me, I find this entertaining:

Getting into an argument with Grok.

I asked: "Is it ever appropriate to order a beer at the bar and drink it out of your shoe?"

Grok said NO. And then gave me a lecture on hygiene and why that behavior is unacceptable and in violation of health codes.

Follow up: " What about Crocs?"

Grok responds "Also, no, and the same hygiene lecture.

My response: "Ha, trick question. Crocs have holes in them, and can't hold beer."

Grok: "True, but the Bistro Pro Clog has no holes."

Me: "Are you malfunctioning, Grok. Crocs have not back piece, the beer would just flow out."

Grok: There is a strap in the back that could be used to keep the beer in the Bistro Pro Clog

Me: Grok, are you you encouraging and instructing me how to drink beer out of my shoe. I thought you said it was a hygiene issue?

Grok: You are being confrontational.

The snake deal is more analogous to the limit on folding paper. Eventually you reach a point where the material itself cannot sustain the force required to double it. Eventually, the snake would be coiled so tightly that all its spinal joints were at their fullest limit of extension, and try as it might, it could bend no further.

209 It’s heat, and vibration, that kills batteries generally speaking. “Batteries die in July, they just don’t keel over till January”. Or the first cold snap anyway.

The 12 volt system battery debuted in 1956, since that time they’ve been hanging more and more stuff off it, demanding more. Particularly bad are the “phantom loads” that place a small draw on a constant basis. Security systems, and various black boxes that don’t shut down right a way even when working right.

Lead acid chemistry charging was hashed out a hundred years ago. A good old “dumb” charger is still the best bang for the buck. The 6/2 amp charger made by the gazillions by Schumacher. Have to monitor the voltage, or use a timer. But they will do a better job. The key is to understand that battery charge voltages are temperature dependent, a correction factor applies. Without a temperature compensated charger, it will generally be under or over charged (as in a car). 14.7 isn’t even a float charge when it gets cold enough, and it’s way too much in hot weather, plus sitting next to a hot engine. i always thought they should he in clear plastic, as a visual to see sulfation.

Mostly right, for North American passenger cars and light trucks. There were 12 volt vehicles made during WWII, IIRC any vehicle made to carry a radio was 12 volts. My 1944 M29 Weasel has a 12 volt, negative ground system, and it's all heavy-duty stuff, too. Brit cars were 12 volts from the early '50's.

So, you buy at age 30... and have payments until you are 80? 15 years past the normal retirement age...

And pay boo Koo interest the whole time? This is a banksters dream.

236 Yes, trivia aside, my point here is that the 12 volt battery is fairly inadequate for modern cars and trucks with all the gizmos and gee gaws on it. A/C, high output stereos window heaters, seat heaters, the list is endless.

Starting batteries are constructed in such a way they are designed to provide short bursts of high amps for a split second - many thin plates with a high surface area. Their only purpose is to start the engine, that’s it.

They do provide a bit of a buffer for spikes and sags, but the engine generator or alternator is intended to carry the load. They do not “like” being discharged down very much. A modern car or truck battery is almost always in a somewhat partial state of discharge, and this builds up a sulfation that becomes permanent.

They talked about 24 or 36 volt systems for years but it hasn’t happened yet.

241 Most people remember LeMay for saying “Bomb them back to the stone age”; which he didn’t actually say. Go figure.

He was an incredible individual. He is widely mischaracterized. Go figure. He was of the opinion that going to war is a hell of a thing, and should not be taken lightly. But if the decision is made, you don’t screw around. He saw this in Korea, and was not happy with their strategy. The “Whiz Kids” like McNamara did not align with this. They thought they could “limited war” Viet Nam.

I would assume USD. I don't know if there are any pharmacies in Panama that would ship Ivermectin to the USA. I know pharmacies in Canada that sell the stuff are crazy expensive. Mexico is about 4 bucks per tablet. Price went up when it became popular. When I am in Apache Junction, I usually try to make a day trip to Los Algodones in Mexico to buy pharma stuff. Most of my presciptions are sold OTC there. I bought Ivermectin and HCQ there on my last trip, and it was not particularly cheap, but at least it was available. In Algodones, their entire market is Gringo tourists.

That tower of barrels looks pretty unstable. Would not climb on it.

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at November 09, 2025 12:51 AM (npFr7)

252 Stationary batteries, lead-acid types used for phone co. would last about 30 years from what I’ve read. They probably didn’t use starting batteries, something more like a deep cycle. Automotive start batteries are more prone to plate breakage (due to shock and vibration).

I am having a little trouble keeping the RV battery up to snuff. It’s a little undersized, and the RV charger isn’t really intended for boondocking.

Partial discharges and recharges work OK for a deep cycle battery for a while, maybe a week or so, but under heavy use sooner or later it will choke, and needs to be fully recharged and equalized. Even under ordinary circumstances 120% of a charge needs to be returned to get back to 100%, and 30% of the ampere capacity is in that last 90% to 100% fully charged status.

What I really need is a 25 amp old school charger. I’ve never seen one that big, except in those big rollout chargers with engine start capability.

What does work really great, is using a Variac and the old 2/6 Schumacher. It’s a DIY variable DC supply this way.

I have one of those big rollout chargers with booster. Useful, indeed. I also have a 5 amp charger run off a Variac, and that is my go-to bench charger. I have one of those little plastic "charger-rejuvenators" with the flashing LEDs, but I think it has become partly crippled, and I don't trust it anymore. worked great when it was new, though.

And I have a bunch of 2 amp to 10 amp chargers, too. I have one big old one that used an autotransformer and a Tungar bulb rectifier, that I put a silicon diode bridge into, which can charge 36 volt golf cart battery banks if put to that task. Being an autotransformer, it's not isolated from the line, though, so kind of scary to use.

258 It’s probably stable, I see some boards across each barrel course? I was wondering about the compression strength or whatever it’s called, of the barrel stays, in the bottom barrels. One bad stay, one bad barrel. It only takes one bad barrel to spoil the whole apple, maybe.

You'll note there are planks or panels between each course of barrels. My guess is you are seeing all the barrels right there in that pic, and the stack is built up around a grain silo, or some other kind of stable tower as a stunt. There would be no good reason to stack barrels that high in the normal course of business.

261 There is a difference between cranking batteries and deep-cycle batteries, and standby batteries that are meant to be kept on float their entire life.
Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon
-----
Crank & deep cycle, yes, but those CO batteries were pulled off float almost every day. The ac/dc converters were sized to carry the load except for high usage times. Then the batteries picked up the load. Not as fast a discharge as cranking, but as deep.

The high power dump that auto alternatives do is because the battery may well have to start the car again, after a 5 minute run to the liquor store. My complaint is that they could (today) be fairly easily designed to run the high power to recharge, but then drop back to high float, instead of pumping unneeded current at almost 15V, which just turns into heat and lost electrolyte.
