Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Trump Strikes Deal With Big Pharma to Reduce *American* Prices for Weight Loss Drugs Ozempic and MounjaroWell, with all of the angst about the economy and Trump spending too much focus on foreign policy, I guess this is helpful. Supposedly, the price would drop, eventually, to $245 per month for those paying cash. We'll see. U.S. President Donald Trump, Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk unveiled a deal on Thursday to slash the prices of popular GLP-1 weight‑loss drugs for the government's Medicare and Medicaid programs, as well as for cash payers. The move is aimed at increasing access to the treatments through U.S. Medicare for people aged 65 and over and the Medicaid program for low-income people, which together provide healthcare coverage for nearly half of all Americans. U.S. patients currently pay by far the most for prescription medicines, often nearly three times more than in other developed nations, and Trump has been pressuring drugmakers to lower their prices to what patients pay elsewhere. "GLP-1s have been top of mind and not just because of the cardiometabolic benefits that they provide, but also because it is an issue of fairness and utilization and pricing and access and affordability for the American people," an administration official told reporters. Starter doses of rival weight‑loss pills being developed by Lilly and Novo, if approved, will cost $149 per month for all Medicare and Medicaid enrollees and via the White House's new direct-to-consumer site, TrumpRx, senior administration officials said. For currently available injectable GLP-1s used for diabetes and other covered health issues, prices would fall to $245 per month for patients with Medicare or Medicaid, they said. On TrumpRx, the average price of injectables and pills will start at or below $350 monthly and is expected to trend downward to $245 within two years.I tried to get on Mounjaro. The cost was something obscene like $1400 per month, but you could sign up for a coupon and "only" pay $550 or something. $350 would be expensive but, I guess, obtainable. Think about all the money I'd save on Ho-Ho's. In Medicare, patients' co-pays will be capped at $50 a month, officials said.

The cash price should be capped at $50. Expecting taxpayers to pay for others healthcare, who then get cheaper meds than they can purchase, is obscene. Still, it’s a step in the right direction. Posted by: Disinterested FDA Director at November 06, 2025 01:15 PM (l3YAf) 8

Back in college, when I did not need to lose weight but we would now and then take "Fastin" or something to study. There was an amazing diet pill called "Preludin" or similar, as I did not pay attention to spellings of drugs for college exams...and while I sound like a druggie I only took them a couple of times. Possible thyroid tumors, including cancer: Ozempic has a boxed warning for the risk of thyroid C-cell tumors based on animal studies. Symptoms include a lump or swelling in the neck, hoarseness, trouble swallowing, or shortness of breath.
Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas): Symptoms include severe, persistent stomach pain that may radiate to the back, with or without vomiting. Gallbladder problems: Can cause severe stomach pain, fever, nausea, and vomiting. Kidney problems (kidney injury/failure): Dehydration from severe vomiting and diarrhea can lead to kidney issues. Symptoms include a decrease in the amount of urine, swelling in the ankles, hands, or feet, and unusual tiredness. Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia): More likely if used with other diabetes medications like insulin or a sulfonylurea. Symptoms include sweating, shakiness, dizziness, confusion, or blurry vision. Serious allergic reactions: Symptoms include swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat, severe rash or itching, trouble breathing, or a fast heartbeat. Changes in vision: Especially in people with diabetic retinopathy. Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at November 06, 2025 01:19 PM (XeU6L) 37

Outlawing all junk on SNAP and free school meals would be WAY cheaper and likely healthier than popping a pill. Mandating daily exercise in schools for 45-60 minutes daily would also help. I could go on, but there's ways to do it that are cheaper and healthier than pill popping for those without the serious diseases this was studied for.

I'm not bragging and God bless people who truly are suffering with weight (although not due to gluttony) but I lost 45 lbs 6 years ago and have kept it off. Maybe in a few years when other people have tested it, but this seems very risky, long term.
By the time I started on it in 2022, Mounjaro had been in testing and trials for over a decade. I didn't start this without some serious "due diligence". I haven't had any side effects. Well, except for decreased appetite, which was sort of the whole point. Everyone on the early forums talked about "food noise" being gone for the first time in their lives. I found that to be the case as well Mind you, when I was a kid/teenager, I only weighed 100 pounds dripping wet. SOMETHING happened to change my metabolism when I hit 18. I had Lipedema and didn't know it. Ironically, a low-fat, high grain-based diet - like the one that was pushed so long by "experts" seems to have been the catalyst for massive obesity over the past 20-30 years. I'm not entirely in favor of these weight loss drugs. Maybe to get started but in the long run they will not get the health benefits of exercise and once off the drug will most likely back to overeating if they don't learn self discipline. Sort of like people that use liposuction and surgeries to remove fat. Doctors need to be telling people to put down the chips get off the couch and start by going for long walks and continually stepping up the level of exercise until you get results.

When I was at 355 and death’s door, I asked my doctor about Ozempic and got an rx which was affordable due to pre-diabetic dx. Good news, it was effective- I did 3 cycles over 12 weeks at the lowest dose and went keto. Bads news, it was very uncomfortable. No hunger, but significant nausea, couldn’t even stomach the thought of eating for first two or three days, even a glass of water made me puke. Energy levels way down, but exercised anyway to burn fat, maintain muscle. Great news is I lost 100 pounds on it (and another 70 since). Key is maintaining lifestyle changes after you get off. Not saying it was easy for me, but I’d always been an athlete before getting so fat, so it really just felt like returning to my “true” self.

Because the minority of Americans who are net positive economically productive subsidize the whole world. Whether it’s drugs, or the welfare state, USAID, playing World Police, or creating breakthroughs in science and technology. With drugs it’s pretty simple: if they weren’t cheap, the Europoors wouldn’t be able to afford them, and they’d be more expensive for Americans, or financially unviable. It’s the same as selling HIV drugs in Africa for pennies. Posted by: Disinterested FDA Director at November 06, 2025 01:51 PM (l3YAf) 247

so you can say that but when I lost a ton of weight, my energy went way up. Another way to say that is: When I was heavy, I had low energy, which was a big impediment to doing exercise (or most other work) and which in turn made me gain more weight. Obesity is a syndrome that enforces and expands the syndrome and protects the syndrome from being undone. Posted by: ace at November 06, 2025 01:51 PM (1wjle) 248
Mind you, I could always lose weight by starving myself. But I could NEVER lose weight/volume in my lower body (I developed massive thighs and abdomen), and when the weight crept back on, it would ALWAYS go to those areas.
CLASSIC Lipedema, but nobody knew that back then. The Hell of it is, that the body/s6stem of a person with Lipedema keeps craving more and more "fuel" to keep things going, and it is RELENTLESS. So yes, there are people who are just fat pigs, but my guess is that more of them have undiagnosed Lipedema. And FTR, Lipedema is a Connective Tissue Disorder. Pharma has a lot in common with software, where developing the “first version” you can sell is very expensive, but every “copy” is pretty cheap. Drugs are typically cheap to manufacture, so you can still profit from selling them at $0.10 /pill, but you need rich people (Americans) to pay $10 /pill to foot development costs, or the whole thing is non-viable.
Selling for $0.10 /pill in Europe makes sense if you’re still turning a profit on each pill, because you’re tapping into a market that you wouldn’t get if you sold for $5 /pill everywhere on Earth. Posted by: Disinterested FDA Director at November 06, 2025 01:58 PM (l3YAf) 293

I've been trying a 36-hour fast once a week, and eating only one main meal on other days. Weight loss has still been fairly slow. Steady, but slow. I'm determined to avoid any kind of drugs. I gave up smoking seven years ago, and it turned out not to be all that difficult, so I'm hoping that a permanent reduction in the volume of food intake will be manageable.
The fasting is mostly just mind over matter. And I feel significantly more energized at the end of a fast. Posted by: Paco at November 06, 2025 02:04 PM (mADJX) 325

Also there is the study by the Indian physician who noted that Indian chickens are much fatter than American chickens fed the same diet and traced the cause to a virus. Given the virus, the American chickens were just as fat as the Indian chickens. The virus also effects humans the same way as it does chickens. An obese person with low cholesterol likely has been infected with that virus.

A lot of people know those who just can't keep weight off, and some ARE amazingly efficient at packing on pounds.
But you cannot escape simple physics and thermodynamics: it is not possible to gain weight by breathing. They *are* eating something to convert to fat. The magical fat fairy is not visiting them at night, and there are further refinements to diet possible, often what you eat vs quantity. It may not seem fair that it is harder for them, but keep in perspective that 3/4 of a century ago almost NOBODY was overweight. It is diet, exercise, and the types of environmental exposure issues people like to pick on RFK jr about If the new drugs prove safe long term that is great and for some people it's very difficult, but don't let anyone tell you they literally can't Posted by: heya at November 06, 2025 02:07 PM (6SZeR) Posted by: LizLem at November 06, 2025 02:07 PM (Eng1Z) 347

An AI summary of why Brendan got fat (hopefully he will allow them to hire a stunt double in Mummy 4 and not do his own stunts!):
Brendan Fraser's back injury is due to years of performing his own stunts, which required a laminectomy and other surgeries. The "fat" aspect of his recent public image relates to his role in the 2022 film The Whale, where he wore a prosthetic fat suit weighing up to 300 pounds to portray a 600-pound character, which impacted his mobility on set. His subsequent weight loss was a gradual process driven by his return to health, which involved a focus on exercise, diet, and mental well-being. Discounting GLP-1s is a TERRIBLE "deal". We don't even know what happens 5-10 years down the road. They are FULL of serious side-effects. I can't believe you want to use that poison, Ace.

$1400/mo?
Try out a Humira at $6000/mo. For conditions that are physically painful and have long term consequences if not treated. Keytruda $12,000/dose. Zolgensma $2.1M for a one-time dose. Posted by: AB at November 06, 2025 02:21 PM (ArLSQ) 406
I guess Tom Cruise got away with doing his own stunts because he's, uh, short. Fraser is tall.
Tall players are constantly getting injured. Yao Ming was notorious for being a star in Houston who maybe played 2/3 of the games, so in the end didn't help Houston much. Also Larry Bird lost his last years at the NBA because, careful-enough on the court, he threw out his back laying asphalt on his mom's driveway. Anonosaurus Wrecks, how does Ozempic affect your energy levels and inflammation?
Posted by: vmom deport deport deport No inflammation I've noticed. Modest increase in energy but whether that is distinct from the weight loss I don't know. Posted by: Anonosaurus Wrecks, Oh yeah? Well, You're Another One! at November 06, 2025 02:21 PM (L/fGl) 408

I drink my coffee iced with just a tsp. of half and half. My daughter drinks her coffee with a shit ton of the flavored creamers - Coffee Mate Vanilla, hazelnut, etc. One morning I ran out of mine and added just a tsp. of hers to my coffee. I had to throw it out. It tasted so bad and one look at the ingredients tells you why.

FWIW I've been on Wegovy now for about a year. I'm ramped up to the max dose.
I've lost 55lbs. As a Type 1 diabetic. It took away my desire to over eat. I feel full after eating a normal portioned meal. I have been working out in the gym for about 2 years now with a personal trainer and it wasn't until Wegovy when I actually started to lose weight and quickly. So quick in fact I'm on a high protein diet now. I also combined it with a 5x a week treadmill, situps and pushups routine as soon as I get out of bed. I was expecting to lose all of this weight and look like a Spartan Hoplite afterwards. Unfortunately it looks like I just have a Dad Bod. Which is fine because it gives me more motivation to get in better shape. Posted by: Defenestratus at November 06, 2025 02:49 PM (WYStd) 415

Way up above, somebody mentioned Tony Shaloub and a series "Breaking Bread". I'll have to watch it. My Dad, the Finn baker would probably like it. Everybody would like some fresh, hot, pulla slathered in butter with their coffee.

I think that, regardless of how long they've been studied so far, the potential of GLP-1s has only begun to be plumbed. On the one hand, compounding pharmacies making mini-doses for rich people who can afford to pay out of pocket for a lifestyle boost. On the other hand, there have only been bare hints that they may also work for Alcohol Use Disorder, which is plausible and massive.
One of the things that makes alcohol abuse so intransigent is that is in fact also a food with metabolizable calories, so the hunger process can get mixed in with the neuronal addiction effects. And, that is exactly what makes me believe the early word that GLP-1s can work for AUD. Keep in mind the parable of the prodigal son, remember how much damage alcoholics do every day to not only their own lives but also their families and their community, and set aside your puritanical instincts. This will be a huge boon for the whole country, if true. Posted by: SciVo at November 06, 2025 03:16 PM (VB5xp) Processing 0.09, elapsed 0.0806 seconds. |
