Daily Tech News 6 November 2025

Top Story

  • A survey has found that 72% of game developers say Steam is effectively a monopoly in the PC gaming market. (TechSpot)

    No it hasn't.
In a survey of over 300 executives from large US and UK game companies, 72% either slightly or strongly agreed that Steam constitutes a monopoly over PC games.
So by "developers" you mean... Not developers.
Many customers are so adamant about only purchasing games through Steam that the industry's largest publishers, including EA, Ubisoft, and even Microsoft, have tried - and failed - to withhold their titles from the service.
Because Steam works. The competitors less so.

The one standout is GOG, which gets in your way even less than Steam.

Tech News

  • AMD reported its quarterly results and the news is all good. (Tom's Hardware)

"Client" product sales - that is, the CPUs normal humans buy - were up 46% to $2.8 billion. Gaming revenue soared by 181% to $1.3 billion, though the market is still dominated by Nvidia and AMD's gains are a result of moving from "adequate" to "pretty good" rather than stealing the market lead.

Total revenue was $9.2 billion for the quarter, up 36% from last year, and profits were up 61% to $1.2 billion.

  • The password for the Louvre's video surveillance system was "Louvre". (PC Gamer)

    Oh.

  • SK Hynix - Hyundai's memory chip division - has shown off its roadmap for the next few years. (Tom's Hardware)

You can't afford to look at it.

Pricing problems aside, DDR5 is going to be with us for a while. DDR6 is not expected until 2029 or 2030. Updates like MRDIMM Gen2 are set to double the speed of DDR5 by the simple trick of using two banks of chips at once, so we'll probably be fine.

  • Unicode footguns in Python. (Python Koans)

(A footgun is a gun designed explicitly for shooting yourself in the foot.)

I've said before that Unicode is a semantic Superfund site, and Python has been around longer than Unicode - though not by much - so it's not surprising that some things are painful.

I do wonder though if there are any programming languages where Unicode is not painful. Unicode attempts to create a single character set merging every human language in history despite the fact that the rules resolving said characters are often mutually contradictory.

    It's a mess.

  • Speaking of messes the October Windows 11 update is triggering BitLocker recovery on some systems. (Bleeping Computer)

This is where you boot your PC up and are met by a demand for your BitLocker password, usually despite you never having heard of BitLocker in your life and certainly not having consciously set it up with a password.

Meaning - if you don't have another PC handy to research the workaround this time - your data is being held ransom by your own computer.

Microsoft had a similar bug back in May. And July last year. And August of 2022.

Windows 10's lack of updates looks better every day.

Not At All Tech News

  • My house has artificial turf at one side and the rear (between the house and a retaining wall) which the builders told me they put in because keeping a lawn alive in those areas would be too much work.

I tried to talk them down a bit on the price because I knew I wanted to replace it with something less plastic, but they weren't having it, and it was a sellers market right then with a big chunk of NSW under water.

Anyway, I had a sudden thought today that the surface under the fake grass was rather hard underfoot, and if for some reason they had concreted it that would drastically limit my options. (I'm thinking of a mix of pavers and pebbles, maybe a couple of strategic shrubs, but shrubs don't grow well in concrete unless you really don't want them to).

    Peeled back a segment.

Nope. Just packed earth. All good.

The one standout is GOG, which gets in your way even less than Steam.

A lot of the companies do it, but Rockstar, Ubisoft and Epic are a complete pain in the ass with all of the registration you have to do to first and then you have to get their launcher to open the game, which, as far as I can tell, does absolutely nothing other than sit there and advertise stuff you can buy.

Back in the day all you had to do was make sure the CD was in the tray, and there were software cracks you could download to get around that.

18 Pixy, there are different grass types you can buy now that are engineered to grow in harsh conditions. I’m no grass expert, well at least not the grass you can mow, but there’s probably a type of grass you can buy that will grow where you are, They have some hybrid grasses that will practically grow anywhere as long as they have a water source.

20 Regarding the Steam stuff: It's natural for people to deal with one storefront. Nobody wants to have a dozen different accounts and learn a dozen different interfaces, even if the one they go with might not be the best in all respects. That's why Amazon is so dominant in retail.

I'm glad publishers feel like they need to provide their games on Steam, because that's where I buy my games.

59 I've been leaning more towards GOG than Steam as of late. Owning the software is a nice thing and they are doing a lot of great work in bringing back old games.

The advantage with Steam is they tend to get the new releases first and I can easily move the game files from one hard drive to another.

And both companies have the attitude of "Our customers are the reason we exist" instead of treating them like talking meat bags that owe them money for existing.

I'll just do what I always do at times like this: Wait two or three years until the demand collapses (because it always goes in cycles) and the manufacturers and supply chain suddenly are stuck with a massive glut of memory they can't move at the prices they were demanding.

In the meantime though, it's going to suck for anyone needing a new system to replace a failed old one.

I could probably mount some larger pieces outside between the unit and the brick window opening . . . but they would be somewhat open at the top, and rainwater could pool inside. Better to leave it as it is for now.

I have a slight leak in the bedroom window too. It's not noticeable except in cold weather. I'll slide a piece of the remaining insulation in there as a temporary fix. No doubt the cats will knock it out, but I can replace it.

74 Wolfus, I pull the window unit in my shop office out for the winter and put a thick piece of foam insulation in there. It's impossible to stop the leaks around and thru the unit.

The third thing I do on a new Windows 10 or 11 system is:
- Fully decrypt all Bitlocker encrypted drives
- Configure Bitlocker to not encrypt any drives
- Kneecap Bitlocker so it won't run. (Thing is, I can't trust Microsoft not to, in future at some point, push a forced update to resurrect Bitlocker from the grave I put it in.)

I haven't had issues with Win10, the first thing I did with Win11 is decide that I'd never install it. At that point, issues with Win11 falls into two categories:

- if I know the person who's having the issue, I feel bad for them... a little... no, really, maybe they have to use it for work or something.
- if I don't know the person... I mostly ignore it. Sometimes I giggle a bit.

But it's definitely on the two Lenovo laptops I've bought since 2021. I think the BL keys are on a USB thumbdrive somewhere... I hope.

For most everything you need for photo editing CS2 is perfectly fine.

But I gotta admit Photoshop's newer AI integrations is really helpful, especially for masking and retouching, even generating background and "harmonizing" lighting in composites.

I'm impressed by those aspects but everything else is pretty much the same as in 2005.

Plodding along with getting the references for my book properly cited and put into EndNote. About 2/3 of the way through the first tranche of 1700.

Then I have to do a second tranche of about 1300. But between the two, there's a gap in time from about 2000 to 2004 that has to be filled in.

I've found that almost all the references worth citing come from just a few publishers: the American Chemical Society, the Royal Society of Chemistry, Wiley, Elsevier, Taylor and Francis, and Springer. All of them have search functions on their sites.

Having said that, there really is an energy and excitement to living in a big city that cannot be replicated in a town or or burg.

It's also a tough town to live in so if you can make a go of it, you want some street cred for your troubles.

It's completely unaffordable now so I really don't know how people afford to make rent, so since you are spending most of your money on rent and can't go anywhere, the city becomes the only place you experience.

It essentially becomes part of your identity.

You've seen people who when you asked them where they are exclaim NYC with an air of, how do you like that.

I've never been in a situation where a church attempted to replace Jesus with the Blessed Virgin. I've always viewed her as an obedient servant of God. Some speculate that this is a way to bring in converts since no other Christian faith pays much attention to Mary and they feel uncomfortable with the Catholic's veneration of her. I've always viewed the inclusion of Mary as tradition.

234 People since 1926 have been trying to get Mary elevated to co-redemptrix? I wonder if the Jesuits were involved. But it gained momentum in the past 30 years this idea. So here we are with the Pope saying "nope."

Good for the Pope! I guess I shouldn't speak for Mary, but it's clear from Scripture that she was a humble woman, so I think she would reject being called a "Co- Redemptrix"

GOG's only real weakness is a lack of Japanese games compared to Steam.

Not that there are none at all, but there are so many on Steam that I wish were on GOG.

did they ever get Steam to work in a Linux environment?

the kids tried years ago but never got it to work in Linux

Posted by: fd at November 06, 2025 07:47 AM (vFG9F)

251 I have not read up why they were pushing this 'co-redemptrix' idea so hard but at a guess the argument was being built on an expansive interpretation of Catholic doctrine of Mary being born without Original Sin.

Yes. Pretty much any game which doesn't require online anti-cheat will work on Linux.

253 GOG games pretty much work on Linux also although I believe that's because Valve did the heavy lifting already.

265 At this point, if you're still putting up with Windows 11, and supporting H1B Visas (whose idiocy is causing these technical problems, because they are NOT skilled engineers, they're complete frauds who got a fake degree from a diploma mill and can't do the job they were hired to do, so all they're good for is giving their nepotistic manager kick backs for hiring them), you kind of get what you deserve.

Switch to Linux. And End the H1B Visa.
