6 Ridiculously beautiful sunny hot day here in Israel.

Not the weather we need.

Took a swim yesterday in the pool. Water temp was 20C/68F. Trying to hide my runny nose from Mrs. BD and her "I told you so."

19 genius.com:

According to the band, “Whip It” was inspired by the poems in Thomas Pynchon’s novel Gravity’s Rainbow.

Gravity’s Rainbow is a satirical novel that describes humanity’s evolution as often regressive and lacking self-awareness. This also ties into their band name “Devo” standing de-evolution. A satire into the idea that our society is regressing.

As it relates to Whip It, Devo is satirizing America’s insistence on violence and our lack of individuality.

Thanks, G & R; I did read that. The instructions that came with my clock echoed a lot of that, which is how I knew to put the clock in the window that faces west toward CO. The clock currently hangs on a wall not far from the microwave and refrigerator, as well as far from a window. I'm not surprised it can't update from WWVB where it is.

"The West Wing"? Oh, do fuck right off, you pretentious mid-wits.

Well over 80% of the things on those lists I had not watched or otherwise consumed even a first time, so it's for damn sure there would be no "over and over".

Finally, any "Star Trek" after TOS is smothered by its pervasive underlying bureaucrats in space atmosphere. Tea. Earl Grey. Not.

The clock currently hangs on a wall not far from the microwave and refrigerator, as well as far from a window. I'm not surprised it can't update from WWVB where it is."

Using Google Maps, from NOLA to WWVB, you're 1,119 miles (as the crow flies) from the broadcasting tower, and it's pretty much NW from you.

For me, it's 1,446 miles, almost due west and just a bit south. My clock is in my kitchen on an inner wall but it does face west, and there's a glass window between the old section it's in and a newer extension and there's also a window from that extension nearby so... perhaps it has a proper signal path.

One more factor to consider is the quality and length of the antenna inside the clock itself.

If you want to dig into it more, I found a Canadian supplier that sells components or kits for WWVB based clock development and projects:
https://tinyurl.com/39cwpy5p

The antennas they use are tuned to 60 Hz. I'll have to crack open my atomic clock to have a look at the antenna.

Yeah, and this morning I'm dealing with a change that a fucking CHIEF engineer put in just before going on vacation for a week which breaks everything and is no longer a simple revert because no one actually looks to see if their shit is good.

Fortunately, in 6 weeks I'll never have to care again.

56 If I really wanted to geek out, I'd buy one of those development kits, and figure out how to build both a WWVB based clock plus a Linux based NTP time server, with wifi connectivity to serve my local network routers.

Sadly, I don't really have the time anymore, otherwise that could be a really cool project.

One of the biggest reasons for my retirement last Spring was that I was trapped on a project where the customer PM was a sociopath who demanded that the whole team of 17 people meet for 1 hour (assuming no overrun) 5 days a week. Normally, only 3-4 people actually said anything during these meetings. Reached a point where I could no longer stand it.

Reminds me of someone asking how to gracefully bow out of a meeting that had nothing to do with them. The answer was reaching out to the coordinator and saying this: "Hey, can you tell me what this is about?" Once you get the answer. "OK, I don't really have anything to contribute but I'll keep an eye out for the summary afterward and direct questions to you."

86 > AI that can automate science will create huge value

It may well do. The problem with AI from an investment perspective is it is currently an almost perfectly competitive market. No-one can charge anything close to the value users are extracting.

There are potential lock-ins that may allow some companies to charge a little more (e.g. if they have all your history there will be some cost to switching). But nowhere near enough to justify their valuations.

Money doesn't exist because replicator technology eliminated scarcity.

She was not woke; and she was an SF giant in a very tiny body. (Her size was basically never mentioned back then, because people were polite.)

Judy liked making money, but she also encouraged lots of different styles of writing fantasy. She basically brought to fruition the work of many others, in making fantasy a real genre with many subgenres, instead of a scattershot topic of occasional novels and short stories. Her death was a loss to the field that still has not been repaired, but that is hardly her fault.

The government needs to investigate:

- if the person 'receiving' benefits is entitled to those benefits

- if the person 'receiving' benefits actually uses those benefits

and then they need to adjust both what is purchasable and the amount granted.
