Even as we enter the bounty and prosperity of America's Golden Age, some of us remain... cheap. No, frugal, that's it. Some of us also can use cigars that are suitable for organic tree farming, processing brass, organizing our collections of Field & Stream, some version of golf, etc. Sticks that are enjoyable but not expensive. Herewith quick looks at 5 sticks I have found to fit this description. They all come as singles and five-packs, but I've used the bundle pricing (usually 20 sticks) here. Tabacos Baez - a Cuban sandwich (the filler consists partly of short-filler, usually scraps of tobacco from the cutting and rolling of premium cigars) from My Father cigars, the Garcias. Burn line was pretty well behaved for a Cuban sandwich. Draw and smoke volume were good. Flavor profile was a nice earthy maduro one, with hints of sweetness that by the second half had faded, leaving earth and dark woods. Nice stick. ($53 a box of 20, corona vitola) Rico Barato Maduro - an exclusive of Cigars Daily in Phoenix. Was surprised how nice this one is. Burns well, and not fast, as some find with Cuban sandwich cigars.; A light maduro profile and abundant smoke. Really a decent stick. ($65 a bundle of 20, torpedo) Rico Barato Connecticut - the other stick in the Rico Barato line. Construction was fine, flavor profile was towards the very light wood side, touch of bitterness at points as is not uncommon for connecticuts. ($65 a bundle of 20, torpedo) Flor de Oliva corojo - Oliva has a whole line of long-filler bundle-priced sticks, Flor de Oliva, which also come in Original, Maduro, and Connecticut versions. The corojo has a nice mellow flavor profile with a hint of spice and a tangy finish. ($59 a bundle of 20, torpedo) Quorum Natural - Nice solid basic cigar with a medium habano profile and pleasant tobacco flavors. Quorum now has a natural or "Classic", connecticut, and maduro version. This (the Classic) was usually my golf cigar a few years ago. ($38 a bundle of 20, robusto) Artisan Tabak - an exclusive (AFAIK) of Atlantic Cigars. A barber pole, with habano and maduro wrapper. A very nice mellow tobacco sweetness to this one, with a medium-bodied core of rich tobacco flavor. Out of a bundle of 20, only one had any construction issues, and was still salvageable. A favorite. ($57 a bundle of 20, robusto)Bigly excellent, rhomboid! Thank you very much for doing this!

But as I think I mentioned the other week I have started the process of building another rifle platform.
I have started by purchasing a scope.
The one I got this time is a NightForce NXS 8-32X56.
The rifle will be purchased at the beginning of next year.

I decided to go hunting for a slower yet accurate load for the 30.06.
The 168 grain Hornady ELD M bullets were pulled off the shelf for my initial attempts at accurate yet less punishing.
I'll be darned if things didn't go exactly the way Weasel San advised. I did a ladder test and watched groups close up as velocity increased slightly.
Initial results were promising but I decided I'd do some testing with different weight bullets.
And the results are in: 178 G Hornady ELD M's will have to enter a shoot off with 174 Grain Hornady ELD VT bullets. The 168 grain bullets couldn't keep up.
Though, the 174's are going to have to work very hard because I got the 178's under 1/2 MOA @ 100 yards.

The rifle I am looking at will have a removable muzzle brake.
My current rifle has a muzzle break on it but is also removable.
If I lived in a freer State I would do what RI Red did and put a suppressor on it.

We have several of those Israeli bandages on hand. Haven't had to use any yet but they are part of our home and car first aid kits.
Heads up. At least on ours the instructions are written on the wrapper so be careful when opening it.
BTW, that tip in the video about a quick and easy way to apply more pressure was helpful.

Anybody know anything about UTG red dot scopes? My brother has an AR he bought 11 years ago that has the red dot and magnifier. Its what the store sold him. I set them up today for him, since he hasn't done a damn thing with any of it since he bought it. They look pretty nice, solid quick release, glass is clear. I checked amazon and I was surprised the combo is around $200 or less. They almost looked too nice to be in that price range. I figured they would cost more.

It is! I didn't have any #10 solid wire, so I used stranded automotive wire, all of a foot for each lead, that pass through a pipe nipple from the outlet box to the panel. Should anything short to ground, the breaker will pop. And all the wire is behind metal covers.

Range report, just more random gun testing, this time testing a IWB holster for my XD45. Said XD45 had two failures to eject. Which...baffles me. This is an old gun maybe a spring or extractor is breaking down. The XD platform has been as reliable as my Glocks.
Oh well, XD45 is demoted from EDC until I get that figured out. I'm back to PSA Dagger with red dot.
Also tested a full sized Canik TP9SF, which ran just fine. 18 rounds and so much better than the old Steyr GB.
Also, rapid fire drills, like with Dot Torture Drills are slower and less accurate in .45 compared to 9mm. I mean, they were almost all kill shots at 5 yards but hitting the 2" dots was not consistent.
Oh well, XD45 is demoted from EDC until I get that figured out. I'm back to PSA Dagger with red dot.

I bought a few back when I was going to do some serious wilderness POTA / SOTA a few years ago; never needed it, yay, but a refresher was a good thing to have all the same.

Only reason I put one on my rifle was to cut down on recoil. But I can toughen up and take the recoil like a man.

The DMV MGC met up for the first time since Texas and had a full complement:Blaster, Sra Blster, Ed L, Iris, Hrothgar and myself.
I wanted to try some of the hints about sighting from last week but that kind got lost when I found i could shoot my Glocks without the patch. Did especially well with the G48 with the Holosun green dot and adequate with the G48 without. iris brought her EP9 and got to shoot some at 15 yds.
It was fun.

Evening AOP. I observed that brake light situation you noted at TXMoMe on my wife's Yukon. We took it in for repair and had the shop look at the light, and they gave it a clean bill of health. Yesterday, when she touched the brakes to slow down, both brake lights lit up -- but after she used her left turn signal, no brake light on that side.

Can't do any shooting or reloading with this damn tendonitis in the right hand. (Not a serious matter, just massively annoying.) So for the pipe smokers in the crowd, I tried some Sutliff Burley J4 blend this week. So flavorful and pleasant I ordered a pound. It's like your favorite codger blend on steroids.
If you are looking to add to your pipe inventory, give a look at 4TH Generation pipes from Stokkebye and Rossi Mezzanotte line of pipes. I have several of each and they have all been excellent smokers. The Rossi are especially good values.

Yes, by quite a bit. However, I believe it's mostly due to weight and not because it's designed to reduce recoil.

We had over 200 Trick-or-Treaters - I know this because we made up 225 treat bags and ran out of them! There were still Trick-or-Treaters coming, so next year we will make more 🎃🧙♀️🎃
We also decided that next year we will also hand out "Fairy Wands" - lighted sticks - to all of the kids so that they can be seen by any drivers on our street. We live in a historic district with lots of old trees; the neighborhood lights are historically accurate, and it can be hard to see much of anything at night thanks to the tree branches.
We put several of those wands along our fence line and the sidewalk leading up to our house, and they did a good job of lighting things up.

- At what range(s) do you want to zero the rifle + optic setup? What ammo will you use?
- What's the primary purpose of the rifle + optic combo? Range plinker, home defense/SHTF, hunting, etc. This might affect your choice of zeroing range.
- Does your brother intend to leave the red dot "on" all the time (a requirement for a home defense/SHTF rifle), or will it stay "off" until needed?
- How many knocks will that rifle + optic combo take during its "normal" use? Can the optics hold zero after going through something like getting bounced around in the trunk of your car or in the bed of a pickup truck? You might need several range trips to determine the optics' ability to hold zero after your "normal" use. I'm assuming you're not torture testing this setup.
- Does the optic exhibit any parallax (i.e. does the point of impact shift depending on where you place your eye relative to the optic)?

The Mk 23 is easily the most accurate handgun I own. I tried shooting at 25 yards w/ it today. Wide shot group, but all were on the paper of the target. Would have hit a silhouette target if one was up instead of a bullseye.

We have several of those Israeli bandages on hand. Haven't had to use any yet but they are part of our home and car first aid kits.
Heads up. At least on ours the instructions are written on the wrapper so be careful when opening it.
BTW, that tip in the video about a quick and easy way to apply more pressure was helpful.

Yes, I've been to the range. Punched holes in the paper until I was too tired to rack the slide. Put some holes right through the middle of the target, too.
I found out that indoors, a .45 makes a whole lot more BOOM than a 9 mm. I wasn't quite expecting that, but I think I'm getting the hang of this.

39 Anybody know anything about UTG red dot scopes? My brother has an AR he bought 11 years ago that has the red dot and magnifier. Its what the store sold him. I set them up today for him, since he hasn't done a damn thing with any of it since he bought it. They look pretty nice, solid quick release, glass is clear. I checked amazon and I was surprised the combo is around $200 or less. They almost looked too nice to be in that price range. I figured they would cost more.

The Long Range was recleared this summer, and then given a huge brush clearing this fall. Our Long Range Committee put in new range markers very 100 yards, replaced all target T stakes, measured every target by GPS, and put the info, maps, and sample ballistics out on a QR card.
Scoobs, the pink ram has been retired! Now we have two foxes, small and smaller. I have video proof that I smacked both of them, now at 1107 yards!

Chinese made but some of it seems pretty solid especially for the price. I have a UTG quadrail on my carbine and it's been fine but then it has zero moving or electrical parts. Not sure it's stuff I would trust for a true SHTF gun.

1911 disassembly video: This works for GI 1911s and commercial models that use the GI guide rod inside the slide. For 1911s w/ a full length guide rod (one that protrudes from the slide when the slide is in full recoil or locked to the read), you'll have to fight the tension of the recoil spring when you disassemble and reassemble the weapon. Because the position of your hand is awkward, it can be difficult to exert the needed pressure to hold the slide in place while you try to exactly line up the swinging link with the slide stop pin, especially when reassembling the pistol. I purchased a customized Colt Commander w/ a full length guide rod. I chose to replace it w/ the factory one because the improvement in accuracy wasn't worth the increased difficulty of putting the thing back together after cleaning.

First is the 1911 as I can't safely lower the hammer. The little LCP 380 is starting to be a problem with limp grip. I am about to re enter the wonderful world of J frame Smith and Wessons and really looking for a Colt Pocket Positive in 32 New Police. I've taken my Beretta Jetfire out of semi retirement as I can still cock the hammer with no trouble, and the tip up barrel aids in loading and unloading. Surprisingly, I can still cock and cycle a NAA mini revolver.

114 Yes, a J frame with even standard velocity defense loads can be a literal handful, but with wadcutter target loads they are very pleasant to shoot. Wadcutters will get the job done, as will the old cop go to, 158 gr round nose lead. That old load has mild recoil and the benefit of a long bullet that will upset in a wound channel.

AOP, a silencer is a silencer (legal terminology here) in the eyes of the BATFE no matter what it's mounted on. So yes, you'll still need to submit a Form 4 for a suppressor mounted on black powder firearm. Note that cleaning the inside of that suppressor after firing it with black powder will be a massive PITA, given that black powder residues can be seriously corrosive to the metal inside the suppressor.

I'm not worried about it. I was just surprised by it. I guess you could say I found out why I was given the advice to wear earplugs AND earmuffs. The range I'm at has people shooting shotguns and whatnot that you can feel even if they're several lanes over. Anyway, nobody's complained and I don't think they're likely to.

FYI, Walther has reintroduced the PP, PPK/S, and PPK in .32 ACP. Berretta plans to reintroduce the Cheetah in .32 ACP as well. The DMV MGC can attest that the PPK in .32 ACP has mild recoil and is easy to operate. If it floats your boat, the PPK/S also comes in a factory threaded barrel version. .32 ACP shot through a 9mm suppressor is a LOT of fun. The PPK/S's fixed barrel means you don't need a Neilson device/booster in order for the PPK/S to use a suppressor.

135 One of the really good and cheap hearing protection items are Mack's Wax Earplugs, available at Big box stores and drug stores. You get about three uses out of a pair, and they come six to a box for cheap. Wear them under even a set of cheapo muffs and you're good.

I just looked it up, it does have a BCM. The question is what exactly is it doing? Is it just to replace the traditional flasher, and is the the turn signal switch in the column still acting as the typical "gate" to disconnect brake power to the side thats selected as in the older cars?

Had to look this up. Yes, it can be done but DOES require an NFA tax stamp. The examples I saw were used on modern inline styles. Loading and cleaning the suppressor with BP or a substitute would be a real PITA.
Since I only shoot traditional style muzzleloaders, attaching a suppressor would be considered desecration. (Shivers with horror at the thought.)

Well, if I were to try it, and I have no plans to do it, I would thread the end of the barrel, and simply unscrew the suppressor for loading purposes, and screw it back on once the ball was rammed home.

Came home and put Hoppe's #9 on the rust spots on my daughter's revolver. Let it soak and bit and then wiped clean.
Rust disappeared and bluing appears to be intact - which I don't quite understand.
Her revolver was VERY dry on the exterior when we cleaned it. I think the rust was from the acid in her hand oils?

140 I'm trying to stay away from autoloaders, but the Beretta 30X has caught my eye, with the same manual of arms as my 950BS. I am a huge fan of 32s, even old 32 short top breaks (tinkered with hundreds before the hands went south). Right now, I still have a crusty Glock 17 first gen in the nightstand drawer and I also have an Iver Johnson Cadet 32 just in case, loaded with Fiocchi wadcutters (they're loaded a bit hot for Euro target autoloaders).

There are "silenced" airguns that don't have any federal regulations. I seem to recall some years ago seeing a thread somewhere where someone wrote to ATF asking about that and the answer was "ATF regulates firearms, not airguns." Which was actually a sort of non-answer since the question wasn't about the airguns. So they, that is ATF, chooses not to care about the airgun suppressors but left themselves an out if they ever decide to change their minds. Muzzleloaders are not firearms either so, in theory, ATF shouldn't care about a suppressed one. It's at this point that one of my early shooting/self-defense instructor's best pieces of advice comes into play: "DBTC. Don't Be the Test Case."

Years ago he bought 10 (!) crates of West German surplus, nicely contained in protective 200-round battle packs. 10K rounds.
Figure that ammo, stored in perfect conditions, oughta fetch some $.

They can never just leave well enough alone. I went through this a few weeks ago with a friend who was rewiring his hot rod and didn't have blinkers when the brake lights came on. I looked in the car and saw the wires coming from the column with only half of them connected to anything. I said to him, you do realize that brake power goes through the column first before going to the brake lights, right? It took a few hours for him to understand that the brake filament and blinker filament is the same filament on an 1157 bulb, and something has to disconnect power from the brake side of the blinker being used and its done by the blinker selector switch in the column acting as a gate. I looked at the wiring diagram for the car and told him what to connect. Glad he didn't have a BCM, he would still be at it. lol

- Pick suppressors that optimize sound suppression out of the platform you mate it to.
The first route will minimize the $$ you spend on suppressors, but you won't always get the best performance out of what you use them on. Also, suppressors designed for pistols won't work on rifles and vice versa. Because of the added weight and changes in the muzzle velocity of the bullets fired, adding a suppressor can change the point of impact for a previously zeroed weapon.
The second route means semi-permanently mating a suppressor to a specific platform. Some suppressors are designed to perform at their best with a specific firearm (EX: B&T's MP5 RBS suppressors are designed for the HK MP5 platform). Obviously, this is more expensive. But if you're looking to get the most sound suppression possible out of a specific platform that you can get, this is the way to go.

OK, so what makes the emergency (Israeli) bandage an emergency (Israeli) bandage is the little plastic bid near the gauze and the plastic bit at the end?
Because, except for the reversal bit*, that's how I've always applied bandages with that stretchy stuff. But with tape or those little metal toothed clip things at the end.
(* And the twists if you need extra pressure. That's a handy trick.)

Schnorfelpuppy probably ought to have mechanic put the BCM on a scan tool, and see if the BCM is returning any trouble codes. I drove a 2014 F150 around the block, and its turn signal switch has no "latch" in it. Moving the lever turns the flasher on, and I expect either a time delay, or a motion sensor on the steering column turns it off.

Quite possible. Did you check beneath the grips? I'm not sure where you live, or the storage conditions for that revolver. But moisture from the humidity can get beneath the grips and attack the frame from the inside.

I said to him, you do realize that brake power goes through the column first before going to the brake lights, right? It took a few hours for him to understand that the brake filament and blinker filament is the same filament on an 1157 bulb, and something has to disconnect power from the brake side of the blinker being used and its done by the blinker selector switch in the column acting as a gate. I looked at the wiring diagram for the car and told him what to connect. Glad he didn't have a BCM, he would still be at it. lol

The second route means semi-permanently mating a suppressor to a specific platform. Some suppressors are designed to perform at their best with a specific firearm (EX: B&T's MP5 RBS suppressors are designed for the HK MP5 platform). Obviously, this is more expensive. But if you're looking to get the most sound suppression possible out of a specific platform that you can get, this is the way to go.

Took a CPR/AED/Stop Bleed class two weeks ago. Excellent. Would actually like to do more stop-bleed training, will be asking the instructor what the options are.
Also hoping to convince my club to fund/partially fund such training for one RSO on each team, if possible, maybe get a bulk-discount rate.

Do not scrimp on the AED. The ones we have at work are truly user stupid. You can be functionally illiterate and use it. It shows you pictures of where to place the "patches".
And it tells you if it needs to shock the patient.

As for mags, 3 factory 5-rounders, 7 factory steel 20-rounders, 7 alloy 20-rounders. 22 conversion kit, pristine, in a cool wooden carrying case. Bunch of spare parts, bipod.

Older design cans will significantly increase the volume and velocity of the gas coming back into the chamber and upper receiver, increasing the force your bolt carrier hits your buffer weight. If you pick a high back pressure can, make sure you look at adding a heavier buffer, a heavier buffer spring, and a gas tight charging handle. You don't want to inhale the fumes coming into the upper receiver from your high back pressure suppressor. They WILL make you sick and do bad things to your lungs.

Some time ago I took a 3-day Wilderness First Aid course which was really good. The focus is on what to do when the victim is more than 48 hours from definitive medical care. If you spend a lot of time in the outdoors it's highly recommended.

AEDs are great that way, rickb. Still, I'd like crew to watch videos, so that the process is second nature. One thing I will need to do is organize my crew so that (for now, and of course if I'm present) I do the CPR while someone gets the AED, another calls 911 (with a careful message - sheriffs need to know it's a non-shooting medical situation, no "active shooter"), and someone else *makes sure NOBODY ELSE calls it in on their own*.
The latter happened at a serious gun blow-up incident in the spring, sheriffs rolled heavy, very unnecessary tension and risk.

I think any of the high-end scan tools that a professional shop would use ought to be able to communicate with the BCM.
You might ask at an O'Reilly's shop.

Years back (when I was in DC) I signed up for a wilderness first aid class but couldn't make it. Gonna look into that too.
And going to nag club management about supporting a goal of at least one trained member per crew.
When I started this RSO thing my buddy who did it with me was a Navy SEAL among whose specialties was combat first aid (he spent weeks at Bethesda Naval doing training each year). That was extraordinarily good, can't replicate that, but we can do out utmost.

He's H&K's point man for the US and does offer a consignment service. Since he has ties to the H&K mothership, he should be able to give you a very definitive assessment on the condition of not just the rifle, but all of the other accessories you have.

For the AR-10 and AR-15, please make sure you select a low pressure, flow through design can (EX: Huxworks, B&T). Older design cans will significantly increase the volume and velocity of the gas coming back into the chamber and upper receiver, increasing the force your bolt carrier hits your buffer weight. If you pick a high back pressure can, make sure you look at adding a heavier buffer, a heavier buffer spring, and a gas tight charging handle. You don't want to inhale the fumes coming into the upper receiver from your high back pressure suppressor. They WILL make you sick and do bad things to your lungs.

One more thing. Don't hesitate to replace all the bulbs in the left rear lamp housing, and the left front, too, if the front lamp housing acts as both park and turn lamps. Reason being, a dual-filament bulb can burn out at the end of one filament, and the broken filament can droop down and weld itself to the intact filament for the other function. Weirdness will result.
Also check for bad grounds in the affected lamp holder.

Quite possible. Did you check beneath the grips? I'm not sure where you live, or the storage conditions for that revolver. But moisture from the humidity can get beneath the grips and attack the frame from the inside.

I also cut her a strip of very bright white poster board. We laid it across the firing pin area after the cylinder was removed, then put her cell phone light next to the barrel to shine down at the firing pin and reflect up the barrel. She could then easily look down the barrel to check its cleanliness. (It was surprisingly clean for all of the .22 ammo she has run through the barrel.)
I think with maybe one more "team" cleaning, she will be able to perform care and maintenance on her gun by herself in the future.

For example, Colt had to remove some desirable features from its AR-15s during the ban (EX: bayonet lugs, collapsing stocks). Thus, the pre-ban Colt AR-15s are still worth more $$ today compared to those made during the ban years (1994-2005). Because the ban specifically targeted a lot of H&K products, H&K firearms were, for all practical purposes, effectively extinct from the US market for their most desirable firearms (G3, MP5, etc.) Many of the remainder were sacrificed to become platforms for NFA Class 3 firearms (HK 94 --> MP5), so relatively few survived intact. Hence the rise of the clone market in the US for H&K firearms.

Interestingly, I saw a "G3" manual among the items - but there was an enormous amount to do and I couldn't focus on assessing condition, accessory status, etc for the firearms. Definitely not a G3 in the mix.

yeah that shit I knew, like colt changing the diameter of the pins on the trigger group on the AR, and all the silly cosmetic shit. But I see stuff made now and I still see CAR-15 stocks, and the aftermarket receivers still using the .154 pins, etc. I guess the better question was it is a collector thing. Basically worth more because it was made before the great fuckening, yet grandfathered.
