  • The Playdate is a great indie puzzle machine: Games like Lexgrid, Togglebot, and What Time Is It? are perfect daily distractions. (The Verge) (archive site)

    The what?

Huh. This is apparently a thing that exists. It's a tiny handheld gaming device, the size and colour of a Post-It note, with specs to match the original Nintendo Game Boy from 1989.

Which is... Fine. It costs $229 and has not exactly set the world on fire, but keep trucking along, dudes.

  • Bluesky has reached 40 million users and unveiled a "dislike button". (Tech Crunch)

Nobody posts on Bluesky but that's a separate problem.
The company explained the changes are designed to make Bluesky a place for more "fun, genuine, and respectful exchanges" - an edict that follows a month of unrest on the platform as some users again criticized the platform over its moderation decisions.
Edict? Do you know what that word means?

Anyway, the only people more delusional than the Tech Crunch reporter here trying to fluff month-dead roadkill and the Bluesky executives pretending their company isn't month-dead roadkill are Bluesky's dozen or so actual users who insist that the company should ban people who don't break the rules, to save them the trouble of constructing their own echo chambers:
Bluesky, however, wants to focus more on the tools it provides users to control their own experience.Today, this includes things like moderation lists that let users quickly block a group of people they don't want to interact with, content filter controls, muted words, and the ability to subscribe to other moderation service providers.
The problem is that all this engineering effort is going to make sure that none of their users ever have to see outside their bubbles.

  • Support for MySQL 8.0 ends in six months. (The Register)

    Bleh.

  • A faint glow in the Milky Way could be dark matter. (Space)

If it's so dark, why does it glow?

7 Just harvested olives with Mrs. BD in our north Israel garden.

Hot days recently, instead of the usual windy and rainy days by the start of Nov. Not good. Not enough rain last year, too.

More olive picking later this afternoon before sunset, when it's cooler and shadier.

45 Evening and morning to all as we welcome our new Clock Overlords! C'mon, admit it, we are generally slaves to the clock and watch and the time readout on our phones/cars/computers, right?

Anyway, as our former "president" used to say! I'm up, awake-ish, sipping my coffee. The furry thugs think they are being starved -- it's past their breakfast time according to their appetite alarms. I'll feed them shortly, about fifteen minutes early this evening, and then have them back on schedule tomorrow.

46 Leave those clocks alone.

Posted by: Boss Moss at November 02, 2025 06:30 AM (5dJvI)

47 Lily, our 19-pound corgi, she'll be 7 in December, she jumps on my chest with all four each morning, at about five (she did not turn back her clock), to say, hey, HEY, FEED ME.

I do, she's afraid of the dark, so won't go out until dawn, which ain't here yet, so, fed, she's calmed down.

I take the sourdough-rye loaf, slice off a piece, cut that in half, put it in the toaster, set to a short heat. One egg, broken into a flat bottom small bowl, fork-pierce the yolk, into the 1100W microwave for 30 seconds, then a slice of firm white cheddar goes on, 15 seconds more. Make up the sandwich, and be sure to drizzle some tabasco on the egg. Hot black French roast coffee accompanies this small wonder.

49 Cool, 61 F. here, humidity up but not much wind.

Paul McCartney was in town for a concert on Wed. night 10/29, and he paid a visit to the famous Skeleton House on St. Charles Ave. This is a private home which every year on 10/1 unveils an entire yard full of skeletons dressed in costumes and with funny/satirical labels on them, like "James Car-ILL" and "SCARY Matalin," "Trom-BONE Shorty," "TERROR Swift," "Morris BAT" (after a local ambulance-chaser), and (mounted on the roof) a skeleton proclaiming, "I've Got Shingles!"

Next year, I predict, there will be one labeled "Paul Mc-CASKET-y."

50 My wall clock, which is supposed to adjust its time according to the WWVB signal from Colorado, did not do that. I'm curious as to whether it's the location. To test, I've put the clock in the window, which faces approximately west toward the station. If it hasn't updated by the time I finish working out, oh, well, I'll set it manually.

The humor is its real attraction. Others on the avenue do wide swaths of spider webs with giant colorful spiders within them; one place had a giant inflatable pumpkin; one had a life-size figure of the stereotypical witch on the porch. Only the Skeleton House goes with satire.

In a local TV interview, the lady says she comes up with most of the comic labels/puns herself -- though some have come via the suggestion box she has on the fence outside the gate.

67 America will have its 250th birthday next year, and that duration pretty much matches the length of the glorious Inca civilization, the largest in the Americas, larger in area when the Spaniards encountered them, than any other in the world.

The Spanish were from another continent, way across the waters, and their number was a tiny fraction of the Inca. Nonetheless, the Inca were conquered, and their civilization dissolved.

Will our civilizaton survive the invasion that is happening right now?

Police confirm they used, then rescinded, code word for terror attack
published at 03:47

British Transport Police have confirmed to the BBC that those responding to a mass stabbing on a train near Huntingdon at one point declared "Plato", which is the national code word used by police and emergency services when responding to a "marauding terror attack".

This declaration was later rescinded, police said.

We reported earlier that police have now declared a "major incident", and the investigation is being supported by counter-terrorism officers.

Thirteen States contain more than one time-zone.

I propose we go to UTC and end all of this foolishness w/r/t what time is the sun at its zenith. We have already conceded that when we introduced Daylight Saving Time.

The clock will show the exact same time no matter where in the US you are. From Maine to Hawaii, same clock time. You go work out on your own what time the clock reads when you wake, eat, sleep or shop. Your community will organically derive a UTC time for common events like church, school and sports.

Baseball has this this over football and basketball: objective rules. They're now testing lasers for ball and strike calls, and there's already replay for safe/out calls. Umps won't go away, because their initial call still can't be overruled unless the video gives clear proof.

Football and basketball are, and always will be, inherently subjective on ref calls as long as pass interference, holding and fouls are a thing. And they have to be a thing because it wouldn't be the same game without them.

The beauty is on websites that offer their hours of operation for their various functions. Even the timestamp on posts here in AoSHQ will be correct no matter where you are in the US.

Other than the fact this makes too much sense, it will never get traction. For most people they are used to tradition, no matter if the tradition causes physiological and mental stress two times a year.

191 Doing away with DST would cause (minor) issues.

I have a thermostat that's not connected to anything other than the HVAC. It automatically adjusts for DST. There's a digital clock that does this too. No way to reprogram them not to.

There's probably a whole host of not-so-smart appliances that do this as well. Microwaves, ovens, etc.

As well as trillions of lines of code that would have to be changed. Bet something significant would be screwed up because of all that. Yet... I'd prefer to stay on one time format all year.

192 Football and basketball are, and always will be, inherently subjective on ref calls as long as pass interference, holding and fouls are a thing. And they have to be a thing because it wouldn't be the same game without them.

The subjectively largely comes from the ref not seeing something.

Computer Vision and AI solves all of that. All players can be watched at the same time and violations could be programmed to be either strict or loose with both teams agreeing before the game begins on what style of ref'ing they want.

it would be a far better game, and disrupt the Hell out of sports gambling because the strict v loose ref'ing agreement wouldn't be revealed until all betting for the game has ended.

Bring a whole new dimension to the game.

Furthermore, pre 1966 there was no standardization. Until 2007 DST began on the last Sunday in April and ended on the Sunday in October.

I have AI cameras all over the property. dittos with AI sound detection. All of the relevant parameters can be adjusted to allow for sensitivity. I have another proprietary AI fusion engine that permits dialing in the orchestration of events prior to issuing out a stratified alert. That is, if X happen within a certain threshold and Y happens within its own threshold then if Z occurs at all, then do something.

The NFL has the money to do this and make the game better - unless hating the refs for not going your way is considered a critical part of the game.

AKA: Embedded systems. It was a significant headache in 2006 when Congress had decided to alter the start/stop dates for DST and all those embedded systems out there had the previous rule set (some of which still do) and those can't be altered easily.

There were/are various solutions, like running all the systems on UTC (GMT), which honestly seems the most sensible to me.

When Congress commissioned those studies about how much energy would be saved by using DST, the amount was minimal, something like 0.03%. The amount of inconvenience caused by having to try to adjust all those devices was never measured, but I know the local reaction at the company I was at was something akin to "May all those bastards burn in the fires of a thousand suns for messing this up."

At the end of the game the cameras always follow the two head coaches coming together to greet each other at midfield with the obligatory law enforcement officer wearing a Smokey Bear hat.
Here's what I like to see. As the final seconds tick off the clock I want a camera to be focused on each of the zebra shirts. I'm curious to see just how fast they get themselves off the field of play. What route do they take? Are they escorted by a security team? When and where do they change the shirt and hat? You know that in at least half the games they officiate they are the target of some drunken fan's ire. It's probably the scariest minute and a half of their week. Might make for some compelling television viewing.

Published papers are now just love notes from one academic to another. None of them mean anything anymore, the entire system is corrupted beyond saving. It’s already been revealed that there is a consortium generating papers using AI and selling them to academics who get promotions for “published papers” - maybe 3,000 such papers going out a year, maybe 10 times that, nobody knows.

Best exit I’ve ever seen was at a big Mexican soccer game in Guadalajara I was lucky enough to go to once - very enlightening! At the end of the game, the entire officiating team goes and stands at the center of the field; then 4 soldados come out with helmets, body armor, and M-16’s and take up positions around them before they exit the field.
Anyone who wants to cause trouble will be lucky if all they get is a rifle butt to the mouth.

I have a Casio ABC watch that I had prior to the Garmin Fenix line of smart watches that at the watch's midnight would for a 20 minute span of time, listen for the NIST signal out of Colorado.

The Japanese apparently didn't understand at that time that the time changes happened at 2AM local. It would eventually catch up at the next midnight.

He's turned the findings of his committee over to the DOJ claiming that not a single person in the Biden administration testified they ever heard Biden give anyone authorization to use the autopen. He is asking the DOJ to nullify every pardon signed by the autopen.

I don't know if the DOJ even has that power, seems like a court would have to decide that, but it has already moved beyond his committee.
