Shift lead comes over and he moves the mouse around to confirm the cursor tracks like it's supposed to. Then he turns it over (this is where you recall that this is an optical mouse).

"What about this?"

I inspect the bottom of the mouse, "uhhmm?"

He points to the LED...the red LED, "It's still in alarm"

Please understand that I was sleep-deprived, and a bit loopy from the two-hour drive to get there. For a nanosecond, I thought that I was in the presence of an unsung comic genius. I was about to explode in gales of laughter, punch him in the shoulder, and surrender any claims of having any wit while in the presence of this...this...true god of comedy.

In the next instant, I realized he was serious...and the rest of the shift nodding their agreement...

One day, I'm helping out the Accounting VP with an issue. Pretty simple fix and done in less than five minutes. Once finished, he looked at me and said "You ever get a call that makes you think 'What kind of an idiot is this?' "

I stopped my initial response because I really did like the job. My reply was "This is what I do so a lot of stuff becomes mundane to me. If you were to put me in your section and ask for a quarterly earnings report from last year, you'd think of me as stupid."

Their CEO Kirtley also shared that their direct energy recovery of inputs is a whopping 96%. That means to get net electric power from a pulse (i.e. generate electricity) they only need to raise the average energy of the plasma (using fusion) by 5%. Since their reactor is basically a sub-ms pulsed RLC circuit they avoid nearly all the plasma stability questions by just not waiting long enough for any of that stuff to happen.

but they are not sharing a lot of other results from Polaris

Helion is in an odd position wrt results because useless government tokamak boondoggles immediately report all their commercially useless data, but Helion is a real company that could be sitting on a moderately profitable (the new electric generation market is just not all that large) idea and China is already trying to steal their tech

so we may only hear "Polaris has met its goals" and that only because funding was contingent on it

all that notwithstanding I asked them to share an emoji when Polaris achieves a net power pulse (hopefully this year)
