  • Microsoft went down. (The Verge)

The outage took out Azure, Microsoft 365, Xbox services, and most importantly, Minecraft, as well as a whole string of Azure customers like Starbucks, Costco, and Zoom. It even affected some services on AWS and Google Cloud.

    It was DNS.

    It is always DNS.

15 Microsoft keeps disabling workarounds for Windows 11's demand for an online account during setup.

One of the big reasons I'm switching to Linux. Even the people who manage to use one of the workarounds will wake up one day and find that the most recent Windows update will require them to have an online presence.

Fuck them.

27 AOL handles a fuckton of email.

For instance, my email was handled through verizon for a while who then pawned it off to AOL while maintaining the verizon.net bit of the email address unchanged.

I could be wrong but I think that AOL mutated itself into the generic email handler for those who don't use gmail.

This guest is being dropped off and will either stay until Saturday or for the whole weekend since the owners have World Series tickets.

Fen, I was pondering things about your son and his poor luck in finding a girlfriend. From what I am seeing out there, most ladies his age are looking for the established rich man with the "Three Sixes" (6 feet tall, 6 pack abs, 6 figure income) and they expect it to be handed to them because they deserve it.

I hope he has success in finding someone.

69 @58/Tuna: It's best to start with the assumption, "This is always a scam."

I'm now at the point of walking replacement bank cards + letter with them into my bank and asking, "Was this really from you?"

Same with first time communications allegedly from my doctor's office that came through an online system I'd never heard of. First, it was a link in an email, which I copied and took a good hard look at, then pasted into a sheep-dip virtualbox with a browser, the lot of which I could (and would) revert immediately thereafter.

The site that sent me to asked for my birth date. My reaction? "Nope. Asking for personally identifying information and I have no idea who or what this really is." Then I printed the URL, the email, and the website asking for my birthdate to PDF files, put those on my tablet, and walked that into my doctor's office and asked, "Did you send me a communication, and are these from you?"

Then we discussed red flags like "Link in an email" (which you should never normally click) and "Asking for personally identifying information". The secretary agreed with me, and said I'm one of the very few who actually bother to walk in and verify like I did.

94 Another funny story about dating and its perils. A guy was 30 and going to college on the GI Bill. The professor assigned the ladies to write out a job description for an ideal husband. After telling them to STFU about the three sixes and take it seriously, a list of requirements was created.

Then the men did the same thing with an ideal wife. The normal things you would expect were listed. There was screaming, crying and actual mental breakdowns from the girls leading him to conclude "Women don't want to be wives. They want to be pets. Taken care of and no responsibility on them in return."

Young people...

- don't know what they want

Unfortunately, as many people have pointed out, the last 50 years or so society has spent considerable effort in telling men what they owe women but not the other way around. Arranged marriage won't fix that.

132 Microsoft keeps disabling workarounds for Windows 11's demand for an online account during setup.

This is one reason I think software should be treated as a patent, not copyright. Once they say they're not supporting a version of Windows anymore, I should be able to deconstruct it, reprogram it, and then sell it all my own.

Of course, it would just be nice to actually own the software once you buy it. Any other arrangement isn't "protecting IP" it's a license to extortion.

Earlier this year I bought a clock which is supposed to update itself via WWV in Fort Collins, CO. I'm not sure that it can pick up the signal where I have it mounted. There are lots of choices. Briar pipes can range in price, new, from $80 (and still be good smokers) to hundreds (Dunhill brand et al). Estates, used pipes, cleaned up, are available from plenty of vendors on the 'Net. Meerschaum pipes, the ones with the white mineral bowls, are more expensive, but they are supposed to be great smokers.

As for leaf, Prince Albert is still in production, as is Half and Half and the Captain Black line. You probably remember seeing those pouches at the drugstore. There are various kinds like burley, Virginia, and English blends with the smoky leaf called Latakia. Have a look at Smokingpipes dot com and Pipesandcigars dot com. It's a hobby both wide and deep. But it should be something to be enjoyed.
