The Alleged Friends of Union Voters Say "F*** You"
The nation's largest union of federal workers is calling on Congress to pass a short-term funding bill and immediately end the government shutdown as it heads into a fifth workweek. In a strong condemnation of both parties on Monday, the American Federation of Government Employees argued the shutdown is an "avoidable crisis" harming American families and workers across the nation. "Both political parties have made their point, and still there is no clear end in sight," Everett Kelley, president of the AFGE, wrote. "It's time to pass a clean continuing resolution and end this shutdown today. No half measures, and no gamesmanship." The AFGE represents more than 800,000 federal and Washington government workers and has filed several lawsuits against the Trump administration, including over mass layoffs. Kelley on Monday emphasized that federal workers will be unpaid and face layoffs. "When the folks who serve this country are standing in line for food banks after missing a second paycheck because of this shutdown, they aren't looking for partisan spin," he said. "They're looking for the wages they earned. The fact that they're being cheated out of it is a national disgrace." ... The Senate last week rejected a Republican-led effort to pay active-duty members of the military and essential federal workers who have remained on the job during the shutdown. Democrats have backed a proposal that would pay all federal workers and bar the Trump administration from further firings workers during the shutdown.

If you go to Portland and some Salem stores on certain days like when EBT cards (Called the Oregon Trail* card here) you can see stumblers and related going in and coming out with loaded grocery baskets, which they line up to the curb where a number of SUVs are parked, and some sort of transaction occurs, and the purchase walks away with something, and the groceries are stowed in the back of the SUV.
No idea if it is traded for drugs or money, and no idea if this is a novel way to stock a smaller store, or feed Antifa troops, but there you are.
This business model may go away for a bit.

And, honestly, it isn't unusual in my AO to see someone try one EBT card, find out, unexpectectly, it is empty and then pull out another one.

IIRC at 30 days +1 those employees furloughed, not RIF'd (temporarily out of work) join the ranks of the RIF'd. So there will be a lot of Feds without paychecks at that point.
But, yea, they can be rehired if the shutdown is resolved before it reaches 60 days +1. After that, the shit gets real.

How on earth do they get 4000 bucks a month for food? The USDA Food Budget says a family of 4 on a "liberal" or high cost food budget would be around 1650 per month. I cannot imagine eating 1000 dollar worth of food per week!

Not too sure about the disability thing and SNAP. My cousin, on dialysis and getting section 8 housing, got $18 a month in food stamps. He did get free prepared meals delivered. The last time I knew anyone on SNAP it was $200 a month for a single person. That was before Biden got in.

Commodities had canned beef and pork, butter and cheese, flour and powdered milk. Don't remember if they got shortening or lard. One of the issues with food banks is that you don't get the items you needfor the things you do get. Macaroni and cheese mix is common, but you need milk and butter (or margarine) to make it. It's not an issue if you can buy what you need, but if you are broke, it's hard.

When I got blindsided by a divorce, I did everything I could to pay my bills and keep the lights on. I worked two jobs. I didn't qualify for shit. But I kept the lights on, the bills paid, the dogs fed and I ate one can of pinto beans a day. For over nine months until I could get my head above water.
Towards the end when my wife could no longer work and was home bound and on hospice, again, my cracker ass didn't qualify for shit.

We're getting what we pay for in congress. After about a dozen decades of trying the current system, how about trying a change?
Let's get higher caliber people in congress and give them an incentive to do what is right. Pay $500,000 per year for a congressman and give them a $500,000 bonus if they complete their 13 appropriations bills on time and in budget. Pay senators $750,000 a year along with a $750,000 bonus for the same thing. Pay the VP $2 million and the president $4 million. Give each member between 20 and 100 hours per year of NetJets time. Add in a $5,000 per month housing subsidy for congress and $10,000 for the senate. Make it appealing and financially viable to become an elected official. Maybe, just maybe, you'll see a change.

My bf/now husband worked something out and I paid it back.
I tried to find you yesterday on this maze to tell you that I misread your comment about nurse. I read it as "who started welfare" vs who raised two boys without a father. I apologized with an extra helping of apparent dyslexia.
One of our sons does not know how to budget and frustrates his father (and me). He is constantly in debt and living above his means.

Yeah well, the local food banks once gave me dry noodles and a few cans of tuna. I was happy to get it, but it is tough to work with. My husband and I started giving food or money to that food bank for Thanksgiving. There are a lot of things you can do to get by, but it is nice to have something resembling a real meal. Powdered milk should be a commodity given, since we've had overproduction of milk in this country.

Saw a lot of "heavy lifting" when I worked in a store. The most popular time for a grab and run were 7-9 am and 4-7 pm weekdays. For the weekends, just before and just after the big game(s). Long lines of law-abiding folks made it easy. All you could do was to write a quick note for the time-date and a brief description for the manager's video check.

These girls had greasy paper bags with mayo sandwiches on white bread. They were almost drooling at my lunch and I'd give them a half sandwich and apple (I never remember sharing my soup or cookie). I felt really bad for them as much as a 9yr old girl can. Later, in looking at the yearbook, you saw one of their siblings in each class through 12th grade.
I am sure my seamstress grandmother saved my parents some $ as she sewed me seasonal wardrobes. I'd help her pick out the fabric and to this day remember how to judge if fabric is good or not. My cousins got my hand-me-downs. She learned to sew and cook at a French convent on the MS/LA border. Wonderful woman and grandmother. As she lay dying I told her though tears that I hoped I'd be just as good.
