Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Wednesday Overnight Open Thread - October 29, 2025 [Spooky Rex]![]() Good evening Horde. The time has come for mid-week shenanigans of the overnight variety. Welcome to the Wednesday night ONT which means another random assortment of interweb tricks and treats (some of the mystery variety). Pull up a chair and sit a spell. Be nice to your fellow commenters and AoS contributors. [Top photo: Does a giant inflatable peg-leg pirate TRex dressed up for Halloween really need a caption?]![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() At $50,080, that's the highest industry average ever, reflecting the price hikes faced by new car buyers in recent years amid pandemic supply shortages, tariff-induced increases, and the high cost of EV production. The figure marks a 3.6% jump from the same month last year. "Tariffs have introduced new cost pressure to the business, but the pricing story in September was mostly driven by the healthy mix of EVs and higher-end vehicles pushing the new-vehicle ATP into uncharted territory," Cox executive analyst Erin Keating said. Passing the $50,000 mark was inevitable, Keating said, especially considering that the country's bestseller is a Ford truck that "routinely costs north of $65,000." ![]() ![]() ![]()

The picture from TPIR is a funny phenomenon that goes back to the very beginning of the show. Cameramen loved to do closeups on attractive lady contestants, but like nearly half had the impulse the lady in the pic did. When Johnny said "a new car" a lot of women cover their face like that. Same when they won a prize. It's a shame, maybe the only time their pretty face would be on TV.

Evening, folk. Time for me to check the ONT before I head off to bed to rest my sore back.
Halloween parties . . .? I remember one my best friend gave at his house in 1966. I dressed as the cat burglar lead character from the then-new TV series T.H.E. Cat: black turtleneck, slacks, gloves, and a rope coiled over one shoulder. Everybody knew who I was at least. The other Halloweens that stick in my memory were from the '80s, when Bennigans and other restaurants would have a costume night the Saturday before H'ween itself. You could come and eat in costume, presuming, I guess, that the costume didn't prevent it (e.g., a T-Rex outfit). Mrs. Wolfus No. 2 wore her doeskin-looking "barbarianette" outfit a la Raquel Welch's in One Million B.C. And believe me, she wore the hell out of it. Somehow every male server in the place made it a point to stop by our table to see if we needed anything. . . . Oh, and -- in the dear dead days when kids could trick-or-treat after dark in their neighborhoods without a SWAT team riding herd on them -- my brother and I went out in the French Quarter on H'ween when I was ten and again at age eleven. He was four years younger. I dressed as Larry Talbot the Wolf Man: jeans, a flannel shirt, a rope belt, and a Wolf Man face mask, you know, the molded, thin plastic kind with an elastic strip to hold it on. The area wasn't the tourist magnet it's become, and certainly not today's out-and-in-your-face gay neighborhood, either.

When the grandkids were little they thought the climbing jasmine bush next to the gazebo was the beanstalk from Jack and the beanstalk and I had cut down the beanstalk and buried the giant. So I wanted to find one of the giant skeletons and bury it because as the kids got a little older they weren't so sure there was a buried giant in the backyard. After discovering the skeletons cost $1,200 or more I dropped the scheme. Fortunately, the kids have forgotten about it. Now, when I replace the deck, I am going bury a skeleton and put a wooden stake through its heart. Posted by: Beartooth at October 29, 2025 11:08 PM (kanec) 197

Posted by: JQ at October 29, 2025 11:07 PM (rdVOm) ------------ I think this really happened (would be fun to find out if video exists on the webz). One of my high school buddies, an hilarious class clown, couldn't wait to tell me this one day in high school: He was watching Family Feud and the category was "Famous Rudolphs." So the controlling family guesses the obvious ones ("The Red-Nosed Reindeer," "Valentino," and "Nureyev." There was a fourth answer, but they didn't guess it. So, Richard Dawson goes to the other family for their chance to name the 4th famous Rudolph -- and after huddling together -- they proudly proclaim "Rudolph Hitler!" Richard Dawson gets that astonished look on his face ... and without missing a beat yells while gesturing to the board: "SHOW ME THE INFAMOUS RUDOLPH HITLER!" I have to question the methodology of the "average" new car cost. Beware, for I will do math.
Lets say the Macho Grande Car Company has four models. They cost, respectively, $28K, $30K, $32K, and $150K. The last, the Puta Grande, is their flagship V-12 muscle car, which has very few sales. ($28K + $30K + $32K + $150K) / 4 = $60K OMG! The average price of a new MGCC model is $60,000! Posted by: Idaho Spudboy at October 29, 2025 11:33 PM (mP847) 273

There is no way I will pay interest on something actively losing value, like a car. I will probably never own a brand new car when I can always pay in full for one that isn't very old and has already lost that first huge drop of value when it rolls off the lot for the first time. I have taught multiple Dave Ramsey FPU classes, so there's lot of great stuff I can parrot from that education. 🙂

Posted by: Berserker-Dragonheads Division at October 30, 2025 12:29 AM (snZF9) Many car models have gone to electric power assisted steering now. Mediated by the ECM, of course. No belts, no fluid, no leaks. And better road feel. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at October 30, 2025 12:35 AM (npFr7) 341

Pick up a OBDII scan tool-- can go cheap at chynah freight for ~$30 and these newer cars will basically *tell you* what's wrong with them, as far as engine/ECM related stuff...
Frigging sensors are $$$, but sometimes can be cleaned. Can usually test them somehow, too, if there's a question of whether it's "this sensor or something else" situation. Could y'all do me a favor and pray for my 9wk old granddaughter who is in the ED with vomiting? She can't keep fluids down and I would appreciate prayers for her. Thanks.
Sorry to interrupt this odd non-grey box ONT. As a former RN any trip to the ED makes me think too hard, and she's very little but very healthy normally. She started daycare half days this week and I, of course, blame this (not her siblings who are currently not vomiting). Thanks. Thank you, JQ. She's a little doll and I hate this for her and her parents. She was an unexpected surprise for 2025, and we found out just after Christmas. Her name is Juliana.
I keep thinking, it's just a virus, etc. But she's so young it breaks my heart. They are starting an IV and doing bloodwork now, as she can't keep fluids down. Her siblings are healthy and she did not get whatever this is from them, which would be normal. I blame the daycare but have no proof...that someone did not wash their hands. Put a sturdy stepladder up on the other side of the Suburban. I could scurry up the ladder, put a knee on the plywood, crawl across the top of the suburban, and make a short hop up to the roof. There is about 3 sheets' worth of rotten plywood decking that will have to be changed. Maybe from the gable end in about 4 to 6 feet, and 6 to 8 feet down from the ridge. Plan is to rip up all the shingles from the affected area, until I reach sound decking. Cut rotten decking out with portable saw, flush with rafter. Sister that rafter with 2X4, cut and screw down new deck plywood, new tar paper, which I have a roll of, and new or salvage shingles, which I have a bunch of. Then coat entire roof with that white polymer sealant, which is popular down there. Should last as long as I do. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at October 30, 2025 02:29 AM (npFr7) 435

Dishwasher drains should have a loop in it, they have to come out of the tailpiece and then get pulled high, like along the under side of the counter, and then drop down to the dishwasher. Its to keep water from the drain from running into the dishwasher. If you're lucky there is enough slack on the loop to make your connection and still have the loop. Posted by: JQ at October 30, 2025 03:20 AM (rdVOm) I am sorry. The father of this baby girl got covid from Canada (business trip). Had a bad cold and fever a month ago. His wife barely had a stuffy nose, so I hope all miss your husband. We were exposed in a car with him for an hour but did not get it. I think that, by now, everyone on the freaking planet has been exposed to The Coof. Which means... some level of natural immunity exists *in general*
What will be, will be. It's out of my hands. I will not place blame on anyone (except those involved with the Wuhan Lab!) if hubby succumbs to Coof. Posted by: JQ at October 30, 2025 03:28 AM (rdVOm) 469

Posted by: JQ at October 30, 2025 03:28 AM (rdVOm) Agree. I've had it 2 or 3 times. The one I never tested positive for was the worst and longest in 2023. Now it's mostly a cold. I think it is here to stay and at least no one tells us anymore to get the vax, so that's good. I think my son is fixin' to raise some caine at the ED for a decision soon. It is a satellite children's hospital and one of her labs is not in yet. Which is bs, as I worked for seven years in an ED. We are all getting testy, ha! But she's apparently doing ok and is her feisty little self. She's lovely. Nana wants her and those daycare people need to learn to wash their damn hands. I haven't felt bad enough to even get tested for Coof. Haven't even had a cold for.. jeez, don't know how long, but been years.
Allergies? Oh, yeah. But once the pollen subsides, no more trouble. :shrugs: Posted by: JQ at October 30, 2025 03:43 AM (rdVOm) 473
JQ, thanks for your prayers, and those of others.
She's being discharged, all 10lbs of her.No doubt wanting her bottle but only getting Pedialyte probably. All will be well is my prayer and she must be doing ok. I hope her parents will think about the cause, but I can't force them to change. They know I am here. I'm just along for the ride, and having grandkids has been a joy. They share part of my heart. We are never up this late out of choice! Her grandfather will return here soon. Re: the Bocker ad. They didn't put it in French because it would have started WW3.
