First-World Problems...

CrapBolt2025.jpg

It amazes me that makers of otherwise good quality stuff will cheap out on bolts. And then they provide an even crappier hex wrench to turn that soft metal bolt or screw so that it is almost guaranteed to strip.

Spend the extra seven cents! I promise...it will be worth it.

20 My wife was making butternut squash soup, and put the hot chunks of squash into our Oster blender to be pureed. When she finished, she picked the jar up, and the bottom collar and blades fell off, covering the counter in boiling hot squash puree.

The culprit? The collar piece that holds the jar and base together, made of plastic naturally, so that every time it was tightened, it came closer to a fracture, which is what eventually happened.

Make the f***ing thing out of metal, you cheap bastards!

35 My FWP:

I just returned from a trip in the Ozarks. Went up just prior to the cold front, started the vehicle to leave and the sensor network in the computer on wheels is sounding the Klaxon, firing off flares and going into limp mode because the rear tires had 29psi.

The tires have the green Nitrogen Inside valve stem covers. Clearly the dealership didn't put Nitrogen in the tires but regular air. Which is worse than putting on plain caps because it leaves the driver assuming that the tire pressure won't fluctuate that much for 265/40R22 tires. Low pressure = damaged rims and lowered fuel economy.

Assholes.

There is no shame in copying a design that worked. Iterate if there are things you want to improve. Swap out new, better materials where applicable. Or at least consider going back to the proven design philosophy after the first couple failures.

Nitrogen will contract when cooled also. The air we breathe is 78% nitrogen. Oxygen is 21%. The nitrogen charged tires will lose their pressure very similarly to air.

55 Good mechanical design has lots of mundane facets like thermal growth and galvanic corrosion that youngsters do not understand nor care.

One of my early machine design was a machine that had temperatures of 450-500F, sulfuric acid, and ferric chloride chemicals in the process. Corrosion was unavoidable and only could be delayed. Life of those machines was 24-30 months typically and required lots of maintenance that was always deferred.

88 49 6 Many manufacturers will use ferrous metals (steel) bolts that go into aluminum pieces. If you don't use anti-seize you'll never be able to get the bolt out ever again. Especially in a marine environment. Idiots.

The other problem is the aluminum threads may gall and you'll never get the bolt out. Or never get a threaded aluminum piece out of a steel internal thread. Use anti-seize to be super-safe when using steel-aluminum thread connections. Rare, except for AR-15 steel barrel retainer nuts threading onto the aluminum upper receivers.

92 By the way, my boss at NASA, who is a trusted friend from Judo and Aikido (he was listed by name in Gene Kranz's book Failure is not an Option as Gene's Judo training partner) was the person who was largely responsible for NASA never having a communication problem in manned space flight, personally confirmed that the Apollo 11 radio messages were coming from the moon. There is an S-band antenna on the roof of building 44 at JSC which has an optical aiming telescope that shows where the Antenna is aimed. He climbed up to the roof and used that optical scope to see where the antenna was aimed while receiving radio messages from the capsule, and it was aimed directly at the moon.

95 Musk has no interest in the Moon at all other than a funding source.

He just wants to use his hardware platform to get there and have NASA foot the bill for the development. This is how he operates.

There are cheaper and better ways of getting there than using a modified StarShip as the lander. Even if you want to colonize.

The Moon is dead and will never be used as an outpost unless NASA coughs up huge bucks and that just isn't going to happen.

Of course Musk has pretty much taken over manned aerospace in the US and we don't have an alternative other than going along with his agenda.

It's not that bad but you need to realize what he is doing for the lunar effort is just for the taxpayer bucks.

Took three calls to find an electrician to come out and he didn't make it on Friday. Saturday, I learned that my hot water heater is onthe same breaker the same breaker. No hot water.

My theory is that the house had a gas water heater when they put in the wiring for the heater. When they swapped out the gas for an electric water heater, they just wired in to the same breaker. The dryer was okay, until the water heater kicked in too. It's an old breaker box with just a few breakers and the whole thing may need to be redone. Plus it's on the outside of the house, as was the custom at the time.

I ordered a used ninja food processor and it arrived broke. Specifically a safety cut-off tab that wouldn't let the thing power up until engaged. I tried getting the broke part on ebay but all of them were broke too.

I then used some engineering skills (i.e. a rotory tool), gorilla super glue, a pin drill, some pins I fashioned from big paperclip wire and fixed both to be stronger and better than the original part. I was super stoked about that.

Used once since to quickly chop onions and peppers but I was mighty proud pressing the button and seeing it fire up.

I am disappoint. It is built well. It cleans up nice. As long as the item to be blended isn't too thick it blends well -- soups, for example. OK, there is no $37 trillion dollars in debt. Who exactly had $37 trillion lying around - not doing anything and was enough of a dumb ass to loan it to the U.S. Government? There is no power or combination of powers on the face of the Earth who could have done that. That $37 trillion is the sum total of the deficits run up by the Government budgets over the years. Deficits aren't debt, they cause inflation instead. That is why $1.40 worth of pre-1965 silver coins have ~ $49.00 worth of silver in them.

Did an A/V install for a Chinese bank and they bought everything from us except the Sharp flat screens. They bought Samsungs through Amazon, or some other outfit. They also argued the price of every component we did sell them, including the install services.

I went out to put everything together and found that the Samsung displays lacked the needed audio inputs for the video conferencing system. Told them they would need a conversion kit and the one I found online cost about $50. They insisted we supply it. Yeah, no.

Sales rep said they went with the Samsungs because they cost $6 less apiece than the Sharps. We sent another tech out with a smaller Sharp display just to show them how the original design was supposed to work. China is asshoe, but sometimes it's good to be the bigger asshoe..

It's a tool, a manipulated clearing house often fed too much personal information. Then it's presented as a finished, definitive authority and accepted as such by diminished fools too lazy to think for themselves.

I keep thinking back to the Star Trek episode "Conscience of the King". It left an impression on my teenage self.

"...the perfect symbol of our technical society. Mechanized, electronicized, and not very Human. You’ve done away with Humanity, the striving of man to achieve greatness through his own resources.”

Musk designed the motors?

If you doubt that he was deeply involved in the design process there is a video where he is explaining the evolution of the design and choices made in them. No con man manager could understand any of that. One of the questions he asks potential engineers is "What is your best technical achievement and how you did it?" The reason he asks that is a phony can't get very deep into that process before he runs into a brick wall of lack of knowledge.
