Why open source may not survive the rise of generative AI. (ZDNet)

Actually a real concern.

Open source depends on copyright. If you write something - software, here, but anything - it is your creating and you have the right to sell it, or to give it away, on terms you decide. Large open source projects need to get permission from all their contributors to include their code in their project.

Generative AI trashes all of that. The products of generative AI are not generally copyrightable, and they don't keep track of where things came from either. A piece of code from AI could be nominally original, or it could be adapted from an open source project, or it could be copied verbatim from a copyrighted source that the AI might not even have had legal access to (Anthropic had to pay out $1.5 billion over similar problems with its training data).

And you can't tell.

Aurora Innovation has sued the Department of Transportation for... Not changing the rules in its favour.
GM plans to drop Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support on new vehicles and replace them with, you guessed it, more AI slop. (The Verge)

Specifically based on Google Gemini, though I don't think the particular flavour of slop is of primary concern.
Why are network devices in 2025 still vulnerable to the kind of exploits we saw in 1995? (CSO Online)

Not the specific exploits, but buffer overruns, remote code execution, or simple authentication bypasses where the code never checks the password at all.

The answer? Because we're still dealing with code that was likely written in 1995:
"But when you're dealing with legacy code - we've actually seen some C++ applications where you have literally thousands of overflow issues and the original developers are long gone - it's very difficult to get a new developer to look at it, and they don't really want to touch the code. They get to a point where it's like: Well, prove to me it's exploitable, because this is a critical old piece of code that no one understands and it's dangerous to touch it."
The solution?

Throw AI at it, and when it breaks, fire people.

Good luck with that ... (and as an Independent Contractor Courier who drives 85,000 miles per year, Imma not gonna be comfortable potentially getting killed by driver-less big rigs -- given that I've had enough close with likely illegal-alien driven big rigs).

I went over the one-million mile mark some months ago, so: Time to retire ... like tears in rain.

Thanks for asking! No luck yet. Fixed a few already-identified vacuum issues and the fuel pressure regulator. I think it may need a fuel pump. Try the hardest thing last, right? Come to think of it, ignoramus that I am, I have not replaced the fuel filter yet.

Do that before you buy another fuel pump. Didn't you say you'd replaced the fuel pump like 10 years ago? It's a bitch, no doubt, and that filter IS likely clogged by now. Get 2, in fact. Old gas tanks can *crud-up* a lot.

Run a while, then cut-out, is typical symptom of plugged filter. Sorry I didn't think of it before! I'm out of practice, I guess...

Have bought only ONE new car (all others USED): was working for Ford Aerospace in '89; they had a program where you could go to a Ford Dealer as an employee and buy a new car; NO HAGGLING for 2% BELOW Dealer's Cost.

Humorously, I'd gotten a new job and was going to give notice; as soon as I bought an '89 Ford Escort and showed up at work: EVERYBODY said: "So what & where is your new job?" as that was the predictable pattern.

Anywho, loved that Ford Escort -- except for some reason, fuel filters frequently became clogged & had to be replaced (and fortunately I'd read the User's Manual as one time accidentally hit a curb and the car lost all power (and fuel); there was an automatic fuel-injection system safety cutoff in case of accidents or collisions.

It's life ended when a commercial truck ran into it while parked in a home driveway Circle (was out of town on business) -- but to the truck driver's credit, he left a note and assumed liability for having accidentally totaled it while attempting to maneuver in the tight street Circle.

Thanks, yeah I should have thought of it, too. I was a bit distracted - marrying-off a daughter, starting a new business area, and maintaining 6 other vehicles. A wee-bit distracted.

The article points out they are already being used in the Dallas-Houston route.

I suppose somebody is going to get killed before we reexamine whether this is a good idea or not. In the same way we are rethinking whether it was a good idea for some states to give CDLs to anybody with a foreign name.

There is something about generative AI that makes me mildly nauseous. The whole idea of training a system based on existing code and expecting that it will generate something as good or better eventually just doesn't seem right. I am watching a friend attempt to build a software package for a very specific business domain, and it keeps producing code that does not meet the requirements specified. I am going to look into the details soon, because while a very sharp person, he has no software development experience, and you kinda need some insight into how to test and maintain code in order to do this.

The whole idea of training a system based on existing code and expecting that it will generate something as good or better eventually just doesn't seem right. I am watching a friend attempt to build a software package for a very specific business domain, and it keeps producing code that does not meet the requirements specified. As much as I love and admire the great Randian Industrialist Elon Musk, I'm absolutely stunned that the spontaneous combustion of Teslas and other EVs hasn't destroyed the industry nor garnered much attention (outside of our beloved Buck Throckmorton and this Blog).

I mean, I know all new tools and technologies (like "AI") have upsides and downsides ... but WTAF?

I just assume that when an autonomous self-driving vehicle eventually kills a busload of children, it might cause a pause of and investigation into the technology and its risks. But now, I'm not so sure ... oh well, it is what it is.

The first thing I learned as a programmer in the late 70s was that Algorithms + Data Structures = Programming (a famous book authored by Niklaus Wirth (who IIRC created my favorite programming -- and a terrific teaching -- language: Pascal).

Anyway, I actually threw this at Grok recently -- and to its credit, it agreed that (at least for now) that is still all "AI" essentially is.

I'd have to put that to a spreadsheet for sure, but I have owned the Jeep discussed above since 2000. I read somewhere that the reason there were still very old vehicles being used as cabs is that the maintenance cost eventually levels-off. I was kind of annoyed at all of the "crush your vehicle for charity" thing that has been encouraged of late. Some old vehicles are junk all right, but many times you can get another 100,000 - 200,000 miles out of one with proper maintenance. Sorry, Salty...kinda went in a rant there. Again.

75 Here I is, awake (-ish), sipping my coffee. On TV is a new channel I did not know about, a broadcast channel called "Movies." The on-air guide doesn't show their schedule; I have to go to their site, moviestvnetwork dot com. They're like Turner Classic Movies without the commentary. With commercials, yes, but since they sometimes start the films at odd times -- 4:50, 11:05 -- I suspect they are showing the movies uncut, or mostly so.

Anywho, loved that Ford Escort -- except for some reason, fuel filters frequently became clogged & had to be replaced (and fortunately I'd read the User's Manual as one time accidentally hit a curb and the car lost all power (and fuel); there was an automatic fuel-injection system safety cutoff in case of accidents or collisions.

It's life ended when a commercial truck ran into it while parked in a home driveway Circle (was out of town on business) -- but to the truck driver's credit, he left a note and assumed liability for having accidentally totaled it while attempting to maneuver in the tight street Circle.

I'm not sure if I've ever picked up the channel, though.
Sometimes it's difficult to get a signal here, even for the major networks. Especially because I've got one of those flat, octagonal, wall-hanger, HD antennas.

Apparently Movies! is playing a Planet of the Apes marathon for most of the day.

I'll have to hook up the antenna to the sat-box again and see if it'll come up when I do a channel scan.

81 Yes; buy high-quality cars and run them for a number of years past the payoff date. Years ago I used to buy a used car, pay it off in the stated four years, then begin right away to look for a newer car to go back into debt for.

Later I realized what I was doing wrong. I kept the '86 Mercedes 420SEL (which was already 15 when I finally paid it off) for another three years, though that was partly because I loved driving it. I kept the '03 Park Avenue for four years past the payoff, the Buick Regal for two, and the current LaCrosse I paid off in '21. Each month I hung on to the money I would have spent on a car note and tucked it into savings.

The LaCrosse is in many ways the best of the bunch, and I have no plans to replace it any time soon.

It's not bad if you can find it.
Has commercials, and is kinda like Grit.

They just finished an episode of Lawman and now it's a western show from the late-80s named Guns of Paradise I've never seen before.

I'd thought to locate a recent Cadillac coupe (this was late '91). Couldn't, but the '89 silver-over-grey-cloth Olds Cutlass caught my eye. The dealer's idea of "service after the sale" was a bottle of touch-up paint, but the car was good and served me well, including a road trip to Carlsbad, NM, for four years. Working on a project of the most unbelievable tedium. Part of it involves taking 419 journal article titles, plugging them in one by one into Google Scholar, going to the publisher's page for the article, downloading the citation with abstract and putting it into EndNote so a spreadsheet can be generated.

The majority of the nurses were the cute 20 somethings that half-heartedly punched the target. Then it got to mom.

OK, I can tell you this as someone who has a black belt and studied LINE and MCMAP in the Marine Corps: When your opponent locks eyes with you and advances without fear, you are going to have an interesting time. She knocked him off the mat and he looked over and told the other nurses that this was what he was looking for.

Most states seem to have this problem. Get rid of Boulder and Denver, and Colorado improves dramatically. Austinites (who couldn't locate Amarillo on a map) are on-average waaay left of most of the state.
