The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

Ah...it's a trifecta of failure! Biden's magic touch at turning everything he does into a massive, jiggling pile of excrement, the government's fantastic, wide-ranging skill at being absolutely awful at everything it does, and the delightful frisson of DEI, which always injects additional failure points!

Frankly, I'm amazed that they only pissed away $42.5 billion!

Trump Administration Overhauls Biden's DEI Broadband Program that Connected Zero Households in 4 Years

The $42.5 billion federal program prioritized woke corporate mandates and handouts to the politically connected fiber and broadband lobby, while discriminating against far more efficient Low Earth Orbit (LEO) Satellite technology, such as SpaceX's Starlink. Four years after it passed, it proposed spending tens of thousands of dollars per household, but failed to connect a single American.

It's amazing that proven technology was carefully rejected because of its yucky connection to Elon Musk who, even back then was suspect because of his outlandish ideas that merit and skill should be the drivers of employment.

Just do the math, and Starlink is by far the most efficient answer to providing connectivity to rural America.

But...why the hell are we spending one dollar on connectivity for anyone? Maybe I missed it in the Constitution, but as far as I can tell, it isn't the core mission of the United States government to make sure that every American has access to high-speed internet porn and cat videos. Why not also spend $42.5 billion on high speed trains, so people can get to work, or subsidize their cellular service and equipment? Oh...wait...we are doing that already.

We piss away oceans of money on stuff the government has no business supporting, while simultaneously doing a horrifically inefficient job at it. Welfare? Airport security? Education? Infrastructure? They are all fantastically expensive boondoggles that no doubt pump lots of money into the coffers of friendly corporations and fellow-traveler nonprofits.

But internet might be the silliest of the bunch! It is a perfect application of market economics, and the cost should be borne by the users. Why should I have to pay for someone else's access to the internet, when I am already paying for my own? Is it a natural right to surf busty lesbian porn and buy paper napkins and lipstick from Amazon?

What this typical mess of a government program represents is the inexorable creep of what government should do. We have moved from the basics in 1791, to an incomprehensibly complex labyrinth of spending for results that never come. President Trump's rational attempt to rein in spending is a laudable beginning, but it must accelerate and expand for it to have any long-lasting effect on our budgetary woes, and our ridiculous drift away from the core function of government.

15 From the link:
While the Fiber and Cable lobby is still working with states still trying to work around the Trump administration’s priorities, Gigi Sohn has admitted defeat. In a recent LinkedIn Post, Sohn wrote that “BEAD isn’t going to do the job of closing the digital divide and we need community-based solutions to get it done.” Of course, to Sohn, “closing the digital divide” is a euphemism for the Biden administration’s crony and woke policies. She continued, “We still have a huge gap in connectivity and adoption, and will continue to do so even after the BEAD money is spent. And regardless of what policymakers are saying — the private sector won’t finish the job – if they wanted to/could, wouldn’t they have done so already? It’s up to state, county and local leaders to find other solutions.”

Who wants to tell her about Starlink?
This is a perfect encapsulation of the government's attitude towards anything non-government.

29 This right here is the difference between the Obama/Biden/Clinton and AOC wing of the Dems.

Obama/Biden/Clinton wing is all about graft. They cloak their graft in bullshit DEI initiatives. But it’s all fake and gay and just a way to steal tax dollars. It’s corruption but it’s “normal” corruption. They don’t want to rock the boat because their graft depends on the status quo.

The AOC wing on the other hand really believes in the DEI shit. They want to destroy everything.

Obama as bad as he was, at the end of the day was just a corrupt Democrat who got filthy rich along with his cronies while in office. President AOC will burn the country down.

Now, I *pay* for the internet access just like anyone else, but apparently there was some form of either state level/county level or federal level grant money involved in actually getting a company out here to run the fiber cables.
Once the *first* company ran the lines, a *2nd* better company came in and ran their own lines...but until that, the best we had was some pretty slow DSL or crappy satellite.

125 These kind of issues have been on my mind recently. Government bloat is real and it's spectacular. My rule of thumb is that at least 3/4 of public funds allocated to any of these "basic human rights" (as the left calls it) is wasted, i.e., ends up in the pockets of people who are abusing their power and influence.

This is why government-provided and -mandated health insurance costs at least four times as much as it should and only about a quarter of social safety net spending actually helps struggling people. Don't even get me started on how our SS paycheck deductions would have resulted in six times greater retirement benefits if privately and conservatively invested.

Since Jews are 1-2% if NY, Protestants are about 30%, and a bit over 12% are Catholic, after Mamdani wins, we can definitely...blame the Jews!

I have been told that the cost of access to the shared right-of-way has been structured such that it is unreasonably expensive for any but the largest companies to even attempt to use it. That especially includes someone who wants to get together with a bunch of their neighbors to share the cost of more expensive access. I don't know how to find out if it's actually true. I found the statutes to be pretty impenetrable.

181 From the last time they claimed a million man march ...

There, in the middle of this mall is the Washington Monument, 555 feet high. But if we put a 1 in front of that 555 feet, we get 1555, the year that our first fathers landed on the shores of Jamestown, Virginia as slaves. In the background is the Jefferson and Lincoln Memorial, each one of these monuments is 19 feet high.

Abraham Lincoln, the sixteenth president. Thomas Jefferson, the third president, and 16 and 3 make 19 again. What is so deep about this number 19? Why are we standing on the Capitol steps today? That number 19! When you have a nine, you have a womb that is pregnant. And when you have a one standing by the nine, it means that there’s something secret that has to be unfolded.

... 1555 ? I thought it was 1619

The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law was yet another giveaway to states, territories to 'develop plans & apply for grants,' w/Broadband Cos. & unions all in, too. (Emergency Responder services were to be included & given priority.)

Now that the administration is on their a**es, things are moving! "West Virginia is ready with final proposal for broadband expansion, but concerns over coverage remain," September 14, 2025

As of late 2024 and 2025, FirstNet has announced new sites and coverage enhancements in multiple Pennsylvania locations: Luzerne County: New sites were activated in Drums, Hazleton, and Larksville to improve coverage and capacity. Cambria County: Coverage was improved in the north end of Johnstown. Indiana County: A new site was activated in the Black Lick area, etc.

But did you know, eligible uses for BEAD funds included planning, deploying or upgrading infrastructure, installing internet in multi-unit residential buildings, and funding adoption and workforce programs?

Someone was saying they hope that New Yorkers don't vote for Mamdami even though Poly shows him winning, the reality turning out to be far from the hype. And it forces groups like Poly to have less influence. Who really knows, though!

I find it amusing that the media finally has to report the golden boy might just be Guilded gold and not solid gold. And it's the stupid auntie with the hijab story that's doing it.

Mamdami is trying to pedal back on that by making people questioning his lies out to be racist, show he's really the victim. Meanwhile some New Yorkers might be waking up to the idea that if you aren't a native New Yorker and you're making 9/11 about you, you might be an ahole. That maybe he doesn't get New York after all. I don't know your costs, so I.can't speak to that, but Star link is not Dish ( or Direct).
My Sat TV goes out in a really heavy snow or rainstorm, and if the dish gets coated in snow, even in a comparatively light storm, it goes out. Starlink, no.
It has to do with how it works. The Dish is aimed at one single point - a satellite 22,500 miles up. That signal can be blocked. Starlink satellites (the plural is important) are lower and run on frequencies that are not as susceptible to water absorbtion as Dish, and the system runs like a cell network, where your receiver grabs the strongest signal from all the satellites in view, and there are usually more than 3 at any one time. This means that when one sat is blocked, it can switch to one that isn't. Plus, the antenna isn't a dish which holds snow, it's a fairly steeply tilted flat surface and it's heated.
Short version - my Starlink has stayed up through periods where my Dish failed.
