81 He obviously inherited the family's artistic talent and maybe grandpa's sense of humor. The subtle blending of colors is effective as a background, making the figure stand out strongly. There is a realistic edge to the figure and an Impressionist feel to the rest. Interesting.

Looking at some of his other paintings, you can see Andrew's influence but it's not just a continuation. Jamie has his own viewpoint and imagination. I don't know if it's been done, but a comparison of the various Wyeth's art over the years would be interesting.

111 Amazon laid off 14k people. I’ve seen some of these “feel sorry for me I lost my job” posts on LinkedIn.

All DEI hires in nonsense jobs like marketing or social media out reach or what have you.

And today amazon CEO basically said the same thing. We let these people to for “cultural reasons” LOL. He didn’t say it was DEI hires of course but if you read between the lines you get it.

14k DEI dead wood making six figures. Eventually even the west companies lol at this and go wtf are we doing here? Look for all the other big tech companies to start this as well. This is another good sign that DEI, while not dead, is certainly less powerful than a year or two ago.

Gotta love online job forms.

At least they're better than they were the last time I went job searching. The extraction from resumes is much better now. Before, I'd submit the resume and then do the inputs into their forms manually. Now, I just need to review it to make sure that everything it fine.

And, so many people using WorkDay, it's almost second nature going through that by now.

Thanks.

Also, new video up. I put the link in the sidebar.

Please, everyone watch and subscribe and like and tell the world.

I like giving out candy. It's nice to see kids having fun and some of the costumes are really good. Last year, I had an extremely elaborate and well put-together Wednesday Addams who obviously put great creative labor into her costume. It was definitely not an off-the-shelf item and she had some real talent.

Superheroes fell out of fashion the past couple of years around these parts. Harry Potter had a resurgence, along with more classics like vampires. It's also fun to watch the trend.

It's a fun holiday. Enjoy it if that's what you're into!

Feast and famine.

When I was laid off, I spent six moths job hunting and applying, an average of 8 applications per week from damn-near entry level (I'm not) to aspirational stuff I was barely (or flat out wasn't) qualified for. Crickets across the board.

Then, inside of a single two-week period, I was slammed with interviews and three offers landed the same day. One was from a job board, one from a direct application, one from a network contact.

There was no rhyme or reason to any of it that I could see.

Wyeth's self-portrait Pumpkinhead — Self-Portrait (1972), depicting a figure in black standing in a field with a pumpkin over his head, is as self-effacing as his father's self-portrait Trodden Weed (1951), showing only Andrew's legs from the knees down. Jamie Wyeth submitted it to the National Academy of Design as a required response to his invitation to join, but it was rejected. He then submitted a half-length nude self-portrait against a dark background, securing his membership at the young age of 23.

Never read it and have seen a couple episodes of the show here and there. I have no dog in the fight, but I do see it.

And more than a decade late? Yeah, never gonna happen. Cornered himself, too many things he likes more, plain old disinterest, whatever. At this point, "George RR Martin is never gonna finish 'Winds of Winter'" is such a common joke that even I know it and while I follow pop culture to some degree, I'm not even in the club of people who care.

293 Same. I don't mind plinking boats in international waters, but direct hits inside a sovereign country requires more justification than wanting to interdict drug flow.
Posted by: Frasier Crane at October 31, 2025 10:38 AM (bNf8H)

For me, I’d say that justification would fall under violations of the Vienna Convention of 1961 (the embassy is not operational but its premises are still inviolate). Or something along those lines.

The isolationists and Code Pinkers might be surprised by my thinking. But while I firmly advocate Peace Through Strength, we should utilize DIME, and not rush to military ops as the first resort. This is one of those times. Let the Maduro regime be toppled by organic means. It will mean a great deal to Venezuela too.

The 2.8% Social Security cost-of-living adjustment for 2026 will push up the maximum full retirement benefit, as millions of monthly checks increase starting in January.

Additionally, workers who are under full retirement age and claim benefits face new limits for how much they can earn before their benefits are reduced.

354 In Ireland, the tradition of carving turnips for Halloween began as a way to ward off evil spirits during the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. These early turnip lanterns were the original Jack-o'-lanterns, a practice brought to America by Irish immigrants who switched to pumpkins because they were more abundant and easier to carve. The legend of Stingy Jack, an Irish folktale about a man cursed to wander the earth with a burning coal in a carved-out turnip, is the origin of the name "jack-o'-lantern."

I'm (obviously) not in a wealthy area, far from it. But still, there aren't any bad neighborhoods in the immediate vicinity.

373 George R.R. Martin strikes me as an author with an over-inflated sense of his own abilities as a writer.

Funny thing is, he's actually a pretty capable editor. But as a writer he's in bad need of someone to reign in his worse impulses. Pretty serious company in that regard.

375 343 That's actually a good point. He's mentioned wondering what the tax policy of Middle-Earth was like after Aragorn was crowned king (or something to that effect). GoT doesn't read like most epic fantasy--it's mostly about horrible people doing horrible things to each other with little regard for consequences.

385 Note that Martin both freely admits that he wrote himself into a corner and the delay is in part because he had no idea how to fix it for a long time and that Game of Thrones is essentially just reskinning the War of the Roses in a fantasy environment.

I don't expect to see the rest of the series in his lifetime, even if he HAS finished it for fear of the fallout.

I'm BLOODY ANNOYED at the fact that his failure here has actually genuinely hurt the entire genre, and it's much harder to get a fantasy epic published now because of him.

He deserves all the ribbing Larry Correia gave him on HIS multi-volume fantasy epic. ("Dedicated to George R.R. Martin. See, it's not THAT hard.")

additionally, while Claudia Sheinbaum is dumb as fuck, she is not having drugs sent north as a matter of policy because they can’t make money by other means. Hell, Mexico is getting bitchy about us wanting to stop the New World screwworm but don’t have much of a leg to stand on there.
