Bageris Garcia Lorca1.jpg

To Garcia Lorca
John Bageris

This is an excellent example of the conceit of the left, and their fixation on raising minor celebrities to impossible, hagiographic heights. Lorca was a modestly successful playwright, an author with a thin biography, and of course the obligatory homosexual.

What? Of course he was a communist! All the cool kids were. And a layabout, and a dilettante, and luckily for his legacy, the victim of a private feud, or the much more exciting KILLED BY FASCISTS!

At least the art is interesting, although a better title would have made it much more accessible.

If you want to write to me, you know my address:

The first dish that they serve to you is exploding hand grenades
The first dish that they serve to you is exploding hand grenades
The second, bullets, to awaken memories

112 BTW, if I may go OT for a moment, if you happen to have a Free Press subscription there is a celebration of American freedom published today by an Iranian woman who had to move here in order to live a free life. She gets it:

It’s ironic that a child who once chanted “death to America” has, as an adult, been given a second life in the same country she was taught to hate. When I say America means freedom, I don’t mean the freedom to pursue wealth or power. I mean the right to an ordinary life: the right to sit, to sing, to swim, to dance, to move, to exist without asking permission.

John Bageris

"He moved to Madrid and became involved with a vibrant artistic community, befriending figures like Salvador Dalí and Luis Buñuel." (AI) That's a strike.

"Artistic genius" in a sentence, description of this John Bageris seems way off. He went from one arty thing to another, perhaps with not a great deal of talent. (Maybe it mostly laid with flamenco dancing, idk.)

In as far as today art selection, it reminds me of the first season of True Detective which featured sinister stick figurines known as "devil's nests" or "bird traps." Ergo, I'd pass hanging "To Garcia Lorca.' The Whitney Museum of American Art should too.

189 To mildly object, Garcia Lorca was one of the lights of the Generation of 27 movement, a school of Spanish literature, arts and theater that was trying to come to terms with the aftermath of the collapse of the Spanish empire - and was preceded by the Generation of 98 which was the OG on the "now what for Spain".
(Note that Spain was doing this politically also, since the loss of the empire also lost the pretext that things could go on the same)
Spain had been fabulously wealthy and influential due to her colonies, and the arts reflected that golden age, but the success also had stunted art into reflections of that golden age as well.
Federico Garcia Lorca was experimenting with moving Spanish poetry from syllabic meter to the English foot prosody, and bring more European concepts to Spanish literature and theater.
That he was executed in the opening stages of the Spanish civil war may have had to do, as with Oscar Wilde's persecution, his objectionable politics, personality and having the wrong type of boyfriends.

There is a very deliberate campaign online, alt-media, any time you say something positive about Jews or Israel , they scream "You are getting paid", and that is intended to silence ordinary folk, and influencers, and commentators to prevent them from speaking up. 264 "Lorca was a modestly successful playwright, an author with a thin biography, and of course the obligatory homosexual."

With all due respect, this is not true. In his day, Lorca was considered to be the leading poet in Spain - a nation that takes poetry very seriously. His death was front page news throughout the nation, in both Republican and Nationalist papers. His fame was such that at the time of his death, the Nationalists falsely blamed the Republicans for killing him. The Falangist who murdered him, Ramon Ruiz Alonso, was kicked out of the Falange for what he did and became a non-person (though never prosecuted). As for a thin biography, when you're murdered at 38, your biography is going be a bit thin. As for Lorca's being an "obligatory homosexual", there was nothing obligatory about homosexuality in 1930s Spain! A recent historian, Ian Gibson, claims that Ruiz Alonso killed Lorca in a personal vendetta related to Lorca's homosexuality - basically, he "hated fags" - rather than for any political reason.
