So as your eyeballs get old and dry out it becomes difficult to focus on sights and targets. I, of course, am immune to this but I have heard it's a thing. Anyhoo, in order to be one of the cool kids, some time ago I began wearing my reading glasses when shooting handguns. My Ophthalmologist knows I am a shooter and gave me the correct magnification (around 1.5x) to focus at just beyond arm's length, or approximately where the front sight post will be. It worked! Sadly, I also found out I had not actually invented this, and lots of other shooters were doing the same thing. But is it the only way? Punkin' Carving With Hickok45 With .45ACP naturally. Fake 1911? This week's episode: Dead Patrolman The Bee Girl Do I really need to tell you to watch out for Bee Girls? ![]() ![]() As a simple hobbit, I am not skilled in the intricacies of cigar reviewing. However, I do appreciate a nice smoke and would like, if you don't mind, to share my impressions of the My Father - Flor de las Antillas. So grab a drink (I'm having Diet Dr. Pepper and Kraken, don't judge me!), and join me on the patio while I queue up a Bella Hardy playlist for a relaxing fall evening. Any self-respecting hobbit knows that a good meal starts with your eyes, a concept I would argue extends to cigar smoking. In that vein, I've been known to make cigar selections based on sticks that tickle my visual fancy, and the Flor de las Antillas sure meets the mark. It is truly just a beautiful cigar, from its rich brown wrapper, to the endearing crimson ribbon, and finally the ring, which is a legitimate work of art. This is such a nice-looking cigar that it is almost a shame to smoke it... almost. Tonight, I'm having this beauty in Toro since my local shop was out of Robusto. Hey, more to enjoy! And since summer is finally losing its grip on my area of the Shire, I don't mind lounging outdoors for an extended time. The best word I can use to describe the flavor of the Flor de las Antillas is smooth. From start to finish, it provides a pleasant smoking experience. It offers a nice steady transition from mild/medium at the beginning through medium/full-bodied at the end. Being a non-expert, I can't pick out particular flavors but get impressions like creamy with a bit of spice early on, spice intensifying over time, and gaining some hints of coffee toward the end. This cigar is never harsh, even on retrohales, making for a completely pleasing hour and a bit. Its satisfying production of smoke, firm ash, and pretty consistent burn line mean I can enjoy it without much fuss or effort, definite pluses at the end of a work day. Overall, I find the My Father - Flor de las Antillas to be a thoroughly enjoyable smoke. It could give Old Toby or Longbottom Leaf a run for their money, should the Southfarthing producers decide to branch out of pipes into cigars.Excellent, She Hobbit! Thank you! As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. Good evening party people, and the rest of you too...
Finally got home from TX on Wednesday, and am still catching up on being away for two weeks.... Have I been to the range: yes, after too long of an absence Did I practice fundamentals? yes, I did. Actually, I had to. Everything went very well, except for the few high middle shots = front sight iron. So, I look forward to viewing the video Weasel posted. All in all, a very satisfying outing, especially considering how long it's been. Think I'm finally building some muscle memory. Even move the target out with good results. Not great, but good. Good evening Horde. Thanks Weasel!
My outing at the pistol range in Texas was...challenged. Frustratingly, I shot poorly with my weapon. It had been a while since I'd been to the range, but geez. WBG let me borrow his gub and suddenly all my shots found their targets. Bang, bang, bang, bang, etc. Hmm... My fundamentals diagnosis was poor grip and trigger due to hands that were slimy with sweat and sunscreen. Went to the range near home and shot up the center of the target with less slimy hands. Moved the target out and was credible. Whew. Very much looking forward to watching the video in the content on shooting with reading glasses. I've done that which is great for seeing front sights but awful for seeing the actual target. Posted by: TRex - fundamental dino at October 26, 2025 07:17 PM (IQ6Gq) 45
The fake 1911 video should be a cautionary tale to anyone looking to purchase a vintage 1911 at gun shows, or any online forum. Learn about what you're wanting to buy BEFORE you start plunking down your hard earned $$. That fake might be a fair buy for $600 or $700, but it's certainly not that for $2k - $4k (current price for WWII era M1911A1s right now). Buy a decent reference source like Joe Poyer's book or Charles Clawson's references first. They'll save you hundreds, if not thousands, by helping you weed out the fakes like the one shown in the video. "Caveat Emptor" (Buyer beware) has always been the primary rule in the collectible firearms game. Don't let yourself get burned just because you took the word of the guy making the sales pitch to you to buy his stuff!

This raises the possibility that the Singer 1911 which I purchased last week from the trunk of a car, in a Wal-Mart parking lot at midnight, might perhaps not be authentic. Posted by: Idaho Spudboy at October 26, 2025 07:18 PM (RWp+V) 48

Today's range date postponed til next week. Some of us still recovering. Couple of after action comments on last week"s amazing 10th anniversary celebration. The new rules made for very smooth operation on the handgun range. Nice to see so many newbies learning the ropes. Like last year, not a lot of shooters so I got to shoot a few times and get some pointers from Geoff and even a reprimand from Weasel which reminded me to pay attention at all times. I had limited success Saturday on hte rifle range but really appreciated Blake's couching and next year I'll bring ammo. Posted by: sharon(willow's apprentice) at October 26, 2025 07:21 PM (t/2Uw) 55

New Glock 19 clone from TriStar.
I saw an announcement for a new 9mm pistol from TriStar, a Turkish firm better known for shotguns. Model name is APOC, MSRP is $359 but I got mine for $90 less than that (before tax, handling, transfer fee, etc.). Barrel is 4", capacity is 15+1. Note that TriStar website does not so much as whisper "Glock" in its listing, but it does say "Industry Standard Compatibility." Ha! When it arrived, it came in a cardboard box with 2 magazines and an unattached extended magazine well accessory. Sights are sturdy-looking, with green fiber optic dots in the rear and a red one in front. Sights are standard height, as the slide is not cut for an optic mount. Magazines are metal-lined, with a dozen witness holes in the back and no visible manufacturer markings. So far, it looks like pretty good value for the money. Hopefully, the rain will let up and I'll get to wring it out on the range soon. Posted by: Idaho Spudboy at October 26, 2025 07:32 PM (RWp+V) 73

Sometimes it is not enough to have a safety on your gun.
Sometimes you need a Super Safety. It is a form of forced reset trigger, and as of this date, is 100% legal. It is possible the one buy might buy one at a gun show and that it would be packaged in an unmarked plastic baggie. like less legal items. It is also possible that something packaged like that might not have the best quality control. You could install it correctly and it would fail to function as designed while dry firing. Grok is surprisingly helpful about things in the physical world. You could describe the behavior to Grok, and Grok would provide you with troubleshooting suggestions. Like where to Dremel it to make it work. Now interested in seeing how it goes with live fire. Posted by: blaster at October 26, 2025 07:37 PM (RoO7G) 80

Weasel, any thoughts about a class on collecting vintage firearms for next year's TX MoMe? Because a key part about learning about vintage firearms relies on hands-on experience, not just looking at Internet pictures or videos, having such a class might help someone not get burned by overpaying for something that's worth far less than what they paid for it. I could give a decent talk (with some hands-on examples) about US military 1911s or the Colt Python. Any interest from the horde about these topics?

I was still traveling during last week's gun thread and had a couple of comments about the MoMe ranges.
One is, I am truly sorry I did not return and pickup my brass at the rifle range. A downpour started while I was shooting and I left when it abated to dry my stuff with the intention of coming back but got distracted. When I went back later after the range was closed it was already done. Second is, thank you to whoever picked up my brass. There were probably at least 100 casings. I didn't want it but still should have To my credit though, I did help pickup brass at the pistol range. Thank you to everyone who worked at the ranges, and who shared their firearms, ammo, and expertise. Posted by: fd at October 26, 2025 07:52 PM (vFG9F) 93

Posted by: Idaho Spudboy at October 26, 2025 07:42 PM (RWp+V) Considering some of the prices I've seen on historic Colt 1911s, it's a LOT. Some new cars go for less than some of the prices I've seen for historic, high condition Colt 1911s. BTW, if you do pick up a surplus 1911 from CMP, you can use FOIA to get its post Vietnam (approximately) history (i.e. what unit it was assigned to, movements to/from depots for refurbishment, etc,). The Army made its property records electronic in about 1975 or so. Thus, you can trace your CMP 1911's location in time and place right up to the time CMP sold it to you. Posted by: Oddbob at October 26, 2025 08:03 PM (3nLb4) Oddbob, do you have any idea when your NM M1 was made/sold? If it was pre-1975, I'm afraid that the paperwork is long gone. You'll have to disassemble the rifle to look at the barrel markings (Springfield stamped the month/year of manufacture on its barrels for NM destined M1s) or other rifle components. For example, circa 1961, hooded rear sights were put on NM M1s. See "The M1 Garand Rifle," by Bruce N. Canfield, for additional specifics. This is a very detailed look at the history of the M1 Garand, and is still in print. It's a thick hardcover, and runs $95 on Amazon right now. Eyesight guy hits on one of my preaching points: point shooting. If you properly align your gun so it points where you do and refine that, it makes everything else easier. I think not enough people connect their ability to point (hint: what shape is your hand in when you point?) with aiming a gun.
I wouldn't want you to try and only point-shoot. But when you use your natural pointing ability with other aiming fundamentals, your fallback position when everything goes in the pot will be that much better. And he says it helps when the sights get blurry. Huh. Posted by: GWB at October 26, 2025 08:40 PM (6xADL) Posted by: JackStraw at October 26, 2025 08:42 PM (viF8m) 126

Posted by: Oddbob at October 26, 2025 08:03 PM (3nLb4) The Canfield book also points out that it was common for civilians to modify surplus M1s to National Match standards from the 1950s to the end of the 1970s. NRA publications routinely published articles during this time period about how to "tune" an M1 to NM standards. Consequently, it's very possible that your M1 could have had someone modify it to NM standards even though it never took part in any NM competitions. Oddbob, do you have any idea when your NM M1 was made/sold?
The barrel is dated 3-63. The serial number is not from the known range (5M-ish?) but from a Scott Duff article I read, near the end of production the DCM had exhausted all of the new receivers they had and were building type 2 NMs on whatever was available so any number theoretically could be legit. I haven't removed the receiver from the stock yet because I am reluctant to disturb the bedding unnecessarily. I will leave that to someone who knows what he's looking for. The gas cylinder has what might be a smeared, painted on version of the eagle and stars that you see on stock cartouches. Posted by: Oddbob at October 26, 2025 08:53 PM (3nLb4) 138

Oddbob, per the Canfield book, here are some characteristics of the 1963 NM M1s: - "F7791035" markings on barrels. This ID's NM barrels vs. standard barrels. - Rear sight base marked "NM/2A." - Operating rod marked "NM" on the handle. - "7790722-RA" drawing number marked on operating rod. Surplus NM parts were cheaply sold by DCM (now CMP) in the 1970s and 1980s, so the presence of NM parts in and of themselves, does not confirm that your M1 is a Springfield Armory manufactured NM rifle. Lots of folks out of power. Mine was out for a couple hours. All good. Warm and safe and happy. Heard you were going to get the worst of it up there. Comparatively mild here in the north of Sac area... Except the deluge of leaves! I can’t keep up. But the end is near. Stay warm and dry. Idaho Spudboy, I grew up in the south and I love okra. Posted by: four seasons Anyway, like I was sayin', okra is the fruit of the garden. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, sauté it. Dey's uh, okra-kabobs, okra creole, okra gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There's pineapple okra, lemon okra, coconut okra, pepper okra, okra soup, okra stew, okra salad, okra and potatoes, okra burger, okra sandwich. That—that's about it. - "F7791035" markings on barrels. This ID's NM barrels vs. standard barrels.
Marked SA 7791035 (no F) - Rear sight base marked "NM/2A." I don't see the base marked NM but the knob and aperture are marked and the windage reference lines on the heel are much closer together than on my other M1s. - Operating rod marked "NM" on the handle. Check. - "7790722-RA" drawing number marked on operating rod. Can't see a number without removing from the stock. Thanks for all the help. Posted by: Oddbob at October 26, 2025 09:30 PM (3nLb4) 170

Always enjoy the odd videos you bring us, Weasel.
I wonder how old is the pencil factory video. Seeing such manufacturing that requires so much human involvement always makes me think, not anymore. Not like anyone uses pencils anymore anyway. 😉 Basic conclusion from the Op Cue video: Stick your head between your legs and kiss your a$$ goodbye, as they say. Grew up aware of the potential devastation, and fully expecting the nukes to fly at any time. Funny how, even with the potential still high for total conflagration, most folks don't seem to be as aware of it nowadays. So husband is pissed at me because I questioned why we need to know whenever someone has a cold. He has bought into the texting so you know what everyone is doing. I don't need to know when people are taking a shit, have a cold, etc. Geez Louise, why do people need to be connected for everything? Posted by: four seasons at October 26, 2025 09:37 PM (3ek7K) 175
Oddbob, one more piece of information: After 1963, Rock Island Arsenal took over the NM rifle program. Canfield notes that until about 2010 or so, Rock Island provided a verification service authenticating whether certain serial numbered rifles had passed through the NM program. As of the original publication date of Canfield's book (2012) Rock Island Arsenal stopped providing this service. Theoretically, it would still be possible for you to physically go to Rock Island and research their records personally. However, I know most of us don't have the time to do this.

The reading glasses things works. 2 years ago when I brought some handguns to the mome it was 30-35 years since I shot them. Needless to say my eyes had changed in that time. I couldn't see the sights, blurry as all hell. Yeah, didn't think of that. I stuck on the readers, which were probably 2.5 that I use for extreme close up stuff, like seeing individual strands in stranded wire, or micro pitting in engine parts, etc, and poof, sights were great, but the target itself was totally blurry, because my long vision is fine. The end result was I was screwed, I couldn't hit much of anything. Recently I tried it with a 1.0 reading glass and it was perfect, sights were good, targets were good as long as they weren't way far away. I'm going red dot anyway since my normal vision is good from 1 foot away out to wherever. Red dots on everything, FTW.

Posted by: GWB at October 26, 2025 09:52 PM (47RGM) I still missed people. I made a hell of an effort to read the name tags, and yet some still slipped through the cracks. I'm reading about people who were there and I had no idea. I think I need to activate my plan like I said before the mome. I've posted here before about my jonesing for a sort-of-retro AR15. A mid length iron-sights beauty with CAR-15 collapsible stock, A2 fixed upper and A2 front sightpost, one just like the Rock River Arms LE1030 they sell to law enforcement only.
Well, it turns out they sell a complete mid length upper and a complete lower, and the lower has optional triggers so you can get the better two-stage one the LE model doesn't have. So you can in fact get a gun just like the LE1030 by buying unbundled. Posted by: M. Gaga at October 26, 2025 10:00 PM (zeLd4) 194

4-point buck (that is 4 per side out here in the West) that I've been watching, on and off all summer, was exhibiting patterns of carelessness and fearlessness. Early season he came out into the hay field at predicted time and location about 200 yards down the treeline where he traipsed a ways out into the open for his first nibble. He is now in the freezer.
I shot seated, off-hand, no brace, my bipod hanging uselessly in the air to keep the barrel above the tall grass. Fundamentals, as our gracious host Weasel endorses, and a scope zeroed out at 300 yards made it a point and click. Helps to have a good trigger on a good rifle and a good round. Self-loaded 140 grain, 50+ year-old, inherited Sierra Spitzers in 7mm. The box of 100 cost my Dad $4.65. My buddies each had a miss at similar yardages. Practice, people. Practice the fundamentals.
