Hobby Thread - October 25, 2025 [Roaming Rex]

20251019-20251016-IMG_20251016_143833017_HDR.jpg

Welcome hobbyists! Pull up a chair and sit a spell with the Horde in this little corner of the interweb. This is the mighty, mighty, mighty officially sanctioned Ace of Spades Hobby Thread. A spin of the Ace of Spades Wheel of Hobbies (TM) landed on travel themes.

Are you thinking "I don't even know what that means and I don't get around much these days but I'm eager to learn more. I can't wait to get into the content!" I knew it. Enjoy.

***

What are you hobbying?

As per usual Hobby Thread etiquette, keep this thread limited to hobbying. All (legal) hobbying is welcome. However, politics, current events and religious debates can live in threads elsewhere. Pants are optional. Puns are welcome and encouraged.

Play nice. Don't be a troll and do not feed the trolls.

***

Travel is fun, but some people organize travel around themes and make goals to visit all of the same type of destination.

Some people want to visit all the US National Parks or every US state.

Some people strive to visit every country/territory in the world or every continent.

Others want to see a game in every Major League Baseball stadium. (Wonder if they add the the trifecta of Cooperstown, Louisville Slugger factory, and the Field of Dreams?)

How about visiting 50 state capital cities and the capitol buildings?

All 13 operating Presidential libraries?

Seven wonders of the modern world?

We're not just looking for places you like to visit. We're looking for travelers that visit all of a certain type of destination where making it to all locations is a goal by itself.

What themes travel have you taken? What themed travel have you always wanted to do?

13 Things I Wish I Knew Before Trying to Visit All the National Parks

Over the last 11 years, I have explored 54 individual National Parks (some multiple times), and had a certain little global pandemic not happened I'd have been to all 63 National Parks. It's just a matter of time before I get all the parks. Here 13 Things I Wish I Knew Before Trying to Visit All the National Parks.

There are no rules for this adventure (other than the laws of the United States and the rules and regulations of the National Park Service). You get to define what a National Park visit is to you. Personally, I don't count it as a park visit unless I hike or kayak four miles (or do a major activity if the park doesn't have hiking). From the discussions, we have had in the National Park Obsessed Facebook group, some people are like me a good long hike counts. Others just want to stand the park but pretty much everyone agrees that if you want your visit to count, it counts.

If I had to guess, I suspect my total cost is in the range of $40,000 to $60,000. Which as I'm writing this, I'm thinking HOLY CRAP. Did I really spend that? When I break it down and consider there are 63 National Parks in 30 states and 2 territories. That's about $600 to $1,000 per park visit. That makes sense given I have been based in the Eastern US for most of my park adventures and either had to fly or drive 800 plus miles for the majority of park visits.

More at the link.

Anyone a member of the Travelers Century Club?

Membership in the Travelers' Century Club (TCC) is limited to those travelers who have visited one hundred or more territories of the world. It was first organized in Los Angeles in 1954 by a group of the world's most widely traveled people.

Travel milestones reflect the number of destinations you have visited based on the list of TCC Countries & Territories included in the checklist below. The status levels are:

Silver - 150 countries

Gold - 200 countries

Platinum - 250 countries

Diamond - 300 countries

The Travelers' Century Club list of countries and territories now stands at 330.

Want to visit all 30 Major League Baseball parks?

Logistics and timing is the big consideration. Grouping is key. If you're ambitious and have the time, get on the road and hit them all in one season. Most fans make it more of a gradual lifetime goal.

This website is a great trip planner to align schedules of multiple teams.

***

Visiting all US state capitals in 30 days is a little crazy.

But maybe a little less crazy than visiting all 54 Buc-ee's locations in two weeks.

***

Some Disney enthusiasts visit all twelve Disney parks around the world. Disney periodically sponsors luxury trips but you can do it yourself.

This blog post goes into extensive detail for a 21 day trip. Disney may not be everyone's thing, but the planning and execution is impressive.

7 Ah, this is a good one.

As of now, I have visited 36 of 50 state capitols. The remaining 14 are mostly in the Upper Midwest and New England.

And yes, I have AK and HI, and I bagged them early.

I have kicked around the idea of hitting all 254 TX county courthouses. That will be tougher. Much road time.

IIRC, 87 TX State parks. Of which I have visited nine.

Relatively few national parks. But my parks passport has a collection of stamps. More to follow...

11 Hobby time!

Nothing new for me, I'm afraid. During my trip to Indiana last month, I visited a store that on its website advertised itself as a cigar/pipe shop, with "the largest selection of pipe tobaccos in the tri-state area" (IN, KY, and IL, I presume). If that's the largest, I despair for pipe smokers in the area.

Mostly it was cigars on sale. The guy had some pipe tobaccos, true, but mostly the sweet-smelling aromatics that a lot of dedicated pipers don't care for. Their selection of pipes was minimal, with many of the "basket pipes" (inexpensive starter models) being bowls (!) without the stems that are needed for you to smoke them. And he wanted $7.00 for a packet of pipe cleaners -- something that can be had online for $2 and in shops near me for $2.50. I declined to buy anything and didn't go back.

I didn't price his pipe tobacco. I liked my hair non-white, thank you.

I'm terrible at giving people travel advice cause I tell them to go where I like. Santiago is a very nice city, the flight in when you are cruising next to the Andes is pretty spectacular. Get a left window seat. You can thank me later. But it's a city.

But I'm more of a country/water guy. Vina del Mar is like an LA with actual Spaniards and no low riders and as I said southern Chile is my favorite.

Christopher Columbus was a crackpot who had the idea that current mileage estimates to reach the Orient going west were way overstated. He was sure he could do it within the range of the tiny ships of the day.

He was completely and totally wrong, but lucky for him there were these continents called the Americas right in his path.

The rest is history, as the Hapsburg rulers of Spain made big bank on the hoard of silver and gold that subsequent explorers shipped back from the New World.

150 Willowed from last week -- During part of the shuttle program, NASA made a point of refueling at various airports on the way back to Florida. One day I happened to be home on the right day at the exact right time. I heard a really big noise in the sky. I ran outside to see what was going on. NASAwas landing the shuttle at Offutt AFB, and it was passing over my house at a low altitude. I stood on the porch gawping at it for several minutes.

152 i had the good fortune as a kid, to see 48 of the 50 states. Dad took us on several cross country road trips, about every 3 years. Always ended up in Chicago where we were all born. Started in SoCal.
southern route, northern route, and through the middle route. Was through most Canadian provinces too.
Epic. But i need to say that National Lampoon’s Vacation, was more of a documentary on our family, than a comedy…
lost the complete exhaust system in a shiity part of Florida, waited for a replacement water pump in Georgia for 3 days (at a seedy motel with running brown water) and when Dad was driving, there was a rigid schedule with no stops to see the largest ball of string or largest frying pan.
when mom drove 1 year, dad was staying home for an extra week to take a college exam, we got to stop everywhere we wanted. And buy fireworks too!
Always ended in Chicago. Dad consistently threw 2 or 3 cases of Coors in the trunk (couldn’t buy it East of the Mississippi back then… union controls) and broke it out when we arrived. Instant party with all of his childhood friends.
Last stop on the way home was always Vegas. Mom had to (and deserved to) play the nickel slots before getting home

157 I've mentioned wanting to try putting together a small fairy garden or some form of a terrarium. I started gathering the plants and materials recently. Succulents and a few tropical plants, all on the very small side. A container might just have one plant in it.

One aspect is choosing plants that can be propagated easily. There is something amazing about taking a leaf, or part of one, and getting a whole new plant. Start with a small plant for a few bucks and end up with a forest scene.

I also want to incorporate whittling into the mix but not sure how yet. Perhaps a mouse or rabbit 'hiding' under some foliage or a rustic cabin showing through the plants.

I have SS and BB certificates, but most of that stuff is well past my endurance. My map on an MC site I'm on (different nic) has 28 states and 2 provinces colored in, but that's just what I've been to on a bike. Altogether, I've visited every state + DC except Maine, RI and Delaware. No, I rode a plane to Hawaii - 4 islands - but AK was on the bike.
On our last outing, the wife and I hit a bunch of National Monuments in NM and CO, all of which centered around Chaco Culture, which some of the literature claimed was the earliest records of Man in the western hemispher, but I watched a utube video which showed an archelogical site in W Pa which claimed to move the date 4k years before Chaco.

Next year we'll fly to Iceland in hopes of catching the August 12, 2026 eclipse. We took on board people from McMurdo who held talks about what they did there etc. they loved coming onboard to see some new faces - and to eat steak and salads!

227 I was well on the way until the Astros and MLB told me to fuck off. Astrodome, the Juicebox, Busch Stadium (1985, my first - thanks Dad!), Stade Olympique, the SkyDome, Turner Field, Safeco Field, Coors Canaveral.

229 I have regrets didn't see more of England on my free trip for two years by the government. Did get to Scotland but only local East Anglia and London a few dozen times.

Skip, do it Go. Especially as an east coaster like myself, it's eye.opening. Don't forget Custer State Park while there. Fabulous.

231 I'm not a Red Sox fan. But if you've never been to Fenway Park on a warm summer afternoon it should be on your bucket list. Maybe twice.

That is what a baseball park is supposed to be.

I remember Weymouth for its cute little bridge and a lot of street buskers.

Wrigley twice (1st time, Cubs & Cards), Coors Field, Angels Stadium (not sure if it has another name?), Turner Field, Truist Park, and Fulton County Stadium. Best one? $5 seats at Fulton County, Tom Glavine pitching.

243 Baseball trivia. What's oldest baseball park in America?

JTB knows this one.

244 Hi back to all the friends saying hi! Like I told our son today: We went to Texas to spend a weekend with 90 of our best friends. lol.

Traveling is my main hobby, pastime, reason for living, you name it. That trip was amazing - the last post office on the mainland in Tierra Del Fuego - so cute. All the penguins! (Hi Duncanthrax). The sea was kind and allowed us to visit Falkland Islands - more penguins and super freaky deals with all the proper English and red phone boxes!

May be going to Nova Scotia again after the new year. No definite date yet and it's still up in the air. If I do go, I'll detour to your little state (assuming it's on my GPS.)

Yup. Cardines Field, built in 1908 if I recall my history. It was a nice part of my childhood.
